]]>Members may submit up to a maximum of THREE proposals drawn from the following categories:
A list of accepted proposals will be announced after the next Programming Committee review meeting (mid-March, 2026).
Please note that a proposal submission does not guarantee the work will be selected for performance.
Upon acceptance of a work, the member may be asked to take part in the publicity and production of the concert for which their piece has been selected.
Failure to undertake these responsibilities may result in a selected piece not being included on a program.
Members may submit up to three works for consideration. All submissions must be submitted using this form. PLEASE COMPLETE A SEPARATE FORM FOR EACH WORK SUBMITTED. After completing the form(s), please save the form with your last name followed by the ensemble submission number (1, 2, 3, or 4) as the title of the document – for example, Price1. Click here to download the submission form (DOCX).
The saved forms should then be sent as email attachments to William Price at pricewm@uab.edu.
The DEADLINE for submissions has been estended to March 15, 2026.

]]>During the 2025-2026 season, the Birmingham Art Music Alliance will
program a number of Bring-Your-Own and Do-It-Yourself pieces, either on
dedicated concerts or in tandem with other projects. BAMA will secure
venues and promote/produce/document concerts, but not provide
compensation for performers.
Submissions are not limited to but might include fixed media,
performances by the composer, performances funded or facilitated by the
composer, spontaneous compositions (solo or group), and performer member
proposals.
Current BAMA members may submit any number of qualifying works, listed
in order of preference. There are no restrictions regarding duration.
However, longer pieces may not be feasible, so consider including at
least one contingency proposal if your first choice is more than 12 minutes.

By July 1, 2025 for consideration throughout the season, or by December 1 for
consideration between January-September, email calls@artmusic.org with
the subject “BYO/DIY” and the following info (repeated in the same
message for multiple submissions):

]]>Newer and unperformed compositions will be given priority in programming. However, works presented on previous Bowles-Fouse concerts, by Duo Gastesi-Bezerra, or as part of the BAMA Piano Project will be considered.
Pianist Adam Bowles is a dedicated performer of new music who also remains an active and passionate interpreter of established solo piano, chamber music, and vocal repertoire from the twentieth century and earlier. Dr. Bowles frequently performs throughout the country with the Luna Nova ensemble, of which he is a founding member. He has given numerous performances on Birmingham Art Music Alliance concerts, and has also served as Treasurer and VP of Membership for the organization. He also serves as Music Director at Faith Lutheran Church in Clay, Alabama. Dr. Bowles holds degrees from Eastman School of Music (BM) and New England Conservatory (MM), and received his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.
Pianist Kathryn Fouse is Dean of the College of Visual and Performing Arts at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton, TX. In addition to her commitment to education, she continues to maintain an active performing career, sharing her passion for new music with audiences and actively seeking collaborative ventures with like-minded artists. In addition to her solo performances, she is in great demand as a professional accompanist, and has served as staff accompanist for many international competitions and festivals. Dr. Fouse holds degrees in Piano Performance from Baylor University (BM), Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville (MM) and the University of North Texas (DMA).

]]>If your preferred video recording is already in the BAMA archive, indicate the concert, date, YouTube link, or other info to help us locate it. Otherwise, you may upload to your own repository and send a link — or request access to BAMA’s Google Drive for direct transfer. If you have no such video, consider making one. Composer performances are acceptable, as are creative video works (not still images or scrolling scores) synchronized with recorded audio or electronic music.
There is presently no budget to cover expenses for new recordings. However, if you have no other option but possess a work for a solo instrument (cello, clarinet, piano, etc.), please indicate so in case there is funding later.
In order to participate, you agree to record a short interview (questions and details forthcoming) that will be edited as an introduction for your piece.

]]>Trombonist Jacob Elkin has offered to present a concert featuring BAMA member composers in February of 2025. He is particularly interested in electronics, improvisation, and microtonality but will consider all submissions. Works for solo tenor or bass trombone (acoustic or electronic) are more likely to have repeat performances. Collaborative improvisations and pieces to be performed with local musicians are possible, provided the composer manages rehearsals and covers additional performer fees.

If the work to be submitted is complete, attach the score in PDF format. Otherwise, include a proposal with a brief description of the composition/collaboration. A due date for proposed compositions will be announced later.

]]>2024 will mark the 10th anniversary of the Birmingham New Music Festival, with events planned during the second and third week of May. Current members of the Birmingham Art Music Alliance are invited to send separate submissions for any of the following three categories. Take note of different requirements and deadlines for each.
BYO:
Submit works for any instrumentation and be responsible for securing performers and organizing rehearsals. This option can also include performances by the composer, works with electronics, improvisation, and/or presentation of music by living non-local composers. Compensation per member for performances in the BYO category is limited to $440 (up to four performers). Works for larger ensembles are feasible if the submitter will compensate additional performers.
By January 10, 2024, email calls@artmusic.org with the subject “BNMF2024 BYO” and the following info:
* composer, working title, duration, instrumentation and/or number of performers, technical requirements, and optional recording.
List up to 3 submissions, ordered by preference, in the body of the same email message.
The BAMA Players/Stravinsky Septet:
This program, including up to six BAMA works, will close with a performance of Igor Stravinsky’s Septet for clarinet, bassoon, horn, piano, violin, viola, and cello — which reflects the change in his music from neoclassical to serial. Current members are invited to submit compositions of 6 minutes or less that are somehow influenced by the Septet, for any combination of instruments from the septet.

Scores and parts are due by April 20, 2024.
Solo Cello Works:

Who: Iron Giant (Sam Herman, Brett Huffman, Seth Noble, and Justin Wallace)
What: A concert series of scalable compositions to be performed in several different community spaces in Birmingham — such as parks, galleries, and libraries. Scores should be adaptable to completely different settings and instrumentation. Iron Giant primarily function as a quartet but may expand the ensemble for some programs. Some approaches to composition include:
Examples of compositions follow. Most of the links are performances with a score displayed. There are multiple performances of many of these works on YouTube.
Iron Giant are willing to present a workshop and/or participate in a Zoom call for informal Q&A. They will be available for composers to contact as questions arise.
Before November 1, notify calls@artmusic.org if planning to compose for this project. Please also indicate if you would like to participate in a workshop or call with Iron Giant, both, or neither.
