My Journey as an Occupational Therapist: Passion, Purpose & Assistive Technology

I’ve been working as an Occupational Therapist for nearly seven years, and for over five of those years I’ve had the privilege of working within the NDIS space. Throughout my journey, one thing has remained constant — my passion for Assistive Technology (AT). I am always fascinated by how a thoughtfully prescribed piece of equipment can transform someone’s life, enhance their independence, and open doors to participation they may not have thought possible.

What I love most about working with people with physical impairments is the collaboration between observation, lived experience, and clinical reasoning. Clients often describe what they’re experiencing, and through careful assessment and observation, I’m able to identify elements that might not be immediately obvious, opportunities where the right equipment could make a real difference.

Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to prescribe an array of assistive equipment, including:

  • Electric lift chairs
  • Electric beds
  • Pressure-relieving mattresses
  • Customised shower commodes
  • Customised manual wheelchairs
  • Customised power wheelchairs
  • Ceiling and floor hoists

Every prescription is informed not only by clinical frameworks learned at university, but also by a deep understanding of how AT supports clients to:

  • Increase independence
  • Reduce pain and discomfort
  • Improve posture and function
  • Access their community more easily
  • Enhance overall quality of life

One of the most memorable pieces of equipment I’ve prescribed was a highly customised wheelchair designed to fit into the back of a standard car.

My client previously had two options:

  • A power wheelchair that required travel by maxi taxi
  • An off-the-shelf manual wheelchair that she often didn’t have the energy to self-propel

Neither option truly supported her independence.

The customised wheelchair I prescribed could be disassembled and transported in a regular vehicle, and most importantly, it offered flexible function:

  • It could be configured as a manual chair when she had the energy to self-propel
  • It could be set up as a power wheelchair with a joystick for longer distances or when she was fatigued

Because it was smaller and less bulky than a traditional power wheelchair, she found it more comfortable and easier to use in the community. Even better — she could switch between modes independently, without needing support workers to assist her.

Despite my experience and enthusiasm for AT, I know there is still so much I don’t yet know in this ever-evolving space. I feel very fortunate that my work supports me to continue learning — attending professional development courses, workshops, and training about new technologies and solutions. These opportunities not only expand my own knowledge but also allow me to share insights with my colleagues, helping us all provide better, more informed support.

This kind of ongoing growth, combined with the ability to apply theory to practice and tailor solutions that genuinely support a person’s goals, that’s the heart of meaningful assistive technology and why I love what I do! 😊

Behavioural Activation: Supporting Motivation and Confidence Through Doing

November 4, 2026

Written by our OT, Jack

A large part of my work involves supporting clients who are capable, but feel stuck. Many of the people I work with—particularly individuals with psychosocial impairment under the NDIS—experience low motivation, reduced confidence, or strong avoidance of everyday tasks. Importantly, this is often not due to a lack of ability, but due to past negative experiences where tasks felt overwhelming, unsupported, or resulted in failure.

Over time, these experiences can lead to beliefs such as “I can’t do this”, “I’m going to get it wrong”, or “There’s no point trying”. As a result, clients may avoid activities altogether, rely heavily on others, or withdraw from situations that are important for their independence and wellbeing.

One of the main approaches I use in these situations is Behavioural Activation.

Behavioural Activation is a therapeutic approach that focuses on improving motivation, mood, and confidence by gradually increasing engagement in meaningful activities. In simple terms, the idea is that we don’t wait to feel motivated before acting—we act first, and motivation follows. When people avoid activities, their world often becomes smaller, reinforcing low mood, anxiety, and negative self-beliefs. Behavioural Activation works by gently reversing this cycle through supported action.

From a science perspective (in simple terms), Behavioural Activation is based on the idea that our behaviour directly influences how we feel and think. When someone engages in activities and experiences success, enjoyment, or even a neutral outcome, the brain begins to form new associations. These experiences provide positive reinforcement, reduce avoidance, and gradually challenge unhelpful beliefs about ability and failure.

I find Behavioural Activation works best for clients who are cognitively capable but behaviourally withdrawn. This includes clients experiencing anxiety, depression, and low motivation related to their impairment—often shaped by limited supports or negative past experiences—as well as individuals who struggle with task initiation, confidence, and executive functioning. These clients often have the underlying skills, but lack belief in themselves due to repeated negative experiences.

In my practice, I regularly use Behavioural Activation with clients who avoid tasks such as using public transport, attending appointments, managing routines, or engaging socially. Many report past situations where they felt rushed, misunderstood, or unsupported, which has led them to believe they are “not good” at these tasks. As a result, they avoid them altogether or rely heavily on others.

Rather than pushing clients to “just try harder”, I apply Behavioural Activation principles by:

  • breaking tasks into small, manageable steps
  • starting with low-pressure activities
  • gradually increasing challenge and independence
  • providing the right level of support and scaffolding
  • reflecting on successes and learning from experiences

Over time, clients begin to experience success in situations that previously felt impossible. This helps shift their belief from “I can’t do this” to “I can try this with support”, and eventually to “I can do this on my own”. This process builds confidence through real-life experiences rather than relying on reassurance alone.

At its core, occupational therapy is about supporting participation in everyday activities that are meaningful to the individual. Regardless of a person’s impairment, if they struggle with the motivation or confidence to engage, this can become a significant barrier to personal growth, independence, and skill development. Behavioural Activation is one way we can address this barrier by supporting clients to re-engage in meaningful activities in a structured and achievable way.

I find Behavioural Activation particularly effective because it is practical, empowering, and grounded in everyday life. It allows clients to rebuild motivation and confidence through doing, not just talking. This approach can be applied across a wide range of impairments, as many individuals experience reduced confidence, anxiety, and withdrawal from activities they need or want to engage in. By supporting gradual re-engagement, Behavioural Activation helps individuals rebuild participation, independence, and belief in their own abilities.

Top 5 Reasons to See a Physiotherapist Even if You’re Not in Pain

September 10, 2026

Physiotherapy isn’t just for recovering from injuries or easing pain. It plays an essential role in prevention, performance optimisation, and healthy ageing.

Top 5 Benefits of Preventative Physiotherapy

  1. Injury Prevention:
Physios can spot poor movement patterns, muscle imbalances, or biomechanical faults early, helping you prevent injuries before they happen.

  2. Posture Correction:
Modern life is hard on posture (think laptops and smartphones!). Good posture is key to preventing neck, back, and shoulder pain.

  3. Performance Optimisation:
Whether you’re an athlete or a weekend warrior, physios can enhance strength, flexibility, and biomechanics to boost performance.

  4. Healthy Ageing:
Staying mobile and strong helps you maintain independence as you age, reducing the risk of falls and joint degeneration.

  5. Rehabilitation of Old Injuries:
Old injuries can create long-term movement issues if not properly rehabbed. Physiotherapy can address these to restore optimal function.

Why Early Intervention Matters

A study by Emery et al. (2015) found that injury prevention programs focusing on neuromuscular control reduced injuries by over 40% in youth sport. Adults, too, can benefit from similar preventative care.

Final Thoughts

You don’t have to wait for something to go wrong. Regular physiotherapy assessments can help you move better, perform better, and live better — for life.

Reference: Emery CA, et al. (2015). Clin J Sport Med.

  • Improved blood glucose control (for diabetes)
  • Reduced blood pressure and cholesterol (for heart disease)
  • Better joint mobility and pain relief (for arthritis)
  • Enhanced mental health (lower rates of anxiety and depression)

The Australian Chronic Disease Prevention Alliance and Diabetes Australia both advocate exercise as a critical part of disease management.

The Science Behind Exercise Therapy

Clinical research shows:

  • Structured exercise reduces HbA1c (blood glucose) by 0.7% in people with Type 2 diabetes (Colberg et al., 2016).
  • Cardiac rehabilitation exercise programs lower mortality rates after heart attacks.
  • Regular exercise improves lung function in COPD patients.

An EP considers your medical history, medications, and functional capacity when creating your exercise plan. Examples of Exercise Programs

  • Supervised walking or resistance programs for heart patients
  • Strength training for diabetes or osteoporosis management
  • Balance training for falls prevention in older adults

Final Thoughts

Living with a chronic condition can feel overwhelming — but movement is one of the most powerful tools you have. An exercise physiologist can help you take control of your health with a program that’s safe, evidence-based, and tailored to your needs.

Exercise Physiology vs Personal Training: What's the Difference and Why It Matters

September 10, 2026

If you’re recovering from an injury, managing a chronic illness, or simply aiming to improve your health safely, you may need more than a personal trainer. Exercise physiologists (EPs) are trained in clinical exercise therapy tailored to medical conditions and injury recovery.

What is an Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP)?

An AEP is a university-trained allied health professional who uses exercise as medicine to help people recover from injuries, manage chronic conditions, and improve overall health. They work with people of all ages and abilities, from post-surgical patients to individuals with diabetes, arthritis, heart disease, and more.

Key Differences Between an Exercise Physiologist and a Personal Trainer

Exercise Physiologist

Personal Trainer

Education

4-5 year university degree

Short vocational course

Focus

Clinical populations, rehabilitation

General fitness and strength goals

Settings

Clinics, hospitals, community

Gyms, fitness centres

Health knowledge

Extensive understanding of pathology and rehabilitation

Basic knowledge of fitness principles

Why It Matters for Your Health

Exercise physiologists prescribe exercise safely for conditions where standard exercise might be risky. Their programs are designed around:

  • Medical history and medications
  • Biomechanics and movement assessments
  • Risk factors (e.g., cardiovascular or diabetic complications)

Studies show clinical exercise interventions delivered by EPs significantly improve outcomes in people with chronic disease (Pedersen & Saltin, 2015).

When to See an Exercise Physiologist

  • Recovering from injury or surgery
  • Living with a chronic disease
  • Managing weight alongside other health conditions
  • Improving heart or lung health

Final Thoughts

If you have a medical condition, injury, or complex health needs, an Accredited Exercise Physiologist will design an evidence-based program that’s safe, tailored, and proven to improve outcomes — far beyond what a generic fitness program can offer.

How Occupational Therapy Can Help You Regain Independence

September 10, 2026

When disability/ impairment disrupts daily life and capacity, occupational therapy (OT) can be the key to regaining independence. Whether it’s getting dressed, cooking, getting around in the community and moving safely around within your home, occupational therapists focus on empowering people to live as independently as possible.

What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational therapy supports people to engage in the activities (“occupations”) that are meaningful and necessary for daily living. This could include self-care tasks, mobility, work, study, or leisure. OT is holistic – considering not just physical health, but also cognitive and emotional wellbeing.

How Occupational Therapy Helps

  • Home modifications: Installation of rails, ramps, bathroom modifications, and layout changes to enhance safety.

  • Assistive technology: Equipment like shower chairs, mobility aids, and adaptive utensils.

  • Rehabilitation programs: Strengthening, cognitive retraining, and improving coordination.

  • Pain and fatigue management: Helping people conserve energy and reduce strain during daily activities.

  • Psychosocial Occupational therapy designed to support the individual to build self-esteem and confidence.

  • Training of supports to provide the best model of care for you as an individual to meet your goals.

  • Working with other allied health professionals collaboratively to support you to meet your goals.

In post-stroke rehabilitation, for example, OT has been shown to significantly improve a person’s ability to perform activities of daily living (ADLs) and reduce dependency (Legg et al., 2007).

Common Conditions That Benefit from OT

  • Stroke recovery

  • Brain injuries

  • Post-surgical rehabilitation (e.g., hip or knee replacement)

  • Neurological conditions (e.g., Parkinson’s, MS)

  • Chronic illnesses (e.g., arthritis, heart disease)

When to Consider Seeing an Occupational Therapist

  • Struggling with personal care tasks (dressing, showering, toileting)

  • Difficulty returning to work or study

  • Reduced mobility or fear of falls

  • Needing assistive devices to perform daily tasks

Final Thoughts

Occupational therapists work alongside you to rebuild confidence, restore skills, and adapt your environment so you can live life on your terms again. With expert help, many people achieve much more than they thought possible.

Physiotherapy for Long-Term Pain Relief: Why Early Treatment Matters

September 9, 2026

Pain is a universal human experience. Whether it’s a sore back, an aching knee, or a stiff neck, most people will experience musculoskeletal pain at some point. Unfortunately, many people delay seeking professional help, assuming the pain will “work itself out” over time. However, evidence suggests that early intervention through physiotherapy can significantly improve outcomes, reduce the risk of chronic pain, and help you return to full function faster.

In this blog, we’ll explore why early physiotherapy matters — and why waiting can make recovery harder.

Why You Shouldn’t Ignore Pain

Pain is your body’s way of signalling that something isn’t quite right. While some aches and pains are normal after exercise or a long day, persistent pain — lasting more than a few days — could indicate an underlying issue like a strain, sprain, poor posture, or nerve irritation.

Left untreated, acute pain can transition into chronic pain — a complex condition where the nervous system becomes hypersensitive. According to the International Association for the Study of Pain, chronic pain affects approximately 20% of adults globally, limiting daily activities and mental wellbeing.

The Benefits of Early Physiotherapy

Research supports the benefits of early intervention. A 2018 review published in The Lancet (Foster et al., 2018) highlighted that early physiotherapy for lower back pain leads to better outcomes, including:

  • Reduced pain intensity
  • Faster return to work or normal activities
  • Lower overall healthcare costs
  • Reduced likelihood of chronic pain development

Key ways physiotherapy helps early on:

  • Accurate diagnosis: Physiotherapists identify the true cause of pain, not just treat symptoms.
  • Targeted treatment: Hands-on therapy, exercise programs, and education address the root issue.
  • Prevent compensations: When in pain, people often change how they move, leading to secondary problems elsewhere in the body.

Risks of Delaying Treatment

Ignoring pain or relying solely on painkillers often leads to bigger problems down the line. Risks of delaying physiotherapy include:

  • Chronic stiffness and muscle weakness
  • Poor joint mobility or flexibility
  • Postural changes leading to further injury
  • Psychological impacts such as fear-avoidance behaviour (where people avoid activity altogether)

The longer pain persists, the more complex and difficult it becomes to treat.

When to See a Physiotherapist

You don’t need to wait until you’re in agony to seek help.
Book an assessment if you experience:

  • Pain lasting longer than 7–10 days
  • Pain that worsens with activity or movement
  • Swelling, bruising, or visible deformity
  • Numbness, tingling, or weakness
  • Pain that interrupts sleep or daily tasks

A physiotherapist can work with you to develop an individualised plan that gets you back to your best.

Final Thoughts

Early physiotherapy is not just about “getting a massage” – it’s about addressing the underlying causes of pain, restoring function, and preventing long-term problems. If you’ve been putting off an ache, injury, or niggle, now’s the time to act. Your future self will thank you!

Understanding Functional Capacity Assessments: Why They Matter and How They Benefit You

Last updated: October 29, 2024

Functional Capacity Assessments (FCAs) play a crucial role in the field of Occupational Therapy. These comprehensive assessments evaluate an individual’s capacity to do activities of daily living at home and in the community and  establish what type of NDIS support and/or therapy they may need to enable them to reach their maximum potential and achieve their goals towards greater independence.

Activities of daily living may include making breakfast, looking after the house or getting out for shopping or using public transport.

NDIS support may include devising a therapy plan, finding suitable equipment to enable you to complete activities at home or may alo changes to the house to enable people to be more independent with their activities of daily living. It can also include assessing how much support from others is required and what type of housing model a client may require to allow them to live their best life.

In this blog post, we’ll break down what FCAs are, why they are important, and how they benefit clients in Australia.

What is a Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA)?

An FCA is a thorough evaluation of a person’s functional abilities. The aim is to assess their physical, cognitive, and psychosocial capacity to complete specific activities.

FCAs typically focus on:

  • Physical capacity: functional physical ability when moving around home or in the community and in relation to tasks.
  • Cognitive capacity: Assessing memory, attention, decision-making, and problem-solving skills when undertaking activities of daily living.
  • Psychosocial capacity: understanding the individual’s emotional regulation, interpersonal skills, and  level of social participation.

Why Are Functional Capacity Assessments Important?

FCAs are integral to creating tailored support plans for clients and providing evidence-based recommendations. An FCA offers a comprehensive view of the client’s strengths and how to maximise their capacity and work towards the individual’s goals. This enables OTs to develop therapy plans or to work through solutions around equipment

How Do FCAs Benefit Clients?

The ultimate goal of an FCA is to enhance the client’s quality of life by providing them with the tools and support they need. Here are some of the ways clients can benefit:

  1. Increased Independence
By identifying areas where the client may need assistance or adaptive equipment, FCAs help improve a client’s ability to carry out daily activities independently. Enhanced Well-being
With a clear understanding of a person’s functional abilities, an occupational therapist can design a support plan that aligns with the client’s physical and emotional well-being. This not only helps in addressing immediate concerns but also fosters long-term health and happiness.
  2. Better Support for Family and Caregivers
FCAs not only help the client but also provide valuable insights for family members and caregivers. Understanding the level of support needed can prevent caregiver burnout and ensure that the client’s support network is equipped to meet their needs effectively.
  3. Tailored Therapeutic Goals
Every client has unique challenges and aspirations. An FCA allows occupational therapists to create tailored therapeutic goals that are both realistic and meaningful. This personalized approach ensures the client stays motivated and sees measurable improvements in their functional capacity.

Functional Capacity Assessments are a vital part of occupational therapy practice, offering clients a path to greater independence, safety, and well-being. By thoroughly evaluating an individual’s functional abilities, FCAs empower clients to live fuller, healthier lives while ensuring that they have the resources and support they need.

Let Yourself Be Heard: Speech Therapy Interventions for Autism

Speech Therapy can play a vital role in enhancing the quality of an Autistic individuals’ communication skills, social skills, and quality of life. Here’s a closer look at how Speech Therapy can be a game-changer for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Why Speech Therapy and Autism?

A key trait of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a set of challenges associated with communication. Often when Autistic individuals are unable to be heard and understood, they are left with reduced choice, independence and overall quality of life. Autistic individuals who work with Speech Pathologists are able to get tailored interventions that improve their expressive language, receptive language, social skills, and much more.

Common Interventions for Speech Therapy and Autism:

  1. Communication Skills Practice

Speech Pathologists may use real world experiences in the community, role-playing, social stories, worksheets, and practical cues to help individuals with ASD understand social situations. Practical situations such as turn-taking in conversation, recognising body language, repairing communication breakdowns, and reciprocal communication may be covered.

  2. Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)

Speech Pathologists may introduce equipment such as partner assisted communication, communication boards, picture exchange communication systems (PECS), or speech generating devices to aid or improve an autistic person’s communication. This equipment is customised towards each individual’s functioning depending on their level of understanding and ability.

  3. Expressive Language and Understanding Feelings

Speech Pathologists may help Autistic individuals with articulating their thoughts and feelings clearly. Often, interventions may use techniques suited to neuro-divergent individuals such as visual aids, structured language activities, or collaboration and training with key family members or carers.

Speech Therapy Changes Lives

Everyday, our Speech Pathologists are in-clinic and on the road helping individuals with ASD make remarkable improvements in their everyday lives. Communication is the key to unlocking a life full of meaningful relationships and experiences, and also helps to reduce frustration from being misunderstood.

Introducing: Speech Therapy

Last updated: August 14, 2024

Exciting things are happening at a2z Health Group these past few weeks. We are proud to announce that we will be introducing Speech Therapy across our services.

If you’ve ever wanted to know about what Speech Therapy is and what it can offer, keep reading to find out more!

What is Speech Therapy?

Speech Therapy helps individuals enhance their ability to communicate effectively and confidently. Trained Speech Therapists work with individuals across the entire span of age & ability, to address barriers towards speech production, language, and cognition. Their interventions may involve: targeting better articulation, overcoming language disorders, improving problems with voice volume or pitch, introducing methods of communication other than speaking such as eye-gaze technology or Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), working on social skills, teaching safe swallow techniques and strategies, making recommendations for safe food and liquid intake, and more.

Who is Speech Therapy for?

Here are some common examples of diagnoses seen by Speech Therapists:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • Global Developmental Delay
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Traumatic Brain Injury
  • Stroke
  • Language Disorder
  • Intellectual Disorder

Benefits of Speech Therapy:

Here are just some of the main areas of focus for our trained Speech Therapists:

  1. Articulation and Pronunciation: Speech therapy helps individuals improve their ability to produce clear and accurate speech sounds, leading to intelligibility.
  2. Language Skills: Speech Therapy helps to improve both listening skills (receptive communication) and speaking skills (expressing communication)
  3. Cognitive-Communication Skills: Speech therapy can improve cognitive-communication skills such as memory, attention, problem-solving, and organisational abilities, which are crucial for effective communication and daily functioning.
  4. Improved Swallow Function: Speech Therapists are also able to assist with swallowing difficulties commonly found in individuals with neurological differences such as Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease, and Cerebral Palsy.

The Transformative Power of Occupational Therapy for Autistic People

Last updated: May 7, 2024

Welcome to the world of occupational therapy (OT), a realm where possibilities unfold and potential is maximised, especially for autistic people. At a2z Health Group, we’re committed to unveiling the myriad benefits of occupational therapy for autistic people and in doing so, illuminating the path to enhanced well-being and independence.

What is OT for Autism?

Occupational therapy for autistic people is more than just a series of interventions; it’s a journey towards empowerment and self-discovery. Autism, a spectrum disorder, presents unique challenges in daily living, social interaction, and sensory processing. Occupational therapy steps in to address these challenges, tailoring strategies that resonate with each individual’s unique needs.

Embracing Diversity in Intervention

Occupational therapy intervention for autistic people is diverse, focusing on enhancing life skills, promoting independence, and supporting sensory and emotional regulation. At a2z Health Group, our occupational therapists are not just professionals; we are compassionate guides who understand the nuances of autism. Our team employs a range of techniques and activities, tailored to align with each person’s strengths and areas of need.

Benefits of Occupational Therapy for autistic people

  1. Enhanced Daily Living Skills: From personal care to time management, OT helps individuals increase independence in daily activities.
  2. Improved Social Interaction: By developing communication and social skills, OT can pave the way for meaningful social engagement.
  3. Sensory Integration: Our therapists are adept at designing activities that help manage sensory sensitivities, leading to a more comfortable and engaged experience of the world.
  4. Emotional Regulation: Through OT, individuals learn strategies to cope with emotions, reducing anxiety and improving overall mental health.
  5. Motor Skills Development: Fine and gross motor skills are honed, aiding in activities ranging from writing to sports.
  6. Cognitive Skill Enhancement: OT interventions aid in problem-solving, memory and attention; all of which are crucial for academic and personal success.

At-Home Occupational Therapy Exercises for autistic people

Empowering autistic individuals doesn’t stop at the clinic’s doors – at a2z Health Group, we believe in extending the benefits of occupational therapy into the comfort of your home. Here are some at-home occupational therapy exercises designed to reinforce skills and promote development:

  1. Sensory Integration Activities

  • Texture Exploration: Create a sensory bin with a variety of textures like rice, beans, or soft fabrics. This activity encourages tactile exploration and sensory processing.
  • Balance and Coordination: Simple balance exercises like standing on one foot or walking along a taped line on the floor can enhance motor coordination.
  1. Fine Motor Skill Exercises

  • Stringing Beads: This activity aids in developing fine motor control and hand-eye coordination.
  • Clay Modelling: Using playdough or clay to create shapes helps in strengthening hand muscles and fostering creativity.
  1. Gross Motor Skill Development

  • Obstacle Courses: Set up a simple indoor or outdoor obstacle course to improve gross motor skills, balance, and spatial awareness.
  • Ball Games: Playing catch or kicking a ball back and forth can enhance coordination and motor planning.
  1. Social Skills Enhancement

  • Role-playing Games: Engage in simple role-playing activities to practice social interaction and communication skills.
  • Emotion Cards: Use emotion flashcards to help in recognising and expressing different feelings.
  1. Daily Living Skills Practice

  • Cooking Simple Recipes: Involvement in cooking can improve following directions, measuring, and sequencing skills.
  • Organising and Sorting: Tasks like sorting laundry or organising books by size can enhance categorisation and organisational skills.
  1. Cognitive Skill-Building

  • Puzzle Solving: Working on jigsaw puzzles can improve problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Memory Games: Simple card games or memory-matching games can enhance short-term memory and concentration.

Implementing At-Home Exercises

While these exercises are beneficial, it’s important to tailor activities to each individual’s abilities and interests. Our occupational therapists at a2z Health Group can provide personalised guidance and support, ensuring that at-home exercises are both effective and enjoyable.
