Thanks to Total Wine, we sample a Glengoyne Scotch whisky pack featuring three different expressions, giving us an opportunity to compare and discuss their unique characteristics. We also share highlights from our recent trip to the Barrel and Flow Festival and talk about the latest developments at Stone Brewing, including its plans to exit its three Escondido locations. To round things out, we dive into the differences between Scotch whisky and Irish whiskey, exploring what makes each style distinctive.

The Beer Is Fundamental Show returns with Episode 157 after our annual summer hiatus. We want to kick off the episode by featuring Kessler Run, a smoky dark lager from BarrieHaus Beer Company in Ybor City, Florida. Known for producing exceptional lagers, BarrieHaus delivers a beer with subtle smoke, toasted bread flavors, and remarkable balance, making it another standout from one of the hosts’ favorite Florida breweries.

We reflected on a busy summer spent with family, including time with their grandsons and attending family reunions. BT enjoyed reconnecting with relatives in Tampa, while Lady T’s family reunion took place aboard the Carnival Glory. The cruise exceeded expectations. Great company, enjoyable drinks, and relaxing stops—including Celebration Key, where we sampled local beer while enjoying the beach—made for an unforgettable vacation.

The episode also highlights the excitement surrounding the FIFA Club World Cup. We really enjoyed watching elite soccer and seeing international visitors embrace American culture. From oversized food portions and ranch dressing to Buc-ee’s and unexpected free nachos, we appreciated seeing guests experience uniquely American traditions. We also discuss Cabo Verde’s surprising success, the U.S. team’s strong performance despite falling short against Belgium, and the excitement of watching the championship match while aboard the cruise ship.

We want to congratulate Debbie Lagone, winner of the Barsys Shaker Pro giveaway, courtesy of Barsys, before looking ahead to one of the year’s premier craft beer events, the Barrel and Flow Festival, where the team will once again provide on-the-ground coverage. Finally, we want to highlight our visit to Tampa’s newly opened Hop State Brewing, located on Benjamin Road, where we toured the brewery, sampled the offerings, and sat down to ask the team about their newest venture in the area’s growing craft beer scene.

This is our annual Faded Kingdom Beer Festival review. Faded Kingdom Beer Fest was January 31st, 2026 and it is always the final beer festival to cap off Orlando Beer Week. Located at beautiful Lake Baldwin in front of Tactical Brewing. This festival benefits the Back To Nature Wildlife Refuge.

As usual, they had some of the best beer in the country, along with a block party, food vendors, a market, and live armored combat.

Faded Kingdom is always billed as one of the elite beer festivals in Florida if not the South.

EPISODE #151: The Non-Alcoholic Edition

BT is observing Dry January and it is hard on him. He is detoxing and it is driving him crazy. Lady T is trying to be as supporting as she can. But she is not observing Dry January.

This episode’s libation is The Green Fizz. It is a non-alcoholic drink that has a gin base. It is quite tasty. The ingredients are below. It is a recipe that can be found on the site of one of our new advertisers, Viski.

Ingredients: (Serves 1)

1½ oz Zero proof gin
2 oz Green juice (spinach, kale, apple)
1 oz Pineapple juice
A few slices of cucumber, kiwi, and green apple
Ginger beer to top

DIRECTIONS:

Add cucumber, gin, green juice and pineapple juice to a cocktail shaker and muddle.

Add ice and shake, then double strain into an ice-filled glass.

Top with ginger beer and garnish with cucumber slices.

The brewdown is sponsored by Vintage Vinos in Kissimmee and has been an annual function for years. The way it works is homebrewers provide anywhere from one to 3 craft beer selections. They can be of any variety. But it pays to be creative. People can purchase voting cards for certain amounts. The cards range from$10 to $30. The more expensive the card, the more votes you get. Each card also gives you one or two beers depending on the card.

But we readily admit that we haven't even scratched the surface of what all Disney has to offer. It could be because we spend so much time at EPCOT. Don't let anyone tell you different. EPCOT is for adults. But I digress. We definitely do not take advantage of Disney Springs. Our introduction to The Edison is proof of that. We were able to attend the 2nd Annual Bartender's Bash at The Edison and it was so much fun. As they say, "There are no bartenders here. Only mixologists." That is an understatement. The Bartender's Bash is where eight of Central Florida’s top mixologists compete with their handcrafted cocktails. Guests are able to sample and vote while indulging in perfectly paired bites prepared by The Edison. There's live entertainment and a silent auction with proceeds going to Give Kids the World Village. We did something a little different with this live show. We decided to keep the background noise. We're not sure how we feel about it. Lady T, who is usually camera ready with great pictures was totally off of her game. However, we still enjoyed ourselves. Hopefully, you enjoy the show. Shout out to Rabbit Hole, Brough Brothers, Copper and Kings, Peerless, Oxmoor, and Angel's Envy for showing us mad love. We are going to share one of our favorite whiskey drinks which is an old fashion. Most people make an old fashion like this. Ingredients: 1 1/2 oz Bourbon or Rye whiskey, 1 Sugar cube, 2 dashes Angostura bitters, Few dashes plain water Preparation: Place sugar cube in old fashioned glass and saturate with bitters, add a dash of plain water. Muddle until dissolved. Fill the glass with ice cubes and add whiskey. Garnish with orange slice, and a cocktail cherry. Served: On the rocks; poured over ice Standard garnish: Cocktail cherry, Orange slice Drinkware: Old Fashioned glass Base spirit: Whiskey However, this is how we like our old fashioned like this. Ingredients: 1 1/2 oz Bourbon or Rye whiskey, 1/2 oz Bittermilk Bourbon Barrel Aged Old Fashioned Mix Preparation: Pour in the whiskey. Add the Bittermilk mix. Stir. Put in a round or square ice cube. Garnish with orange slice, and a Maraschino cherry. Served: On the rocks; poured over ice Standard garnish: Maraschino cherry, Orange slice Drinkware: Old Fashioned glass Base spirit: Whiskey

I am BT aka O-Beer-Wan Kenobi the Jedi Knight of craft beer and (this is Lady T.) These damn hurricanes are putting a hurting on the southeastern part of the United States. We recorded this episode only a few hours after the eye of Hurricane Milton went directly over our house. As veterans of many hurricanes, we can sat that if you sit around waiting for something to happen, you are going to go crazy. You are powerless. So, most people try to be as normal as possible while going through these things. All you can do is pray that you have the least amount of damage that you can have. Our home did not have any major damage. This episode is dedicated to those who are suffering from the damages of Hurricane Helene and Milton. There are several fundraisers for some of those breweries and organizations that have Go Fund Me pages. They really need your help. New Origin Brewing was completely destroyed along with Wedge Brewery at Foundation , Zillicoah Beer Company and even plēb urban winery. Please visit their websites and donate toward their recovery efforts. The beer for this episode is from Burial Brewing. It is The Stillness of a Personal Hell. It is an 8.5% ABV. It’s a medium body with a creamy mouthfeel with a nice crisp finish for an imperial IPA. Nice smell of strawberry and watermelon. The taste of orange, strawberries, candied lemon, and watermelon. It has a light bitter finish. However, the dank of the hops is still there. Beer Is Fundamental is dedicated to all of you who love craft beer. The American-style imperial stout is the strongest in alcohol and body of the stouts. Black in color, these beers typically have an extremely rich malty flavor and aroma with full, sweet malt character. Bitterness can come from roasted malts or hop additions. In this episode, talk about the different types of stouts. We also give the highlights of this year's Kissimmee Brewdown. We also have some other beer festival news. EPISODE #118: Barrel and Flow Festival

The Barrel and Flow Festival was everything that we expected and more. This was our third trip to Pittsburgh for the festival. Furthermore, they definitely showed why they are our favorite craft beer festival and the number one craft beer festival in the country. First, we were able to speak to several different people at the festival from brewers to people providing services like mental health. Secondly, and most important, we had a bunch of great beer. The beer for the show is the Adjunct Machine Stout by Barrel Culture Brewing. It is an 11.75% cloud of sweet chocolate and malted milk balls. It’s the perfect receptacle and instrument for all the adjunct flavorings you could hope for. Also, they recirculated the beer over wild Thai banana, roasted peanuts, toasted coconut, and marshmallows. Beer Is Fundamental is dedicated to all of you who love craft beer. There were two beer festivals held at the same time in Orlando last week. There was the SMaSH Beer Festival. The Florida SMaSH Beer Festival was created to celebrate the creativity and camaraderie of breweries in the Sunshine State. The other was the Faded Kingdom Beer Festival put on by Tactical Brewing Company. We went to Faded Kingdom because we've been to the SMaSH Festival many times. Plus, we wanted to show love to Tactical. They always support us. We are always looking for cool beer festivals near us. You have probably had the Belgian Tripel and may not know the key ingredients to making such an amazing beer. You may also be one of the many who mispronounce it. Tripel is a beer full of ester aromas and flavors. So much so that the esters primarily define the style. Tripels are also not three times anything. Confusing that fact, there is another Belgian style of beer called a dubbel, which is pronounced like double. We have a great discussion on this while drinking the The WAY Tripel by Bold Monk out of Atlanta. We also discuss some of the great beer festivals happening around the country. This is not episode 100. This is episode 99.5. We wanted to do a show before the Holidays. We also want to introduce a new move to the show. We usually We pop open a beer after the first commercial break. However, we want to get into the beer at the beginning. That way if you are drinking with us, we can be drinking with you because we know that you are more than likely drinking before the show and you are definitely not waiting until we get to the first break. Also, this way, if we have more than one beer, we can spread it out amongst the show. So, the beer that we have tonight is the Dogfish Head Utopias Barrel Aged World Wide Stout. The Dogfish Head Utopia is the Sam Adams little brother. The result is a jet-black, rich and roasty beer with balanced notes of espresso, cocoa, sherry and vanilla that clocks in at 17.3% ABV. There is a serious issue in the beer industry and we don’t know how this is going to turn out. There is a serious Aluminum and Can Shortage hitting the beer and soda industries. In this episode, we have a snippet of a song from Solemn Brigham (@solemnbrigham). He is 1/2 of the group Marlowe. His music has been featured on Gatorade's G is for Greatness ad campaign, 7-Eleven's Harmony Korine ad, and NBA2K22. South Sinner Street is his debut solo album. The song is Vantablack. While sitting in one of our favorite beer establishments, we noticed that they had some of their sours and a couple of their stouts. I wanted to try them all. But we knew that the sours would go very fast. One tapped out while we were there. Yet, we didn’t know what I should have first. Sour or stout. We understand the method as it relates to bitterness and color. We know it's always the softer beers first, so starting with pilsners/blonde/amber then IPA, then red/brown ales, is normally the way to go. Dark/strong beers are always last. But where does sour fall into this line up. During this episode, we have the Perenial Artisian Ales SUMP COFFEE STOUT. It’s an imperial coffee stout is made in collaboration with Scott Carey & Co. at South City's Sump Coffee. They chose a coffee from the "La Virgen" region of Colombia. We also have the Schmoojee Strawberry Blueberry Puffsicle Cotton Candy by Imprint Beer Co. Its pretty much made of cotton candy, strawberries and blueberries. Its that time of the year. It’s the Fall or Autumn, whichever one you prefer. And along with this time of the year, we have none other than pumpkin beers and, of course, stouts. However, we are going to focus on the pumpkin beers on this episode. We lucked up and got a great selection from our good friend Matt over at Bone Sack Speakeasy, right here in Saint Cloud. In this episode, we have three pumpkin beers to try courtesy of O’Fallon Brewery out of Maryland Heights, Missouri. First, Pumpkin Beer Don’t be fooled by mere pumpkin flavor… This is the real McCoy! We use soooo much real pumpkin in our mash that it adds hours to the lauter. Second, Maple Bacon Pumpkin Red Ale This pumpkin Red Ale has a rich malty backbone of toasted caramel candy sweetness. We used a blend of smoked malts from Weyermann Malt in Germany and a touch of salt to achieve a soft natural smoked bacon flavor that balances with the sweet caramel notes. Third, Salted Caramel Pumpkin lives up to its name as a malt forward caramel flavored ale with the perfect balance of sweet and salt. To achieve this balance, we are using a blend of Caramel malts and Lactose for a creamy sweetness and add just the right amount of Pink Himalayan Sea Salt as a contrast. HAPPY NATIONAL IPA DAY!! We figured that this will be a great day to do a show. National IPA Day on the first Thursday in August celebrates the beer known as India Pale Ale Beer. IPA is one of the most popular types of craft beers, it’s also making a resurgence with local microbreweries. Many are experiencing success as their brew finds its way into local restaurants and pubs. First, for this episode and for National IPA Day we focused on two IPAs from two Breweries. The beers that we had were the Verification Code Double IPA from Cerebral and the Pillow Stacks Double IPA from Outer Range. The Verification Code is hopped with Nelson Sauvin, Citra, Lotus & Motueka. The tangerine and orange flavors are abundant in this one. Pillow Stacks Nose is wonderful, fresh mango and passion fruit. Taste is a nice hybrid between the IPA and NEIPA styles. Orange and tangerine combine nicely with the mango and passion fruit over a light but large malt base. Finish is a moderate citrus rind bitterness.

The Ellipsis Brewing SourFest also known as the Fruit Punch Project Day was an absolute hit. There were a very good amount of breweries present and they all had some great beers. Lady T had to work. So I was stuck doing the show by myself. However, I was able to speak with a few people as they sipped their sours. First, my three favorite beers of the festival were:1. Spreadsheet Wizard by Corporate Ladder2. Monday Morning Bluez by Design Builder/Ellipsis3. Fruit by the...Pineapple, Mango and Coconut by Ellipsis Don't get me wrong. There were a lot of good beers including some awesome mead. You know how I feel about mead. However, these were the ones that I rated a 5. I had to do the show in three parts because I became overly excited at the festival (no, I was not drunk). Lady T will be with me next time to keep me under control. LOL!

The dates of the festival is September 10 through the 12th. Tickets are still available so it would be great if you will join us. We also became the newest members of the craft beer club called Craftapped. Craftapped is a social craft beverage club with 350+ various partner breweries, cideries, distillers, restaurants and bars located in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Colorado, Missouri, Florida, Kansas, North Dakota and Iowa. Not only do we go into detail of how it works. In fact, we describe the benefits of being a member. The beer of the show is the Lone Pine Brewing Oh-J Double IPA. It is described as a carefully selected arrangement of late-addition hops to produce a citrus punch. We got an email from a listener which asked for our definition of craft beer. Hopefully, we did not disappoint. We also dove deep into Inside Hook magazine's article "Which MLB Ballpark Has the Best Craft Beer?" They ranked all 30 ball parks. This episode is a short one. It is less than 30 minutes (not that our episodes are super long anyway). However, we do give you a great beer and some happenings that focus on craft beer. We discussed the home-brewer's competition that was held in Saint Cloud, Florida this past weekend. Though it was a small event, there really wasn't a bad beer. There were 11 contestants with around 14 or 15 beers in the competition. There was a great amount of Belgian beers. A nice selection of IPAs and a couple of good pilsners. The beer for this episode is the Sprinkle Factor by Ology Brewing out of Tallahassee, Florida. We had a good discussion about the flavors and quality of this craft beer.
