1. I’ve been missing Los Angeles a lot this week. My husband bought me an early Mother’s Day gift of a huge Porto’s Bake at Home box. I also just finished reading Malibu Rising (which I loved!). Wish I was eating a fresh guava cheese tart from the beach but my daydreaming will have to do for now.

2. I am completely obsessed with these hands-free slip-on sneakers. I bought them after getting a very targeted Instagram ad while 8 months pregnant and they’ve been a game-changer for chasing my toddler while also holding all the things.

3. I’ve been greatly enjoying the AVL Today newsletter. It’s a great way to stay up to date with all things Asheville and I love the personality that they add to each mailing. I’ve learned so much about the city and always feel like I’m “in the know” thanks to this daily dose of local news.

4. Colby is obsessed with these little retractable toy cars. He loves to race them around the house and I love that they are an easy small toy that fits in my purse for an simple distraction when we are out and about.

1. I had Covid over the last week, and so, spent a lot of time by myself. I am intensely grateful for Paxlovid that for sure had me feeling a lot better in record time. I had a day and a half of intense symptoms (fever, chills, cough, body aches, shortness of breath), a day more of aches and weakness, and then miraculously felt like nothing had ever been wrong! Can’t recommend the antiviral enough. (I got mine by way of a telehealth visit on Sesame, scheduled for within an hour!)

2. Two pieces on motherhood that I found to be in conversation with each other recently (ok and also two pieces that had me sobbing): This excerpt from Jessi Klein’s new book, I’ll Show Myself Out, that I cannot wait to read and The Lost Daughter starring Olivia Colman. I made the mistake of reading and watching these while I had Covid and was unable to physically touch (hug, cuddle, suffocate) my kid for a week… do not recommend.

3. Our house project is very underway. We have a second story! The framing and roof is complete and windows are getting finished up soon. We’ve also started to enter some of the more fun phases (for me) of architectural detailing, tile deliveries, light fixture decisions, etc. I liked this read on construction tips from women in the industry.

4. The Motherly podcast has been doing a mini-takeover by Joyce Brewer, blogger/author/parenting talk show host, and I’ve so enjoyed all of the episodes so far! I think bringing on a different host with different perspectives and experiences was a great call by the show.

Obviously motherhood and parenting in general is all about change and growth. This third year of watching Ernie seemed to explode with growth in ways I didn’t know would be so amazing (and also at times oh-so-challenging) to be a witness to.

Ernie spent about six months in weekly speech therapy sessions this year and truly now you’d have no idea he was ever struggling with language as almost everything he says is intelligible and, as toddlers are wont to do, he never stops asking us questions. He never stops moving. He is a huge fan of climbing and running and exploring the world around him. On vacation recently he spent more than an hour peeking into tide pools with us and exclaiming “look at them all!” when we saw sand dollars littering the beach. His favorite color is light green, he will eat French fries for every meal, and whenever we come home from being out he tells his favorite stuffed friend, Blue Puppy, “I missed you Blue Puppy!” while giving his nose kisses. He will “play sink” for as long as we let him, dumping cups and bowls into each other and trying to figure out how drains work (enormous appreciation to Jacob here who built Ernie an outdoor sink setup that recycles water so we can stop feeling so much pain for the environment during this endless activity). He wants to wear his “beeyooweeyoo” jammies (firetrucks) every single night.

Exactly five days after Ernie turned two he started preschool, just as I was starting out at a new job. It’s been an interesting side-by-side to observe — him exploring a new space, making friends for the first time ever, and figuring out how to cooperatively exist alongside other humans; and me returning to a somewhat familiar space (albeit fully virtual), trying to make new work friends again, and remembering how to exist alongside other humans. Both of us spending significantly less time together than the year prior. Sometimes it feels heartbreaking to be missing so many moments of his day; and often it feels freeing to know he is perfectly cared for — at a place he adores, among people he hugs every single day when we arrive. The juggle in our house of school, full time jobs, pets, and the ever-present and constant deluge of meals/dishes/laundry/vacuuming is hard. It’s hard and overwhelming in ways that aren’t always easy to verbalize.

The highs of being Ernie’s parent are so high. Tears easily spring to my eyes on an almost daily occurrence because he’s made a new silly rhyme, he figured out a new skill (the limit does not exist on the number of different containers that can contain pom-poms), or he finally is interested in picking out his own outfits and chooses some great pairings. And the lows, the challenges, are low. The three year sleep regression is hitting us all hard right now and I’ve tried to keep in mind how fleeting everything thus far has seemed, to try to remind myself that it all continues to move so fast, this current struggle will be a blip. Eventually.

Happy Third Birthday, my sweet Ernie. You take my breath away with how much I love you… and also when you play jungle gym parents and are literally squishing my lungs.

Here are my reflections on year one and year two of motherhood.

1. I’ve been very intrigued by Aldi for a long time but have never been to the store. I feel like they are constantly being mentioned in podcasts that I listen to and very celebrated by people that live and shop frugally. But I’ve always been a little intimidated. I was happy to stumble upon this article… apparently I am not the only one. It kinda makes me want to go even more though.

2. We’ve been slowly working on decluttering my parent’s house and have found so many wonderful treasures to share with Colby from my childhood. We’ve also found lots of things that are still in great shape but ready for another home so it’s been fun to do lots of thrift store drop-offs and we always keep a box of books in the trunk in case we encounter a Free Little Library.

3. I think this new Oreo packaging is super creative, what a fun marketing tactic!

4. My book club pick this month was Circe by Madeline Miller. I really enjoyed the book but it was hard to keep track of all the characters and I relied heavily upon the family tree. I started with the audio version but ended up switching to the kindle copy to also help me stay focused.

1. The Motherly podcast did an episode with Willow Pump CEO Laura Chambers and it was so nice to hear that the world of pumping is (slowly) innovating and coming into the 21st century.

2. Absolutely drooling over this flat-packed cabin retreat. My husband and I are almost always bandying about the idea of a secondary/vacation home somewhere in the nearby California mountains and I love finding “easy” pop-up type cabin builds to fuel the dream.

3. A coworker sent me this writeup on urgency recently, detailing when it’s a valid sense and when it’s an inflated practice that really only results in consequences.

4. I basically speed-read Zakiya Dalila Harris’ ‘The Other Black Girl‘ this week finishing in (I think) less than a day, even with work/parenting/life going on at full force. I love a good genre-breaking read and this one did not disappoint. I hope she writes a dozen more books in the very near future.

5. The Delta variant has been causing me a decent amount of stress and anxiety lately. Two reads I found helpful this week were The Atlantic’s ‘How The Pandemic Ends‘ and Nature’s ‘How do vaccinated people spread Delta? What the science says.’ I think we’re far from the pandemic actually being “over,” but there are things to be done that can speed up that result and alleviate some of the societal stressors we’ve all been feeling for the last ~18 months.

It’s our blogiversary! In many ways, it feels like just yesterday we were writing posts 1, 2, and (whomp whomp, we missed celebrating our 3rd year), but then again it also feels like it’s been a million years. We’ve actually also spent this entire year apart (a first in our friendship) which had been super hard and means we have mostly communicated on zoom and through our many it’s a thing posts.

Our boys have grown into loud and busy toddlers, Ernie turned 2 a couple of months ago and Colby’s 2nd birthday will be here before we know it. Laura started a new job and we’ve both been tackling the crazy 2021 world of working and parenting in a way we never could have imagined when our sons were born.

Laura has been running and making plans for a big home renovation. Stella’s been cooking a lot and  enjoying the small-town life. We’re both looking forward to the world getting a little bit back to normal (dare to dream?). And we finally have plans to see each other in real life in a few weeks as Stella makes her way back to LA for a few work events this fall.

We’re looking forward to seeing each other and giving a big cheers to 4 years of blogging. Thank you for reading along as we figure out … Are We Adults Yet??

  1. I made a huge pot of gumbo this week and it was fantastic. I’m going to add it to my list of favorite instant pot meals so I remember to make it over and over again.

2. Colby’s obsession with trucks continues and his new favorite book is Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site. We also just bought him this little pull wagon so that he can move big piles of weeds from the garden to the woods. He loves helping move things around just like the trucks he admires.

3. I’ve been working on perfecting my scrambled egg game because we have them every day for breakfast. I found this New York Times Cooking recipe with lots of tips for getting perfect consistency.

4. I read The Magnolia Story this week which is a memoir from Chip and Joanna Gaines of Fixer Upper fame. Though I am not much of a reality TV fan and have only seen a few episodes, I did enjoy the book. Their story was mostly focused on the “before” fame part of their lives as they built their business and pivoted through many different types of financial situations. It was also interesting to hear a story focused on flipping houses and interior design. It was a super easy and quick read so also helped me on my way to my 2021 reading challenge of 50 books.

FROM: LAURA

1. I finished ‘This Is All I Got‘ this week, a book by author Lauren Sandler that chronicles the first year of a homeless woman’s journey into motherhood. It was not an easy read, but one I whole-heartedly recommend. The mother, Camila, has a story that is indicative of many systematic privileges and pitfalls that lower income individuals face every day. Roxane Gay’s substack newsletter focused on universal/guaranteed basic income this week, and it was an excellent pairing coming off the story of Camila.

2. I make my own oil facial moisturizer and am always surprised at how long one batch lasts. I last purchased everything that goes into the mix in March of 2018 and only just this week did I have to reorder one! I use a combination of Marula, Rosehip, Argan, and Grapeseed oils.

3. Since stopping breastfeeding by boobs have definitely changed shape and I haven’t been super happy with any of my bras (for over a year…). I placed an order with Parade this week to try a few different styles (in a few different sizes) in the hopes that I’ll enjoy opening my lingerie drawer more rather than the disdain I’ve been associating with it lately.

4. We’re moving into some heavier planning stages of our house renovation and deciding on our general contractor and designer this week. It’s been simultaneously very fun and stressful to do all the interviews, do a lot more Pinterest-ing than I have in years, and generally think about the “look and feel” direction of our addition. Get ready for a ton of construction and interior design content from me in the coming weeks and months!

1. I’m 10 years late to the party, but finally started watching Homeland. I think maybe season 1 was spoiled for me back when it first came out and I didn’t end up watching it. I am now very excited to have 96 episodes to watch and no recollection of the spoiler.

2. I was excited to discover a new park this week that’s super close to our Airbnb. It was a good reminder to “look beyond yelp” and explore our neighborhood ourselves without relying on the internet. That being said, I also enjoyed getting to be the “first to review” so that others will discover it.

3. Colby has a new found love for stuffed animals and my husband and I are enjoying every minute of it. He likes to line them up together on the couch to read books. It’s been a weeklong read-a-thon at our house as he pulls out all of his favorites to share. We’ve especially been enjoying Good Night Beach, the Melissa & Doug Poke-a-Dot books, and this picture book First 100 Animals.

4. I was super excited to discover that Levain Bakery (home of the most amazing cookies in NYC) has a bake at home option that you can purchase at Whole Foods. I’ve been meaning to try a copycat recipe for ages, but this has made it so much easier!

5. Our book club pick this month was House in the Cerulean Sea and I really loved it. I have not read a fantasy book in a while and it was really fun to escape from the real world and enjoy the magical world TJ Klune created. I primarily listen to rented audiobooks but since this one was so popular and I had a limited time to read it, I ended up not being able to download it from the library. So I actually bought the book and read the physical copy. I think that made the magic feel even more real and I’m excited to pick up another “real” book for my next read as well.

1. My favorite thing about this week was The Stack’s episode drop on Wednesday with author Mira Jacobs. It was host Traci’s first time delving into the world of graphic novels and it did not disappoint. I also had never read a graphic novel and was entranced and delighted by how much I liked it. I blew through the July book club pick of The Best We Could Do by Thi Bui and quickly read through Jacobs’ own book, Good Talk, as well. All around fantastic picks and I’m thankful for the introduction to a new genre for me!

Magnatiles are our FAVORITE activity right now.

2. Somehow my husband hasn’t ever really been on the FIRE, financial literacy, intense interest in our finances bandwagon the way I have. I send him all the links I really like (as well as all our finance blog posts) but it’s just never really piqued his interest… until this week. I don’t totally know what’s changed but all of a sudden he’s much more engaged in having those conversations and I’m not longer the only one constantly logging into and refreshing our joint Personal Capital account. I know he’s been listening to more finance-related podcasts lately, so maybe that’s it! All that to say, we’ve been doing a lot of deep diving on the Engaging Data early retirement calculators as well as the Safe Withdrawal Rate Series from Early Retirement Now and it’s been fun to envision what our future might hold.

3. I really loved this post by Emily Henderson talking about what kids actually remember from trips and vacations (and the difference between the two!). As a kid, my family went to the same beach and rented the same house every year since I was born. I have huge nostalgia for that specific place and building as it was our big escape for the year. Conversely, my husband’s family did a lot more trip-type getaways while he was growing up — road trips around the US, multi-city excursions to Europe, etc. It’s been interesting to talk together about what we want to prioritize for our family and what we want to share with Ernie in terms of vacations and trips, and this article helped me put words to a lot of the more nostalgia-based feelings I have about returning somewhere again and again.

4. Somehow I only learned about the Amazon Shopper Panel rewards program a few months ago. I’ve reached my $10 rewards every month since and I’m super enjoying the freebie cash! (Insert disclaimer here about how I’m simultaneously trying to buy less with Amazon because I don’t agree with a lot of their business practices, but it’s also so hard to argue with the convenience factor…)

The view from our Airbnb’s yoga studio 🙂

2. I took Colby to the pool for the first time this week and he had a blast! I bought him these floaties and he also enjoyed playing with our donut-teamed inflatable tube. Luckily my sister has a beautiful outdoor pool at her apartment complex and we went on a weekday morning so it was totally empty. Going places on weekday mornings has been one of the many perks of working a west coast job while living on the east coast.

3. I signed up to receive the Green Chef meal kit box again this week. It’s been a few years since I gave them a try and I was super impressed by their recipes, ingredients, and packaging. Excited to keep getting boxes delivered and making my week a little easier!

4. I read two different books about money this week. The first was, The Nest, a story of adult siblings and the fate of their shared inheritance and then dealing with the consequences of spending it before receiving it. It was interesting to read this novel at the same time that I was making my way through Die With Zero, a personal finance book about spending your wealth as you earn it rather than leaving behind money after you die. I really enjoyed reading both the same week and it’s made me think a lot about how I want to spend (and leave behind) my own money.

5. I was inspired by the books I read and also a Facebook post I saw about someone losing a boyfriend in their early 30s to start working on a Legacy Binder. I found a slew of resources including a few from of my favorite bloggers and podcasters. Let the over-organization begin!

FROM: LAURA

1. It has been a podcast heavy week for me! Since the start of the pandemic I’ve definitely found it a bit harder to stay up to date on all my favorites, but some weeks just click and I go on enough walks, pair podcasts with house chores, or miraculously have downtime that I get to devote to listening and catching up. This week was definitely one of those!

2. This First Name Basis podcast episode about a real-life, teachable anti-bias moment is a great example that Jasmine explores from her own life. I hope she does a lot more along these lines because I found it so helpful and useful to hear another parent’s thought process and techniques when it comes to correcting, informing, and exploring ways that bias creeps into our lives and those of our children. I had been meaning to become a Patreon supporter for a while now and this episode definitely pushed me over the edge to go sign up asap.

3. Last week’s episode of the Call Your Girlfriend podcast’s “Summer of Friendship” series with Claire Mazur and Erica Cerulo (of A Thing Or Two (and more) fame, also nearly always a highlight in my podcast playlist) made me laugh and smile so much. I love hearing podcast hosts let loose a little, and this origin story and friendship details were just what I wanted to get to know them all a little better.

4. The Girls Just Wanna Have Funds podcast wrapped their first season with an episode all about goals and it was inspiring to hear how they both go about setting, tracking, and updating their personal, financial, and career goals. Especially enjoyed hearing about Saira’s long-term goal to found and run a non-profit dedicated to early financial literacy (this may or may not have been a text I sent to Stella already saying, “You should be friends with her and help found/run this!!”).

5. I loved the book ‘Bringing Up Bebé.’ I read it when Ernie was three or four weeks old and it was a serious game-changer for both my husband and I on how we approached the early days of parenting. The TL;DR boils down to “watch and observe” and react from there after giving pause and space. It changed our sleep game and then later on helped with food, play, autonomy, and so much more. It’s a guiding principle for us and a book we have referred back to often in the last two plus years. The Only You: A One and Done Podcast did an episode with the author, Pamela Druckerman, and I so enjoyed hearing some behind the scenes tidbits on how and why she wrote it, as well as things she’s learned since, and her take on the “only” conversation.

1. I’m on vacation!! As of last night my husband, toddler, dog, and I are all up in the mountains just over an hour away from our house in Los Angeles. I’ve been really looking forward to a nice break after the first few months at my new job and I’m hoping this break gives me some recharge moments. I’m loaded up with lots of books and beers and hiking plans. We are renting an airbnb and the bedroom Ernie is in has a queen bed so we invested in these bumpers to (hopefully) keep him put. Worst case scenario he sleeps on the floor on his nap mat from school.

2. A bunch of different bloggers and influencers I follow are pregnant or just had babies and I find it such an interesting job to have while managing parental leave. Jess at The Golden Girl detailed her plan for self-employed leave, Mackenzie of Design Darling talked about the additional help she’s brought in to make a leave with a newborn and toddler possible, and She Picks Up Pennies has talked about how to stop hustling while soaking in those newborn snuggles.

3. This bathroom redesign/overhaul had me thinking major Stella vibes with all the lemon theming and accents! I love the wallpaper here as it provides visual interest without being too overwhelming because of the tiling on the lower half of the wall. Probably a style I’m going to steal for one (or more!) of our bathrooms after our rennovation!

4. I’ve been craving a good gazpacho for a while (this. summer. heat. 🥵) and think I’ll try out this one while we’re on vacation.

1. Today is my birthday and I’ve been struggling all week to remember how old I am turning. I decided to blame it on “now that I have a kid, I’m focused on him” rather than feeling so old I can’t remember my age :/

2. I’ve finally gotten around to doing some travel booking this week after putting it off for way too long. We have several weddings this fall and are beginning our return to work (back to the West Coast) plans as well. It’s been a while since I booked a rental car but I was pleased to find that AutoSlash is still working wonders, car booking rates were half as much when I searched on their site!

3. My go-to pizza dough recipe takes 24+ hours to rise. It’s amazing but I didn’t have quite that much time this week so decided to try this quick and easy one to save myself the time and it was really good.

4. Colby received a Radio Flyer Scooter and a Tinker Truck for his first birthday. He was sort of excited back then (7 months ago!) but now he’s finally really getting the hang of them and loves to zoom around on his own. It’s always mind-blowing to see how much he is growing and changing each day.

5. I’ve been enjoying watching Happy Endings this week. It’s a nice light show that takes my mind off the day but doesn’t usually end on a cliffhanger so I can turn it off easily if I need to switch gears into other things.

1. I finished ‘Mediocre‘ by Ijeoma Oluo and it was a very powerful read. I’m recommending it to all of my white, male friends and colleagues as a necessary book and I think white women can get a lot out of it, too. The way Oluo frames the historical contexts and draws parallels to very recent events is so smart, and also so eye-opening. Another fantastically written book by a writer known for getting white people to recognize and act on their privilege.

2. Related by more than the fact that they are just books, I also got through ‘To Raise a Boy‘ this week and it was a great pair alongside ‘Mediocre‘ — they are definitely in conversation with each other. As the mother of a young son, I’m constantly trying to shift my perspective to what it’s like for him growing up and this book gives so many concrete examples of when and where those shifts need to be put in play. Ernie is too young to really pick up on a lot of the societal norms I try to point out and explain to him, but we are already trying to be very intentional in our language about and around him when it comes to gender, race, and equity. I love the children’s book ‘A Boy Like You‘ for a good starting point to hopefully build on this conversation as he ages.

3. We recently acquired a piece by Jessi Raulet (@ettavee on Instagram and beyond) from the Liz Lidgett Gallery for our living room and I’m so in love. I’ve been following Jessi for a while and lusting after everything she produces. It was very cool earlier this year to see her branch out and partner with Pottery Barn Teen and Pottery Barn Kids to bring her bright colors (and hopefully an imparting of a love of art) to a younger audience. I rarely feel very artistic myself, but I’ve been toying with the idea of getting her Bright Book workbook as a way to explore any creativity that might be hiding inside.

4. Using this summer post from Emily as a to-buy list to update my summer wardrobe. Buying new clothes is not a thing I do very often (my new running shorts were the first addition to my closet in quite a while 😂), but this whole list looks so lovely and has me lusting after some new summer digs.

Can’t contain the curls!

2. My husband’s birthday was last week and I got him a few simple gifts (this book and these slippers) plus an extra long sleep-in morning while I took Colby to the park. He also went out solo to do a yoga class at a local brewery which was actually a big treat. We realized we don’t do enough solo-self care and need to add it back into our day-to-day routine.

3. I realized about halfway into the COVID stay-at-home order that I hadn’t bought any new clothes in a really long time. Especially since I’d been wearing Laura’s hand-me-down maternity clothes for many of the months leading up to lockdown. It was pretty easy to keep up the trend through all of last year and I just finally bought myself a couple of new things now that we are halfway into 2021. I am very obsessed with this cotton t-shirt from Madewell and these Amazon Essentials H band sandals.

4. This week I read Raising Your Money-Savvy Family For Next Generation Financial Independence. I loved that the book started with a few teachable moments that I can get started on in the next few months with Colby. It’s co-written by a father-daughter team and they each share stories about how learning about money came into play at every stage of a kid’s life. I learned a lot of good tricks for how I want to teach my son about money and also a little about how I’d like to talk to my parents about money as well. My favorite part was that they addressed how parents becoming financially independent and retiring early played into their relationship with their daughter and money. It was cool to see both of their perspectives on this. Looking forward to reading Doug’s blog, Military Guide, and checking out a few of their recommendations for further reading listed in the epilogue.

1. In trying to celebrate Juneteenth appropriately this year, our family is focusing on a few different areas of education and support. I’m participating in this Hollaback! intervention training today that is focused on stopping police sponsored violence and anti-Black racist harassment. I’ve done one training with them before and it was very useful and highly actionable, definitely recommend keeping an eye on their calendar of upcoming events. Beyond that I really enjoyed this week’s episode of The Stacks that had guest author Clint Smith speaking about his new book, How the Word Is Passed that I’m very excited to start reading this weekend. Another podcast that is doing great work, especially for parents of young children is First Name Basis (this week’s episode on celebrating Juneteenth has lots of great suggestions including this cookbook that we got last year on Juneteenth and is one I love, Jubilee).

2. My mother was visiting us this week to help take care of Ernie while he had a week off from preschool. It was so nice to have a visitor (our first since the pandemic started!) and so, so lovely to see Ernie’s relationship with her blossom more with in-person time. They did many walks to the park throughout the week and my mom surprised Ernie with some new activities and toys each time they did a trip (this bubble pack, this bubble shovel, and this airplane kit were big hits!).

3. I found this article very interesting on renting vs owning a home right now in various cities. I have a few different friends who are all in varying stages of the home-buying journey and it’s been interesting to hear their different takes on why renting doesn’t seem like it makes sense anymore. From a purely numbers perspective it looks like renting is a choice a lot more of us should be making right now!

4. My husband and I binge-watched Ted Lasso a few weeks ago and loved it. I thought this was a hilarious internet recipe rabbit hole to find yourself down trying to figure out the shortbread recipe!

5. I’ve been following more and more “bookstagrammers” lately and almost my whole Instagram feed is filled with books which makes me intensely happy and also makes my to-read list epicly long. Bookographic is an account the data-loving side of my brain is always excited to see a new post from! (Semi-related: this site is a lovely representation of so many different people’s varied reading interests.
