Tyler and Amanda were on the hunt for a good companion for their Rottweiler. However, the Rottweiler was fairly dog-selective. She decided to look at Last Hope because she went to Cedar Run and knew about the relationship between the two. Amanda says Last Hope was great about having meet-and-greets so they could find just the right fit. Also, all the volunteers who helped them were amazing. More than just blindly having a parade of dogs have a meeting with their dog. The volunteers took the time to discuss their needs and then suggest some dogs that might be a good fit.

Then they met Mila (formerly Connery) and the puzzle fit. Their current dog got along with her, and they liked her, so we processed the adoption. The adjustment period was pretty smooth, according to Amanda. She credits the great assistance they got from the volunteers and the work the foster family did with her. Mila had a little separation anxiety at first, but that has resolved itself. Oh, and there were a couple of accidents, but that happens to the best of us.

It was discovered that Mila had elbow dysplasia in two legs. Of course, Last Hope made sure the medical issues were addressed before Mila went to her new home. They got that little hurdle behind them, and they say you’d never know she was injured.

Tyler and Amanda think Mila is great. She’s goofy and playful and just fun to be around. She is four and still has tons of energy. She has daily walks and loves to be out and about. She wrestles and does laps around the couch. She also loves her daily Kong, but wishes her people would put fewer healthy snacks in it!

When asked how everything went, Amanda said, “Just very thankful for everyone at Last Hope; you can tell everyone truly cares about the animals in their care, and they do a great job with the adoption process.”

We love to hear how well Mila is doing and are glad they felt like the adoption process was smooth. We are so happy we could help out this family and find a forever home for Mila.

When Heather moved back to the Cedar Rapids area, she wanted to find an organization to foster and volunteer for. Lucky for us, she found Last Hope.

While she was fostering other dogs, Maely the beagle (formerly Babes) needed a soft place to land, so they asked Heather if she could foster her. She already had a beagle at home and loves the breed, so she agreed to foster her. That was the plan anyway. When Heather saw Maely, it was instant love, and she knew she had found her new home as long as she would fit in with the other furbabies in the house.

This all happened a couple of months after the derecho, and Maely found a weak spot in the temporary fencing and decided to go on an adventure! She was found, and the fence was fixed, but she proved to be quite the escape artist. She slipped out of every harness they tried, including the supposed “no escape” harnesses. After some trial and error, a solution was found, and it is safe to take her on walks.

After a while, Maely settled in well with the other animals in the house, and the transition was pretty smooth. She attended a training class at Cedar Run, so she learned some basic skills. She still looks for ways to escape, but Heather is wise to her ways!

Maely has a sweet, easy-going temperament and is always up for whatever Heather wants to do. Leisure time? Great! Walk? I’m in! Car ride? Let’s go! She is a cuddler and comes running when Heather gets home and promptly rolls over for belly rubs.

She likes to keep watch over her domain, either on the ottoman looking out the window or on the back patio to get some sun. Her favorite pastimes are taking walks, going for car rides, and going on “sniffaris” at the dog park. And, of course, who can resist a fun trip to Grandma and Grandpa’s? All those fun things lead to snoozing, preferably on or under some soft blankets.

At Last Hope, we affectionately call someone like Heather a “foster failure” because she just couldn’t let Maely go to any other home. We have great foster homes, like Heather’s, and are thankful for her dedication to the pets of Last Hope.

Peggy Lee is a lovely older kitty with a soft cream-colored coat and an even softer heart. Though she can be a bit shy when meeting new people, she warms up quickly once she realizes you’re there to offer kindness… and maybe a cozy spot on the couch. Peggy Lee enjoys affection on her terms. She is all about gentle pets and quiet companionship, but she’s not one for being picked up and held. Give her a comfy blanket and a calm home, and she’ll happily settle in as your loyal lap cat. She’d love nothing more than to curl up next to you while you watch TV, read, or simply unwind after a long day. If you’re looking for a sweet companion who will reward your patience with purrs and peaceful company, Peggy Lee might just be the purrfect match.

Peggy Lee’s adoption fee is $85 and includes spay surgery, being up to date on vaccinations, and a microchip with free lifetime registration.

If you want to meet this absolute beauty, please complete an adoption application HERE.

Rommy & Sophia are a bonded pair of pups looking for a home together. Rommy is the golden boy, around 10 years old. Sophia is the white and brown gal and is estimated to be around 7-8 years old. Together, they bring out the best in each other! They love each other’s company, and you can often find them lounging around and sleeping together. Sophia tends to be on the shy side, but Rommy has helped her to become braver.

Rommy is full of love and has a mission to be your shadow. He’s the definition of a “Velcro dog” –  where you go, Rommy will be right behind you, ready to offer moral support during every family meeting, snack run, or Netflix binge.  This little gentleman has a partially collapsed trachea, which just means walks are better suited with a harness instead of a collar. He is currently working on house training and lives in a foster home where a doggie door is used. While progress has been made, he’s a short guy, and the struggle to get through the dog door is real, so he’d just prefer that you open the door for him to preserve his dignity.

Sophia is more timid, but with some time, she will warm up to you. She would prefer to have a safe space to go whenever she’s feeling overwhelmed. A crate or space under a piece of furniture will do; she isn’t too picky! She enjoys being outside in the yard, doesn’t mind the rain, and is mostly house-trained. She will use pee pads in the house if they are available to her. She gets very excited for food, so you’ll have to be careful not to overfeed her because she has a tendency toward love handles (that are honestly adorable).

Their adoption fee is $450 and includes spay/neuter surgery, being up to date on vaccinations, microchips with free lifetime registration, and a free basic training class at Cedar Run Company.

If you’d like to provide a nice home for this great twosome, please complete an adoption application HERE.
