South Bethany Christian Church, located west of Columbus on what is now known as Youth Camp Road, was also started by New Hope in 1849.
]]>Columbus Church (Tabernacle Church of Christ/First Christian Church)- “The first house of worship in Columbus was built in 1841 and services alternated between New Hope and Columbus until July 1855 when a separate congregation was organized at Columbus, composed of about sixty members. The first house (of worship assumed) in town was destroyed by fire in 1953 and was immediately replaced by a brink structure on Jackson Street.” The publication goes on to say that another building (Tabernacle Church of Christ) was erected in 1878 for $23,000 and was dedicated Feb. 9, 1879, by Isaac Errett with Z.T. Sweeny as listed as minister at that time. He preached from January 1872-June 1879.
