The Knockout 2026

This year 27 players entered the popular club tournament. A Preliminary Round involving 11 pairs of players, with 5 players having Byes saw the field reduce to 16 for the next Round. That Round eliminated the next 8. The 8 remaining players were then reduced to 4 for the Semi-Finals.

The Knockout 2026 games used the 80+10 time control used in other tournaments and in the League. The results were recorded on the ECF League Management System (LMS) and the games are ECF rated.

The Semi – Finals

The semi finals saw Christian Westbrook paired against Peter Eales, a win for Christian, and Graham Stuart against Bill Purkiss.

Graham and Bill drew.

Then they played with reverse colours – and drew again.

They played two rapid-play games to keep things moving – Graham won one, Bill the other…

A coin toss finally resolved the issue – and Graham went through to the Final.

Graham and Christian have agreed to share the Trophy for 2026. Congratulations Graham and Christian!

Tournament director Steve Dunleavy congratulated the pair on their achievement:

Dear all Christian and Graham drew their game tonight and have agreed to share the trophy. Well played! I hope you enjoyed the Final and will hopefully see you in next year’s competition.

Kind Regards

Steve

CF Ladder trophy in CF box

Good Afternoon All,

There were 4 games on the ladder last night in which 8 of the top 9 players were involved, reflecting the fact that there is only one more week left of the current ladder. The top 3 players, Andy M, Peter P and Dave Frampton fought off challenges from players on lower rungs! ;-

Andy Petley          0-1     Dave Frampton

Peter Przybycin   1-0     Dick Meredith

Andy Mills              1- 0    Bob D’Cruz

John Kooner   0.5 – 0.5    Geoff Parish

Tournament organiser Rob Sims has submitted game results throughout the year to the ECF for grading purposes using LMS.

The play offs

The top three players on Tuesday 1st September 2026 will play off to decide the eventual winner. Players in second and third place play each other and the winner plays the player in first place.

The next Ladder for 2026-27

Dave Frampton has proposed an alternative ladder or new tournament which takes into account the differences in rating between two opponents. Dave has provided a detailed summary of how this would work and is happy to explain more about it at the AGM. The proposed version will be presented as an agenda item for our AGM on Wednesday 9th September.

Tournament director Peter Przybycin announces the pairings for the Championship and Book Prize 2025-26 Final Round. The closing date for all games is 28th July 2026. This gives players time to arrange for their games to be played, including any outstanding games from previous rounds. The winners of the Club Championship and of each Section of the Book Prize will be those with the highest scores on 28th July, regardless of games played.

Peter announces the 7th Round

We have reached the final round of this tournament.

This round is different, in that the closing date is three months away, on 28th July.

This will also be the closing date for the whole 2025-2026 tournament, after which no further result will be accepted.

The winner of theClub Championship, and of each Book Prize groups, will be the player with the highest score on 28th July, regardless of games played.

Games can be played out of sequence.

All games should be played at Chandlers Ford Chess Club, or alternatively at the home of one of the players if both players agree.

Rate of play will be 80 minutes each for the whole game, plus 10 seconds per move.

If a digital clock is not available, e.g. when playing at home, the rate of play can be 90 minutes each for the whole game.

When playing at Club, clocks must start by 8:00pm.

Online games are not permitted.

If two players tie for first place in any section, the trophy or book prize will go to the winner of their individual game. If that was a draw, then there will be a replay with reversed colours. If the replay is drawn, the player with the lower published grade (at the time of the replayed game) will take the prize.

Enjoy!

Best wishes,

Peter P.

Tournament Sections and LMS

The players are spread over four Sections: the Club Championship, and Book Prize Sections A, B and C.

The tournament is an all-play-all within each section. This format means that games can be played out of sequence – so the tournament isn’t delayed by games not yet played from previous rounds.

The games are ECF graded. The player pairings and results can be found on the ECF League Management System (‘LMS’). Links to the relevant LMS pages below:
