BW President Lee Fisher sent a letter to all staff and students explaining these cutbacks on May 13. Fisher noted that these changes are “grounded in [BW’s] commitment to ensuring that BW remains strong, sustainable, and able to deliver” on its promises to students.

Fisher described the decision as part of a larger effort to stabilize the university’s financial situation. It allows BW to adapt to changes in enrollment trends and student demand in order to maintain financial stability.

Fisher’s statement also referenced other colleges taking similar action and shifting resources to programs with greater demand. Enrollment has fallen at Baldwin Wallace and other universities across the country as birth rates have declined in the U.S.

“Across higher education, institutions are being called to align their academic offerings more closely with student demand, workforce needs, and long-term financial sustainability,” Fisher noted.

The 35 programs to be axed include nine undergraduate majors and 19 minors, as well as seven graduate programs. Students who currently major in these fields will be able to finish their degree, and the programs will be phased out with the students, Fisher said in his letter.

The following undergraduate majors will be discontinued:

• Community health education promotion
• Economics
• Human resources
• International business
• Mild/moderate educational needs
• Music theory
• Physics
• Sociology
• Sustainability

The university is also phasing out its Master of Education program, Fisher said.

In October 2024, dozens of faculty members were either laid off or took buyouts as a result of budget and program reductions by the university. The university had also cut 23 jobs in February 2024

Fisher noted the difficulty of making the decision, but maintained that it is “the foundation for a stronger, more focused, and more vibrant future,” which will lead to a “more focused, distinctive, and sustainable BW.” 

Just 2.5 percent of faculty and less than 5 percent of students at BW will be affected by these changes, according to Fisher. The President asked for the community to continue its support for students and the university’s future.

Each city will not only celebrate the founding of the country, but also what makes each hometown unique.

America 250 Tri City’s website displays a quote by Esha Kahn that says: “A hometown is a special place in many people’s hearts. More than just a geographical location, they are roots of identity, foundation of values, and canvases of many memories. However, every hometown is unique, as it shows the culture, history and community spirit behind it.”

Each of these cities will be leaning into their own unique identity. For Berea, it is being “The Grindstone Capital of the World.” For Middleburg Heights, it is being “The Onion Capital of the World.” For Brook Park, it is being the “Home of NASA Glenn Research Center.”

While each city will have its own celebrations, they all, along with every city across the country, will host a reading of the Declaration of Independence on July 8 at exactly 6 p.m. Locations of each reading will be announced closer to the date.

For its celebration, Berea will be hosting the Grindstone Festival at Coe Lake on July 4. There will be a parade at 11 a.m. followed by a celebration from noon until 10 p.m. at Coe Lake Park. The event will feature paddleboarding on Coe Lake, inflatables, live entertainment and a concluding fireworks ceremony over the lake.

Middleburg Heights will have its Summer in the City event lineup, and Brook Park will host Homedays over the weekend of July 10-12. Details about each event can be found on city websites.

A central focus of the America 250 Tri City celebration will be diving into each city’s history over the course of the summer through live speaker events. The website states: “WELCOME TO OUR SPEAKER SERIES! You were taught American history in school, but do you really know LOCAL history? This is your chance to learn about the people and places in our area.”

Two upcoming historical events in Berea are a discussion of Pearl Street Neighborhood at 7 p.m. on May 27, and a discussion of Early Berea Village Neighborhood at 7 p.m. on July 15. Both events will be held at the Berea Historical Society on 118 E. Bridge St.

The website states, “In 2026, America marks a historic milestone, the 250th year since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. This once-in-a-generation anniversary kicks off a nationwide celebration, inviting all 50 states, along with cities across the country, to take part. Communities are encouraged to share their stories and spotlight the people, events, and businesses that have shaped our nation’s journey over the past two and a half centuries. Join us as we honor the past and inspire the future.”

At the front of all this new territory is President Donald Trump, who has served his second term quite controversially for a number of reasons. Let’s look back at some of the things that have happened in the presidency since the start of this school year:

Trump has authorized and overseen foreign military operations that carry questionable legal justifications in the U.S. and undeniably violate international law. He has attacked foreign allies and threatened Greenland with takeover. He has also attempted to consolidate more power in the executive branch by directing the Department of Justice to prosecute his political opponents and concerningly called for the federal government to take control of local and state elections.

Trump delivered poorly on the highly anticipated release of the Epstein files in December 2025, only releasing files with significant redactions after a long trail of statements asserting that the files were a hoax. Additionally, some Democrats have noted that the Justice Department made little effort to communicate with victims and provide them with the justice that they have been demanding.

Trump’s economic policy has been largely ineffective in the past months. Recently, the war in Iran has caused a disruption in the oil market so strong that some experts predict that American consumers could feel the effects for months after the war is resolved, and the end of the war seems to be stretching further out of sight than previously thought.

Trump and his administration’s rhetoric toward political opponents has been divisive for many years, but it reached into alarming territory in January, when former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem baselessly described Alex Pretti as a person who “wanted to do maximum damage and massacre law enforcement,” while many more Trump officials, like Stephen Miller, joined in labeling Pretti as a domestic terrorist soon after he was shot and killed. In his short time in office, the president appears to do more damage than good for the nation.

Trump’s presidency will not be ending soon, and the test of how the nation will respond to his actions is constantly ongoing. Trump’s approval rating has been experiencing a general downward trend and has been especially low since the beginning of this year. Trump even managed to find himself in hot water with some of his own loyalists after posting a photo on Truth Social in April seeming to depict himself as Jesus performing a healing miracle. So, how have Americans shown their dissatisfaction, and how should they show it in the future?

The most popular test of Trump’s popularity will be taking place in November in the midterm elections. With midterms looming, Democrats have already secured certain key victories in special elections across the country this year. A Politico analysis of 229 state and federal elections that have taken place since Trump’s inauguration shows Democrat victories in 193 of them. This includes overperformances by Democrats in Republican strongholds, such as Democratic candidate Sam Sutton of New York’s 22nd state Senate District, who won his election in the same district that voted 78% for Trump in 2024.

The pushback has not stopped at election wins; in March, an estimated 8 million people participated in the third No Kings protest, the largest No Kings protest so far and, once again, the largest single-day protest in American history. Many more decentralized protests have taken place in cities across the nation in response to many of Trump’s actions, such as soaring gas prices from the Iranian war.

To be sure, it is not clear how the U.S. will recover from Trump’s divisive rhetoric, ineffective economic agenda, and harmful foreign policy in the future. But what many Americans have been making clear is that they want change to come now; they want to pushback against Trump even if it seems difficult or action seems ineffective.

Any Democrat that wins in the midterm primary needs to answer the call from voters and take the stance against Trump that Americans have been yearning for in the last few months, if not throughout the entirety of Trump’s term. Many of the protests taking place do not just exhibit a dissatisfaction with Trump, but also with Democrats’ inaction toward Trump.

Democrats need to be especially active if they take back control of Congress after the midterms. Voters will be looking to see whether their newly elected representatives deliver on the promises to address concerns about Trump with real attempts to rein in his power-consolidation efforts that have been unsuccessful and unpopular.

While Trump fails working-class Americans repeatedly, Democrats need to respond with more than simply acknowledging his failures. What voters can do now to help the U.S. recover from these shortcomings is to take their sentiments about Trump and translate them in office with representatives who are just as unhappy as we are.

The Cavaliers, for the first time all season, are walking into the playoffs with a completely healthy roster. I am confident that it gave them a large push going into the series, with almost everyone getting minutes.

In Cleveland and Toronto’s first matchup on April 18, the Cavs came through with a 126-113 victory, with some impressive scoring from the guards. Donovan Mitchell, unsurprising to many, scored 32 points on 11-20 shooting from the field. He came out hungry for a win. After him was bench player and former starter Max Strus, scoring 24 points. He went eight for ten from the field and ended up having the highest-scoring playoff game of his career. Additionally, according to the Cleveland Cavaliers, Strus became the first player in Cavs history to score at least 20 points while going at least 80% from the field as a bench player.

Two days later, on April 20, the teams stayed on Cleveland’s floor for Game 2, which ended with the Cavs going up 2-0 with a 115-105 win. Mitchell had back-to-back 30-point games, scoring 30 that night. James Harden was right behind him with 28 points and Evan Mobley had a strong 25. Cleveland’s bench did not contribute quite as much, only scoring 19 points among the five who got floor time.

Unfortunately, Cleveland’s strong sputtered out in Game 3, resulting in a 22-point loss for the Cavs. Toronto outscored them in three of the four quarters, but this game came down to the fourth quarter, where Toronto put down 43 points to Cleveland’s 23, ending 104-126. On the Raptors, Scottie Barnes and R.J. Barrett each had 33 points along with Collin Murray-Boyles with 22 and Jamison Battle with 14 off the bench. Cleveland, however, had a very strong distribution of points, with six players scoring in double digits, including Harden, Mitchell, Mobley, Strus, Jarrett Allen, and Jaylon Tyson.

Ultimately, the loss came because of a late-game fourth quarter collapse, and the Cavs’ 20 turnovers throughout the game.

With the Cleveland-Toronto series officially going to at least five games, they will for sure battle it out again on Cleveland’s court on April 29, with Game 6 and Game 7 being on May 1 and 3 if it comes to that. Personally, I think this Game 3 loss isn’t a bad thing. A little wake-up call for Cleveland is a good thing, giving them the extra push to get through the rest of the series as swiftly as possible. If the Cavaliers make it to the Eastern Conference Semifinals, they would either play the Detroit Pistons or the Orlando Magic, with that series currently tied 1-1. Detroit has been dominating all regular season, going 60-22 on the year, putting them third in the league, and would make for a tough matchup for the Cavs.

It is an exciting time of the year to be an NBA fan! I truly believe in this Cavaliers team and the strength we have in our starting five and bench. All we need is grit and internal drive to get us around this corner and into the semifinals. Let’s go Cavs!

The Career Center is offering resources such as peer-to-peer mock interviews, virtual workshops through the university, companies and programs, job fairs, and help with writing a resume. Additionally, through an online tool called Handshake, students can find job postings and connect with potential employers.

In January, the Career Center hosted a job fair that attracted 60 companies who were looking to hire BW students. Lori Stagliano Moran, the Career Center’s operations manager, said it was a huge success, and they had a “couple hundred” students attend.

The Career Center can also help students by preparing them for future job opportunities by teaching them networking skills, teaching them how to use apps like LinkedIn or Glassdoor. These apps can help students figure out where they want to work, what kind of work they want to do, and what employers are looking for.

Students can also come to the Career Center to discuss their options after college and work with both staff and peers to develop a plan. Stagliano Moran recounted a recent success story. She described how a student came to the Career Center hoping to practice for an internship interview he had in three days.

“We did a couple of rounds of practicing, reviewing, and getting feedback,” Stagliano Moran said. “He came back to me week later and said, not only did he get the interview, he found… a pathway to a full-time position upon graduation! It was a pretty competitive interview too.”

This semester, the Career Center sent out a survey for graduating students called the First Destination Survey, which asked students about their career path after BW. These findings will be reported to NACE, the National Association of Colleges and Employers, which helps students with finding jobs and offers support for returning alumni.

“It literally takes one minute,” says Stagliano Moran. “It’s very helpful information to use to attract incoming Yellow Jackets, to get students to come here. And when you leave BW, then we can start to have a database of alumni. It circles back so that you can help future alumni.”

Stagliano Moran said she wishes more students knew about the resources the Career Center offers and how to take advantage of them. She encourages all students to check out what the Career Center has to offer.

One example of student success is that 95% of students who work with the Career Center to develop and use a Handshake profile find employment, join the military, or continue education within six months of graduating, according to Dani McEwen, a peer career advisor at the Career Center.

“The way we help students best is by sticking to best practices and teaching them things that I wish were common knowledge but aren’t,” McEwen said.

The Guards were relatively quiet in free agency this winter. However, they did sign right-handed pitcher Shawn Armstrong, a bullpen arm who gave the Texas Rangers a productive 71-game workload in 2025. They also added first baseman Rhys Hoskins. Hoskins spent the first six seasons in Philadelphia and the last two with Milwaukee. He owns a 120 OPS+ throughout his career, giving the club a nice platoon option alongside Kyle Manzardo.

The Guardians have gotten off to a 14-12 start, good for a tie with Detroit for first place in the division. They continue to be one of baseball’s best teams at home, winning eight of their first 13 games at Progressive Field.

Early on, José Ramírez passed Terry Turner’s record for most games played in Cleveland’s franchise history, appearing in his 1,620th game with the club. The first couple weeks also saw a breakout from rookie outfielder Chase DeLauter. On March 28, DeLauter became the third player ever to hit a home run in each of the first three games in his career. He joined Trevor Story and Kyle Lewis, who did so in 2016 and 2019, respectively. Chicago White Sox rookie Munetaka Murakami joined the elite club one day later.

BW Sport Management student Cooper Riley expressed his pleasure with the team’s performance early in 2026. “The emergence of guys like Daniel Schneemann and Brayan Rocchio have provided the offense with a much-needed boost that has kept us a threat to start the year. It’s also amazing to see the pitching staff continue their dominance from the end of last season, and they’ve given us a chance in almost every game,” Riley said.

Just as they did during their miraculous comeback last September, the Guardians have thrived behind outstanding starting pitching and have won with just enough offense.

While the season is still young, it appears that Cleveland has put itself in a good position to compete for the AL Central title. If the Guards can pull that off, it would win the division for the third consecutive season.

“Since opening, it’s been crazy, but in a good way,” Mowery said. “The support I’ve been getting has meant the world. Nowadays, my day-to-day is playing catch up to meet demand, because we’ve had such great traffic.”

Before Thrifting Tree had an in-person presence, Noah operated an online store and did popups on campus. His goals have already been evolving since opening.

“It’s all about problem solving,” Mowery said. “Within a year, I want our inventory to rival a regular thrift store, which takes a lot of work. I want to keep meeting requests and customer demand.”

When asked about his goals, Mowery said, “I want to make this shop in Berea the best I can. I have so many ideas, like a vintage book selection and a vinyl shelf. I also want to expand our women’s section, because it’s been doing super well since we launched it on Valentine’s Day.”

“By year two, I want to have a second store,” Mowery said. “It will still be in Ohio but where is still up in the air. I want other communities to have access to a store like The Thrifting Tree.”

Noah is currently working on curating a brand image for Thrifting Tree, which he has worked on extensively. “I want people to know us when they see us,” he said. “Branding is everything. I’m super into earthy tones and understated Y2K.”

Owning a business can be tumultuous, and Noah provided some insight on the unexpected changes he has faced as the owner of TTT.

“It is not what I thought it would be- in the best way possible,” Mowery said. “At first, I thought we would get a customer or two a day. I’ve been so surprised and impressed with the attention we’ve received!”

“I see empty hangers as potential. I thought this would just be a cool place on campus, but we’ve evolved into a serious business,” Mowery said. “The growing pains are real, and I think every student business needs to hear that. For me, there’s no ‘we did it,’ it’s still ‘we’re doing it.’ The work is never finished, but I like it that way.”

Noah shared what he learned from being a business owner, both unexpected success and stress.

“To me, it’s hard to give up responsibility,” Mowery said. “I always want to be involved in day-to-day operations, but I’ve taken more of a management role. I love what I do, so it’s hard to delegate, even if I have to.”

The Thrifting Tree frequently has popups at BW, with the most recent one occurring April 21. Although far beyond his first popup, Noah shared some insight into this recent event.

“It was great,” Mowery said. “We are planning an upcoming popup in the fall, and for suspense, I’ll leave the location up in the air. I also love getting to work with other businesses on campus and seeing them succeed.”

Being the owner of a curated thrift store, Noah has a lot of advice to offer on how to thrift. He provided tips for those looking to get the most out of thrifting.

“Always look for the new racks,” Mowery said. “The put-back racks are also full of great items, as they end up being accidentally curated. Salvation Army is my favorite store, but don’t forget about Plato’s Closet and other resellers. Sometimes, they have amazing vintage finds!”

The Thrifting Tree has a goal to help shoppers love their clothes and value them for years to come. The business has roots in sustainability and responsible buying, and Noah hopes to promote this.

“I want people to keep their items, to wear them, to love them,” Mowery said. “Curated stores are a great way to find the items that you really love. My goal is to have customers keep items for five to ten years, closing the circle of fast fashion and disposable clothes.”

When Bieber was announced as one of the headliners for the 2026 Coachella Festival, he quickly became one of the most anticipated performers.

Weekend one of his sets brought in mixed reviews with fans and critics alike, expressing mixed emotions about whether his performance proved to be extravagant enough for such a big stage.

He came out, dressed comfortably in his own clothing brand, Skylrk, featuring a red hoodie with the brand’s logo, long black shorts, black boots, and sunglasses.

The stage featured a large, curved platform with a built-in table for his MacBook, where he chatted with viewers at home via Coachella’s YouTube livestream.

His setlist was largely dominated by tracks from his recent albums, Swag I and Swag II, including hit singles like “Yukon” and “Daisies.” In addition, he included a segment where he played a few of his hit songs like “Baby” and “Beauty and a Beat,” as well as his old YouTube covers.

One of the surprising moments, aside from the guest appearances from musical artists like Tems and Dijon, he showed clips of famous internet memes. This gained the attention of viewers at the festival and across social media who reposted and poked fun at the singer, with some calling the set ‘lazy’ and ‘chaotic’.

Aside from the critiques, the show, though more of a stripped-down performance, allowed Bieber’s talent to truly shine through, showing that he didn’t need the over-the-top production to prove his worth.

A heartwarming moment was when he harmonized with his younger self, singing along to songs from his early years, the camera showing a beautiful over-the-shoulder shot of Bieber looking at his younger self on the big screen. This made for an emotional moment for fans, and a seemingly healing moment for him.

Week two shows Bieber finding his footing as he seemed much more relaxed, engaging with the crowd and bringing noticeably higher energy.

This performance, much like week one, was star studded with appearances by Big Sean, SZA, and Billie Eilish, which made many fans jealous as she got the honor of being his “One Less Lonely Girl.”

Week two also saw a difference in the setlist, including more songs from his recent albums as well as deep cuts like “Up” and “No Pressure.”

The aftermath of his historic performance showed a significant spike in his streams, as he achieved a career milestone with seven of his albums charting in the Billboard 200 simultaneously.

It wasn’t just his music gaining attention, Skylrk came out with Coachella exclusive merch items that sold out both weekends, garnering $15 million in sales overall.

There’s no doubt that with the record-breaking numbers he’s achieved, Bieber will surely go down in history as one of the most successful artists to grace the Coachella stage.

April Reign is regarded as one of the most highly-anticipated days for Baldwin Wallace University students, especially those who participate in Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL). While many see April Reign as a day to get together with friends, for those in FSL, they compete throughout the morning between each other in various competitions, the most anticipated event being tug-of-war.

Since 2006, Alpha Gamma Delta (AGD) has won first place in tug every single year except 2020, when April Reign was canceled due to COVID-19. Each year, the other sororities have tried to dethrone AGD, but each year has been as unsuccessful as the last. This year, however, AGD’s streak of dominance came to an end.

The April Reign competitions, now called Springtime Showdown, take place every year at Wallace Lake early in the morning. This year, each of the fraternities and sororities took turns competing in tug-of-war and a game show. In previous years, dodgeball, obstacle courses and scavenger hunts were also competitions that FSL would look forward to.

Keira Donkers, a senior at Delta Zeta (DZ), has been doing tug for three years and looks forward to it every time. “I’m not a very competitive person, but when it comes to tug, I’m ready.”

Donkers was not only excited for herself to be a part of this historic victory, but also for her fellow sisters.

“I have not stopped watching the video, and I’m very proud of us. I think we did an amazing job.” Donkers said. “…this year, it was the most cohesive I’ve ever felt within our chapter…and it feels good to be on a team who you get along with.”

Cheyenne Johnson, a sister of AGD, shared how, despite her sorority’s winning streak coming to an end, she was still proud of the effort all her sisters gave.

“I at least want my sisters to be proud of themselves and be proud of what they’ve done and proud of being a part of something like this,” Johnson said. This year AGD ended up placing third overall in tug, but came away winning the sportsmanship award.

Johnson also shared how alumni from various chapters often come to support during the competitions. “There’s a dedicated group of alumni that come to cheer us on specifically for tug,” Johnson said. “It’s nice to see friends that maybe I just talk on the phone with but haven’t physically seen in a while.” Johnson also mentions that she is looking forward to coming back next year to support AGD next year as an alumna.

In the past, negative comments online have caused tensions to rise prior to the competitions. While the intensity of competition sometimes rises to an unhealthy level, Donkers also shared how April Reign can bring the FSL community together.

“We’re always screaming…we try to scream for both teams when they’re up [for tug],” Donkers said.
