Oftentimes the fruits of our actions now don’t ripen until far in the future. About 3 years ago we interviewed Austin writer Jon Fortenbury on his “deconversion” from the Christian faith. Jon considers this a significant shift in his life, so a year on from that episode we recorded a follow-up to see how it was going. That episode then sat on my computer for 2 years, and Jon just recently reminded me that I never posted it. Things were tumultuous in my life back then, and certainly haven’t let up, but those are paltry excuses for keeping such a candid and important discussion as this one from seeing the light of day.

I’m sorry, Jon. Please forgive me.

[Production Note from Stephen: This episode was originally recorded on May 17, 2015. Yes. Quite a long time ago. I recommend re-listening to (or watching) Episode 151 for a hint at where this came from. My personal frustration with an inability to effect change in the world came to a head last year around April 2015. Many “necessary” things in my life had fallen away, and I saw a new path open up before me. I’ve been following this path ever since, and it has required almost all of my time and dedication. Now, in an interlude of sorts, I’m picking up some of the pieces of BF that I left hanging and getting them out into the world, starting with this rather odd Betweenisode. We didn’t know what would happen. We didn’t have guests. We didn’t have topics. We didn’t even have microphones. But over the months and years we put stuff out there, not caring too much about the reception (“Bad”, remember?). We just enjoyed ourselves to the max, spoke our minds, and brought anyone along who was brave enough to ride our mildly crazy train.

Continuing our long-standing traditions and inaugurating some news ones this episode, Kevin and I (appropriately) took on the topic of nostalgia once again. Enjoy the show!

Episode 153: Moral Prodcasting

Imagine you’re a teenager in the parking lot outside a grocery store. It’s hot, you’re tired, and you’re late. Your mother has strictly commanded you to be home in 5 minutes, and you have just enough time to make it. Suddenly, you spot an elderly woman struggling with a heavy cart of groceries. Cars honk at her as she shuffles toward her sedan. You see her flushing with anxiety. What do you do? Obey your mother and hope the woman is okay? Ignore your obligation to your mother and help her? Why? Why not?

Moral choices of various caliber arise for us daily. Maybe they’re not all as intense as this case, but nonetheless, how do we make our moral decisions? Where do our values originate? This episode Kevin and I revisit the question, examining our own moral compasses, a few case studies from our experiences, and some relevant philosophical perspectives. Episode 134: Hats Off

It’s a nice day to start again, folks. The end of January marked the beginning of the first Coursera MOOC purely focused on the venerable phield of philosophy. In this first application of the first week of material (what I meant but forgot to call “Coursera Diaries Part I”), Kevin and I test out Dave Ward’s conception of philosophy as “the activity of working out the right way of thinking about the things that matter most to us.” Television happens to matter quite a bit to me and Kevin, so we put on our best drinking caps for one of our more intentionally F-isodes in a while. So man the boats, don’t touch that dial, and prepare to go meta, it’s BF time!

Weekly Why 012: Radiolab is Scared of Poststructuralism

Okay, granted, it’s been a very long time since our last “Weekly Why.” They are not weekly, nor do they even strictly deal with explanations, questions, or anything that might involve “why.” Even the index number “12” is not entirely accurate (there have been a few discarded potential Weekly Why’s since 008, if you’re curious). Put simply, the Weekly Why is just our way to share super rabbit trail content that didn’t make it into a main episode (and bring up our episode/month* count a little). This time around Kevin had some critical thoughts regarding the very nature of the popular podcast / radio program Radiolab, in particular their unwillingness to dive deep into the issue of truth itself, even when they come face-to-face with it. To much fanfare, the world got a new time travel movie recently. Looper did alright at the box office, but Kevin and I expected something a bit different from the movie we got. Despite annoying police helicopters and a plague of mosquitos, the two of us recorded our thoughts on the film immediately after seeing it this past Looper Tuesday (sorry Kevin, I had to use the joke) in the beautiful open air of The Domain. The Wachowskis have a new TV show, spaceship simulators are AWESOME, and Daikatana is still funny all by itself. It’s BF time!

It stretches the bounds of the traditional platformer, interweaving gameplay and story in a way few video games manage so elegantly. Dead though the author may be, I value Jonathan Blow’s extensive thoughts on his masterpiece, so we rallied the troops and got indie game hobbyist Adam Easterling, alongside aspiring game industry pundit Britton Peele and gallbladder-less Kevin Saunders to put Braid into vaguely philosophical context, among many other things. Playwright Cormac McCarthy has been to some dark places. His works are generally somber, morbid, or just downright depressing. The Sunset Limited is no exception. A month or so back one of our listeners suggested we tackle this film as a follow-up to our take on Synecdoche, New York. Suffice it to say we we had some very mixed thoughts on it as a work of philosophy, film, and theatre. I mean, it’s no Star Wars Holiday Special, especially if you throw in the Rifftrax. Episode 120: Intellectual Simulation

When I first started writing these introductory paragraphs for our episodes, I tried to make them as wacky and witty as possible. Using inside jokes, obscure references, and other crudely fashioned humor I endeavored to give them some spice that would entice the potential listener to click the “Play” button. As time went on, however, I found myself being less and less creative and enthusiastic about the construction of the introductory paragraph. It is the penultimate step in my workflow, and by the time I get here I’m usually just ready to get things over with and click “Publish.” Yet still I write them… never knowing whether anyone reads or appreciates my work.

Anyways, this episode we (attempt to) do what I have (sort of) done above and give you, our listeners, a (very, very) brief introduction to the deeply disruptive world of post-structuralism. You can read up on it, mull it over in your mind, and then read some more, but get ready to question everything you (think you) know and hold to be true (the idea of “truth” included, of course). What you come out with is both up to you and entirely not up to you, all at once. Have a listen! It’s in stereo…

Episode 119: Giant Monster Whiteboard

There comes a time in every genre’s life when it must look upon itself in a mirror, carefully inspecting the features and subtleties that have shaped and defined it… then scream in terror as the monster to end all monsters suddenly materializes in the reflection, spurring the genre to fight tooth and nail, pulling on everything it is to become something stronger, deeper, more utterly kickass.

You might say Cabin in the Woods, love child of Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon, does just this for the horror movie genre. On this episode Kevin and I discuss the film immediately after seeing it. We highly recommend that you see the movie yourself before listening since we dive freely into its structure and themes. Cabin is undeniably hot right now, and for many good reasons. But who am I to judge thespian subtleties, eh? That’s why I called in certified Master of Theatre Kevin Saunders to help me gush over and carefully analyze Canadian dramedy Slings and Arrows. It’s carefully woven story lines and brilliantly developed characters expertly weave the themes of Shakespeare into a modern setting, and make for some lively discussion of course. It’s hard not to come away from the movie Synecdoche: New York without similar feelings (or simply a lack of feeling whatsoever). Recently Kevin and I delved into this systematic deconstruction of reality, life, death, itself, people, relationships, identity, and well… pretty much everything. We spent a mere hour trying to make sense of it, which felt entirely inadequate and is, apparently, far less than some others have. If you haven’t seen the film, this episode will make far less sense than it already does even if you have. Listen, if you dare, as I try feebly to grasp any semblance of understanding about it, and Kevin unrelentingly questions whether such a grasp is even possible. F************K…

Something about the simple act of getting angry, going somewhere, and shouting pithy phrases repeatedly with a group of people all holding signs appeals to our deep inner psyche. Is it the adrenaline rush of potentially getting busted by the authorities? Is it the sense of common purpose and participation in meaningful change? Is it the attention you get for doing all of the above? The world may never know.

Episode 104: Thinking Different

The human race lost one of its finest this past Wednesday, as Steve Jobs passed away at the age of 56. All of us here at BF had opinions to share on the man in the black turtleneck, so Kevin, Jed, Simon, Kiki and I gathered together for our first live-streamed episode in quite some time. Glorify or vilify him, but Steve changed things. I’ve created every single episode of Bad Philosophy on a Mac using GarageBand, tools that never would have existed but for him and his passionate view of the future. We’re gonna miss him, but we’re also going to take inspiration from his drive to revitalize the show.

Part of that revitalization? We’re back LIVE streaming, baby! You can now watch us and chat with us live on the Interwebs again at our official Livestream page once a week. Aging can be a trying process. One day you’re romping around the yard as a little kid. Then you wake up and you’re thirty. Of course lots of fun stuff happens in between, but you get the idea. Our good friend Kiki recently passed this milestone, so she and I got together with Bess and Katey (the former of whom you might remember from an episode many moons ago) to celebrate three decades of her existence with some hardcore anglophilia. Episode 100: Three. Hundred!

Every once in a blue moon, the stars align, the burritos are just *that* good, and the right people end up coming together somewhat consistently over a three-year period to make something truly special. Such it has been for the last one-hundred (or so) episodes of Bad Philosophy. Ever since that fateful evening at a Freebird’s in Lubbock, Texas, we have laughed, debated, and philosophized down so many rabbit trails with so many wonderful people that it truly blows my mind.

To celebrate Episode 100, we managed to gather the *original* squad of Bad Philosophers who were there at the beginning. Kevin and I trotted down to our local Freebird’s to join Matt Legler via Skype and David Ronderos via Google Chat (!) for a little continuation of our free speech discussion from all those years ago, reignited by the recent BART protests and censorship. Not only this, thanks to Kevin’s quick thinking we managed to record enough episodes to have Episode 100 record on EXACTLY the three-year anniversary of Episode Zero! How’s that for manufactured serendipity? I hope you’d expect nothing less from us after so long.

When was the last time you held a door open for a stranger? Refrained from shaking hands with someone while you were sick? Cringed at dipping from that bleu cheese sauce your friend just dipped in after taking a bite from his chicken strip? Likely you don’t remember specific instances. Etiquette is just a part of what you do. But is there a deeper structure to the actions we take in the name of etiquette? Could there be a science to determine the ideal model for human interaction? In a recent article for Charlie’s Diary, Karl Schroeder poses this question and offers some interesting thoughts on how we might “re-wild etiquette.” Too tempting a topic to pass up, we decided to get the band back together, having Kevin Saunders, Eric Beutlich, and I all in the same place for the first time in years! Take a moment to picture something that truly, deeply disgusts you; that photo in the lobby of your doctor’s office, rubbing felt the wrong direction, your own face in the mirror every morning… y’know, that sorta stuff. As it turns out, people get disgusted by relatively similar things, at least according to a couple of researchers with an endless supply of eager survey victims and carte blanche from the IRB. This episode Julie Meadows made her triumphant return to the show alongside myself and Kevin. It was a pretty rank B-isode, but we did manage to throw in some zombies, Star Trek, and a completely unnecessary film adaptation of a decent board game. As the person walks away, you realize you have no clue as to the person’s gender or name. In a drunken haze that miraculously still leaves you conscious of controversial linguistic etiquette, you calmly turn to your nearest fellow party-goer and ask, “Excuse me, do you happen to know eirs name? E and I had a wonderful talk but I never got it.” Presuming this partygoer clearly understood your drunk ass over the Arcade Fire blaring through the smokey darkness, you just avoided an awkward social misstep through the cunning use of the Spivak pronoun. Congratulations!

This past weekend, the Facebook movie (aka. “The Social Network”) premiered in US theaters, racking up a cool $22 million at the box office. Even before the film launched, This Week in Google discussed the film’s “anti-geek” tone and Jeff Jarvis slammed it in his review. Copyright reform advocate Lawrence Lessig also critiqued the film on a number of counts. Before all this controversy, The New Yorker wrote a long and revealing piece about “the real” Mark Zuckerberg, contrasting him with Aaron Sorkin’s character in the movie. Over the weekend Kevin, Kiki, and I all watched the film, and we had a few rebuttals to make on its behalf, partially inspired by webcomic author and blogger Tom Brazelton. Have a listen!

Howdy, folks! Yes, you may throw tomatoes at me now. I really thought that graduating and coming home for the summer would leave me with more time. Sadly, this has not been the case. BUT we are back now, with an episode that’s almost a month old but still delightfully entertaining. Kiki and her friend Bess joined me for a quintessentially BF drive along the fringe of Twilight. I hear Kevin is back in town, an AWESOME fan donated enough money for us to buy an HD camera, and aside from building a vacuum table this weekend, I am FREE! Episode 063: A Big Shiny Piece of Paper

Here at Texas Tech things were shaken up a bit recently with the resignation of Dr. Gary Bell, someone beloved to all of us in the Honors College. Dr. Bell basically built the Honors College over the past 17 years into a mainstay of the university. However, he came into conflict with the upper administration over the past few months on their goal to expand Texas Tech to 40,000 students by 2020 and bring it to to Tier One status. Bell felt that the administration was sacrificing quality education to make this happen. This time on BF we had Kevin Saunders and newcomer Levi Schlegel on to discuss the story and the general issue of research versus teaching in academia. It was a good one, folks. Have a listen!

We call this beer- and bandwidth-infused tribal gathering SXSW Interactive, and this year a couple of us from BF got the privilege of attending it. BF mainstay Jediah Cummins, photoblogger and Rackspace contractor Simon Ponder, and yours truly gathered in the Austin Hilton to reflect on our experiences, share some thoughts on location-based gaming, and forget to talk about robots. Episode 042b: Plato’s Movie Theater

Imagine yourself in a movie theater. It is the only place you’ve ever known. The smell of popcorn, the sticky floors, and of course the endless projected movies on the screen are your reality. What would you believe about “the real world” if this was all you knew? Would you even believe there was one if someone told you?

Plato asked questions like this over 2000 years ago in his infamous “Allegory of the Cave” from The Republic. On this historic episode, Kevin Saunders and I read and discuss the dialogue itself… in character (yes, we are that awesome). Episode 041: How the West Was Mu

Eastern thought has been a curiosity for Western culture ever since Marco Polo made his epic journey to Asia in the 1200s. The legacy of this curiosity lives on, and so Bad Philosophy has decided to undertake the momentous task of reconciling Eastern and Western philosophy in a single episode (because we’re just awesome like that). Episode 028: But Is It Science?

Since the dawn of time, man has peered out humbly at the world through his eyeballs and tried to make sense of it all in some systematic fashion. Aristotle famously set this ship of science on its way when he remarked casually one fine Grecian day, “You know, studies show that women have fewer teeth than men.” Of course, he was full of s***, but that’s beside the point! The A-man set a precedent of discourse that has continued to this very day, according to some experts.

On this episode BF embarked on the adventure of video once again, trying and failing to broadcast via Justin.tv and then returning to our loyal stalwart, Stickam. We had Eric Beutlich back on for his second appearance since co-founding the podcast, and numero uno fanboy Jed Cummins once again operated our camera. It wasn’t scientific, it wasn’t pretty, but it was most definitely BF. Have a listen!

Have you ever actually rubbed elbows with a celebrity? Everyone talks about doing that, but seriously, have you ever actually gone up to a star and asked “can I rub my elbow against your elbow?” Hmm…

Well, in any case, we got to do something akin to that this past weekend at the Bigg Digg Shindigg during SXSW in Austin, Texas. Matt and I got to watch Kevin Rose and Alex Albrecht record a live DiggNation at Stubb’s BBQ and then meet both them plus a bunch of other web celebrities in the crowd afterward. Yeah, we geeked out to the MAX, but it was totally and completely worth it! Oh yeah, and among all the hoopla we managed to record a new BF. As you well know, we here at Bad Philosophy have had our [some might say disproportionate] share of unsavory experiences with audio equipment. Suffice it to say, the majority of Episode 021–a fine, somber treatise on education–came out corrupt, and will henceforth become known as the “Failisode.”

Not ones to give up, however, we decided to roll our weekly Starbucks tweet-up and post-Super-Bowl-watching experiences into a totally impromptu guerrilla episode, centering on the fantastic commercial lineup, Bruce Springsteen’s crotch, the definition of fascism, and Kevin’s new girlfriend [hint: you’ve already met her – gasp!], among many other thoroughly exciting things. Something appalling just happened here at Texas Tech. On the evening of December 10th, Tech decided to pull the plug on our 47-year-strong campus radio station, KTXT 88.1 FM. This move came with no warning, no recourse, and at a moment when students had finished the semester and gone home. Needless to say, we got pissed. Thankfully, BF was right there to pick up on this developing story, and we managed to get (former?) KTXT DJ Benjamin Brown on the show via Skype to give us the inside scoop. Episode 014: The Jolly Llama

So there we were, sitting in the midst of the collective knowledge of our time. Rows upon rows of books lined up at our sides. The scent of the 1960’s wafting through the air. And then, out of the blue, this llama walks out from behind the geodynamics section, looks at us, and just starts laughing profusely, sending shudders of glee down its long, fuzzy neck. We looked at each other briefly, incredulously, and then all at once… we put away the rest of the acid.

Once our high subsided, we got the strangest urge: to do an episode on religion. It’s controversial, it’s deep, it’s something we’ve never before… it’s totally BF. Though our microphones refused to comply (again!), we completed the episode successfully (albeit in 16kHz… oops). Open your mind, put your bias aside, and indulge us as we tackle one of the biggest questions of all time… “Why be religious?”

Instead, we convened over Skype to discuss the American shopping ritual known as Black Friday, as well as a healthy dose of memetics, duckrolling, and other such jazz. Technology is a tricky thing. When it works, it’s wonderful, and when it doesn’t… heads explode. For the most part, BF’s first foray into high-tech recording went swimmingly. We did have a couple of complications, but despite having to crowd around a single AKG condenser microphone, our intrepid panel managed to record one of the best BFs yet. Dr. Webb joined us to tackle Kevin’s simple-yet-deep question: “Is man unnatural?” As you can see by the tag list, said tackling took us on a bit of a wild ride. Episode 008: Microwave THIS

A friend of a friend told me that if you listen to Bad Philosophy on a Microsoft Zune while preparing a Hot Pocket, the microwaves resonate with the current in the headphone wires and cause your ears to secrete Jello! Really … this totally happens … … Okay, you caught us. It’s a pure urban legend, just one of many we discuss on this fine yarn of an episode. Local genius Nick Bergfeld and the beautiful Kimberly Stewart both joined us for the first time, adding a touch of magic and some unintentional cuteness to the occasion. Oh, be sure to meet your swallowed spider quota after listening, or Osama Bin Ladin will forward you knock-knock joke emails from now until the end of the Mayan calendar.

PS. If you’re wondering what happened to Episode 007: Pretentiousism… well, it will forever be known as the “lost episode,” since the sound quality on the recording was discovered to be catastrophically horrendous after the fact. We might attempt to recover it someday, but until then it will be lost forever to the sands of time. On the bright side though, our ordinal and cardinal number sequences are now in sync. (i.e. episode 8 = the 8th episode) Yay…

Episode 006: Metanoids

We’ve started it people, we really have. This time we had no idea what to talk about, so we took what is arguably the first step in the typical death throe sequence of serial entertainment: the Behind-the-Scenes Show (*collective gasp!*). Before you know it we’ll be doing the Blooper Show, followed by the Old-Cast-Member Show, followed by… wait! We’re not dead yet. Why, this week we actually got bold enough to show you our faces. You can watch the full, unedited episode courtesy of Stickam. “Why the heck would I want to see that,” you say? One word: prodcasting. In the future we’ll tweet when we’re recording live, so make sure you’re following one of us.

As for the episode itself, we metaphiles meander through a meta-maze of meta-discussion about meta-this and meta-that. Little history of the show, little thoughts on podcasting, little DNA patenting… You know, the usual. But in the event that we disgust you so much that you must send us a poorly-worded email in ALL CAPS, this is your lucky day. Cheers…

After a rather significant rain delay, the wild of musings of the Bad Philosophers are back. With the healthy addition of founding member Eric Beutlich, we went on a rockin’ roller coaster ride that kicked off with some pondering about free will, meandered around to the homogenization of modern society, and even weathered an unfortunate appearance of Godwin’s Law before dropping precipitously into the depths of the problem of evil and narrowly skirting decapitation. By the end of the ride… well… let’s just say the roller coaster operators had a few “protein spills” to clean up. Enjoy…
