Ten Things 2025 Ten Things 2025 Tue, 23 Dec 2025 02:28:00 +0000 Every year Mark and Brian conjure up a "ten things" list, and this year it's memories of 2025. Brian's cohost for the episode is KC, an Oklahoma girl who is a fan of DoubleShot and just so happened to be in the studio when it was crunch time. The pair taste and talk about Priscilla Gonzalez's Bambito Estate Yellow Catuai Anaerobic Natural, banter about Mango coffee and Mango the street artist, and celebrate the first harvest of Dos Manzanas. The episode ends with Brian's ten things, and then Mark's - from afar.

Mark and Brian begin by chatting about a chocolate tasting with David De Olier from Salento, Quindio, Colombia. Then Juan breaks in to serve his own coffee in the AA Cafe studio. Producer Juan Ramón and Roaster Brian held an event to talk about all things coffee. The audio isn't perfect, but you'll feel like you're right there in the room listening. It's a long one, but probably worth a listen if you're interested in what it's like to be a coffee farmer or how your roastmaster works with producers to get the great coffees served at DoubleShot.

Buy Juan Ramón's Pacamara natural.

And check out our selection of chocolate bars from David De Olier.

Coffee Prices Coffee Prices Sun, 05 Oct 2025 20:50:00 +0000 Brian just returned from a trip to Colombia, visiting Cofinet in the Quindio region. While there, he had lunch with Luz Helena Salazar, owner of Maracay - producer of several coffees in the DoubleShot lineup over the past couple years. Felipe Arcila, co-owner of Cofinet sat down for an interview on the farm. While there, some turmoil came to a head (Brian's head, specifically) about coffee prices and what other roasters are doing to keep costs down. Costs at DoubleShot are not going down.

We cut out a fairly aggressive rant that spontaneously erupted during recording, and Mark and Brian went back for a stab at more civil discussions about what set Brian off in the first session. Listen at your own risk.

Order that Maracay Honey at DoubleShotCoffee.com

Simple Pleasures Simple Pleasures Fri, 29 Dec 2023 23:54:00 +0000 Each year, Mark and Brian convene for one last episode of AA Cafe in which they enumerate their "Ten Things." Every year is different, but they all come from the heart. This episode is all about simple pleasures. Think of your ten, they tell theirs. And if you want to see Brian's ten things he doesn't do, check that list out at DoubleShotCoffee.com. And while you're there, pick up a bag of Juan Ramon's cascara tea. Happy New Year.

18th & Boston - An Origin Story 18th & Boston - An Origin Story Tue, 22 Dec 2020 22:17:35 +0000 In March 2004, Brian opened DoubleShot Coffee Company in a strip mall at 18th & Boston in Tulsa, Oklahoma. People started coming in regularly and the business took on a place in life that no one expected. While Brian was focused on serving coffee exactly the way he thought it ought to be consumed, a group of folks rallied around the DoubleShot and created an experience that deeply affected almost everyone who stumbled in the door. Mark and Brian reflect on those early years and try to unfold what really happened. And this year, they list ten things that went missing in 2020.

Mark Brown 2.0 Mark Brown 2.0 Wed, 30 Sep 2020 23:58:23 +0000 This has been a weird experience. COVID has caused people to reevaluate their lives, what's important to them, and how they plan to spend the rest of theirs. It's made people question how they will provide for the basic necessities, how to cook rice, and who to follow on Instagram. This, my friends, feels like a deep dive into the troubled mind of Mark Brown. I think it's important to document how 2020 has changed us. And, as usual, Mark has an evocative way of expressing the thoughts of this updated version of himself. Follow him, if you will.

AA Cafe #93 - Nicaragua AA Cafe #93 - Nicaragua Fri, 22 May 2015 23:15:11 +0000 Earlier this month, I went to Nicaragua for the first time. It was a journey into the unknown, as I wasn't sure where I would be going or what I would find out when I got there. As it turned out, I learned a lot about the coffee culture there and experienced farms and mills at a few different levels. Listen as Mark Brown and I discuss the ins and outs of the trip. Some unexpected audio was caught on a farm in the lowland area of Chacraseca, when a local farmer told us, through an interpreter, about his life in farming and what he learned along the way. Pretty moving piece.

Music for this episode is by Lyndon Scarfe, Chenard Walcker, and FortyOne.

Watering the baby coffee plants at the nursery in Finca Santa Emilia.

A small farming family near the town of Santa Emilia. Maria Elena Ramos is the matriarch and they grow coffee on 1.5 manzanas of land.

Geronimo, a very small farmer who recently borrowed the funds from Just Hope foundation to make improvements on his house, which he is very proud of.

Our group hanging out on the farm of Freddy (far right, chatting with Luke Oppenheimer) in an area called La Flor.
