The post Why Sleep is the Most Important Form of Self-Care appeared first on Baby Mozart.
]]>Self-care. It’s kind of a hot topic right now. What started as a realization that we caregivers need to make time for ourselves to prevent burnout, has now exploded into a materialistic marketing campaign everywhere we look. Junk food, makeup, pedicures, bath bombs – treat yourself! #self-care
Baths and hot chocolates are certainly nice, and we should enjoy the things that we like on occasion, but as someone who has the privilege of working with and observing new mothers as my career, I would like to submit that we are kind of missing the point here when it comes to self-care.
Self-care isn’t about a little indulgence here and there, giving into a guilty pleasure like Oreos and Orange is the New Black. It’s about finding ourselves and taking back the very essence of who we are from the brink. It’s about reclaiming who we are as people, who can walk through this life feeling whole and have something left over to give. It’s about putting our oxygen mask on first, so that we can then turn to those depending on us.
And when you are a new mom, sleep is the very foundation that all forms of self-care rest upon. Without adequate sleep, our immune system is kicked down, making us susceptible to every little bug our kids bring home. Our metabolism shuts down and we stress over losing the rest of the baby weight. Our nervous system goes haywire and we are short, sharp, and irritable with our partner and children. We cannot move throughout our daily lives with patience and alertness, much less work out and eat healthy and meditate. Fix your sleep, and all the rest will follow – or at least become easier to manage.
New mom, protect your sleep. Guard it like a mama bear with two cubs in early April. Don’t let anyone interfere with it.
Easier said than done, you mutter, as you microwave your coffee – again – and jiggle that baby into quietness on your knee. You can do this though, and here is some help. These three tips on getting more sleep as a form of self-care will help you rebuild your foundation and set your whole family up for a healthier future. (And by the way, all of these tips are not just for you, but for your baby too!)
This is the most difficult step for new moms to follow, so I’m listing it first. After all, nighttime is our only me-time. Nobody is wiping snot on us or asking for snacks; we are free to binge watch Netflix, eat cereal, and scroll Facebook until “no more new posts”. Women need seven to nine hours of sleep each night just to maintain health, so if you’re going to be up feeding the baby a few times you better get started early. You can give up nightly Netflix for a few months to bring yourself back into balance. Your baby is better off with an early bedtime routine, too.
When it’s time for bed, it’s time for bed. Avoid watching television or looking at your smartphone for at least an hour before bedtime, and avoid eating late at night. Have a routine that you do each night: perhaps a hot bath, lavender lotion, and a white noise machine (or whatever works well for you). Clean up your bedroom, put up some blackout curtains, and cultivate a sleeping space that is quiet, dark, and set up for sleeping success. Train your mind and body to wind down for sleep around the same time each night. You should create a bedtime routine for your baby, too: even though they’re little, they’re very smart and they’ll start associating those actions with sleepy time before you know it.
We are all installed with a natural circadian rhythm. Unless you are a night shift worker or are severely sleep deprived, your body tells you to wake up in the morning and sleep at night. Light and dark influence our body’s production of two major hormones: cortisol, and melatonin. At night, in darkness, our bodies should produce more melatonin to make us sleepy. In the morning, in the daylight, our bodies should produce more cortisol to tell us to get up and get going.
Your baby needs help to establish a sleep rhythm in the newborn stage. Ensure both yourself and your baby differentiate night and day: sleep in a completely dark room at night, and only use one dim light for nighttime feedings. Avoid talking to or playing with your baby at night and during overnight feedings, and avoid artificial light in the evening. In the morning, you and your baby should sit in the sunlight for a while if possible.
Although these tips aren’t necessarily going to magically make your baby start sleeping eight hours at a time, what you are doing here is laying a foundation for their future health, your future health, and your very sanity. When you choose to protect your sleep, sacrificing me-time and nights out for Zzzs, you are choosing the truest form of self-care a new mom can.

]]>The post 5 Secrets to Get Your Child into an NYC Gifted and Talented Program appeared first on Baby Mozart.
]]>
As an NYC parent, you must have heard about the infamous Gifted and Talented Programs. Each year, the New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE) administers standardized testing to children pre-kindergarten through grade 2 to determine eligibility for G&T programs. The results of this test can have a profound impact on the resources and style of their future education.
Since the G&T programs are so competitive, the process of applying to the NYC G&T programs can be daunting. Luckily, there are ways to help parents fight for a spot.
In New York City, Gifted and Talented (G&T) programs are one way the city supports the educational needs of exceptional students. These specialized programs are designed in such a way that students are grouped together in a self-contained classroom and receive accelerated/more advanced instruction in all content areas.
Often times a gifted child in a regular class can face the risk of becoming bored or have trouble engaging socially. By placing these talented students in a setting surrounded by other gifted peers, they are encouraged to achieve a higher level of academic success.
Furthermore, children in G&T programs don’t typically feel the need to hide their giftedness to fit in; which leads to more confidence and self-esteem, and an easier time in making friends and socializing.
Studies have shown that over 99% of gifted students go on to complete a bachelor’s degree and 50 times more likely to receive doctoral degrees!
There are two types of G&T programs in NYC: District and Citywide
In order to be eligible for either program, students must take the G&T Test and must score a 90 or higher to get a G&T application. A student who scores 90 or higher can apply for District G&T programs, while a student who scores 97 or higher can apply for both District and Citywide G&T programs.
It is also important to note that G&T programs are in very high demand and there is NO GUARANTEE that a student will get a G&T offer, regardless of their test score. From 2017 admission data, 16,582 Kindergarten students took the G&T test, 4,467 scored over 90, but only 2,366 students were admitted to a G&T program.
Since admission to the programs is extremely competitive, thousands of NYC seek for alternative ways to maximize their child’s odds of getting admitted into the NYC G&T Programs.
On the NYCDOE website, you can find various Gifted and Talented Handbook for children born in different years. These handbooks provide parents with in-depth information on the G&T admission process, the G&T tests, admission priorities, as well as the specific timeline to apply for testing and school application. Make sure you choose the correct handbook for your child’s birth year and follow the exact steps and deadlines listed on the handbook as they could vary from year to year. Here’s a general guideline for applying to the G&T Programs:
The NYC G&T Test uses two standardized assessments to determine if a child is eligible to apply for a G&T program:
Many parents debate if they should prep their children for the gifted test. Is test prep consider as “gaming” the system? To answer these questions, parents must under two things:
For the NYC G&T Test scoring, it is important to know that the OLSAT and NNAT scores are not simply averaged together to give you a final score. For each test, the DPE considers your child’s age and the number of questions they answered correctly to determine and scaled score. This score is then converted to a percentile rank between 1 and 99. The percentile is a measure of how your child stands relative to his or her peers. For example, a percentile rank of 50 means y our child performed better than 50% of his or her peers. The two percentile ranks are then converted to an overall score using a Normal Curve Equivalent. In simple terms, your child is actually competing against all his or her peers in the same age range to get a spot for the G&T programs. And to get that competitive advantage, being well prepared for the gifted test is absolutely necessary.
Furthermore, young children have amazing abilities to learn. They learn through observation, repetition, constant trial and error, and reasoning and problem-solving. However, at such a young age, many preschoolers do not yet have the ability to translate their innate reasoning skills onto a standardized test that they are not familiar with.
In fact, research has shown that these standardized gifted and intelligence tests actually cannot reveal students’ true potential, rather, they simply measure how well students are able to take tests. From experience, simply because a child does not do well on these tests initially does not mean they do not have the thinking skills to solve the problems presented. This further proves that exposure and familiarity with test formats through play and practice would provide a huge advantage for your child.
In fact, even the NYCDOE itself provides sample test questions to help children prepare for the test.
There are many ways you could prep your child for the NYC G&T Test.
NYCDOE Gifted and Talented Programs Handbook
You could start with the NYCDOE Gifted Program handbook. At the very end of the handbook, there are free sample NNAT and OLSAT tests. These tests give both the parents and the students an idea of what the tests are like, the difficulty of the questions, and instructions on how to take the tests.

Test Prep Material
To further enrich your children’s ability to score high on the gifted tests, many parents choose to purchase additional gifted test prep material. There are lots of resources out there, however, one of the greatest resources that I have come across and highly recommend for NYC parents is Puzzles for Young Children: Preparing Little Ones for Gifted and Talented Tests & Private School Admission by Michael Wallach and El Otmani Ali from Central Park Tutors.
This 237-page book is neatly divided into 10 forms of reasoning that commonly appear on gifted and intelligence tests.
As a parent for 2 preschoolers myself, I really like how this book is formatted more like a children activity book than a typical workbook. There are 90 brain puzzles presented in this book, all are beautifully designed and inspired by the styles of more than 50 of the greatest artists of the twentieth century, from Picasso to Klee, Mondrian to Matisse.
\
Furthermore, instead of having many questions on one page, this book presents only one brain puzzle per page. One of the typical problems I have when doing worksheets with my preschoolers is that their attention would jump from one question to the next when they are all presented on the same page. By having only one question per page, it is extremely helpful in keeping my children engaged and focused on solving that question.
Not only are the questions in the book fun and challenging, they are extremely similar to the questions your little one would see on the actual NYC G&T Test. So while you are working through these game-like brain puzzles with your child, your child is gaining not only the reasoning ability behind the puzzles but also the proper way to apply that same reasoning ability to a standardized test.
And unlike traditional test prep books where you need to flip back and forth to get to the answer key and explanation, this book provides detailed hints and explanation to parents right beside the question itself to help parents and students navigate through the questions.
Honestly, compared to many gifted test prep books available out there, Puzzles for Young Children definitely stands out as one of the top resources for the NYC G&T prep. Their questions are age-appropriate, high quality, and my sons definitely love doing these puzzles as they are more like games than work. And since their questions are designed based on numerous common kindergarten admission tests, the knowledge and skills your child could gain from this book could be applied to private school testing in NYC as well.
Puzzles for Young Children is currently available on Amazon for $13.38.
Private tutoring
There are many private tutoring companies in NYC that provide G&T test prep. The rates of such tutoring programs range from $30 an hour to $200 an hour, depending on location and quality. Usually, 10 sessions are required. These tutoring programs are great for busy parents who don’t have time to work through test prep material with their children, or for those would like professional tutors involvement.
Using a variety of everyday vocabulary to describe the position of items in space, looking for patterns, discussing quantitative concepts like more and less and less, and imagining what an object would look like if it were turned upside-down or sideways are some activities that may help children prepare for the kind of thinking required to do well on the gifted tests. Parents are also encouraged to spend 30-60 minutes a day reading with their children to improve their vocabulary and verbal abilities.
Make sure your child gets a good night of sleep and eats a nutritious meal before taking the test. You can also lessen anxiety by helping to ease your child’s mind about the test. Encourage them to do their best and remind them that they are not expected to know the answer to every question.
It is the policy of NYCDOE to provide equal educational opportunities without regard to actual or perceived race, color, religion, age, creed, ethnicity, national origin, alienage, citizenship status, disability, weight, and gender or sexual orientation.
If English is not your child’s first language, you can choose the test language preference on the Request For Testing form. Besides English, your child may take the test in Arabic, Bengali, French, Cantonese, Mandarin, Haitian-Creole, Korean, Russian, Spanish, or Urdu.
If your child has disabilities, you can request for the appropriate testing accommodations as well.
And lastly, it is important to know that G&T programs give an admission priority to students with siblings currently enrolled in those programs. So if your child applies to a G&T program at a school that their sibling attends, they have greater priority to attend that program than applicants without siblings at that school.
The NYC Gifted and Talented Programs are extremely competitive. With the tips above, you can boost and maximize your child’s chance of getting into one. Good luck with everything and please share with us your experience and tips with the NYC G&T process.

]]>The post Baby’s Nutritional Needs – Month by Month Baby Feeding Guide (0-12+ Months) appeared first on Baby Mozart.
]]>
Babies grow quickly in the first year of life, so they need plenty of energy and nutrients. A child’s growth isn’t always steady and even, which means that appetite and hunger can be unpredictable. The amounts of foods eaten by your baby and their interest in food may be a little different from day to day. This is normal and shouldn’t cause any concerns if your baby is growing well.
In this article, we will provide you with a month-to-month feeding guide for all your baby’s nutritional needs, including:
Breastfeeding is recommended exclusively during the first 6 months of baby’s life, and continued for up to 2 years of age and beyond. Along with being a special bonding moment, breastfeeding has many nutritional benefits:
Expressing breast milk is an option once you’re comfortable with breastfeeding. Having some breast milk stored allows you to share feeding times with a partner or caregiver.
At this age, if your baby is hungry, he/she will show the following hunger signs:
If your baby is full, he/she will show the following fullness signs:
As your baby’s stomach is tiny, so small, frequent feedings are best (8-12 per day or every 1-3 hours). As baby gets bigger, the number of feedings may decrease to between 4 and 6 per day.
In the first 2 months, a baby will have roughly 3-4 soiled diapers and 6 wet diapers per day. Diaper patterns vary from baby to baby. Keeping a diary will help you track what is normal for your baby.
At 6-8 months, your baby might show the following developmental milestones:
At this age, if your baby is hungry, he/she will show the following hunger signs:
If your baby is full, he/she will show the following fullness signs:
At about 6 months, your baby has used most of the iron he/she received from you (mom). Health Canada recommends introducing solids at this age. Baby’s first foods should be rich in iron. Try meats, meat alternatives, baby cereals that are iron-fortified, etc.
At 6-8 months, you should work towards offering nutritious complementary foods in 2-3 feedings, and 1-2 snacks each day. Pay close attention to your little one’s hunger cues.
As your baby starts to explore new foods, you can progress from sing-ingredient purees to richer tastes and different textures. It can take up to 10 tries with a new food for your baby to give it a go. Don’t give up!
Starting solid foods can change the color and texture of baby’s stools. It can also change how often baby has bowel movements. If stools are soft and easy to pass, there is no need for concern.
Early morning: Breast milk
Breakfast: 1-2 tbsp iron-fortified baby cereal, 1-2 tbsp pureed fruit (i.e. peaches or pears)
Morning snack: Breast milk
Lunch: Breast milk, 1-4 tbsp pureed meat, 1-4 tbsp pureed vegetables
Afternoon snack: Breast milk
Dinner: Breast milk, 1-2 tbsp pureed vegetables, 1-2 tbsp of iron-fortified baby cereal, 1-2 tbsp pureed fruit
Bedtime: Breast milk
At 8-12 months, your baby might show the following developmental milestones:
At this age, if your baby is hungry, he/she will show the following hunger signs:
If your baby is full, he/she will show the following fullness signs:
At 8-12 months, you want to start introducing more textures and varieties of solids to your baby to build on flavor and variety. Foods can now be chopped, minced, and/or grated rather than purred. Finger foods are fun and important to encourage self-feeding as well.
Homogenized (3.25%) cow’s milk can now be introduced, once your baby is eating a variety of iron-rich foods such as iron-fortified baby cereal, meats, and meat alternatives.
At this point, your baby should be eating 3 main meals a day with 1-2 snacks each day depending on your baby’s appetite. In addition, 2-4 feedings of breast milk / homogenized milk should be included.
Babies who eat a variety of food will pass stools that vary in color and consistency. New foods such as fruits and vegetables may result in softer stools of different colors. For example, a baby who eats green vegetables may pass green stools.
Early morning: Breast milk
Breakfast: 2-4 tbsp of iron-fortified, multi-grain baby cereal, 2-4 tbsp of mashed or soft bite-sized pieces of fruits (i.e. unsweetened applesauce or chopped strawberries)
Morning snack: 2-4 tbsp of blueberries cut in half, 1-2 tbsp of grated cheese, 2-4 tbsp of unsweetened puffed cereal
Lunch: Breast milk, 2-3 tbsp of chopped chicken, 3-4 tbsp of green peas (cooked soft and mashed), 1/4 – 1/2 slice of whole grain bread (cut into strips)
Afternoon snack: 2-3 tbsp of hard-boiled egg (chopped), 2-4 tbsp of iron-fortified multi-grain baby cereal
Dinner: Breast milk, 2-3 tbsp of salmon or char (deboned, cooked, and flaked), 1-4 tbsp of steamed brown rice, 3-4 tbsp mashed sweet potatoes, 2-4 tbsp of canned peaches (chopped)
Bedtime: Breast milk
At 12+ months, your toddler might show the following developmental milestones:
At this age, if your toddler is hungry, he/she will show the following hunger signs:
If your toddler is full, he/she will show the following fullness signs:
At this point, your baby should be eating 3 main meals a day plus 2 snacks of solid foods, as well as 2-3 cups of breast milk or whole cow’s milk.
While toddlers thrive on routine, your little one’s appetite will vary. Provide a sense of structure with regular meal times and familiar utensils, but listen to their hunger and fullness cues. Keep things fun by continuing to introduce new foods.
Breakfast: 4-6 tbsp of iron-fortified, multi-grain toddler cereal, 1/3 medium banana (sliced), breast milk or 1 cup of homogenized (3.25% M.F.) cow’s milk
Morning snack: 1/2 slice whole-grain toast (cut into strips), smooth nut butter (thinly spread on toast)
Lunch: 1 egg (scrambled), 3-4 tbsp of red and green peppers (cut into strips), 2-3 pieces of whole-grain tortilla (cut into strips), hummus spread on tortilla
Afternoon snack: 2-4 tbsp of yogurt or cottage cheese, 2-4 tbsp of cantaloupe or honeydew melon
Dinner: 2-3 tbsp of salmon or char (deboned, cooked, and flaked), 1-4 tbsp of steamed brown rice, 3-4 tbsp mashed sweet potatoes, 2-4 tbsp of canned peaches (chopped)
Bedtime: Breast milk or 1 cup of homogenized #3.25 M. F.) cow’s milk

]]>The post It’s Confirmed: Babies In The Womb Love Mozart (More Than Mickey Mouse and You) appeared first on Baby Mozart.

Have you ever heard of the term “Mozart Effect”? It is a popular theory that “listening to Mozart makes babies smarter”. Although much research has gone into studying the benefits of brain development when playing Mozart music for babies, study results have been conflicting and controversial. While some researchers found it to be real, other dismissed it and argued that even if it has benefits, they are short-term benefits only and have no effects on long-term brain development.
Despite the unproven benefits, I, like many mommies-to-be, spent countless nights during my last pregnancy playing Mozart to my baby bump. Determined to give my baby the best start possible, I also played Bach, Beethoven, Pachelbel, Tchaikovsky, Liszt… and many more classical composers. In my spare moments, I even talked and sang to my unborn baby, hoping to do some pre-birth bonding.
Recently, I found out that my effort has not gone to waste!
In a research from the Institut Marquès where they studied the relationship between unborn babies and exposure to music, results showed that babies-in-womb do respond to music by moving their mouth and sticking out their tongue, as if they are singing along, demonstration increased brain activities.
The study exposed 300 fetuses 18 to 38 weeks’ gestation to 15 different songs in 3 music genres: classical, traditional, and pop-rock, and also to 2 types of voices: human and Mickey Mouse. The fetuses were monitored via ultrasound scans to capture their reactions. The results were stunning!
Normally, only 3 to 5% of fetuses demonstrate mouth movements and tongue protrusion during second and third trimmest of pregnancy without a specific stimulus. The study found that when exposed to classical music, 84% of fetuses moved their mouth, and 35% stuck out their tongue, the most reaction observed amongst the 3 music genres
More surprisingly, the study also found that the type of classical music played does indeed make a difference.
Amongst the different classical composers (Mozart, Bach, Prokofiev, Strauss, and Beethoven), babies seem to like Mozart the best. With a high score of 91% of babies responded with mouth movements and 73% with tongue protrusion, Mozart has secured the top place for best classical music to play to unborn babies.

And for those of you who love to talk and sing to your baby bump like me, the study found out that babies actually don’t like human voice as much as you think. Looking at mouth movements, only 76% of the fetuses responded to Mickey Mouse voice, while 60% responded to human voice (both lower than the 84% scored by classical music). And if we look at tongue protrusion, the result is even more surprising. Only 17% of the fetuses stuck out their tongue when Mickey Mouse voice was played, and none of them responded to the human voice.
So yes, it’s confirmed, the Mozart Effect is real! Babies love Mozart, and the study lead by Institut Marquès demonstrates the importance of early neurological stimulation, which can activate brain areas related to language and communication.
To be honest, I was kind of saddened by the fact that my unborn baby probably loves Mozart and Mickey Mouse more than my voice. However, as stated by Dr. López-Teijón, the director of Institut Marquès, “Music is a form of ancestral communication between humans, the communication through sounds, gestures and dances preceded the spoken language.”, the importance of playing music, especially classical music, to an unborn baby cannot be ignored.

As a mommy blogger, social media marketer, and an ebook writer, one of the biggest challenges I have with my writing is grammar. Sometimes, I have great ideas on what to write, but I find myself wondering something as basic as whether or not a sentence needs another comma or semi-colon. Luckily, I found Grammarly.
Although Microsoft Word and many other word processing software has a built-in spell check and grammar check function; however, these spell checkers can only detect if words are spelled correctly, not if they are used correctly. For example, the following sentence would have passed the ordinary spell checker in MS word.
“The ordinary spell check will not fine words witch are miss used but spelled rite.”
A couple of months ago, I decided to give Grammarly a try to see if it would help me with my writing. At first, I was quite skeptical, as Grammarly is a free browser extension. After all, how good can something FREE be?
After using Grammarly for a couple of blog posts, I’ve concluded that EVERY blogger needs Grammarly.
Grammarly is a free browser extension that will proofread any writing you do online, whether it is via your blog or a social media platform like Facebook, Twitter, etc. Not only will it let you know when there are spelling and grammar mistakes, it even makes suggestions for you on how you might fix it. Grammarly will make sure your messages, documents, and social media posts are clear, mistake-free, and impactful.
Yes, Grammarly is absolutely free, that’s how amazing it is. The free version of Grammarly checks for 150 common grammatical mistakes, including spelling. Things that it checks for include subject-verb agreement, tenses, and it even makes sure you use the correct version of a word that has multiple spellings.
Grammarly is super simple to use. Simple install the extension into your browser and start writing. It will underline potential mistakes in red and a red circle appears to let you know how many potential mistakes there are in your current document. By clicking on each individual red line, another box will pop up and give you suggestions on how to correct your mistakes. If you think you are correct and Grammarly is wrong, simply hit the “ignore button”
Now, as a blogger, I think the free version of Grammarly is more than enough. However, as I venture into being an ebook writer which is a lot more grammar-focused and writing intensive, there is a premium version of Grammarly I could use for $11.66 per month. Here’s what the premium version offers. I definitely recommend it if you are a student, an eBook writer, or in any profession that involves a lot of heavy writing. It’s totally worth it.
For all my fellow bloggers out there who haven’t installed Grammarly, really, give it a try! If English writing is not your greatest strength, Grammarly can help a great deal and make your blog posts and online writing 110% better. If you are already amazing at English writing, this tool will help you be even better. And what’s best? It’s absolutely free.

]]>The post How to Create the Perfect Backyard for an Autistic Child appeared first on Baby Mozart.
]]>
If you have an autistic child, then you know very well how difficult it can be to manage characteristics such as flapping hands, repeating phrases or babble, heightened sensitivity (or sensory aversion), obsessive interests, social isolation, and loss of language skills, but you’re not alone. Approximately one in 68 U.S. kids has Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), a number that continues to grow rapidly each year. While there’s no wonder pill to treat autism, setting a home environment, such as the backyard, with activities that stimulate their senses can be a great accompaniment to any treatment given by a doctor or therapist. Here’s how to make the most of the great outdoors.
Autistic children have challenged motor skills, but they can improve them in the same way as typically developing kids do — by moving. One of the best ways to incorporate a variety of motor skills at once is by setting up an obstacle course that involves walking, running, jumping, climbing, ball skills, bending, and animal walks, among countless others. From a development and attention span standpoint, get creative and regularly mix things up. For example, turn a typical course into an action, a treasure hunt, or a spy experience. Bring out some of their favorite stuffed animals and make them imitate their noises at each station. Incorporate fun elements such as balloons, a DIY cavaletti, a ball of yarn, and sidewalk chalk.
Many medical professionals believe that water therapy can increase the effectiveness of an all-encompassing treatment program. Even if you don’t have a big swimming pool, purchase a smaller model (larger than your average kiddie pool) to get your child used to water. Along with helping kids to become better swimmers, aquatic therapy can help strengthen muscles, which, in turn, improves balance and range of motion. You need not be overly social to enjoy being in the water, thus making it a safe space to practice social skills without any pressure. Motor skills can get a boost if activities such as tossing a ball around are incorporated into the experience. Many kids with ASD have sensory integration issues, so water can have a calming effect.
Numerous studies point out the positive effects of being in a garden for children with development issues such as ASD, so consider planting a sensory garden in your backyard. It’s important that the green space targets all five senses — think planting roses that permeate the air with a delightful aroma, exploring taste with edible herbs, adding the addition of a water fountain for audible pleasure, and using a variety of colorful shrubs and flowers for visual appeal. Be sure to choose an area that’s calming and relaxing for your child so that they get the most out of the experience. Along with incorporating touchable foliage, let your child get involved hands-on by helping you with the gardening experience. Before starting, ensure you have all the proper equipment, including gardening gloves if you get into anything messy.
While there’s nothing wrong with visiting the local playground to help develop your child’s social skills, a backyard setup is an easy way for him/her to work on gross motor skills on the daily — weather permitting, of course. There are some things to keep in mind so that your child gets the most out of the experience. For example, incorporate natural elements such as a sandbox, sprinkler, and loose building material so they can make their own structure. Provide play structures that double as a hiding place since kids with ASD sometimes need a “safe” place.
Solo play isn’t the only way to entertain your child. Make playtime a family affair by a variety of activities you can do together such as bird watching and backyard camping. Ask your kid for feedback on things they would like to do so they feel included.
Although making your backyard safe and enjoyable for an autistic child might take some work, it’s important for them to have a space to explore and have fun. Just make sure you take the proper precautions to ensure everyone has a great time.
