High school sports scores from Wednesday:

Girls Soccer:
–Butler defeated North Hills 1-0. Lucia Leyland scored the only goal of the game as the Golden Tornado opened section play with a win. They are now 2-1-1 (1-0).
–Seneca Valley also opened section play with a 2-0 victory over Pine-Richland. Izzy Yuhouse and Cece Wildrick scored for the Raiders, who improved to 3-0-2 overall.
–Mars and Knoch battled to a 0-0 draw, but both squads remain unbeaten.

Boys Soccer:
–Jake Olkawski scored the only goal in North Catholic’s 1-0 win over Armstrong. The Trojans improved to 3-0.

Boys Golf:
–Mars defeated North Allegheny 191-200.
–Freeport downed Knoch 186-226.

Girls Golf:
–North Allegheny-164 Butler-218.
–North Catholic-174 Shady Side Academy-187.

Girls Volleyball:
–Moniteau-3 Brockway-0.

The NFL season opened last night with the Seattle Seahawks defeating the New England Patriots 13-10. The Seahawks scored the game’s final 13 points in the second half, after the Patriots had built a 10-0 lead into the third quarter. Seattle picked off New England quarterback Drake Maye three times in the game, but the Seahawks also lost their starting quarterback Sam Darnold to a hip injury during the game. Drew Lock replaced him and threw for 187 yards and a score.

New England also lost star wide receiver A.J. Brown to an ankle injury in the third quarter.

Another NFL game will be played tonight in Melbourne, Australia, when the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers meet in an International game. Kick-off is 8:35pm. The game will be televised on Netflix.

There is also a Thursday night college football game tonight when the #7-ranked Miami Hurricanes host Florida A&M. Miami is a 57-1/2 point favorite.

The #2-ranked Pitt women’s volleyball defeated #17-ranked Tennessee 3-0 last night, by set scores of 25-17, 28-26 and 25-20 in the Shriners Children’s Hospital Showdown at the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex in Orlando, Florida. Senior Olivia Babcock led Pitt (7-0) with 17 kills.

The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Chicago White Sox 9-3 last night in their opening game of a three-game series. The Bucs took an early lead with a five-run first inning by sending 10 batters to the plate and starting pitcher Bubba Chandler retired the first 12 White Sox batters.

Chandler improved to 7-9 by going six full innings. He allowed two runs on four hits, did not walk a batter and struck out eight.

The Bucs had 18 hits in the game, led by three hits each from Oneil Cruz and Rafael Flores, Jr. Spencer Horwitz drove in three runs. Konnor Griffin led the game off with a double and had his first hits since returning from the injured list.

The Bucs visit the White Sox again tonight at 7:40pm. WISR pre-game begins at 7:15pm. Lake Bachar will open the game tonight for the Pirates.

Ryan O’Hearn began a rehab assignment last night with Triple-A Indianapolis. He had a double in three at-bats and played seven innings at first base. He could return to the Pirates this weekend against the Cubs.

The Slippery Rock University football team has jumped five spots to #13 this week in the latest American Football Coaches Association weekly poll. The Rock will visit East Stroudsburg this Saturday night. IUP is #14 this week followed by Minnesota Duluth, who Slippery Rock beat in double overtime in their season opener. East Stroudsburg is among teams receiving votes in the poll.

The Rock will visit the Warriors of East Stroudsburg this Saturday night. Kick-off is 6:35pm. Hear the game on The Rock Station 97.7 and on the Rock Football Audio Network beginning with the Coach Shawn Lutz Show at 6pm.

The Pittsburgh Pirates open a six-game road trip to Chicago tonight, with the first of three games with the White Sox. First pitch is 7:40pm. WISR pre-game begins at 7:15pm.

Bubba Chandler will start for the Pirates. He is 6-9 this season with a 4.30 ERA.

The Pirates begin the night 71-73 overall with 18 games remaining in their season.

Sean Burke will start for the first-place White Sox. He is 8-6 with a 3.20 ERA. Chicago is 75-68 overall this season and are three games up on Cleveland in the American League Central.

The Pirates took two of three games from the Los Angeles Angels over the holiday weekend. They won a pair of 1-0 games Friday and Sunday. The Bucs lost 6-1 Saturday to the Angels. They visit the Cubs for three games beginning Friday. Their final homestand, which is nine games long, will begin a week from today.

The Pittsburgh Steelers open their regular season this Sunday at Acrisure Stadium when they host the Atlanta Falcons. Kick-off is 1pm.

On Monday, the Falcons announced former Miami quarterback Tua Tagavailoa will be their starter this weekend. The Falcons are under the direction of former Cleveland head coach Kevin Stefanski, who is in his first year with Atlanta.

Former Penn State running back Matt Suhey has passed away at the age of 68. Suhey played 10 seasons with the Chicago Bears after being a second-round selection in the 1980 NFL draft. He was part of the Bears Super Bowl winning team in 1985. That was the team that went 15-1 in the regular season, then beat New England 46-10 in the Super Bowl.

Suhey was born in Bellefonte, Pa. He rushed for over 2,800 yards at Penn State and 26 touchdowns. He was named First-Team All-East twice in his collegiate career.

Christopher Bell passed Kyle Larson with 18 laps to go and held on to win the “Chase” opening Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway in South Carolina Sunday night. Ty Gibbs, Bell’s Joe Gibbs Racing teammate, finished second, and Tyler Reddick, a five-time winner this season, was third. Chase playoff drivers accounted for nine of the top 10.

Next up this Sunday – is racing at the World Wide Technology track in Madison, Illinois – just minutes from downtown St. Louis, Missouri. Hear coverage on WBUT beginning at 2pm.
