In an interview with Deutsche Welle, Andreas Mehler, Director of the Arnold Bergstraesser Institute (ABI), reflects on the ongoing debate over Germany’s colonial past and the responsibilities that come with acknowledging historical atrocities. A central issue is the demand for the German Bundestag to formally recognise the genocide committed against the Ovaherero and Nama in what is now Namibia. In the early twentieth century, German colonial forces waged a war of extermination against the Ovaherero, Nama, Damara and San. Shark Island, where the German colonial administration operated a concentration camp, remains a stark reminder of the violence and brutality of colonial rule.

Mehler takes a critical view of the proposed reconciliation agreement between Germany and Namibia, which the two governments have been negotiating since 2021. The agreement envisages 1.1 billion EUR in reconstruction and development assistance over 30 years, but has yet to be signed. Mehler describes the German government’s approach as a form of “checkbook diplomacy”, warning against an approach that places financial commitments at the centre of reconciliation without adequately addressing demands for recognition and reparations.

Mehler also highlights the challenges surrounding the restitution of colonial-era cultural artefacts and human remains. Beyond the return of objects and remains, he stresses the importance of a broader engagement with colonial history in public spaces. He hopes that a constructive debate on memorial sites will emerge and that many more places will actively engage with Germany’s colonial past.

Read the full article on the Deutsche Welle website (German).

News Type:

Contributions in Media

Mon, 19 Oct 2026 12:50:08 +0000 jl 132869 at https://www.arnold-bergstraesser.de Neue IQAS Ausgabe: Youth Movements against Authoritarianism in Asia, Part II https://www.arnold-bergstraesser.de/news/neue-iqas-ausgabe-youth-movements-against-authoritarianism-asia-part-ii New IQAS Issue: Youth Movements against Authoritarianism in Asia, Part II
13.10.2026
jl <time datetime="2026-08-24T14:45:31+02:00" title="Monday, 24. The issue is a product of an author's workshop carried out as part of the project. In total, 24 participants attended, including contributors from 10 Asian countries.

Asia is home to approximately one billion youth aged 10 to 24 years – 60% of the world's young people. In recent years, the frequency with which students and the youth have been at the forefront of political and social movements across Asia has captured the world’s attention. Movements such as the pan-Asian "Milk Tea Alliance", the pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong, and the 2024 student and youth uprising in Bangladesh and Nepal signal a new wave of youth activism which reshape the political landscape across Asia.

By drawing on diverse disciplinary approaches and case studies, the collection of articles in this issue traces the evolving nature of these youth mobilizations and develops a nuanced understanding of resistance from below. Taken together, they demonstrate that youth movements are neither ephemeral moments of generational dissent nor isolated national phenomena. Rather, they are politically consequential and increasingly interconnected forms of collective action that challenge entrenched structures of power while reimagining alternative political futures.

Find the new issue here (Open Access).

Selected articles

Cartographies of Dissent: Youth Activist Spaces and Transnational Solidarity Navigating Authoritarianism in East Asia
Oscar Truong
(Re)Imagining Resistance: Study Circles, Reading and the Politics of Belonging on a University Campus in India
Vidyasagar Sharma

IQAS (International Quarterly for Asian Studies) has been Germany's leading academic journal on Asia since 1970. Zanker has been an active member of the Network’s Board for the past four years, serving as its Equality Officer, and now takes on a new leadership role as Speaker.

The German Network for Forced Migration Studies is a multidisciplinary network of researchers working on forced migration, refuge and asylum. Its aim is to strengthen Forced Migration and Refugee Studies, foster academic exchange and collaboration, and promote dialogue between academia and practice. The Network also supports the transfer of research findings to the wider public and advances the public and practical relevance of research in the field.

The new Board builds on important recent outputs. Former Speaker Christiane Fröhlich highlights the development of the Ethics Guidelines for Forced Migration Studies in a participatory process involving network members and people with lived experience of displacement, as well as the establishment of mobility grants for scholars from the Global South to further internationalise the biannual conferences. Most recently, the board created the position of an Accountability Advisor, who advises the network on how to make their work more inclusive and diverse, including the conferences. Together, these initiatives have contributed to a more inclusive, reflective research community.

The conference programme also featured several events with contributions from ABI researchers. Among them were the panel “Exploring Refugee Agency, Resistance and Negotiation in South-South Forced Migration Contexts”, chaired by Edwin Mutyenyoka and Sophia Stille, and a roundtable on “Rethinking Solidarities, refugee resistance and agency from the south”, chaired by Jamila Hamidu and Laura Lambert, with Edwin Mutyenyoka and Franzisca Zanker as two of the speakers. Franzisca also co-chaired a workshop on “Ethics in Refugee Research: Reflexivity, Responsibility, Solidarity, and Power”. Finally, Anas Ansar chaired a double panel on “Rohingya Refugees and the Onward Migration in Asia”.

News Type:

Contributions in Media

Mon, 05 Oct 2026 14:33:05 +0000 jl 132860 at https://www.arnold-bergstraesser.de New ABI Working Paper: What is the political agency of migrants? https://www.arnold-bergstraesser.de/en/news/new-abi-working-paper-what-political-agency-migrants New ABI Working Paper: What is the political agency of migrants?
30.09.2026
ct <time datetime="2026-10-01T12:20:42+02:00" title="Thursday, 1. Towards a non-Eurocentric framework of understanding

By Franzisca Zanker

This paper develops a relational, non-Eurocentric conceptualisation of political migrant agency. It argues for a balance-of-stories approach to understanding political agency by considering historically contextualised empirical and everyday experiences of the migrant actors. Connecting this to previous scholarship on migrant agency, the paper unpacks what is political and who is the migrant. It argues that migrants act within heterogeneous, intersectional collectives and that the political emerges not only in formal arenas but also in everyday practices that migrants themselves interpret as meaningful for transformative purposes. Political agency is an intersectional experience that should be self-defined according to (aspirational) transformational intent. Drawing on Afrotheoretical perspectives and relational methods, the paper challenges normative assumptions about political subjectivity and contributes conceptual clarity to the undertheorised field of migrant agency beyond the Global North.

Find the Working Paper here (Download PDF):

Download

ABI Working Paper N°29 (365.68 KB)
| © Franzisca Zanker | ABI

You can find all ABI Working Papers on our website.

News Type:

General News

ABI Working Paper

(Forced) Migration

PolMig

Thu, 01 Oct 2026 10:20:42 +0000 ct 132853 at https://www.arnold-bergstraesser.de
