Chess – Europe or Asia?

Charles Crawford — Wed, 01 Feb 2023 12:34:49 +0000

One of the existential themes in Russian thinking is that Russia is both European and Asian simultaneously. Given Russia’s vast geography, such thinking is not surprising or even wrong. It’s hard not to visit St Petersburg and be impressed by its European grandeur. I have not recently visited Khasan on […]

Ukraine v Russia (Continued)

Charles Crawford — Wed, 01 Feb 2023 11:57:48 +0000

I haven’t been here for a while. Yet the world slouches on. The Ukraine war is set to regather intensity as the winter cold ends. Western weapons pour in. Russian conscripts line up to be blown to bits. Shares in Poland are rising as Germany’s reputation as Europe’s natural leader […]

Ukraine v Russia: Negotiating with a Bully

Charles Crawford — Sun, 25 Sep 2022 12:15:06 +0000

China and India boldly … call for a negotiated end to the war in Ukraine! Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called on Russia and Ukraine to “keep the crisis from spilling over” and from affecting developing countries. “China supports all efforts conducive to the peaceful resolution of the Ukraine crisis. […]

Ukraine v Russia: Going Nuclear?

Charles Crawford — Thu, 22 Sep 2022 15:40:41 +0000

Vladimir Putin’s disastrous, incompetent, stupid, not-good invasion of Ukraine is proving to be disastrous, incompetent, stupid, not-good and many more. So what to do? Make things worse! Here’s the Kremlin website version of his latest speech announcing mass mobilisations to build a larger army and making all sorts of threats […]

Cheating at Chess

Charles Crawford — Thu, 22 Sep 2022 13:17:58 +0000

The normally placid backwaters of the chess world are foaming with controversy! Why is world champion Magnus Carlsen refusing to play young US chess player Hans Niemann, while dropping ill-disguised hints or insinuations that Nieman has been cheating? Boo! See eg here: England’s leading female player, Jovanka Houska, accused Carlsen […]

HM The Queen

Charles Crawford — Wed, 21 Sep 2022 14:14:15 +0000

It’s hard to say which was the most painful moment of the Funeral of HM The Queen. The TV images during the day were exquisitely done – almost every shot a startling combination of colours and unexpected focus. But for me the small extended procession along a quiet country road […]

Mikhail Gorbachev – Communist Witchcraft?

Charles Crawford — Thu, 01 Sep 2022 13:55:44 +0000

Mikhail Gorbachev has died. Plenty of glowing tributes to him in the Western media. Russians up to and including V Putin may be rather less forthcoming. Here’s a nice account of his various visits to the UK over the years. Gulp. It’s now nearly 40 YEARS since 1985 when Mikhail […]

Ukraine v Russia: Now What?

Charles Crawford — Tue, 30 Aug 2022 15:38:14 +0000

Ukraine v Russia drags on. Ukraine saw off Moscow’s attempts to take Kyiv and is now pushing back hard against Russian positions in eastern Ukraine, notably the Kherson area. Western weapons are hitting Russian targets hard, although Russian weapons are doing plenty of damage on Ukrainian targets. It’s hard for […]

Is Intelligence Overrated?

Charles Crawford — Mon, 25 Jul 2022 13:11:26 +0000

Is intelligence overrated? This strange subject gets loads of Google hits. I was drawn in its general direction by this WSJ piece, linked by venerable Arts & Letters Daily. The article looks at a new book If Nietzsche were a Narwal by Justin Greggs who’s an expert in psychology and animals: […]

That Boring War in Ukraine: Who’s to Blame?

Charles Crawford — Mon, 25 Jul 2022 11:44:01 +0000

My latest piece at DIPLOMAT magazine is all about European insecurity: Very broadly speaking, throughout the Cold War years the ‘West’ and the USSR dealt with each other within a policy framework nicknamed MAD: Mutually Assured Destruction. The risk of mutual annihilation if a nuclear weapons exchange broke out was […]
