OneBeat Borneo Alumni Rami Syahbandi and his collective, Sonikustik created the Vst and standalone plugin of Pontianak Melayu percussion ensemble. This VST consists of 7 traditional Melayu percussion instruments consisting of Beduk, Rebana, Tar, Kompang, Gendang Panjang, Beruas, and Gong/Tawak. This VST presents sound sampling from the playing of a maestro of traditional Melayu music from Pontianak, West Kalimantan, Indonesia named Anwar Jaafar.

Barbara Majnaric and Joanna Maria Skowrońska’s project “Ojkanje-here and now”

“Ojkanje here and now” aims to document and collect vocal forms with elements of ojkanje in the regions where it is a living tradition (Bukovica and Ravni kotari, Lika, hinterland of central and southern Dalmatia). The project consists of archival-research, field and documentation work, and is designed as an open online archive of singers and singing styles in the mentioned regions of the Republic of Croatia. Orzenje, orcanje, grotalica, rozgalica, vojkavica, treskavica are some of the local names for a two-part vocal form that contains the technique of voice shaking, and which was protected by the Republic of Croatia in 2010 under UNESCO with the group name – ojkanje. Found Sound Nation presents in collaboration with splice this sample pack of Malagasy traditional instruments including amponga lahy and tany (drums traditional found in the central lands of Madagascar), katsa (coastal rattle) and valiha (highlands zither played by the Merina people) by multi-instrumentalist Tsanta Randri. Swung and harmonized plucked melodies from the valiha contrast metallic triplet rhythms from the katsa and ringing percussion tones from the amponga drums. Recorded at his home studio in Antananarivo and on tour in Antsirabe, this pack is a rare glimpse into Madagascar’s distinctive harmonic and rhythmic sensibilities. Global Voices interviewed OneBeat 11 Alumni Tsendsuren Enkhtur, a Mongolian musician of the string instrument called a “khuuchir.” Tsendsuren Enkhtur is a virtuoso khuuchir (a Mongolian traditional instrument) player based in Ulaanbaatar. Raised in a musical family, she began learning khuuchir at age 12, studying at the State Conservatory of Mongolia and continuing her masters degree at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. OneBeat 2016 Alumni Wu Siou Ming created a virtual synthesizer that uses a sensor to convert air-quality readings into sound. Ming shared: “The function of this device is to understand the air quality at the moment by listening. Detect air quality through the sensor and import the parameters into the program, set up the sound synthesizer, and let the synthesizer express the quality of the current air through sound. The synthesizer defines clean air as the standard tone in music (440hz), and the parameters generated in different air pollution states create different levels of noise for amplitude modulation, affecting the sound to create unstable waveforms and generate ripples, giving the sound a feeling of jitter.

OneBeat is accepting applications for two month-long U.S.-based music exchanges scheduled for the spring and fall of 2024. OneBeat 13 (April-May) & OneBeat 14 (September-October) will bring 50 total musicians (ages 19-35) from select countries to collaboratively write, produce and perform original music, and develop strategies for arts-based social engagement. Each session begins with a residency followed by a tour. OneBeat Fellows will perform for a wide array of American audiences, collaborate with local musicians, and lead workshops with youth.
