The other top-ranking apps for August include health and fitness app Fitbit, AT&T’s DirecTV media app, Hewlett-Packard’s HP ePrint productivity app, and Eastman Kodak’s Kiosk Connect. These apps are at the top of the heap in a market that is expected to drive more than $61 billion in revenue this year and grow at a compound annual growth rate of 52 percent over the next five years, App Annie said.

Chromecast uses a $35 dongle to connect a mobile device to a TV, allowing users to stream high-definition pictures and videos to a TV from a mobile device or web browser.

App Annie said that the top-five ranking health and fitness apps grew 2.3 times in monthly downloads in August 2014, compared to August 2013. The top five media apps accounted for 40 percent of all downloads in August. That makes sense, because smart TVs are media devices. But the connected device market goes beyond TVs and includes refrigerators and cars.

Market researcher Gartner forecasts that 26 billion connected devices will be online by 2020. The top six major categories for mobile apps on connected devices are Health & Fitness, Media, Productivity, Car, Home, and Watch.

App Annie looked at 30 top apps this year. It found that 27 of those apps were available last year and that they grew in aggregate downloads more than 50 percent. By comparison, all apps outside of games grew 2 percent in the U.S.

After media, productivity was the second-largest subcategory, with about 30 percent of downloads and four apps in the top 10. Health and fitness was third, followed by the car, home, and watch categories.

GoPro, the maker of mobile sports cameras, ranked high in the media subcategory for its adventure media channels. Gaming apps from the PlayStation and Xbox consoles also did well, particularly those that let users record and share their gameplay via livestreams. For instance, the Xbox One Smartglass app allows a player to use a smartphone to deploy special weapons in an Xbox One console game.

Steep learning curve: You need to put some good hours into this game before you can use all the touch controls, effortlessly.

Bottom Line

But unlike 2011’s efforts, which focused on 3D photography and gaming, companies’ new-wave 3D vision ranges from gestures and navigation to a 3D interface effect. Google has Project Tango, Microsoft has apparently inherited Nokia’s “McLaren” R&D, and even Amazon seems to be getting in on the act with rumors of a 3D smartphone.

Although there haven’t been any device announcements yet, Amazon’s June 18 event is right around the corner, followed by Google’s annual I/O developer conference a week after that on June 25, so prep your peepers for some extra dimension.

3D navigation and controls

According to rumors, Microsoft is working on a “3D” Windows phone that lets you control the device the way you would Microsoft’s Kinect gaming system for Xbox. But don’t start envisioning yourself choreographing elaborate gestures to dial up pizza delivery just yet. At this point, it’s probably better to think of the new technology as a navigational aid that taps into physical motions when your fingers aren’t touching the screen, and uses your hovering finger when they are.

For example, sensors around the phone might recognize that you’re laying down while you read, and temporarily lock the screen orientation so your contents don’t accidentally flip around. Sliding your finger along the phone’s spine might zoom in and out, according to The Verge, though it’s also easy to see how context-awareness could also let your walking digits scroll the page up and down in the browser, and raise or lower the volume when you’re on a call. Flipping the phone over or pocketing it could disconnect a call, and a deliberate wave of the hand over the screen could shelve notifications.

The project is said to contain an interface element as well, which is being called MixView. Hovering your finger over a live tile on the Start screen could cause it to pop up other options that you could select without physically tapping the tile; for instance, pulling up headline stories or a contact’s phone number or email address. Since these scenarios require more complex hardware and software to work, the first phone, allegedly code-named McLaren, has to have all the right sensors, presumably multiple cameras for tracking, as well as a depth sensor — just like the Microsoft Kinect. Although Nokia had reportedly been working on McLaren for years before Microsoft picked it up, the company’s experience with Kinect’s gestural gameplay fits in well.

Now, smartphone-makers have worked with gestures for years, and most current smartphones include some sort of motion awareness that can respond when you shake it or flip it over or raise it to your head. Samsung has gone a step further in some flagship phones and tablets by letting you hover your finger (or stylus) over, say, tiny thumbnails and drop-down menus to pop open larger previews.

Loads of options: Behind a clean face and busy but efficient toolbar, Notepad++ is a wonder of features and options. One favorite: Default Directory has two choices, Follow current document and Remember last directory. Another: The “old, obsolete” desktop icon is a setup option.

Options to load: We could set Notepad++ not to use %APPDATA% but rather to load or write config files from the installation directory; this is handy when running Notepad++ from a USB device.

Plug-ins, too: Notepad++ comes loaded with useful plug-ins plus a Plug-in Manager. But we could also select a startup option to load plug-ins from AppData — a potential security issue that Notepad++ only recommends for experienced users.

Cons

None, really: There’s nothing we tried that we didn’t like.

If you just want a better text editor to replace Notepad, try Notepad++. If you want a powerful, versatile code editor, try Notepad++. In any role, it excels.

With the exception of a few nonessential hardware and software additions — like the fingerprint scanner and novel heart-rate monitor — and a few design tweaks, you’re pretty much looking at the same phone Samsung released in 2013. The S5 is more of a Galaxy S4 Plus than it is a slam-the-brakes, next-generation device; it makes everything just a little smoother and faster.

The 5.1-inch, quad-core Android 4.4 KitKat machine with a terrific 16-megapixel camera is well worth snapping up, both on-contract for about $200, or off-contract for about $650 (and about £570 in the UK and €700). However, it isn’t the only phone worth your time. The gorgeous, all-metal HTC One M8 has a more sophisticated design, better speakers, and greater internal storage for about the same price (32GB versus 16GB). Should you buy the GS5? If you want to go to sleep at night certain that you own the most capable, robust phone, yes.

Samsung does boasts about a new display panel and accompanying technology that help the phone adapt its display more accurately to different lighting scenarios. This is one of those small improvements that few will notice so long as it’s working.

External controls are where you expect them on a Samsung phone: power is on the right, the headset jack is up top, next to the IR blaster that’s made its triumphant return to control your TV with Samsung’s matching app. On the back, the new heart rate monitor cleverly integrates with the camera’s LED flash.

What is a little different is the USB housing on the bottom of the phone. Like the Galaxy Note 3, the S5 now features the elongated USB 3.0 port, which is backward-compatible with standard micro-USB cables. In other words, you can still charge the phone with legacy USB cables, but it’ll really juice up quickly with the compound USB 3.0 cable Samsung supplies.

These rumored details seem to fit in with what Motorola has hinted at with the Moto 360. Sapphire is often used in watches and is a premium material that would set the Moto 360 apart from other devices. The app comes loaded with the dreaded Airpush, which will pop ads all over your browser. Once you’re in the app, it features a very boring menu to help you travel to each game. The games all have the menus you’re used to, though. The game’s sound effects and music sound exactly like they would on the console. You control your plumber with onscreen buttons on the left and right edges of the screen. This forces you to hold your smartphone just like an NES controller, which is a nice touch. However, the transparent buttons blend into the game’s scenery a lot, which makes them a pain to press. There are some added goodies to Super Mario Bros. 1-3 like a screenshot tool and the ability to save and load a new game. Sadly, some of the secrets you’d find in the game–like kicking bricks in Super Mario 3 to grab mushrooms and feathers–are hit or miss. Those are the only things in these ports that don’t feel like the original games.

If your tablet has replaced your DS, these games are a great download to add to your collection. Super Mario Bros. 1-3 is good enough to make even pro gamers think they’re the real deal.

MoboMarket is an interesting third-party Android app marketplace with plenty of apps you won’t find on Google Play. It does require you to double-check before downloading, as there are lots of duplicates of Google’s Play Store offerings and several questionable apps that seem to do more harm than good. Still, if you dislike Google Play, this is a good app to have handy.

In addition to letting you choose new apps, you can download extra themes and wallpapers from this marketplace. It isn’t hosted by Google Play, so you’ll need a third-party installer to make it work. It seems like this marketplace exists to host apps that wouldn’t be approved by Google, so there are some adult apps to be found here, too. There are plenty of familiar faces that top the Google Play charts, as well, but some of them aren’t real apps. Make sure you double-check permissions and fine print before you install anything from MoboMarket. To try to make things easier, the app offers verified reviews that can help weed out scams. In addition, we have to give this marketplace a thumbs up for sporting a very comfortable layout, which makes downloading apps remarkably easy.

Though MoboMarket might turn some people off, many people are desperate for an app marketplace that isn’t related to Google. No matter what your reasons for shying away from the Play store, MoboMarket fills the hole quite well. It’s a great way to download some of the most popular apps as well as a few you won’t find on Google Play.

“Apple has tried to mischaracterize these patents so they are the iPhone,” Price said during closing arguments in a court here. But “these patents are very narrow…Apple doesn’t own beautiful and sexy.”

He added that while Samsung knew it needed to alter its devices to compete with the iPhone,Apple has done the same thing with new devices like the iPad Mini.

“There’s nothing wrong with looking at your competitors and changing what you do because of it,” Price said.

And people seek out Samsung’s devices because of Android, bigger screens, and other features, not because of Apple’s patented technology, he said.

“Did you hear any evidence that anyone bought any of these phones because of the Apple patents?” Price asked. “What they’re really saying in the market is ‘justice’ is ‘just us.”

Meanwhile, Apple attorney Bill Lee argued that Samsung’s patent infringement significantly harmed the company and that the electronics giant deserves an additional $380 million for that damage. He noted that Samsung’s copycat tactics helped it gain significant market share while other rivals struggled. And he said the patent infringement set back Apple.

“Apple can never get back to where it should have been in 2010,” Lee said Tuesday during his closing arguments.

A jury last year determined Samsung had infringed on five patents related to the iPhone’s design and functionality. A judge earlier this year vacated about $450 million of the original award and ordered a new jury to convene to recalculate the damages for patent infringement. Samsung is still on the hook for about $600 million, but Apple is asking for $380 million more. Samsung believes it only owes Apple $52 million.

Samsung sold 10.7 million infringing devices, generating $3.5 billion in revenue.

Price and Lee made the comments during a retrial in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California. A new jury of eight people — six women and two men — has been assembled to determine the new damages total for Samsung’s patent infringement.

The retrial kicked off last Tuesday with jury selection, followed by opening arguments Wednesday. Witnesses who took the stand included Phil Schiller, Apple’s head of marketing, and several expert witnesses who calculated the total damages owed.

For most, the damages retrial was a case of “Groundhog Day.” No new revelations emerged during the testimony, and most witnesses also took the stand during the last trial more than a year ago. Apple’s witnesses argued Samsung’s copycat devices hurt the company, while Samsung argued that people seek out its devices more for their differences than similarities to Apple gadgets.

Not at issue in this case is whether Samsung infringed Apple’s patents. The judge instructed the jury that a previous jury already decided Samsung infringed, and that they shouldn’t revisit that issue. The sole consideration in the retrial is money — just how much Samsung owes Apple for infringing its patents.

Apple paid $345 million for the Israel-based company, according to a Calcalist financial newspaper report on Sunday that didn’t cite sources. Perhaps best known for powering the gesture control used by Microsoft’s Xbox 360 game console, the company’s technology is also used in 3D scanners, iRobot’s Ava, and the Asus Xtion.

CNET has contacted Apple for comment and will update this report when we learn more. PrimeSense declined to comment on the report.

“We are focused on building a prosperous company while bringing 3D sensing and natural interaction to the mass market in a variety of markets such as interactive living room and mobile devices,” a spokeswoman for PrimeSense told Reuters. “We do not comment on what any of our partners, customers or potential customers are doing and we do not relate to rumors or recycled rumors.”

PrimeSense has raised $85 million from Israeli and US venture capital funds such as Canaan Partners Global, Gemini Israel, and Genesis Partners, according to Calcalist.

Apple was said to be talks to acquire the 3D-sensing company since July when it was said to beoffering $280 million for the Tel Aviv-based company. Apple has found Israel to be a veritable treasure trove: last year, the company confirmed that it acquired Israel-based flash storage maker Anobit for $400 million.
