Unfortunately, The County – owner of the Bridge – closed it off to even pedestrian traffic a while back.
There is a local effort – led by 3 area non-profits; the Chatham Dirt Road Coalition, the Columbia Land Conservancy, and the Chatham Area Recreation Project- to rehabilitate the deck to again allow pedestrian, bike, & horse traffic. They also plan to work with the Hudson River Greenway to create a pedestrian trail from the Village of Chatham to the Albany Hudson Electric Trail in North Chatham; mostly over dirt roads including Spengler and the bridge.

Vermont has saved several smaller bridges at designated bridge storage depot sites. Sadly in neighboring New Hampshire there is little suport for saving them. The Shelburne, NH “Meadow Bridge” was removed and left in a field where it sits today.
