There was a 2019 recall on all Gen 1 2007-2015 Audi R8 vehicles due to the coolant expansion tank failing, resulting in engine compartment fires. The coolant tank is located directly above the exhaust manifold and when the tank fails, coolant is dumped on the exhaust manifold. Because modern coolant is highly combustible at high temperatures, it instantly causes a fire in the engine compartment. The recall resolution is to install a metal tension band around the coolant expansion tank to reduce the severity of the failure by minimizing the rate at which coolant escapes when the tank ruptures at the seam. With the metal band in place, only a small amount of coolant “steams” out, resulting in the rear glass fogging up, but eliminating the chance of an engine fire. The recall does not, however, solve the underlying problem causing the tank to fail in the first place. The tanks will continue to fail every few years.

Cause of Coolant Expansion Tank Failure

The coolant expansion tank fails because the coolant being sent to the tank is too hot, exceeding temperatures of well over 150 degrees C. This exceeds the thermal fatigue temperature of the expansion tank, meaning that it will progressively weaken with each over-temperature event. Over time, these over-temperature events will cause the tank to fail at the plastic welded seam around the  perimeter of the tank. The metal band doesn’t prevent this failure from occurring; it only minimizes the severity of the failure when it does.

Resolution of the Problem

To completely address the underlying problem, it is necessary to lower the temperature of the coolant sent to the overflow tank. This prevents the expansion tank from becoming too hot and failing. This temperature reduction is accomplished by moving the expansion tank feed point from before the radiators (where coolant temperature is highest) to after the radiators (where coolant temperature is lowest.) This is accomplished by connecting the coolant expansion tank pick-up line to the coolant fill vent point at the outlets of the front center radiator. The original pickup points (before the two side radiators) are then converted to coolant fill vent ports. When performing a coolant fill after the conversion, the coolant is vented at two points (near where the coolant enters each of the side radiators), rather than at one central point (immediately after the front center radiator.) The coolant expansion tank should be replaced with a new tank when this rerouting is performed because the old tank has likely experienced multiple over-temperature conditions and is partially fatigued.

Parts Needed:

  1. Disconnect angled Dark Blue Angled Vent Tube 17 from Dark Red Connector 16 (shown in diagram below)
    • Save this hose – it will be reused in Step 2
    • Leave this port on Connector 16 disconnected for now. It will be reconnected in Step 3.
  2. (Updated Version) Remove unnecessary hoses and fitting; block-off the open connection
    • Disconnect Yellow Hose 22 at both ends and remove. This hose will not be needed.
    • Disconnect Small Purple 90 degree hose circled in green at both ends and remove. This hose will not be needed.
    • Disconnect the Green Y-connector that was at the right end of Yellow Hose 22 and remove. The Y-connector will not be needed.
    • Connect the red hose directly to the purple metal line labeled #54. Removing the battery makes reaching the small hose clamp much easier. You can cut the last bend out of the red hose to make it a cleaner install. link
    • Install Dark Blue Angled Vent Tube 17 (removed in step 1) to the small connector of Orange Fitting 11 (where Yellow Hose 22 attached to Fitting 11.)
      • Note: Position the Angled Vent Tubes so it lays down and the cowl trim covers them. You can also cut out that first 180 degree bend. Then just attach the remaining 90 degree part with the vent attached. No need for all those bends in the new spot.
    •  and install the Straight Connector (part number ###-###-###) so that Red Hose 23 connects directly to Purple Hose 54
  3. Re-Route Inlet Flow for Red Hose 23.
    • Disconnect the right end of Red Hose 23 from Pink Fitting 6
    • Install the additional Angled Vent Tube 17 (part number 420-121-060-A) to the small connector of Pink Fitting 6
    • Connect the right end of Red Hose 23 to the small connector of Dark Red Connector 16 (this is the port that was left open in Step 1)

Replacing the Coolant Expansion Tank:

Now that the hot coolant flow to the expansion tank supply has been eliminated, the coolant expansion tank should be replaced with a new tank that has not experienced any thermal fatigue. The mental band should still be installed on the replacement tank as a precautionary measure.

Part Numbers:

  • Tank Option 1: Original Audi R8 coolant tank: 420-121-403
  • Tank Option 2: Audi Q7 Part Number: 7L0-121-407-F (completely identical to the R8 tank but it costs substantially less)
  • Tank Option 3: Mahle/Behr CRT86000S (most likely Mahle/Behr is the original supplier to Audi, and this is likely the least expensive option for an identical part)
  • Expansion Tank Tensioning Strap: 420-121-263 (can reuse strap from old tank – if available)
  • Tensioning Strap Bolt: N-010-287-12 (can reuse bolt from old tank – if available)

Make sure you install the metal band around the seam of the new coolant expansion tank. Transfer it from the old tank or order the parts. Better safe than sorry!

  5. Work Accomplishment: My work highlight of the year was getting broader industry adoption of the Open Telematics Framework that I formulated and have been working on since 2019 and being selected to present the details for the Software-Defined Vehicle group at EclipseCon 2023.

I’ve owned Garmin watches since about 2007. I thought I’d like the app flexibility of the Apple Watch, but really missed the deep fitness focus and battery life of the Garmin.
  • The BedJet individual cooling/heating system to help improve my sleep. The quick review is that I’m sleeping much better in the summer due to being cooler, and somewhat better in the winter due to being at a more consistent temperature. Unlike the SleepEight water circulation pad I was considering, the BedJet is a fan, so I don’t have to worry about it leaking water and I don’t have to pay a ridiculous subscription fee.

Intro

I love the Audi R8. I think everything possible should be done to preserve these cars and prevent early examples from potentially experiencing a preventable failure. When I purchased an R8 manufactured in January 2010, I assumed it had the reinforcement plates installed at the factory due to misinformation floating around. I decided to inspect the front frame area after I had owned the car for a few months. It did not have the reinforcement plates. So I then went through the process of figuring out how to get my car retrofitted, mostly for my piece of mind, and was able to get the retrofit completed at no cost to me.

After reading stories from a few owners who purchased cars with front frame cracks, I decided to thoroughly document the inspection and retrofit process for the benefit of others. This should be part of any pre-purchase inspection for 2006-2010 Gen 1 R8, and I think all owners of early Gen 1 R8s should consider this retrofit as a preventative measure.

Background Details on Audi R8 Frame Cracking and Reinforcement Plates:

There is an issue with front suspension mount frame cracking with the early Gen 1 Audi R8. This affects all vehicles model years 2007, 2008, 2009, and almost every 2010. It can affects both V8 and V10 vehicle, manual and automatic R-tronic transmission vehicles, and coupe/spyder/convertible vehicles.

There are numerous misconceptions and incorrect details floating around, so let’s review the facts:

  • This is not an extremely common problem. There were approximately 13,500 Audi R8s manufactured between MY2006 and the end of MY2010. The guestimate is that this failure has happened well less than 100 cars, which is well less than a 1% failure rate. However, this number will likely continue to rise over time as more vehicles accumulate more miles.
  • Frame cracks do not only occur on vehicles that were in a collision or were abused. Multiple vehicles with frame cracks show no sign of front collision, wheel damage, or other suspension components. A severe front wheel collision will definitely cause immediate failure. But it can also be triggered by normal driving conditions (hard-hitting multiple pot holes and/or speed bumps over time.) The frame cracks occur because the front suspension frame is cast from a relatively low grade aluminum and the entire force from the front shock absorber is concentrated in a small area. The cracks occur from a combination of brittle fracture (high impact force, like hitting a pothole) and fatigue failure (repetitive normal suspension forces over time.)
  • The 23-Nov-2009 switch-over date is for the frame manufacturing date stamped on the rear frame near the transmission, not the final vehicle manufacturing date on the door sticker. May 2010 is the likely “all clear” vehicle manufacturing date when all cars were manufactured with plates installed.
    • Audi R8 frame manufacturing date location - right rear support brace. Audi R8 frame manufacturing date.
    • 23-November-2009 is the frame manufacturing date for the change. Audi released an internal memo summarizing the change to start adding reinforcement plates. However, this frame date only is different from the vehicle manufacturing date shown on the door sticker.
    • The frame date uses the Euro format: Day-Month-Year (not month-day-year like in the US.)
    • Reinforcement plates can not be assumed to be installed on all cars until a vehicle manufacturing date around May 2010.
    • Some, but not all, March/April 2010 builds did receive the reinforcements. It’s been verified by owners on R8talk.com that vehicle manufacturing dates as late as April 2010 did not have the plates installed, which is near the end of the production run for model year 2010.
    • To summarize, almost all 2010 Audi R8s did not have the plates installed at the factory and you can’t tell definitively by the vehicle manufacturing date, because that date does not match the frame manufacturing date.
  • Installing the retrofit reinforcement plates on R8s with no existing frame cracking is not difficult or expensive, but a very experienced welder is mandatory. The plates themselves are only $40 each and fit in the palm of your hand. A every experienced welder who know how to TIG weld aluminum is required, because the “pot metal” front suspension frame a low-quality aluminum that is very difficult to weld. The majority of the work is removing the front wheels, front suspension, and windshield wiper assembly. Audi recommends also removing the dashboard to make sure nothing in the passenger compartment (on the inside side of the firewall) gets overheated from the welding or catches fire, but people have welded the plates without removing the dash and had no issues.
  • You should do a Preventative Retrofit instead of waiting for a failure. Full frame realignment is required if the joint completely separates, and cost can be in the $30,000 range, vs. $4,000 for a preventative retrofit. Details are below.
  • The reinforcement plates do solve the issue and prevent frame cracking. There have been no reported suspension frame cracks in any Audi R8 with the reinforcement plates installed (manufactured in or after May 2010.)

  • Epoxy-bonding the reinforcement plates to the frame is not as strong as welding them and there is no proof that epoxy bonding will prevent cracking. While a bonded plate is better than no reinforcement at all, it is not gong to be as strong as a welded joint. This joint was not designed for bonding adhesives. Bonded joints have to be specifically designed with forged or cast aluminum end components that have the torque moment connections designed into the connection itself. Then, at some distance away from the connection, a linear plane joint can be made with adhesives. The R8 joint in question was not designed in any way close to being suitable for a bonded joint. This joint was designed to be welded. The retrofit plates would need substantially greater rigidity, length, surface area, and manufacturing tolerances to have any chance of providing significant strength to this joint. Metal-to-metal epoxy bonding is very tricky as the forces are spread on all the surface and the epoxy thickness is critical, especially for shear forces. Also, bonding aluminum is very difficult as a thin oxide layer can prevent a proper metal contact.
  • Audi has never officially acknowledge the problem. However, unofficially, multiple Audi techs who have gone through the R8 certification process have stated that they were told of the problem and how to inspect for it. Audi reportedly even had a cracked frame on display at a regional training center. This issue does not meet the guidelines for a NHTSA recall.

How to Inspect for Frame Cracks

  • Remove the the plastic liners surrounding the front trunk:
  • Put a support under the front hood to hold it in place when the struts are removed
  • Left Panel Removal:
    • Remove left hood support strut
    • Remove left plastic trim panel
    • Temporarily reinstall left hood support strut
  • Right Trim Panel Removal:
    • Remove Right hood support strut
    • Remove Right plastic trim panel
    • Temporarily reinstall right hood support strut
  • Top Trim Panel Removal:
    • Mark location of windshield wipers on front window using masking tape
    • Remove wiper arms
    • Remove top plastic trim panel
  • Inspect the areas where the suspension mount towers meet the lateral cross brace
    • The right side will be easy to inspect; there is no obstruction
    • It is advised that the wiper motor assembly be removed to have full visual access to the left side suspension mount tower.
    • Please note that the joints are covered in seam sealer. If the metal is cracked, the cracks will likely propagate through the seam sealer as well, but this is not guaranteed.

Details of the Retrofit/Repair Process, Cost Estimates, and How to Request Good Will Policy Coverage from Audi North America

It’s much better to have the brackets proactively installed, versus waiting until frame cracks are already present. If the cracks propagate completely through the frame member, there will be complete separation between, resulting in bending and structural misalignment that will be drastically more difficult to repair.

Step 1: Do NOT contact your local Audi Dealer. They know nothing of this problem and everyone will become more confused. There is no official documentation on this issue available to a dealer, and the retrofit procedures are not published in a system that is available to the dealer. The parts and procedures are only available to Audi Certified Collision Centers.

Step 2: Be patient. This is not going to be a standard process for anyone involved. It could take 3 months from beginning to end.

Step 3: Contact Your Nearest Audi Authorized Collision Center. Call the collision and ask to speak to their most senior repair coordinator/advisor and give them all the details of what is in this document. Schedule a visit to the shop and talk to the repair coordinator. They will want some time to do some research on the issue. They will need to contact their Regional Training Organization (through Audi North America) to get the necessary details. Their regional (or national) collision trainer will likely be the best source of information. They will probably want to bring in the car and do an initial inspection to see if there is any existing cracking before creating the quote. I had to take it in twice total. The first time, they inspected the suspension mount area and took a lot of pictures; I had my car back a few hours later. About a month later, after Audi provided retrofit details and the parts were in, I took it in for the repair. That cost about $3400 and took about 1.5 weeks total. I’ve seen quotes as low as $2600 USD and as high as $8000 USD. The cost for my retrofit was $3400 USD and the breakdown for the retrofit is as follows:

Step 4: Send your request for Good Will Policy support to Audi Cars North America, knowing there is no guarantee of reimbursement. I waited until after my repair was completed before contacting Audi, but you can contact them if you have only a quote from an Authorized Audi Collision Center. Start at case by e-mailing AudiTalk@audi.com using the form letter below. It may take 3-4 several weeks to hear back from Audi North America (which was after the repair was already completed, and I’d already paid.) If you’re lucky, you’ll receive a call telling you that Audi will cover it. The call will be from Audi of America: +1 (800) 822-2834. If you’re very lucky, Audi will make a special approval of your request. Here’s the e-mail I sent to get the process started:

Dear Audi:

I’m the owner of a 20XX Audi R8 with the VIN of XXXXXXX. Unfortunately, my chassis was not equipped with the front suspension reinforcement braces that were added to all R8 chassis a few months after mine was produced.

I realize that there is no official recall issued by Audi to retrofit the reinforcement plates. However, it gives me a fair bit of anxiety when driving my R8 knowing that I could hit something on the road and potentially total my car due to a frame failure. I’ve therefore scheduled to have the reinforcement plates retrofitted by the local Audi Certified Collision Center (Name of Collision Center, address of collision center, phone number of collision center. I was wondering if Audi North America would consider assisting with the cost of this retrofit. I realize that the frame reinforcement retrofit is not an official recall. But I also realize that it was subsequently identified as a design weakness in the frame that was quickly corrected in production. I know that aluminum is much more prone to high-cycle fatigue vs. steel, so it does concern me that the likelihood of failure will increase as miles and time accumulates on my car.

Please let me know if Audi North America would consider assisting with the cost of frame reinforcement retrofit on my 20XX R8.

Step 5: If Audi Takes Care of You, Be a Loyal Audi Customer and Spread the Word. If Audi covers the cost of the retrofit/repair under goodwill/policy, be a loyal Audi customer for life. If they don’t, don’t be angry, because you are not entitled to reimbursement. This issue, after all, does not meet the standards of a NHTSA recall. The fact that Audi would even consider reimbursement 10+ years after production is remarkable. There are no guarantees and it’s better to have the frame retrofitted than it is to worry about it potentially failing.

Doing the Retrofit Yourself

I recommend having an Audi-certified shop do this work following the Audi-provided procedure. This could help with the future value of the car. However, dealing with the unofficial Audi process can be very cumbersome and it can be easier to just take your car to an expert who knows how to do the repair. User @TriniTT on R8Talk.com has offered to coordinate the repairs for anyone in the US who is interested and has a solid reputation, and the cost will likely be lower than at an Audi Collision Center.

If you want to do the repair yourself, the reinforcement plates are available through Audi Dealer Parts Departments. However, they can be procured from seller VWdirect on ebay.co.uk or from @R8stuff on R8Talk.com. The part numbers are 427805883 and 427805884 and cost is only about $50 USD for both. The parts are stamped Al-Mg-Si, which indicates a much higher grade of metal than the casting on which they are welded. (Please note, if you want to receive policy support from Audi, you will probably need to use an official Audi Collision Center.)

If the welder doing the retrofit is not experienced, they can overheat the Audi Space Frame and weaken the factory welds, causing more damage. Make sure the welder is an aluminum specialist. There is quite a bit of diligence required for the material preparation and making sure the weld area is clean bare metal; this is far more important for aluminum than for steel. But if done correctly, then the welds will not affect the integrity of the surrounding material. Basically, issues can arise if the welder tries to run a continuous bead without controlling the material temperature.

There is an official Audi procedure, but it is only shared with Audi Collision Centers if/when Audi reviews/approves the repair. Audi has coordinated the retrofit for customers and provided documentation on how to do the work, but not to third parties. People have successfully conducted this repair by removing only the front wheels, suspension, and wiper assembly and have left the interior dash in place. This substantially reduces the cost and effort, but proceed with caution if taking this approach.

I first read about “line array” speaker designs around 2010 and have been fascinated by them ever since. As the name suggests, Line Array speakers consist of an array of identical speaker drivers placed directly beside each other in a long line. Because each speaker driver is so close to the one next to it, the result is constructive/reinforcing interference between the outputs of the speaker drivers. For a traditional vertical speaker configuration, this causes the sound to be more focused vertically (i.e. focused directly in front of the speaker and not toward the floor/ceiling) and more broadly and evenly distributed horizontally (across the audience).

If you’ve ever been to a concert, you’ve likely seen line array speakers above and beside the stage.

As with all designs, there are of course downsides to line array speakers. Mainly the downsides are that the cabinets are very large and the speakers are very expensive (due to numerous speaker drivers and the complexity of the speaker cabinet.) It’s also difficult to transport these speakers, as each one can be over 7 feet (2.1 m) tall and weigh 250 pounds (110 kilograms) or more.

Inspiration: The Life’s Work of Ken Fritz

What recently re-sparked my interest in Line Array Speakers was an incredibly thoughtful video documenting Ken Fritz 20 year build of “The World Best Stereo System”, while also reflecting on his life and family. I haven’t heard the system myself, but I have to believe that this line array speaker system has to be everything that it is claimed to be. People who have heard Ken’s system agree. Ken’s son did a fantastic job of documenting the audio system as well as his father as a person.

I have no ambitions to build anything that that would rival Ken’s system. But I would love to build a set of 3 line array speakers and place them behind an acoustically transparent movie screen in the front of my next home theater. My hope is that they would at least be in the same vein as Ken’s system, and deliver incredible sound on a different scale.

LS9 Line Array Speaker Design Plans and Background

Since Ken’s speakers are arguable the “the best speakers in the world“, I’m jokingly calling this alternative line array design “the second best speaker design in the world.” I don’t have the time and expertise to create my own speaker design, so I’m re-sharing an existing acclaimed design.

The line array speakers that I plan to build are based on the GR Research LS9, originally designed by Danny Richie at GR Research and licensed to AV123 for manufacturing and distribution back in the mid-2000s. There were numerous avid audiophiles who tried to purchase these speakers from AV123. Some actually received their speakers…but most did not. AV123 eventually imploded (as documented on AVSforum in excruciating detail.) AngleCityAudio later started selling the LS9 for $18,500/speaker, but it’s not clear if they still are.

LS9 Line Array Speaker Build Plans

Luckily, there is still a DIY option to build these LS9 speakers yourself. The speaker cabinet plans are available below in PDF form and GR Research still sells the driver kit (it is not listed on their website – you have to call them.) The cost of the speaker drivers and crossover is about $2,600 per speaker. Each speaker cabinet requires about 6 sheets of plywood / particle board (I think HDF High Density Fiberboard would be the best option.) If you have the woodworking equipment, the cheapest option would be to cut all of the pieces yourself. Otherwise, you may be able to find a local cabinet maker with CNC equipment to make the pieces for you to separately assemble. (FYI, here’s a link to a related old DIY build thread on AVSforum.)

The LS6 is a smaller version of the LS9. I don’t have build plans for the LS6. The cost for the drivers for this kit is about $2000 from GR Research. (If you’re going to go through all the trouble to build speakers like this, my thought is to not bother with the smaller LS6 and go for the LS9 instead.)

While there is some overlap between a home you live in and a home you rent to strangers, there is quite a bit that will be different. Here’s my list of the best smart home products for the guests in a Vacation Rental Property. Some of these items are on the more expensive side, but I think the higher reliability justifies the higher investment – you need the technology to work without you being in there to fix it.

TV and Entertainment:

Guests like to watch shows and movies when on vacation. It can be one of the highlights for certain types of vacations. And they want to watch THEIR shows, not somebody else’s. And you definitely don’t want guests messing up the favorites and watch history in your accounts. Roku is the best solution because Roku has Guest Mode that allows owners to switch to a mode where guests sign in to apps – and can schedule an automatic sign-out date. Roku supports every major streaming service. The newer, higher-ed Roku devices support both Google Chromecast and Apple Airplay. But you can’t solve everything with Roku, so you’ll probably need a combination of multiple solutions:
Roku Enable Guest Mode

  • Recommended TV (if you need a new one) – TCL with Roku: The best TV for a rental is big and inexpensive. If there’s room, go for at least a 65-inch TV. (Note: TCL TVs currently do not support Apple Airplay 2. Maybe they will at some point, but not as of 2021. If you want Airplay 2 capability, you’ll need to go with an external Roku Ultra…)
  • Streaming Device for Existing TV: Roku Ultra LT or Roku Ultra. As mentioned above, Roku has Guest Mode that allows owners to switch to a mode where guests sign in apps – and schedule an automatic sign-out date. Also, Roku supports every major streaming service. The reason to get the Roku Ultra or Ultra LT? Wired Ethernet. Don’t leave it to the guests to connect / reconnect to the Wi-Fi. Put it on wired Ethernet and you won’t have to worry about connectivity. (If you’re a Channels DVR user, there is no Channels DVR app for Roku due to Roku hardware being too slow…but now that Rokus are much faster, perhaps Channels will re-start development on their Roku app.)
    • Program the Roku so that the remote fully controls the TV power, HDMI input, and volume via HDMI-CEC
  • Labeled HDMI Cables for BYOD (Bring Your Own Device): Aside from Google Chromecast/Apple Airplay, the easiest solution for guest is for them to bring their own stream device. You should make plugging in the device as easy as possible by having two 6-foot long HDMI cables labeled with the corresponding HDMI Input name.
  • Essential Fallback Cable/Satellite Service – Dish Network Hopper DVR: Some people, especially those who are older, still love traditional cable/satellite providers. The grid guide is essential. I think the best option is to use satellite, because I’ve experienced several cable Internet outages at rentals in the past. At least the satellite TV will be there if the internet connection goes out.
    • Program the remote to fully control the TV, including input selection, power, and volume
  • Universal Remote: Don’t mess with a universal remote. Make sure the Roku is setup for HDMI-CEC (control of the TV over HDMI) and make sure your TV works with HDMI-CEC (~2017 or newer TVs.) Also, make sure the fallback cable/satellite remote is programmed to control the TV. Then hide the TV remote. Guests should only have to use the Roku remote to turn on the TV to Roku or the cable/sat remote to turn on to that input. If the TV doesn’t support this capability, you have the wrong TV.
    • For switching to the BYOD external HDMI cable inputs – leave printed instruction on how to press the hard buttons on the TV inputs manually.

Guest Access Code Management Cloud

The best door access code management system I’ve encountered is Lynx. Lynx integrates without over 20 different booking partners, including VRBO and Airbnb. It automatically generates unique door access codes for each visitor for their scheduled dates. It works with Yale, Schlage, August, Kwikset and several other brands of locks. It also integrates with both Nest and Ecobee thermostats.

Wi-Fi and Networking:

Having a strong internet connection is important for a vacation property, especially if it’s in a location that doesn’t have the best cellular coverage. The coverage needs to be strong throughout the house, not just in one room. Kids will be streaming shows to their phones at one end of the house, parents will be checking in on work from their laptops on the other end. If there’s a large outside entertainment/pool area, there should be coverage there as well.

  • Pick for Best Wi-Fi System: Eero 6 Router 3-pack. The Eero 6 product line gives plenty of speed and coverage for pretty much all situations (no need to pay for the much more expensive Eero 6 Pro.) I recommend getting the three-pack of Eero 6 Routers instead of 1 router and 2 extenders because the routers have wired network ports. Why is this important? Because you really should connect the 3 routers together using wired Ethernet cable instead of relying on wireless connections between the devices. If you need help running the cables, call the local security system installer or CEDIA smart home pro and get them to help. (Otherwise, get the Eero 6 Router + 2 extender 3-pack.) Be sure to share to create a Guest Network instead sharing your main network with guests.
    • Note: I’ve had to go into the admin interface on numerous routers at rental properties because they were not setup properly. They are hard to set up. I’m looking at you TP-Link. Eero is much easier to setup correctly and it’s also pretty resistant to guests getting Admin access and messing something up.
  • Best Way to Share Wi-Fi Network Password – TenOneDesign WiFi Porter Hospitality. All a guest has to do is tap their phone on the Wi-Fi symbol, and it will share the network name and password with the device. This works with all Apple iOS and Android devices made within the past 4 years.

  • Network Monitoring for Outages/Problems – Fingbox: The Fingbox is a great way to remotely monitor for internet connectivity problems. It doesn’t require a monthly fee for any essential features. It’s backed by Domotz, a company that does corporate network monitoring. I’ve been using Fing for years and highly recommend it.

Smart Lighting

You’ll want to make sure electricity is not being wasted when there aren’t guests renting the house. You’ll also want to run to some automation scenes to make it look like the property is occupied when it is vacant for extended periods. Smart light switch are the best solution.

  • Best Low-Cost Smart Light Switch – Belkin WeMo Smart Wall Switch 2nd Gen: The most cost-effective way to do this is the WeMo Wall Switch. No hub required. Yes, you’ll need to replace the existing wall switch. No, it’s not that hard to replace a switch. However, Belkin is only an option if your house has a neutral wire (i.e. house was built in 1980s or later.) Note: Belkin WeMo switches do not integrate with Lynx. But they do work with Apple HomeKit, which operates locally without a cloud connection.
  • Best Overall Smart Switch (and the only option for Older Houses with no neutral wire) – Lutron Caseta: Lutron makes the best smart wall switches, and they integrate with everything. The only downside is that they’re expensive and require a Lutron hub. They are also pretty much the only option if your house wiring doesn’t include a neutral wire. Lutron does integrate with Lynx and is also Apple HomeKit compatible.
  • Light Switch Labels: Most homeowners sometimes get confused about which switch controls which light. Help your guests and label the switches in every room.

SmartHome Hub for Local Control and Privacy

Best Easy-to-Setup Hub for Local Control – Apple TV with HomeKit (or maybe Apple HomePod Mini with HomeKit): Even if you’re an Android user, the easiest-to-setup smart home hub with local control of devices is the Apple TV and the HomeKit ecosystem. It doesn’t rely on a cloud connection to control locks and security, which means it will work even if the internet isn’t working. You’ll need to put it in a locked closet somewhere – it’s not for guests to use with the TV. HomeKit offers much better automation/routines than either the Google or Amazon ecosystems.

Thermostats and Pool/Hot Tub Temperature Control

Best Smart Thermostat for Guests – Nest Learning Thermostat: The thermostat needs to be easy for guests to use. The Nest Smart Learning Thermostat is the easiest to use. I have Ecobee thermostats in my home because they integrate better with third-party systems and have a few more technical features. But that doesn’t matter to guests. The complicated ecobee touch screen isn’t nearly as easy to use at the Nest dial. Go with Nest, and set the temperatures back when the house is unoccupied. (Both Next and Ecobee work with Lynx.)

Best Simple Pool / Hot Tub Remote Control – iAquaLink: This device is more focused on the property owner than the renter. The biggest reason you’d want this is to turn off the pool heater when not in use – heating a pool is expensive. The reason to choose iAquaLink is that it’s a simple system that can’t be easily accessed by the renter. Everything goes through a cloud connection, so it’s not directly accessible on the home network. The renter can still use the physical panel at the pool/spa. iAquaLink seems to be self-updated, so no manual firmware updates.

Best Integrated Pool or Hot Tub Remote Control – Pentair Intellicenter: Intellicenter is the best system for integration with home automations systems, and for services such as Lynx property management. It’s a bit more or a complicated and expensive setup, but it offers the most opportunity for automation and synchronization with guest bookings through Lynx.

Locks, Security Systems, and Exterior Cameras

Smart Door Locks: I personally use Schlage locks and they would be my first recommendation. Yale and August (both have the same parent company) are also good options. August requires a separate keypad to be mounted outside beside the door. All 3 of those work with Lynx and all 3 are Apple HomeKit compatible.

Alarm System – Abode: You don’t want guests to have to disarm a security system. It’s stressful. But if the property is going to be unoccupied for long periods, you should have a security system that you can control from your phone. A lot of people love SimpliSafe, and you can’t be the low monthly cost of the Ring Security System. But if it were me, I’d go with Adobe instead because it has some more advanced programming features, and it’s compatible with Apple HomeKit. I would create a HomeKit automation that auto-disarms the alarm system when the door lock keycode is entered (you need to have an AppleTV locked away in a closet to run this automation in the rental house.)

Exterior Security Cameras – Ring Floodlight Cam Wired Pro (w/radar), Ring Video Doorbell 4 (w/radar), Reolink POE: Guests do not want to be monitored by security cameras. It’s kinda creepy. But almost every house I’ve rented has had an exterior camera I’ve never complained about it. As the owner, you want to make sure there isn’t a huge house party going on. If you have a pool, you’ll definitely want to monitor that. So you should have cameras for the driveway at minimum, and a pool if you have one. You should not have cameras that can be easily unplugged by guests. And you can’t use battery-powered cameras that have to be frequently recharged. The easiest options are the Ring Video Doorbell 4 and Ring Floodlight Camera Wired Pro – I like them because they have radar, which greatly limits false alarms. But at my own house, I pulled Ethernet cables to exterior locations in installed Reolink RLC-820A PEO wired Ethernet cameras. If you can run Ethernet cable, this is your best option because it doesn’t rely on the cloud for storage (it writes to an internal micro SD card. (You can also get a Reolink Cameras NVR package for even more features.)

Around February 2017, my LG 55LV3700 started displaying this message (and blocking the screen) every 20 minutes:

“Updated firmware has been released! [Enter button] to update or [return button] to close.”

The problem is that, when I hit enter, nothing happened. When I went into the menu to force the update (Home -> Setup -> Option -> Support -> Software Update), it said “Firmware update not available.”

This wouldn’t normally be that big of an issue, but this message displayed every time I turned on the TV and came up again every 20 minutes while watching TV. It was extremely annoying to constantly be interrupted by a useless message.

I tried multiple options to resolve the issue without success

  • I disabled firmware updates in the support menu, but the message was continuously displayed.
  • I permanently disconnected the network connection, but the message still continuously displayed.
  • I did a full reset of all settings.
  • I downloaded the latest Version 05.00.14 software from the LG website and placed it on a USB thumb drive, but it gave the message “latest firmware already installed.”
  • I called LG tech support for help, and they provided no solution, other than for me to pay for a technician to come to my house and look at the TV, although they didn’t know what the technician could do to fix it.

I then realized that I’m an Idiot

Having tried every reasonable solution to solve this issue, I was desperate for a solution. It finally dawned on me…the message doesn’t specifically say “LG TV Firmware Update Available”…this may not be an LG TV message. I have a Roku streaming box that’s connected to a Denon AVR3312CI receiver that’s connected to a LG TV. All three of these devices produce video overlays. All three of them have update-able firmware.

Sure enough, going through the Denon menus, there was a firmware update available. Problem solved.

What Manufactures Should Do to Prevent this Problem

Manufactures often forget the context in which customers use their devices. Denon didn’t think to give users additional context around the annoying and persistent pop-up error message. Ideally, it would have have said “Denon A/V Receiver Firmware Update Available. Press OK button on Denon remote for more details.

Or even better, it would have automatically applied the firmware update itself without putting the bourdon of firmware maintenance on me.

It’s a lesson learned for me – never assume your perception of context is the only one possible, when troubleshooting or when creating something new.

I’m an active runner and audio enthusiast and I’ve had poor experiences with other Bluetooth sports headphones. So I was extremely interested when I was contact by 66 Audio and asked if I’d like to test their BTS Sport headphones. But to be clear, when my review is complete, I’m going to return the sample headphones back to 66 Audio. This isn’t a “free product bribe” review. So with that out of the way, let’s get to the review!

What I liked:

  • Useful Design and light weight. I was expecting them to be heavier and feel heavier on my head, but I was pleasantly surprised by the light weight. They gripped my head well and stayed in place when running. When I took them off to talk to someone, they were easy to move down to my neck and they gripped well there as well. They also fold up very compactly.
  • Great battery life. The BTS Sport Headphones are rated at 25 hours. I never charged them once and they lasted through many hours of running over multiple weeks and the battery still showed about half charged. So I can’t verify the 25 hour rating, but I can say that these headphone outlasted every other Bluetooth headphone I’ve tried by a significant margin.
  • Very Good Sound Quality: I was pleasantly surprised by the sound quality. It was much better than I was expecting for headphones of this size and price. The bass was low and strong but not over-powering, and they trebles were clear. Now to be clear, these are not going to replace my high-end Westone W50 In-ear monitors, but they’re not supposed to. The BTS Sport meet a completely different need and use case.
  • Logical Controls and LED Lights: There are Blue and Red LEDs that logically communicate power and charging status. A double-press of the main center button actives the virtual assistant (iPhone Siri in my case.) Pairing was activated by holding center button longer during power on, which is pretty standard for Bluetooth audio devices. The battery level displays next to the Bluetooth symbol along the top of my iPhone screen. The device name made sense when viewed in the Bluetooth Settings app of my iPhone (BTS Sport – didn’t have to guess which device it was.)
  • Necessary accessories included: A bag and charging cable are included. I like that the cable is included, because I sometimes don’t have the right one and it’s good to have an extra dedicated cable with each device. A USB wall charger isn’t included, which is fine with me, because I don’t need yet another one because they are pretty universal.
  • Worked fine for phone calls. For headphones, phone performance was acceptable. Not fantastic and not a replacement for my Plantroics Voyager conference call headset, but good enough to use when I received a call while out for a run. Unfortunately, there is no microphone mute switch, which means they aren’t ideal for conference calls.
  • Good Customer support advertised: 66 Audio advertises their warranty and customer support. Which I should have tested it out, I didn’t have time to do so. But based on what I’ve read, it’s much better than generic headphone on Amazon.

 

What I didn’t like:

  • I’ll get the big one out of the way: The BTS Sport are not sweatproof. During an especially long run on a warm day, they buttons went crazy and then stopped working all together. At first, I just got random pauses that I thought was phone related, but it turned out to be the play/pause button shorting out. About 30 minutes later, the volume buttons stopped working, and they all the buttons stopped working. I couldn’t even turn them off and had to leave them on after my run. They were dead the next day when I checked on them. I recharged them and apparently they had dried out enough to start working again. I don’t understand how Sports headphones not being sweatproof.
  • The Sunglasses Thump: If you wear glasses or sunglasses and run, these are not the headphones for you. The behind-the-neck band moves around enough to thump against sunglasses ear pieces. This creates a thump that is transmitted through the headphones that’s easy to hear. This also created some very slight discomfort on the backs of my ears.
  • No voice prompts: most headphone, even some that cost $20, have voice prompts for “power on” and “pairing” but the BTS Sport did not. This makes them a little more confusing to use, but not dramatically so.
  • The Button Labeling is a little confusing: The larger center button contains only phone icon, which isn’t intuitive labeling for what is also a Power button and and Play/Pause button
  • No active noise pass through: headphones are starting to have active noise pass-through features that use a microphone to detect outside sounds (such as an approaching car) and pass that sound through the headphone speaker. This being an over-the-ear design, some external sound make it in around the earphone, so this wasn’t a huge problem, especially at this price point. But I’d rather have the feature than not with sports headphones.
  • The placement of the Fast-forward, Rewind, and Volume Buttons are a little confusing: all of the button around the perimeter feel and look the same. When the headphone rotate slightly on your head, it becomes confusing which button is which. It would better if they felt more unique and has a less symmetrical placement around the outside circle of the headphone.
  • Volume control of headphones is separate from the phone: I had to separately adjust the volume of on my iPhone and on the headphones to get the right volume level. I’d rather have the headphones control the volume of the phone instead of two separate things to control to get full volume.
  • Price a little high: I thought the price was a bit high compared to other similar products available on Amazon. But my guess is that 66 Audio provides much better product support and warranty than these other brands, and you’re paying for that as well. But all things equal, I’d prefer a lower price and a reliable design that didn’t require warranty support.

The BTS Sport offer an interesting mix of small size/weight, over-the-ear design, and long battery life. I think they make a lot of sense for anyone who does non-cardio exercise and doesn’t wear glasses or sunglasses. But for sweaty outside sunglasses-wearning runner like me, they weren’t a match for my needs.

I’m interested to see where 66 Audio goes with their future products. I think BTS Sport was probably their “Minimum Viable Product”. In other words, they needed a first product to launch with and the BTS  Sport (which could be a rebranded reference design) was the best option. It looks like they now have some additional products, the BTS Pro and Revolution, that are more premium – and more importantly, are sweatproof. I think it’s going to take that type premium and differentiated offering for 66 Audio to separate from the large pack of headphone companies. The BTS Sport isn’t going to accomplish that.

While I absolutely love the car, and I’m particularly impressed with the fast and smooth shifting of the S-tronic transmission. I was very surprised and a bit disappointed that the transmission fluid (and spark plugs) have a scheduled maintenance interval of 40,000 miles. This is overly frequent for a modern car; the very similar Porsche PDK transmission has a 120,000 mile service interval.

Since I prefer to do to my own vehicle maintenance, I compiled a list of the required parts and a general overview of the transmission fluid change process.

Transmission Model: 0B5 7-speed dual clutch, DL501 high torque variant
Applications: used in various Audi and VW vehicles, including the Audi S4, S5, S6, S7 and the European versions of the A4 and A5

Maintenance Interval: 35,000 miles for first change; 40,000 miles for all subsequent changes

Fluid Capacity: 7 liters

Filters and Gaskets (need to be replaced every time):
Transmission Filter – Internal: Part Number B 532 542 9E (must remove transmission oil pan cover to access this filter)

Procedure:

  • Remove Side Fill Plug (to make sure you can access it – be sure you can refill before your drain)
  • Remove bottom drain plug from transmission pan, drain fluid
  • Remove pan
  • Replace plastic filter assembly inside pan
  • If there are magnets in the pan to pick up loose metal, clean them of all metal
  • Reinstall pan, use new pan gasket
  • Reinstall drain plug
  • Remove old external filter, install new external filter
  • Run fill tubing up through engine compartment, fill transmission with fluid until it overflows from the fill hole – car must be level
  • Install fill plug
  • Start engine, drive, and shift through all gears to distribute the transmission fluid; keep driving until the transmission fluid is up to operating temperature (38 degrees C)
    • Optionally, if you have the Ross-Tech VAG-COM VCDS software and adapter, go to Select Control Module->02 – Automatic Transmission-> Advanced Measuring Values->Transmission fluid temperature and make sure it reaches at least 38 degrees C
  • Remove fill plug, top-off fluid level, reinstall fill plug

Visits to local IMAX theater had me jealous. So I set out figure out what was missing. Much of what I learned is included in my other post entitled Ultimate Home Theater Subwoofer Designs, which describes Infinite Baffle and Folded Tapped Horn subwoofers. This post details how I installed an Infinite Baffle subwoofer system in my home theater.

I chose an Infinite Baffle subwoofer design because it delivers extremely low frequencies with perfectly flat response. Those low, chair-shaking / chest thumping / hair-on-your-head vibrating frequencies are what I was missing, and Infinite Baffle subs are the solution.

The drawback to Infinite Baffle subwoofers is that they require a very large separate adjacent space to act as the “infinite baffle” subwoofer enclosure. This needs to be a separate but adjacent space, such as an adjacent room, an attic, a crawl space, or closet. Typical Infinite Baffle subwoofer install locations include:

  • Subwoofers in ceiling, with back of speakers coming up into the space above
  • Subwoofers in the floor, using a crawl space or unfinished basement below as the enclosure
  • Subwoofers in the wall of the room, with speakers coming through the wall into an adjacent, seldom-occupied space

My home theater is in my basement, and the only option was to mount the subwoofers in the front right corner of the room in the 20-inch section of wall that overlaps with the mechanical room. I measured and remeasured, and it looked like I could just barely fit 18-inch subwoofers in the wall and still have about 1-inch of clearance between the rear of the speaker magnet and the water heater installation.

Subwoofer Selection

There are basically 2 options for Infinite Baffle subwoofers:

  1. Dayton Audio IB385-8 15-inch Infinite Baffle Subwoofer – approximately $130 per speaker

  2. Fi Car Audio IB318 18-inch Infinite Baffle Subwoofer – approximate $300 per speaker

Of the two, the Fi Audio is both the better performer and the better value. This is because one 18-inch Fi IB3 moves more air than 2 of the 15-inch Dayton Audio IB-385. Also, the Fi has a larger cone surface area, a longer cone excursion, and a more powerful magnet. This made it an easy decision: I went with Fi.

The most difficult decision is figuring out how many subwoofers are needed. I wanted to make sure I had plenty of bass without maxing out speaker cone excursion and damaging the subs. Why have 2 subs when you can have 4 at twice the price? 🙂 So yes, I went with 4 of the 18-inch Fi subs. The reason being that the biggest investment in this project was my time, and installing 4 subs from the start added a negligible amount of time. I didn’t want to risk a “do over.”

In retrospect, I would probably have been fine with just 2 of the 18-inch Fi subs. After installation during equalization, I reduce the subwoofer gain by at least half to achieve a flat response in relation to the other speakers. But at least I have some sonic insurance that there will always be plenty of bass reserve if ever needed.

How large does the adjacent room need to be?

It’s helpful to know what the smallest space requirement is for an Infinite Baffle sub installation. To determine this, look up the VAS specification for the subwoofer, which is measured in Liters. The required rear enclosure volume for each subwoofer should be 10 times the VAS or larger, but there is very little perforce difference if the volume is only 4 times VAS.

The VAS of the Fi Audio IB318 is approximately 12.5 cubic feet. So each IB318 needs only about 50 cubic feet minimum to achieve 4 time VAS and 125 cubic feet for more or more to achieve the ideal 10 times VAS. For my installation of four IB318s, the ideal volume is 500 cubic feet or more, and acceptable performance starts around 200 cubic feet. The total volume of my adjacent mechanical room approximately 2160 cubic feet, so it’s more than large enough. Building the Mounting Panel

The mounting panel needs to be extremely rigid to withstand the force produced by 4 huge subs. The 3/4-inch thick plywood available at most home improvement stores isn’t strong enough – the mounting panel needs to be strengthened by laminating (gluing) two panels together. To increase the strength, two different types of wood are used. Individually, each panel was extremely wobbly. However, after laminating the panels together, the assembly becme rock solid.

Amplifier Selection

DIY subwoofers require that you provide your own amplification. The most cost effective option is a professional PA amplifier; they deliver huge amounts of power at a relatively low costs. There are downsides to these amps, such as louder fans, brighter lights, no IR remote input to turn them on or off, balanced XLR input connections (instead of conventional RCA connectors), and odd Speakon speaker cable connectors. All of these issues can be overcome, as detailed below.

Components:

I’d be remiss if I didn’t give a quick overview of speaker impedance and how the subs are wired to the amplifiers. Each amplifier is in a bridged mono configuration with a 4 ohm load. The subs are 2 ohms each, with 2 subs wired in series to produce a 4 ohm load. On the EP4000 Amp, this is accomplished by flipping two of the configurations switch to enable bridge mode, and connecting the subs as shown in the diagram below.

Frequency Response Equalization of Very Low Frequencies

My Anthem D2 receiver has some of the best sound equalization available. Unfortunately, it only works between 20 Hz and 20,000 Hz, meaning that it doesn’t offer equalization for the lowest frequencies produced by an Infinite Baffle subwoofer setup. Fortunately, the receiver does have an option to pass these low frequencies to the subs, and the subs sound pretty good below 20 Hz without equalization.

So the simplest solution is to not worry about equalization below 20 Hz. But if your obsessive and want perfectly flat frequency response down to 5 Hz and below, this is the only setup I’ve found capable of doing that:
