RED BANK, NJ (April 14, 2026) – On March 27, 2026, 180 Turning Lives Around hosted a special evening at the Basie Center Cinema House, welcoming survivor families for a private movie night designed to provide a relaxed, welcoming environment where families could simply enjoy time together. The event marked the launch of Hope in Dark Light, a new initiative created and led by student volunteer Brooks Chandler.

The evening gave families the chance to experience a night at the movies in a setting that felt easygoing and supportive, with snacks, free parking, and additional support made possible by 180 and the Chandler Family. Thoughtfully planned with a trauma-informed approach, the event emphasized choice, ease, and a positive shared experience.

Approximately 18 families, representing more than 45 guests, attended the event, filling the historic theater to capacity and creating a warm, communal atmosphere.

Hope in Dark Light was inspired by Chandler’s lifelong passion for film and his belief in the emotional power of the movie theater. Having spent years immersed in cinema, cataloging and reviewing nearly 1,700 films, he recognized the unique way films can create space for reflection and shared experience. After meeting supporters of 180 at a film addressing domestic violence, he was moved to create an experience that could bring that same sense of ease to survivors and their families.

“It’s great to see this program come to life, and it was really fun to see families enjoying this film and a night out together,” said Chandler. “I look forward to many more opportunities to share my love of film with this important community.”

Chandler, a junior at Ranney School, has been an active volunteer with 180 Turning Lives Around since January 2025, supporting a wide range of events and initiatives throughout the year. His involvement has included community outreach events, donor communications, and event logistics, reflecting a consistent willingness to step in wherever help is needed. Over time, he worked closely with 180 staff to develop Hope in Dark Light, ensuring the program was carefully designed and responsive to survivors’ needs.

Hope in Dark Light is a powerful example of how personal passion can be channeled into service,” said Liz Graham, Chief Executive Officer of 180 Turning Lives Around. “Brooks approached this idea with intention and care, creating an experience that allows families to come together, enjoy themselves, and feel supported in a way that respects where they are in their healing process.”

“This event is a reminder that even in difficult moments, there is space for joy, connection, and hope,” said Adam Philipson, President and CEO of the Count Basie Center for the Arts. “The arts can be a powerful source of healing, supporting emotional health and overall well-being. We’re grateful to work with 180 Turning Lives Around to help create an experience where families can come together, share in something uplifting, and feel supported.”

The name Hope in Dark Light reflects both the cinematic experience and the journey many survivors face—moving from difficult circumstances toward healing and hope. By transforming a familiar setting into one where families can gather and enjoy a shared experience, the initiative highlights the importance of moments that feel positive, familiar, and self-directed.

Following the success of its inaugural event, 180 Turning Lives Around hopes to continue and expand Hope in Dark Light as an ongoing program for survivor families.

180 Turning Lives Around provides a comprehensive continuum of survivor-centered services, including 24/7 hotlines, counseling, advocacy, and a 21,000-square-foot Safe House. Initiatives like Hope in Dark Light complement these services by fostering connection, resilience, and emotional well-being in a supportive community setting.

Patricia Behrens, Co-Director of the 2NDFLOOR® Youth Helpline at 180 Turning Lives Around, shared testimony before the New Jersey Assembly Judiciary Committee on March 16, 2026, highlighting the root causes of juvenile delinquency and the importance of early intervention.

The legislative hearing, held at the Statehouse in Trenton, brought together stakeholders from across the state to discuss the recent rise in juvenile delinquency cases. Behrens was invited to share the perspective of 2NDFLOOR®, a statewide, 24/7 youth helpline serving young people ages 10–24.

Behrens emphasized that many of the challenges associated with juvenile delinquency begin long before youth encounter the justice system.

“From the perspective of a teen helpline like 2NDFLOOR, we often see the challenges that can lead to juvenile delinquency long before a young person ever encounters the justice system,” Behrens told lawmakers.

She highlighted the range of issues that youth face, including mental health struggles, family conflict, bullying, and social isolation, often compounded by a lack of trusted adults to turn to.

“What we consistently hear from teens is that they are looking for someone to listen without judgment and help them think through difficult situations,” she said. “Having access to a confidential, youth-focused support system can make a meaningful difference.”

Behrens also underscored the importance of accessible, early support systems like 2NDFLOOR®. “When youth have accessible supports and trusted places to turn during moments of stress or crisis, we have an opportunity to intervene early before those challenges escalate into behaviors that could lead to involvement with the juvenile justice system.”

Meeting Youth Before Crisis

Operated by 180 Turning Lives Around in partnership with the New Jersey Department of Children and Families, 2NDFLOOR® provides free, confidential, and anonymous support to youth across the state via phone, text, website, and mobile app.

Since its launch in 2024, the 2NDFLOOR® app has expanded access to support, with thousands of downloads and tens of thousands of interactions with young people across all 21 counties. The platform allows users to connect with trained counselors, participate in moderated peer message boards, and access resources on topics ranging from mental health to relationships and substance use.

The program has served more than one million young people over the past two decades, meeting youth where they are and empowering them to navigate life’s challenges in healthy, constructive ways.

For many young people, reaching out to 2NDFLOOR® is the first step toward being heard.

Looking Ahead

Behrens concluded her testimony by expressing gratitude for the state’s continued investment in youth services and reaffirming 2NDFLOOR®’s commitment to supporting New Jersey’s young people. “We are honored to help support this initiative in whichever way we can.”

As conversations around juvenile justice continue, 180 Turning Lives Around and 2NDFLOOR® remain at the forefront of efforts to ensure every young person in New Jersey has access to the support they need.

If you or a young person you know is facing challenges, 2NDFLOOR® is here to help—24 hours a day, 7 days a week. As a free, confidential, and anonymous resource for New Jersey youth ages 10–24, 2NDFLOOR® provides a safe space to talk, get guidance, and feel heard. “The story of a pit bull named Trouble, allegedly stabbed during a domestic dispute in Eatontown, is heartbreaking. While the focus of this case is understandably on the cruelty inflicted on an innocent animal, it is also important to recognize that violence toward pets is often connected to domestic violence in the home.

Individuals who harm animals are more likely to use violence against people as well. For many survivors of domestic violence, concern for a beloved pet’s safety is a very real reason they delay leaving an abusive situation. Abusers may threaten or harm animals as a way to exert control and instill fear.

We work with survivors throughout Monmouth County who face these difficult decisions every day. When someone is trying to escape violence, they should not have to choose between their own safety and the safety of a pet that is part of their family. That’s why our emergency shelter offers pet-friendly accommodations so survivors can bring their animals with them when they seek safety.

Through our Pet Advocacy Program, survivors can also access essential pet resources, including food, supplies, and veterinary care, so they can remain safely with their beloved pets as they rebuild their lives.

If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, help is available 24 hours a day through 180 Turning Lives Around at (888) 843-9262 or at 180nj.org.” -Liz Graham, CEO, 180 Turning Lives Around

At 180 Turning Lives Around, survivor voices guide the work every day.

Through the Survivor Advisory Board, individuals with lived experience of domestic or sexual violence partner directly with 180 leadership to inform programs, initiatives, and community engagement. Established last year, the board ensures survivor perspectives actively inform how the organization listens, learns, and evolves.

“The Survivor Board is special because every member brings lived experience as a survivor of domestic violence,” said Nicholas Steele, Co-Chair of the Survivor Advisory Board. “Each of us has chosen to use those experiences not as negatively defining moments, but as a source of insight, strength, and advocacy.”

Survivor Insight in Action

The Survivor Advisory Board is made up of individuals who previously participated in 180’s programs and services. Members meet monthly and serve in an advisory capacity, offering feedback on programs, communications, and new initiatives, sharing impact stories with the community, and ensuring that 180’s work remains survivor-centered and trauma-informed.

Current members of the Survivor Advisory Board bring diverse perspectives and lived experience to the organization:

  • Ashley Reid – Co-Chair
  • Nicholas Steele – Co-Chair
  • Janice Miller – Founding Member of 180 Turning Lives Around
  • Amanda Cruz – Member
  • Courtney Gilmartin – Member

“The Board plays an important role in ensuring that 180’s work remains survivor-centered and trauma-informed,” Steele said. “Our voices help reinforce the organization’s mission by offering hope, guidance, and reassurance to those who may be taking the difficult first step of asking for help—reminding them that they are not alone.”

Ashley Reid, Co-Chair of the Survivor Advisory Board, emphasized the importance of survivor insight in shaping effective support systems.

“The addition of the Survivor Board is special because it represents 180’s dedication to their mission of being as thoughtful and informed as possible in order to best support the healing journey of survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault,” Reid said. “Having Survivor Board insight into our programs, processes, and resources ensures that our survivors and their families are being supported in the most empathetic and effective fashion possible.”

Board members provide a perspective that cannot be replicated without lived experience — helping 180 consider how survivors may experience programs, services, and outreach, and offering recommendations to strengthen accessibility, impact, and trust.

“Our role is to consider how survivors may experience or interpret well-intended efforts,” Steele said. “To offer feedback, adjustments, or recommendations that strengthen impact and accessibility, while ensuring survivor voices remain meaningfully integrated into the organization’s work.”

From Lived Experience to Shared Leadership

For board members, participation is deeply personal and deeply purposeful.

“I decided to join the Survivors Board because I didn’t want my experience to define me in a negative way,” Steele said. “Instead, I wanted to use it to create something positive; to help others feel supported, empowered, and understood during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.”

Reid shared a similar motivation, rooted in community impact and generational change.

“It’s important to me to help those who have been affected by the unwanted actions of another, who are seeking a healthier, safer life for themselves and their families,” Reid said. “Knowing that we can take our collective experiences to make a difference for even one survivor and their children, and understanding what that trickle-down effect means for future generations, is both immensely meaningful and fulfilling.”

A Legacy of Survivor Leadership

The belief in survivor leadership is not new to 180 Turning Lives Around.

Founded in 1976 as the Women’s Resource and Survival Center, the organization has a long history of innovation and survivor-driven advocacy, including becoming the first federally funded domestic violence shelter in the United States and establishing Monmouth County’s first rape hotline.

Janice Miller, Esq., a Survivor Advisory Board member and founding leader of 180, has been part of that journey for nearly five decades.

“I am a member of the Survivor Advisory Board, which was established last spring, and we are working very hard to develop our roles,” Miller said. “Our goal is to bring awareness to our board, our community, and beyond, of what domestic violence really is. It can be a child, a girlfriend, a boyfriend, an elder—it affects people of all genders and backgrounds.”

Drawing on her decades of experience, Miller emphasized why survivor leadership remains essential, even as laws, systems, and services evolve.

“If we don’t keep survivor voices at the center, we risk losing sight of what people actually experience when they ask for help,” she said. “Programs can look good on paper, but survivors are the ones who know what feels safe, what feels accessible, and what still creates barriers. That perspective is irreplaceable.”

For Miller, the Survivor Advisory Board represents both continuity and forward momentum.

“I want victims to know that they can become survivors,” she said. “The Board exists to lead by example and to remind people that reaching out for help can be the beginning of a safer, more empowered chapter.”

Improving Care Through Survivor Partnership

Today, the Survivor Advisory Board continues that legacy by working collaboratively with 180 leadership to better the survivor experience, from raising awareness to enhancing programming and sharing lived insight that helps the organization evolve.

“The Survivor Board works to empower our community and amplify what’s possible for survivors hopeful for a peaceful, healthy, secure life,” Reid said. “Survivors do not have to live in shame. Their experiences don’t define them, and they will always have a community ready to support them at 180.”

Steele echoed that sense of purpose.

“The Survivors Board exists as a beacon of hope,” he said. “We are here to show that this does not have to be the end. Support is available, and while asking for help is often the most difficult step, it can also be the first step toward healing and stability.”

Keeping Survivor Voices at the Center

For 180 Turning Lives Around, embedding survivor voices into its work reflects a broader organizational commitment to trust, dignity, and healing.

“Survivor-informed work is an ongoing commitment,” said Liz Graham, CEO of 180 Turning Lives Around. “The Survivor Advisory Board ensures that our programs, services, and decisions are grounded in lived experience, compassion, and respect. Their voices strengthen our work and help us better serve every individual who turns to 180 for support.”

As the organization continues to grow and evolve, the Survivor Advisory Board remains a vital part of ensuring that 180’s work is informed by both best practices and the people it exists to serve.

“The deaths of Rob and Michele Reiner are devastating, and my heart goes out to their loved ones and everyone affected by this tragedy. When violence happens within a family, it can be difficult for people to recognize it for what it is. Too often, domestic violence is narrowly understood as intimate partner violence alone. In reality, domestic violence also includes family violence: harm between people who live together or are connected by family ties.

We are seeing this reality play out every day. Over the past year, our team at 180 Turning Lives Around has seen a clear uptick in family violence cases, with more individuals and families coming to our shelter and seeking support. These situations are complex, painful, and frequently hidden until a crisis occurs.

This moment is a sobering reminder that violence in the home can affect any family, regardless of status, success, or public image. Help is available. Domestic violence is broad, and no one should feel they have to navigate fear, instability, or harm alone. If you or someone you love is living with violence, whether from a partner or a family member, please contact us at 732-264-4111 or visit 180nj.org for 24/7 support and resources. Support, safety, and hope are possible.”

“Earlier today, like so many survivors, I felt a wave of panic that Sean Combs might walk free. That fear is something countless survivors know all too well: the gnawing uncertainty of whether their voices will be honored or dismissed. As a survivor of domestic violence myself, I know how devastating it is when those who do harm are not held accountable. Today’s sentence does not erase the harm, and many will feel it could have and should have gone further. But it is meaningful, and it matters that accountability was delivered in a courtroom where so often it is denied.

Judge Arun Subramanian’s words resonate deeply: this sentence sends a message to those who do harm and survivors alike that exploitation and violence against women is met with real consequences. To every survivor who is weighing whether to come forward with their own story, please know that your voice matters. I stand in solidarity with those who testified in this case, and with all whose stories have not yet been heard.” -Liz Graham, CEO of 180 Turning Lives Around

It is with deep sorrow that 180 Turning Lives Around shares the news of the passing of our former Executive Director, Anna Diaz-White, who led the organization with courage, compassion, and conviction for four decades.

Under Anna’s leadership, 180 became a national model for comprehensive, trauma-informed support for survivors of domestic and sexual violence. She launched one of New Jersey’s largest domestic violence shelters, established the Family Justice Center, and created the 2NDFLOOR® youth helpline, which has reached more than one million young people across the state.

Her tireless advocacy, especially for those who are too often unheard—women, children, immigrants, LGBTQ individuals, and communities of color—changed countless lives and left a lasting legacy across Monmouth County and beyond.

“Anna has fought an incredible battle this past year, embodying the relentless spirit that defines her. She has always been a fighter: championing survivors, strengthening our community, securing the stability of our organization, and caring deeply for our dedicated, remarkable staff,” said Liz Graham, CEO of 180 Turning Lives Around. “Having Anna as my mentor has been one of the greatest privileges of my life. If I could be even a fraction of the leader she is, I would consider it an achievement. She is truly in a league of her own.”

In 2023, Anna was inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame as an Unsung Hero, reflecting a lifetime of meaningful, revolutionary work.

We offer our heartfelt condolences to Anna’s family, friends, colleagues, and the thousands of lives she touched. We are forever grateful for her vision, leadership, and love.

In recent weeks, news coverage of the ongoing trial involving Sean “Diddy” Combs has been both widespread and graphic. For many, the headlines are just another celebrity story. But for survivors of domestic and sexual violence, these stories can cut far deeper.

At 180 Turning Lives Around, we want to acknowledge that media coverage of high-profile abuse cases can be distressing and even re-traumatizing for survivors. Whether it’s a headline, a video, or a social media post, these moments can resurface painful memories and emotions, even years or decades later.

Why These Headlines Matter

When details of abuse are repeated across multiple news outlets, often with sensational language or visuals, they can have a real emotional impact. For survivors, these stories are not hypothetical. They may mirror personal experiences or bring back feelings that were once safely tucked away.

Feeling overwhelmed, anxious, angry, or numb in response to media coverage is a normal reaction. It’s the brain’s way of processing unresolved trauma, and you are not alone in feeling this way.

Common Reactions to Triggering Media Coverage

Everyone processes trauma differently, but some common reactions to triggering news can include:

  • Flashbacks or intrusive thoughts
  • Trouble concentrating or sleeping
  • Emotional numbness or sudden mood swings
  • Avoidance of media or conversations
  • Physical symptoms like headaches or fatigue

None of these reactions mean you’re “backsliding” or “not healed enough.” They simply mean you’re human, and your body and mind are doing their best to protect you.

You Don’t Have to Go Through It Alone

Whether your experience was recent or long ago, support is always available. We offer a full range of free, confidential services for survivors of domestic and sexual violence. These include:

  • 24/7 hotline: A safe space to talk, any time, any day, at 732-264-4111
  • Individual counseling and support groups
  • Crisis intervention and legal advocacy
  • Emergency shelter and safety planning

Our services are available to people of all genders, backgrounds, and identities. If media coverage or resurfaced memories are making daily life difficult, we’re here for you.

For Friends, Allies, and the Community

If you’re not a survivor but want to be supportive, consider how you engage with stories like this in your conversations and social media. Avoid sharing explicit details or sensationalized content, and check in on friends who may be affected. Even a simple “thinking of you” can go a long way.

We also encourage everyone to share resources instead of speculation. Survivors are already carrying enough. Let’s make sure the messages they see remind them of support and solidarity, not just the pain.

A Final Note

Healing isn’t linear. It’s a lifelong journey, and triggering events can show up when you least expect them. If you find yourself struggling, know that it’s okay to ask for help, whether it’s your first time or your tenth.

At 180 Turning Lives Around, we believe that every survivor deserves to feel safe, supported, and heard. No matter when your journey began, we are here to walk with you.
