Today we have the privilege of discussing a life, a fall, a recovery and a coming to faith that bears witness to the saving grace of Christ. It is a testimony that reveals the challenges of one life - from not fully hearing the gospel in church as a youth, to the ravages war can have on a veteran, to recovery in both faith and life. “We have an awesome God!” exclaims Pastor Ervin McNeill. In A Story of Transformation and Witness - The Testimony of Ervin McNeill, Pastor McNeill shares his testimony and how by the grace of God he came to the Pacific Garden Mission where he accepted Christ in 1979 and today continues to serve as the mission Chaplin. You will hear of the transforming power of God’s Word in very real terms. Speaking from his own experience and his accepting responsibility for his own choices in life, he notes, “God’s Word, it changes the mind about the world around us.”

A simple discovery. A family treasure. It is true that "... we are a product of our parents and they are a product of their parents, and so on..." says Don Baar who has been working on building a family tree for some years. When he mentioned 2,800 individuals, I was awed. One morning, sitting with Don and some friends between services at church a conversation came up about contemporary issues related to immigration and from that was birthed this episode, Legacy - A Revealing Discovery of Faith and Values . A story of immigration from the 1840's or so from Holland to America. I was struck by the discovery of a pocket size notebook that contained a letter with the details of the journey from Europe to Sheboygan, Wisconsin. The experience of deep painful loss for the pursuit of something more made bittersweet through a legacy of faith and identity that continues today. A memory made known that inspires Don to share with youth the importance of family each year at Timothy Christian Schools.

It's that time of year. The New Year is a great opportunity to set out with new ambitions and improvement programs, but is this hope? I find myself pondering just what hope is and what the secret to a transformed life could be. So many of us seek it… especially now as the tinsel and glitter of Christmas is put neatly away and we slide back in to the pattern of hope anticipating the new year will bring change. The hope of wrongs made right or at least put behind us, and a prosperous future. We discuss the expectations we have about this time of year in terms of faith and in terms of how we often depend on ourselves for the best things in life and that expected change will come. In Christmas Matters in Your New Year we look at how the story of Christmas matters all year! For it is because God entered human history by a humble birth, God incarnate in Jesus Christ, that we have true hope for change and life transformation.
During winter break from seminary, I decided to read a fabulous new book called Hidden Christmas by Timothy Keller. In the book, Keller shows that Christmas is not just a celebration of Jesus' birth. Rather it is the coming of our Lord. He explores what this means in our lives using the familiar biblical images and characters from the nativity. I recommend the book highly. In this episode, I have built on this theme partially reviewing the book and sharing musings on life about how Christmas is a hope to live into for life. I wish you the best in the New Year.

Have you wondered just how it is that people come to Jesus? Why do they make that choice? This question has a wide range of answers governed by biblical truth. Today we discuss both the doctrine and the experience of coming to Christ - two people, a contrast of cultural backgrounds, one Christian, one not. Special guest Mika Gladden, my lovely wife, born and raised in Japan, makes her first appearance on Faith that Acts to share how she came to know Jesus. This episode is a conversation on a subject about which many notable Theologians do not agree - a matter of a sovereign God and human responsibility. Today, we peer through the lens of human experience and perspective on how we come to Jesus; we explore the need, the seeking, the invitation, and response to the Gospel, biblically.
Though debate has raged in theological circles ever since Augustine and Calvin, I have come to know where I stand. Jesus said, "Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Matt. 11:28). "God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that WHOSOEVER believeth in Him should NOT perish but have everlasting life" (John 3:16). The Israelites accepted foreigners to serve in their homes through circumcision. Christian faith is a circumcision of the heart and likewise we are adopted into the family of God. It is by the Gospel that we come. Paul said, "It is the power of God for the salvation of ALL who believe. First for the Jew, then for the Gentile." (Rom. 1:16). This is where I stand - if you believe in Jesus Christ and repent, you are saved. It is the free gift of God to those who believe. It is by grace through faith.

Here is how to persevere, biblically. Paul likens it to the training of the body. Training requires discipline. Perseverance though, is much about the will, the heart, surrender. Does sticking it out conflict somehow? Well, because we utterly depend on God, sometimes it can be confusing to understand just what it is to persevere. This is a lively discussion about how we can depend on the Holy Spirit to work spiritual growth in us while we exercise our responsibility to strive - in faith. In Where Is the Power of the Cross in My Life I explore the answer to this seemingly simple question. I learned a lot preparing this episode. We are to compete so as to win and train so as to compete. I cannot compete in a marathon unless I train to a level of readiness consistent with the goal.
Here, we lay out the biblical perspective on perseverance leveraging scripture, Charles Spurgeon, Jerry Bridges, John MacArthur, John Piper as well as various studies. Listen in. Here are four steps that will encourage you in your walk. Be in the Word - in my experience, everything stems from that, it is the grease on the skids. Be empowered by the Holy Spirit who will help you persevere; it's not something we do on our own.
1) Firmly believe in and stand on the Gospel of Jesus Christ
2) Train our minds (and bodies) by the exercise of reading and meditating on God's word daily. Fix our eyes on Christ by holding to His teaching. Hebrews 12:2. If we don't know what He teaches we cannot hold to it and apart from Him we will not bear fruit
3) Offer our bodies as living sacrifices in accordance with what is revealed in the Word. According to Paul in Romans 12:1,2 this is our spiritual act of worship. Repent of convictions we receive in Christ as we train in the Word. Going forward, make choices for what is right and avoid sin as a matter of the will.
4) Commune with God often in prayer throughout the day as a friend who is with you. Also, commit to do so with intention several times a day. Make an appointment with God .... and keep it. He won't fail you.

A quick comment about the bible I used to prepare this discussion, the Thompson Chain-Reference bible. It is one of the best study bibles on the market and has been for years. It's focus is not on commentary but rather a system of topical chains that you can follow through the entirety of scripture. It's helps and archeological notes in the back are also great. I recommend this bible highly in any of it's versions.

"It was a long walk..." says Josh, "and I'm just at the beginning." In Plug in the Jug: Alcoholism to Saving Faith, a story of recovery and discovery, Josh recalls a young life that struggled with disappointments in faith, in family, and in what the world has to offer. He shares the story of growing in a church never knowing the joy of a relationship with Christ and being exposed only to the rules. Much of life was about what not to do. His parents divorced and in that breakdown of family, he found freedom from going to church and freedom from discipline. He sought peace in alcohol and drugs at an early age and gradually withdrew from friends isolating himself into what became dark addiction that seemed to allow escape from reality. In this powerful episode, Josh, opens up about how what he thought was an escape actually enslaved him. He shares about his road to recovery and ultimately a road to saving faith in Christ and the joy of family and friends. Alcoholism to Grace!Barry Gladdenfullfalse42:182015 Global Leadership Summit

Do we keep our commitments or walk away. Do we receive criticism with a humble heart or reject it?Relationships Matter, I discuss 3 relationships that have impacted my life.
Simply, we don't walk away from relationships we value. Rather we leave those we do not value. Here we discuss everything from puppy love to spouses and God. This episode is sure to stimulate your mind about how and why we form friendships and how the relationships we engage in can influence our lives positively or negatively and that what we do in our relationships is what people see and remember. Do they see Christ in you or do they see you? Did you ever hear Mom say, "Don't hang out with the wrong crowd?" Mom was right. We get known by the company we keep and often we come to reflect the values of the company we keep. Does their moral compass reflect God?
[powerpress]This episode shares observations of unconditional love in relationships revealing truths from actual life experience and God's word. If we truly love God, change does come in our lives. We have talked much before about how faith should result in actionable response to what God has done according to how you are called. Now we discuss that one of the greatest impacts of our faith is on our character. To be a light to the world, when people interact with us, they need to see us less and Christ more.]]>Barry Gladdenfullfalse18:19From Big Rigs to Christ and Bikes

Have you ever wondered what your calling is? I think we all have a one time or another. I remember sitting with the guidance counselor at school to discuss what I would do with my life. You know, that time when they try to align your interest, academic strengths, and possible majors with a suitable institution? You just kind of hope they get it right. Ultimately, life happens and adjustments get made or it was never right to begin with, we're unfulfilled and we begin to search. Well, I took my search to God. I was shocked by where it led and learned much about myself in the process. For years I thought the world was my oyster - or at least parts of it! In reality, getting beyond myself was a long and sometimes difficult process. There was a point that I discovered that the world was not all that I thought it to be. Getting there involved brokenness, recognition of need, loss of self in terms of realizing that God’s purpose is greater than my own and putting the prideful, self-sufficient me aside, the impact of His word, and the positive godly influence of both people and community in my life.Getting to life's purpose requires a change in perspective and our disposition towards God. I have. In Season 1 Episode 5 - Mentors and Their Impact, I speak about mentors who have impacted me for Christ and I am fortunate to have such men in my life. I speak to the committed role of a mentor, not a chance relationship with someone we look up to or who possesses a business skill or talent we want. Rather, it is an intentional relationship with someone whose values, spiritual maturity, and life skills we not only admire but they agree to this Christ-centered role in our lives and hold us accountable even when it may not be wanted or convenient. Be sure to listen and be encourage to foster or seek these meaningful relationships in your life.Mentors and the Impact for Christ They Can Have on Others
I think men and women alike can benefit from this discipline. Many think it's a one way effort and just refrain from the whole idea or we excuse ourselves because we aren't "perfect". In reality as you will see, properly executed, it is of great benefit to both the mentee and the mentor. Mentors and their impact has great potential for godly relationships. If you don't have a mentor, pray and ask. If you don't have a mentee, prayerfully identify potential candidates and explore possibilities. If you have one of either, or both, consider yourself blessed and encourage others to follow your example. The planned interview was not able to make it for podcast, so when it is available, it will be posted as part 2 to this episode.

Sometimes it's an uplifting experience. Something we read, heard or saw happen. Sometimes it's a relationship. Sometimes it's a loss. Sometimes it's temporary. Sometimes it's lasting... I have experienced what I'm coining The Word Effect - Impact of God's Word. How has God's Word impacted you? I pursued the Word as an answer about how to know God. Then knowledge of it began to influence my life and decisions (though I often still made wrong choices). Then, it's invaluable life principles built on the foundation of Jesus began to stir a desire to respond to what He had done on the cross and in my life. Now I want to act in a manner consistent with what I believe. This episode fills in some of the details regarding the effect God's Word had, and still has, on me.

I learned by reading in the bible about the many characters we all know. They weren't just irrelevant people founded in myth. They were real. They were flawed. But, they interacted with God and God interacted with them. I also, found deep conviction and transforming power as the Holy Spirit began His work. The reality of God set in when I saw transformation occurring in my life; those close to me could see the transformation... transformation that was beyond my own muster and ability.
