]]>When we interviewed the game's star, Lee Majdoub, and the game's narrative director, Sarah Beaulieu, our conversation explored the creative development of Mirage and the significance of this role for Majdoub. It was clear through our conversation that Majdoub was in a collaborative, supportive, and culturally respectful environment, one that unfortunately remains rare for actors of Southwest Asian or North African (SWANA) backgrounds. The dedication that Beaulieu, her narrative team, and the Ubisoft developers took to make 9th Century Baghdad as culturally meaningful and intriguing for players, for Arab and other SWANA players to feel represented in, and for players outside these cultures to learn about.

Whether you like to sneak your way towards targets or go in guns blazing (Kate), the franchise has remained versatile over its years of developer drama. The plot throughout the series' history has also been impressively thick, and we're not just talking about how good Agent 47 looks in suits (Kate).

In this interview, we discuss the series' relevancy during the current rise of anti-Asian hate crimes and how the series introduces audiences to Asian American history. Warrior does this in multiple ways, but referencing specifical historical moments to Ah Toy herself, a character based on a real woman of the same name. A self-proclaimed history buff, Cheng explains how she knew the history of San Francisco ahead of shooting the series, but dove even further into by learning more about Ah Toy, of which there isn't much written from her perspective.

We confront the criticism and meet it with our own as we contextualize Deep Space Nine within the larger history of science fiction and Roddenberry's vision. And we do this all with the help of Alexander Brazie.

Here, Roux dives deep into her love of the franchise and how her fandom connects to her writing process. She also discusses how writing a book for an established franchise works, how she had to adjust certain elements of her writing (Anduin almost had a tattoo), and how she got to bring LGBT+ representation to Azeroth, which was a priority for Blizzard. Additionally, we get the chance to learn more about Roux's fandom in general and how she got flex her horror muscles in certain aspects of the novel.

In this episode we break down why Danny Trejo matters to film, fans, and why his status as an icon is not only incredible after his journey but life-changing for those he meets. While this isn't one of our longest episodes, we get the chance to dive into an icon, discuss our favorite movies of his and show just why Danny Trejo Matters.
Even if you're unfamiliar with Danny Trejo, you probably know what he looks like. Long hair, thick mustache, brown skin, and a tattoo of a woman in a sombrero on his chest. He began his career consulting on a set to help an actor train as a boxer after he was recognized by Eddie Bunker, who remembered him from his time in San Quentin. This one consultative job led to him starring and consulting Heat, and other films. We walk through parts of his filmography and explain how his role in Rober Rodriguez's Spy Kids opened more doors for him.

]]>If you aren't familiar, Astroneer is a sandbox exploration game which features drop-in, drop-out co-op and survival-like aspects in a beautiful and whimsical science fiction world. Taking place in the during the 25th century’s Intergalactic Age of Discovery, Astroneers explore the frontiers of outer space, risking their lives in new and unexplored environments to unearth rare discoveries and unlock the mysteries of the universe as they move from planet to planet. In Astroneer players can work together to build bases and vehicles and manipulate the terrain to create anything you can. Dig or build, a player’s creativity and ingenuity is the key to getting the most out of the game which fuels the exploration aspect.
As Tirado explained, the goal of the game is to teach players to explore, not exploit the planet. Having actively decided to not include weapons and combat in the game, the developers behind Astroneer have created a game that facilitates co-op play, ingenuity, and exploration without forcing combat like other sandbox survival games. In fact, the focus of the game is to always push the player towards science and research, distinguishing itself from other space games and solidifying themselves as one of the best community play games out right now.
With exploration and community as it's focus, Tirado explained that the removal of friction in gameplay is one of the important aspects that the developer team focuses on crafting in Astroneer isn't a job and the new additions of glow-sticks and the jetpack in the upcoming update are here to help players play, while removing some of the grind. As Tirado explained, Astroneer is a toybox for the players, not work, like others in the game-type.
For the entire interview, hit play on the audio above. Astroneer is available now on Steam, Xbox One, and is coming to the PlayStation 4 in November of 2019.

There, Mulligan explained each party-member played an alter-ego of themselves. “Bloodkeep,” Dimension 20's second season, focused on a pure evil group of characters. Now, "The Unsleeping City" retells the history of New York City and showcases the magic that Mulligan experienced as when he lived in the city. With 17-episodes, this season premieres today, July 9th.
Mulligan serves as Dungeon Master and creator of the series, while Beardsley is a part of the adventure as Pete the Plug, in "The Unsleeping City." During the interview, Mulligan and Beardsley took a deep dive into their love of the table-top game and ultimately how fantasy works to tell human stories and how even when a scene starts with a werewolf giving a blowjob, it can end in something emotional.
Mulligan took us down memory lane and how being ten-year-olds gave him the confidence to get into being a Dungeon Master, while Beardsley talked about their journey to falling in love with the game after coming into it with Dimensions 20's first season, "Fantasy High." Real world problems, fantastic and game shattering choices, we talk about it all. If you're the fence of starting your own campaign, give this interview a listen and see why it's time to roll the D-20.

]]>In part 2, we talk about the social issues and impact of the NFL and its players. Kate takes us through the charitable work of the league and the fines that happen when a player attempts to use there playtime as a platform. Matt brings us through the interesting history of how the league went from having Black and Native players in the beginning to moving to a league that that needed to was forced into integration by stadium owners. We then talk about the lack of discipline in the NFL and how a "base-line" six game suspension for domestic abusers is inconsistent and almost never has an impact on the field, only for the PR of the league. Then we have a passionate discussion about "paid patriotism" and how it influences the backlash Colin Kaepernick received and other player receive now for taking a knee during the National Anthem.

]]>With Daredevil, Marvel solidified itself as strong storytellers in a very real and not hyper-color world. With Jessica Jones, Marvel and Netflix show that by choosing show-runners reflective of their story, they could explore complex issues such as interpersonal violence, trauma, and recovery. Using the same reflective style, by tapping African American voices to tell Luke Cages story, they create a political superhero series that is very much attached to the real life issues faced by communities of color today. And with Iron Fist, well, Colleen Wing was cool.

This week, we tackle a genre that makes some uncomfortable and empowers others: True Crime. Kate brings us through the fact that we have always been obsessed with true crime and why, with help from Brianna from the Murder Dictionary Podcast. We talk about the community that has been built around it, the influence of real life serial killers on our pop culture horror creations, it's majority female audience, and how learning about heinous crimes helps listeners and readers of the genre cope with their anxieties.
