Ava man sentenced to 12 years for meth possession https://www.douglascountyherald.com/2026/10/09/ava-man-sentenced-to-12-years-for-meth-possession/ Fri, 09 Oct 2026 12:30:53 +0000 https://www.douglascountyherald.com/?p=75588 On September 29, during a Wright County criminal docket, Circuit Judge Craig Carter sentenced Kevin H. Hansen, 56, Ava, to 12 years in prison for the class D felony of Possession of Methamphetamine as a prior and persistent drug offender in case 26WR-CR00453 after Hansen entered a plea of guilty.  This case was a change of venue to Wright County at the defendant’s request.  There was no agreement for sentencing so arguments were heard.  After arguments concluded, the Court sentenced Hansen to 12 years in prison pursuant to §217.362, the Long-Term Treatment program.

This plea resulted in Hansen’s Wright County case, 25WR-CR00214-01, for Possession of Methamphetamine to be revoked.  The court ordered the previously imposed 7-year sentence be executed pursuant to §217.362, Long Term Treatment and both cases are to run concurrently.  The Douglas County offense occurred in January of 2026 and was jointly investigated by the Ava Police Department and the Douglas County  Sheriff’s Department.

Ava schools prepare for Homecoming weekend https://www.douglascountyherald.com/2026/10/01/ava-schools-prepare-for-homecoming-weekend/ Thu, 01 Oct 2026 19:19:21 +0000 https://www.douglascountyherald.com/?p=75583

Ava R-I students and families will have a busy end to Homecoming week, with a districtwide parade Friday afternoon followed by Homecoming coronation, football and a high school dance that evening. Additional dances are also planned for elementary and middle school students Saturday.

This year’s Ava High School Homecoming theme is “Under the Sea.” Spirit Week runs through Friday, Oct. 2.

Districtwide Homecoming parade

The Homecoming parade will begin at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2.

The parade will start at Ava Middle School and travel to the Ava square. Because the parade involves students from across the district, families should be aware of the afternoon schedule and any related traffic or pickup changes around the schools and downtown area.

Ava High School

Ava High School will hold its Homecoming coronation at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, ahead of the Bears’ football game.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

The 2026 Homecoming candidates are Tessa Dobrovits, Abigail Fortner, Claire McDonald, Braxton Nuckols, Grant Swatosh and Cody Wiker.

Following the football game, the high school Homecoming dance will be held from 9:30 to 11:30 p.m.

Tickets are $3 for singles and $5 for couples and may be purchased in the high school office.

Ava Middle School

Ava Middle School students in seventh and eighth grades are invited to a dance Saturday, Oct. 3, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Admission is $3 per person.

Organizers describe the dress code as ranging from Sunday best to formal attire.

Ava Elementary School

Ava elementary students in kindergarten through fourth grade will also have Homecoming themed dances Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Ava High School East Commons.

A daddy and daughter dance will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m., followed by a mother and son dance from noon to 1:30 p.m.

Admission is $2 per student and $3 per adult. Payment will be accepted at the door by cash or check only.

Parking will be available in the cafeteria lot.

The elementary dances are being hosted by the Ava High School Pep Club.

Sheriff warns residents of computer virus https://www.douglascountyherald.com/2026/10/01/sheriff-warns-residents-of-computer-virus/ Thu, 01 Oct 2026 17:55:53 +0000 https://www.douglascountyherald.com/?p=75581 Douglas County Sheriff Chris Degase is warning area residents about suspicious emails reportedly being sent from local email addresses.

According to Degase, the emails may contain malicious software that could allow someone to gain access to a victim’s computer and personal information.

Windows users who have opened a suspicious email are encouraged to check the Task Manager on their computer for unfamiliar programs or services, including those identified as “ScreenConnect” or “Phone Link.” Degase advised anyone who finds an unfamiliar program running to shut down the computer immediately.

Mac users who receive one of the suspicious emails should delete the email and any associated files or downloads without opening them. Anyone who has already opened or installed a suspicious attachment or program should seek technical assistance rather than assuming deletion alone has removed the threat.

Those who need assistance checking their computer may contact PC Express at 417-683-2022.

Degase urged residents to use caution when opening unexpected emails, even when the message appears to come from someone they know locally.

Ava fall yard sale, cleanup dates set https://www.douglascountyherald.com/2026/10/01/ava-fall-yard-sale-cleanup-dates-set/ Thu, 01 Oct 2026 17:43:08 +0000 https://www.douglascountyherald.com/?p=75579 Ava residents will have two opportunities to clear out unwanted items in early October, with the citywide fall yard sale followed by the City of Ava’s annual fall cleanup.

The Ava Area Chamber of Commerce will host Ava’s Fall City-Wide Yard Sale Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 1 through 3.

Numerous sales are expected throughout town during the three day event. The Chamber noted that no official yard sale maps will be available this year, and shoppers are encouraged to drive around Ava to locate participating sales.

The following week, the City of Ava will conduct its City-Wide Fall Clean-up from Monday, Oct. 5, through Friday, Oct. 9, for residents within the city limits.

East Ward pickup will take place Monday and Tuesday, while West Ward pickup will be conducted Wednesday and Thursday. Friday will be used for a final sweep, although the city noted that a return trip to individual streets is not guaranteed.

Residents should place unwanted household and garage items at the curb and have them ready for pickup. No callbacks will be available.

The city will also collect brush and branches if they are piled separately and bundled, along with bagged leaves.

Electronics and hazardous materials will not be accepted during the cleanup.

For questions about the fall cleanup, residents may call the City of Ava at 683-5516.
