“I never thought I would earn my degree.”

For Javid Zahir (B.S. ’26), earning his bachelor’s degree has been “an emotional roller-coaster.” His daughters and family are proud, and he was promoted to group vice president at My Auto Group in Muskegon after graduating.

For Jasmin Dykstra (B.S. ’26), earning her bachelor’s degree fulfilled a lifelong dream. And now she’s pursuing another. She has now been accepted into a master’s program in counseling.

Javid and Jasmin are among Cornerstone University’s August SOAR graduates celebrating new opportunities, career advancement and goals that once seemed out of reach. Cornerstone is proud to welcome our newest Golden Eagles to its alumni community.

This August, both earned their bachelor’s degrees through SOAR, Cornerstone’s mobile learning program because it was developed to help people just like Javid and Jasmin who had set aside their college dreams.

Javid, a Marine veteran, husband and father of four, credits his degree with helping him earn a significant leadership promotion. Jasmin, who worked full time as a Career Readiness Facilitator at Kent ISD while raising two young children, has now leveraged this accomplishment for future graduate-level training.

SOAR was created specifically for the millions of adults balancing full-time work, children and family responsibilities who need a more radically affordable and radically flexible way to earn or finish a college degree. Students complete accredited Cornerstone University programs and certificates through their smartphones, a device they use daily.

For Javid, he says that challenge was personal. He had tried college before but eventually gave up on the idea that he would earn a degree.

“I couldn’t afford it at that time in my life,” Javid told WOOD TV8 earlier this year.

SOAR gave him another way to try. Javid fit course work into his day — listening to podcasts and audiobooks on the go, watching course videos during lunch and completing work from his phone when he had time.

“It breaks it down into much smaller segments and it makes it so that you are able to fit it into your day,” he said.

Javid earned his Bachelor of Science in Strategic Business Management while serving as director of operations for My Auto Group in Muskegon.

“I was promoted to a vice president role days after graduating,” Javid said. “A lot of what I learned is actually pretty applicable. Most importantly, it gave me more confidence in myself for this role. Truthfully, I wasn’t a proponent of college. It’s changed my perspective.”

When asked what graduating means to him?

Javid says: “First of all, I’m excited. My daughters and family are proud of me, and that’s such a great feeling. I genuinely can’t wait to walk next year!”

For Jasmin, One Goal Led to Another

Jasmin had dreamed of earning her bachelor’s degree for years. She also completed her Bachelor of Science in Strategic Business Management while working full time and raising two young children.

“Its affordability and flexibility made it possible for me to complete a lifelong dream while working full time and raising two young children,” Jasmin said. “Without SOAR, I truly do not think I could have managed it all.”

Now she has been accepted into a master’s program in school counseling.

“Earning my bachelor’s degree has given me the confidence to pursue this next goal,” she said. “Before SOAR, pursuing a master’s degree had never even crossed my mind.”

A new academic year brings new classes, relationships, decisions and plans for the future. Convocation 2026 began by asking Cornerstone University students, faculty and staff a more urgent question: How would their year — and their lives — be different if they lived ready for Jesus Christ to return?

The question brought Cornerstone’s 2026-27 theme of the year, “Jesus Is Coming Again!,” directly into a profound annual tradition tied to the university’s gospel mission. Convocation calls the Cornerstone community together to welcome and dedicate new and returning students, faculty and staff to the LORD and commit the academic year to Jesus Christ.

Timely and urgent Scripture framed the gathering and its central challenge to expect Jesus’ imminent return and to live faithfully as Christ lived, honoring God in all we do. Revelation 22 proclaimed the certainty and suddenness of Christ’s return: “Behold, I am coming quickly.” In Luke 18:8, Jesus asked the question at the heart of President Gerson Moreno-Riaño’s, Ph.D., message: “Nevertheless, when the Son of Man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?”

Students and the community were challenged to prepare for Christ’s return by cultivating a faith that is real, personal and enduring. Drawing from Luke 18 and Hebrews 11, it was emphasized that Biblical faith cannot be reduced to identifying with a Christian institution, signing a confession of faith or knowing the right doctrine. Christ asks whether He will find faith when He returns — faith that trusts God enough to obey Him and remain faithful.

“What are you going to do, students? Because now it’s not your parents’ faith, your family’s faith, your church’s faith, the president’s faith, my faculty members’ — it’s yours.”

That responsibility reaches into everything students will pursue at Cornerstone. A degree, friendships, competition, a career and even recognition and achievement may be good things, Dr. Moreno-Riaño said, but none can become greater than knowing and following Christ. “Nothing compares to the beauty and the grandeur of Jesus.”

Convocation concluded with an “altar call at your seat.” In quiet prayer, students, faculty and staff were invited to assess their own faith before the LORD and ask Him to reveal coldness, remove what keeps them from hearing His call and deepen their desire for Him.

The community then stood together in worship, beginning the academic year with the promise of Revelation 22:20:

“Surely I am coming quickly.”
Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus!

Conceived in rape and adopted into a diverse family of 15, he has spent his career speaking publicly about abortion, adoption, race, identity and religious liberty — even when those convictions have brought national criticism and a federal free-speech battle.

On Tuesday evening, September 15, Bomberger will host a special screening of his 30-minute autobiographical documentary, “Should Have Been Aborted.”

Author, speaker and ordained pastoral counselor Joe Dallas has spent nearly four decades helping people understand and reclaim God’s created intent for sexuality. Drawing from his own story of leaving the church, embracing a gay identity and ultimately returning to Biblical Christianity, Dallas brings a deeply personal perspective to questions of sexuality, identity and Biblical truth.

If Jesus Christ returned today, would you be ready?

That was the question President Gerson Moreno-Riaño asked more than 800 Cornerstone students, alongside faculty and staff, at the first chapel of the academic year.

Christ Chapel filled with worship as the Cornerstone community came to hear God’s Word and begin a new year centered on one of Scripture’s most important truths: Jesus Is Coming Again! Returning students were excited to be back, while the new Class of 2030 experienced their first chapel as part of the Cornerstone community.

President Moreno-Riaño welcomed each class before asking the question at the heart of his message: If we really believe Jesus Christ is coming again, how should that change the way we live?

The return of Jesus Christ, President Moreno-Riaño said, is “one of the most central truths of Scripture” — a truth that is beautiful, encouraging, hopeful and sobering. He pointed students to Christ’s words in Revelation 22:12:

“Behold, I come quickly, and my reward is with me to give to every man according as his work shall be.”

After students participated in a live poll about Christ’s return and final judgment, President Moreno-Riaño compared their responses with national polling. Fifty-five percent of U.S. adults say Christ will return, while more than 60% believe He will return to judge humanity.

He asked, “What’s the relationship or the connection between what we say we believe and how we live our lives?”

“When I saw that 55% of Americans believe in this and over 60% believe that there’s a final judgment, I thought, okay, if this is true, shouldn’t our country be different?”

President Moreno-Riaño focused on Christ’s command to “behold” — to “wake up,” “pay attention” and focus on the reality of His return. And Christ’s words “I come quickly,” he said, leave no room for uncertainty.

He urged students not to treat Christ’s return as secondary to the issues competing for their attention today. “We can talk about all the stuff in our culture today, AI, politics, conservative, Republican, communist … but this is the most central thing. The return of our Savior Jesus.”

Cornerstone, he said, is preparing students for their degrees and careers — but also for something greater. “We really want to get you ready for that moment. That’s the ultimate graduation.”

On Saturday, September 12, Strikes for Stripes 2026 — an annual Veterans vs. First Responders baseball game raising funds for Hero Services — returns to Cornerstone University’s De Witt Baseball Field for the fifth consecutive year. As part of Cornerstone University’s America 250 community events, this year’s gathering also commemorates the 25th anniversary of September 11 and celebrates Cornerstone University’s 85th anniversary, bringing together veterans, first responders, families and neighbors for an evening of remembrance, patriotism and community.

“For 85 years, Cornerstone University has prepared men and women to lead lives of purpose, service and influence,” said Dr. Kevin Hall, vice president of academics & spiritual formation and former first responder. “During this historic year of celebrating America and remembering 9/11, we’re honored to host Strikes for Stripes alongside Hero Services as an expression of that enduring commitment, bringing people together to honor the veterans and first responders whose courage and sacrifice have preserved our freedoms and continue to strengthen the communities they serve.”

Partnering with Hero Services has become a Cornerstone University tradition. Strikes for Stripes raises critical support for the organization’s Wellness Program and Relief Fund. Every ticket, donation and merchandise purchase helps provide wellness resources and financial assistance to veterans, first responders and health care professionals. The annual event gives families an opportunity to celebrate those who serve while helping ensure these everyday heroes receive the care and support they deserve.

Cornerstone University President Gerson Moreno-Riaño calls on higher education to confront one of its defining responsibilities in the age of artificial intelligence in a new op-ed published by the Washington Examiner, “The One Thing AI Can’t Replace — and Colleges Refuse to Teach.”

“To be literate in AI is not merely to know how to type a good prompt,” Dr. Moreno-Riaño said. “It is to know when to trust an output, when to verify it, and when to reject it . . . [and] to understand the moral ramifications of the choices we make with these systems and to act in harmony with what is genuinely good for us as human beings.”

The op-ed follows President Moreno-Riaño’s recent Fox News interview, which featured Cornerstone’s commitment to preparing graduates with the knowledge, wisdom, judgment and character to remain irreplaceable in an AI-driven world.

President Moreno-Riaño points to two recent national polls showing that Americans see AI as both a major opportunity and a technology that requires safeguards. At the same time, according to Pew Research Center, approximately 70% of U.S. adults are already using various AI tools. Students, workers, patients and voters are interacting with AI every day, yet few have been formally taught how to evaluate what it tells them.

“America will not lead the age of AI through computing power alone,” he wrote. “It will need people capable of directing that power wisely — citizens, workers, and leaders who can use these tools while staying thoughtful, responsible, and fully human in the process.”

That creates an urgent responsibility for higher education. President Moreno-Riaño rejects both banning technology graduates will encounter in the workplace and allowing students to outsource their thinking to machines they have never been taught to question.

His argument goes deeper than teaching students technical AI skills. Genuine AI literacy requires judgment, and judgment must be formed. President Moreno-Riaño calls for an education grounded in the pursuit, defense and application of truth, beauty and goodness — “coherent and coordinated moral formation” that develops the human capacities technology cannot provide.

“AI should be used to sharpen the learning journey of ourselves and our students. It must not serve as a cheap substitute for it.”

For Christian higher education, that responsibility begins with a fundamental understanding of what it means to be human. President Moreno-Riaño points to imago Dei — the Biblical truth that human beings are created in the image of God and therefore possess inherent dignity, genuine agency and responsibility for how they use the tools placed in their hands.

“Human dignity does not rest on functional prowess or processing speed. If it did, machines would already have surpassed us.”

That conviction allows useful technologies to be embraced as tools rather than ends in themselves.

At Cornerstone, President Moreno-Riaño points to a new on-campus AI certificate, dedicated AI courses in the Cornerstone Core and the new Honors Program curriculum, and an AI Advisory Board of distinguished academic and industry experts as ways the university is putting this approach into practice.

His larger challenge is to higher education itself:

“The universities that matter most a decade from now will be those that treated AI literacy as moral and civic formation, not merely a technical add-on. Cornerstone intends to be one of them.”

Cornerstone University is grateful for the opportunity to share its approach to artificial intelligence in higher education through a recent feature in Fox News. The story highlighted the university’s strategy for integrating artificial intelligence across teaching, learning and career preparation.

According to President Gerson Moreno-Riaño, while some universities have completely restricted AI and others leave decisions to individual faculty members, Cornerstone has taken a focused, university-wide approach to lead when other universities remain unfocused in their strategy. A key step was to establish the President’s Artificial Intelligence Advisory Board to help guide its long-term AI strategy.

“We want to lead. We want to be ahead of other institutions, but we need the insight of experts in the marketplace right now that can give us guidance, direction and insight to do this and to do it well,” President Moreno-Riaño told Fox News.

Beyond the AI advisory board, Cornerstone is preparing faculty to thoughtfully integrate artificial intelligence into teaching and learning while expanding opportunities for students and professionals through the university’s new Applied Artificial Intelligence Certificate.

President Moreno-Riaño said the goal is not simply to teach students how to use AI, but to equip faculty to help students develop the wisdom and judgment that technology cannot provide.

“We want to ensure that we prepare and develop our faculty well, our staff well too … to engage this in a way that continues to form our students, not just inform them. And prepare them with wisdom, not just information. … The dilemma with AI is it gives you the right answer but robs you from the struggle.”

The president believes that wisdom is forged through the struggle of learning — asking questions, solving problems, making mistakes and developing sound judgment — not by simply receiving instant answers. Additionally, rather than preparing students for a single “AI-proof” career, the university is focused on developing graduates whose character, creativity and wisdom make them indispensable in any profession.

“I don’t think there’s a safe career or a safe diploma, a safe major. I think every field will be significantly transformed by this. The question we should be asking is that we should think about producing graduates that can’t be replaced.”

At the heart of Cornerstone’s approach is its conviction that technology should never diminish the value of the people who use it.
