Welcome to the fourth and final blog of this series. There really are many ways we can support our teens at school. In our first article , we discussed the newer view of the learning brain and how parents can use this information to inform our own approach easily.  In article two, we looked at the importantce of  providing and supporting 5 good health choices for the teen learning brain. The third article diescribed some simple steps to support a teen’s emotional intelligence so they can truly experience education as a gift.

Now, in this last blog of this series, we will concentrate on how we can support the natural learning patterns of the teenage brain in the home environment. If we can successfully create a supportive learning brain environment, we can be confident we are helping make our children’s’ high school years a positive experience. Again we will be tapping into the research of the newer view of the learning brain. This current research shows that a learning brain achieves its best with less external stress, which means providing an environment that supports the natural  patterns of  learning we all have as part of our biology. We need to help our teens tap into the chemistry of motivation, attention and memory formation for authentic learning. Sounds like a mouthful, right? But I promise, we can do it!

Looking at the big picture - Brains are Pattern makers

Research shows the brain is consistently seeking patterns and making patterns in order to learn. When our brains are presented with new information, our memory is working hard to understand how this new piece of information is relevant to us, and what it relates to in terms of information we already know, so it can all be linked and understood. In this way, the brain learns best when looking at the big picture. In the teen learning brain, this is especially important as the brain remodelling process is constantly making decisions about what information is related to each other, what’s relevant, and how it fits in with the bigger picture. The brain then decides what bits to keep and what bits to ‘forget’. It’s kind of like how we complete a jigsaw puzzle. Looking at the big picture on the front of the box, we do the edges first as we seek patterns and how things might fit inside. This is actually a great analogy to use when talking to our kids about how to “study” particular subject areas. (it’s a great way that everyone can understand the learning brain).

Even as adults it’s often hard to make sense of how the detail we work fits in at the big picture, especially when we feel stressed and under pressure in the moment. So, imagine how hard it is for teens! However, there are a few ways to help our kids make sense of new information and how it fits into what they are building on and where it is going, and keep them looking at the big picture, for example: • Encouraging our teens to download a copy of the Syllabus or Learning Plan for each subject and have them in a handy place at home to refer to. This helps remind them of how things fit within the big picture. • Keeping them engaged by asking them to explain the “big goals” of the course to us, which also brings in the sense of “team” learning. • Encouraging them to produce simple Mind Maps to place around the house. The more colourful – with clear links and language for repetition – the better. • Start conversations around relevance and real-life stories, and relate it to what is going on in the family and in the world. This helps keep the HSC as a part of life, rather than separate from it • Normalise the process of learning, as it is the most natural thing our brains do. Getting our teens to do the above tasks can be difficult, as it is often something they want to resist. If they are resisting completing the above tasks, you might need to model it yourself to set an example. Openly describe what processes you are taking to learn or complete a task. If we can normalise the process of learning, it will help keep our teens on track and seeing the bigger picture.

The Myth of Multi Tasking

Has your teen ever tried to convince you they can easily multi-task while studying? Well, the cat’s out of the bag. Evidence is now quite clear that successfully multitasking is a myth in terms of effectively completing any kind of task. For example, if our teens have music, videos, and online chat going on in the background while studying, then their efficiency will be low (even if they say they can multi-task!) The separation of activities is absolutely one of the hardest things to encourage with this generation as they are rarely disconnected, but we do need to have the conversation and make a point of modelling focusing on one thing at a time. It’s also helpful to have a conversation with our teens about what we find difficult about the distractions of technology or trying to multi-task. If possible, search together for evidence of studies (or set them a challenge to show you they can successfully multi-task) will help deepen the conversation. The exception is really Baroque music. Its pace and patterning can be supportive to brain function when learning. We have actually downloaded some Spotify collections for Baroque and the Brain. What has ended up happening here though is I am benefiting from it and my son doesn’t play it! Respecting they have a choice is something we talked about in article 3 as well.

The Physical Environment at home

Now that we know the teen brain needs to look at the big picture while resisting the urge to multi-task, how can we create a physical environment at home to foster this learning brain requirement? Here are a few tips and tricks. 1. Keep their bedroom free from devices at night. It’s a source of light, distraction and noise. If your teen insists on keeping their phone in their room at night because they use it as an alarm clock, simply buy them an old-school alarm clock to use. 2. Encouraging the right amount of sleep is vital for a learning brain environment because memory is forming and is backed up while we sleep. We talked about the importance of “sleep hygiene” in article 2 of this series. 3. Try essential oils. The power of aromatics for emotional support and memory cannot be ignored. Diffusing certain essential oils has been shown to have a positive neurotransmitter effect to support both memory and recall, and reduce stress. Citrus and mint oils can have an especially positive effect. 4. Keep the “study” area organised. Every teen has their own preferred way of studying – whether it’s at a desk in their bedroom or on the living room floor. Wherever or however your teen studies, it’s important to keep it tidy and void of distractions (like electronics!) 5. Keep a big calendar on the wall. Planning is vital when it comes to keeping organised and looking at the big picture. By putting a big calendar on the wall with upcoming events (both in an out of school) we can help keep our teens see how much time they really have available for completing tasks and on-track. You could also use a large whiteboard and rework it each month. 6. Don’t focus on the marks. This is possibily the most important of all the tips. Part of creating a positive home environment is making sure you’re not consistently focusing on the ATAR or “ranking”. Avoid dinner table discussions about marks and the ATAR. Instead, steer the conversation towards the importance of learning and education. If our teens understand why they are learning, then their best marks will follow with the least amount of stress.

We have talked about the newer view of the learning brain, how to provide basic biological support to help our children as they go through high school, supporting a teen’s emotional brain and providing a positive learning environment. There’s no denying the high school and HSC years can be tough on teens and parents alike, but by working to support and understand the way our teens’ brains work, as well as how to best support the learning brain, we can make these years fun, exciting, and positive for all. After all, Education is indeed a gift.

We all want our kids to get the most from their education at school, to achieve success and be stressed less. Sometimes as parents we feel a little lost as to the best way to support this.  In Part 1 of our Parent’s Guide we introduced the findings of current research into  the teen brain under three headings  – the Biological Brain, the Emotional Brain and the Learning Patterns of the Brain.

In Part 2 we discussed the importance of basic Biological support to help our children as they go through school and the actionable steps we oursleves can take towards engaging the Newer View of the Biological Brain. Now, in Part 3, we will go deeper into emotions.

The Older View of the Learning Brain focused on the incorrect idea of fixed IQ and ignored the importance of Emotional Intelligence. Well, the newer view of the learning brain also recognises the impact the chemistry of emotions has on learning too and we can really make a difference to this at home. We don’t need to be trained in psychology to be able to effectively support our children.  All we need are the right tools, and the confidence that we can do it.

The Difference Between Adult & Teen Brains When It Comes to Emotions

For us as parents and for our kids as well, it’s very helpful to know that during adolescence the ability to regulate mood is chemically at an all-time low. It’s natural, and it’s important our children know that. Like we discussed in Part 2, the teen brain is not must a mini adult brain. Teens may appear to not be listening, or ignoring some of our more subtle body language we make as adults. The reality is, the adolescent brain undergoes major “reformatting” in key areas, which makes teens unable to accurately read facial expressions for emotion, or body language cues. This same reformatting can interfere with recall and decision making. Essentially, the changes are normal, and if we are all aware of the differences between the emotional brains of kids versus the emotional brains of parents, then we can better support our kids, and they’ll be better able to lean into our support.

Chemistry of Emotions and Learning

There has been plenty of research over the last 30 years to uncover how the brain naturally learns best. Along with understanding mood, the chemistry of attention, motivation and memory are now quite well understood. Emotion itself has been shown to drive learning or in the same way block it. The learning brain needs regular rewards or wins to get a hit of dopamine, a good narrative to relate to, a challenge and a clear target to aim for. Feelings of unease, fear or long-lasting stress create a chemistry that hinders learning. In fact, the same research that informs what makes a successful online game is the research into what the learning brain needs in order to work at its peak. The gaming and gambling industries have jumped on this research but it is still not being fully implemented in our education systems.

What’s in it For Them?

Evolution and science show us the brain is built for survival. To survive we need to learn and our brains are built for learning. As described above, this learning is actually driven by human emotions. This is especially true in adolescents. Remember how in Part 2 we discussed how the adolescent brain is constantly being remodelled as the brain tries to figure out which connections to keep and which to ditch (AKA synaptic pruning)? The connections it keeps are the ones that it can see are important for the future in some wayand the ones that are emotionally charged. Research shows in order for our kids to get the most from school, they basically need to know “what’s in it for them”, why the things they are being taught are important for their personal future, and for this to be provided in an emotionally safe environment. The chemicals of stress – particularly cortisol – can have a negative effect on memory, learning and one’s overall health. When continuously elevated, cortisol can actually damage receptors in the Prefrontal Cortex in the brain which are important for learning and higher-order thinking. Higher-order thinking is when we are required to question, probe, think critically, consider different perspectives and organise ideas. A pretty important time in life to avoid damaging this In order to create a less stressful environment, we need to help our kids find reasons to learn – reasons beyond the exam mark at the end. This comes back to the idea of “what’s in it for them” other than a good mark. Encouraging our kids to regularly ask the question “Why?” is also a great tool for helping them see what’s in it for them, while at the same time reducing their stress levels. The first and one of the most important steps in creating a less stressful environment is encouraging kids to pick subjects they actually enjoy, rather than the ones that “scale the best”. Research shows the brain naturally learns best when it is interested and engaged, so if a child truly enjoys the subject, it’s more likely they’ll do well in it anyway.

Adopting a Growth Mindset

You may have heard of the term “a growth mindset”. This new way of learning and thinking basically considers ‘mistakes’ as great opportunities to learn. Mistakes are not the measure of personal worth, and looking at them as something you learn and grow from is a great way to support mental wellbeing. Growth mindsets aren’t just for the classroom. We can foster this mindset at home too by giving our kids a dopamine hit by finding reasons every day to recognise and celebrate even the smallest of wins. Better yet, start celebrating the “losses” and how these losses will bring them closer to bigger and better “learning wins” in life. Resilience is something to practice in all areas. We can embrace a role to normalise the learning process and the challenges that all of us face throughout life. Its all natural. We can model resilience by sharing some of the challenges we are facing, and how we are working through them. As adults we know most things in life take effort and problem-solving skills. Teens don’t necessarily know this truth yet. Most will think that if you have to work too hard at something, you must be doing it wrong. They’re not being lazy, it’s just the way their brains think especially with all the examples of instant gratification they are exposed to in the media and modern life.

Mind Your Words

The most basic emotional support starts around the language we use at home, and it can make a huge difference. We can practice using positive and solution-focused language. Teens often take the way other people see them to heart, which greatly affects what they believe in themselves and their abilities. For example, have you ever said: “I didn’t do well in maths either”, or, “I am not good at the creative stuff”, or, “I didn’t like science” to make them feel OK about their own studies? My guess is most of us  have. However, this can inadvertently instil the belief in our teens that some of the academic challenges they face are genetic and not within their control and can result in them thinking that they just arent good at that either, and not try.

Developing a Question Bank

So, how can we really support an emotional learning brain? The reality is our teens don’t want advice, and definitely not advice from their “old” parents. What do they want? They just want to be listened to, even when they aren’t actually communicating with us. How do we listen? Start by developing a Question Bank.

 

It’s important to avoid common and closed-ended questions like “How was your day?” Even questions like “What did you do today” aren’t going to be very fruitful. Instead, shift the questions to something like these:

·   What was the best class you had today? 

·   Whose teaching did you enjoy the most today? 

·   What was the most interesting bit of information you heard today? 

·   Who had the best lunch today? 

 

These types of questions help to frame a positive mindset for the information they will subsequently share. We need to think about how to ask the deeper questions without being seen as a “pest”.

Listen to what they have to say, sit with it, and then ask some targeted questions later on to get a deeper insight into what’s going on in their world. If your child knows you’re there to support them no matter what, they’re much more likely to feel less stressed and at ease when they’re at home, which will greatly benefit their leaning brain. We come back to the start – that learning is natural and is driven by emotion.

One final and important note.

As parents we can feel that we need to do it all.  Lets all support each other knowing that its OK for us to reach oput for help as well. If our teens are expereincing what we think is too much stress, or if we are concerned about their mental health and wellbeing then there are plenty of people and resources to support us and our teens through this major period of growth, learning and transformation.

Welcome back! Education is a gift and we all want our children to experience more success and less stress while they are at school. How do we best help as parents? It is important that we remain confident that we can help in so many ways to make the experience of high school a healthy, happy and positive one for our children.

In our first article, we discussed how we can be empowered by the newest information coming to light about how the brain learns and how easily we can apply some of this at home to support our own children through their High School years. We distinguished between the Older and Newer Views of the learning brain, remembered how a lot of us experienced education under the Older View.

The three key areas of knowledge about the Newer View of the Learning Brain were introduced as Biological, Emotional and Learning Patterns as a way to look at easy steps to apply this.

In this second article, we start to apply the Biological findings more specifically. These show the importance of the support we can provide in relation to general wellness, and basic Biology to help our children particularly as they go through their final years in High School

Biological needs

The Older View of the learning brain appeared to keep basic biological needs separate to brain function. However, this older view actually limits our ability to make the most of our learning brains and also ignores the impact that holistic health and wellness can have on the way kids experience the process of learning and education.  

Did you know the brain is biologically the neediest part of the human body? Our bodies function best when basic biology is in balance. The same is true for the brain.

A Healthy Brain for our Kids starts with us

As parents, we can certainly help with some of the choices needed to provide the best Biological conditions to support the maturation and development of the wonderful teenage brain.  Of course, never as ‘advice’ – as teenagers, we know, don’t generally want this from us, but by modelling these choices and opening discussion around this to help support good practice for brain health for learning and support their developing decision-making skills. 

One of the best things we can do for our children is to make sure we are helping them to learn choices to foster a healthy brain. This can be achieved by ensuring a few basic biological needs are met; diet, sleep, hydration and exercise are all paramount to both the mental health of our kids, as well as their ability to learn. Keeping on top of diet, sleep, water intake and exercise is vital to every human, but even more so for teenagers and their learning brains.

Teen Brains are Biologically Different 

At all stages humans have learning brains, plastic brains, but the teen brain is actually fundamentally different. Contrary to the ‘Older View’ the teenage brain is not just a mini adult brain. It is biologically different to the brain of a younger child and that of an adult. This is because it is at a stage when it is constantly undergoing key constructional changes that will be setting it up for the future. It is a “rework in progress” and is at one of its optimal learning periods.

 

What does this mean? Major parts of the brain really arent working at full capacity. The brain matures from the back to the front. Connections for emotional control, decision making and executive function, which are all controlled by a part of the brain called the Prefrontal Cortex, are not mature until the mid 20s. The teen brain’s prefrontal cortex isn’t fully formed yet, so it is illogical for us to expect them to make the “best” decisions around study and risk and communication.

This makes it even more important for us to be supporting them make healthy choices for brain health.

Healthy choices

1. THE GUT-BRAIN CONNECTION: NUTRITION & THE tEEN BRAIN

A balanced diet is important for all humans, and especially so for teens. Our diet provides the building blocks for all that our bodies do. Nutritional options that support good gut health create the best environment for a well functioning brain. In fact, there’s tonnes of new research out there supporting the importance of the gut-brain connection. We have heard about the gut “microbiome” and the importance of good bacteria, and the GBA or Gut Brain Axis of intimate communication. Science shows a troubled intestine can send signals to the brain, just like a troubled brain can send signals to the gut. Therefore, a healthy gut is vital for a healthy brain, and vice versa. The connection is via both nerves and chemical signals. Many of the chemicals that are vital for brain function, mood and learning – such as neurotransmitters like serotonin, are produced more in the gut than in the brain! As parents we help support the base nutritional needs of our children as a given. Targeting good gut health and healthy gut bacteria is another step for supporting learning naturally. Providing lots of fresh, fibre-rich foods, good quality protein, food that is low in sugar, and in some cases some daily probiotics. Eggs, fish, Greek yoghurt, nuts & seeds and at least five servings of fresh fruit and vegetables (apples, plums, blueberries, leafy greens) can all contribute to a balanced and gut supportive diet. It’s worth noting that many kids like to skip breakfast, but a protein and fibre-rich breakfast is essential. Missing breakfast can lead to sugar cravings in the early part of the school day, while eating processed snacks and sugary foods can lead to glucose spikes and rapid drops. This ultimately makes it difficult for kids to concentrate and learn. During adolescence there is also a natural and constant fluctuation in mood stabilising brain chemicals. So, for our teens it’s imperative to nurture a healthy gut with healthy gut bacteria to keep the brain as happy and stable as possible and reduce stress

2. Drink Up: Hydration & the Teen Brain

As adults, it’s easy to forget to drink water throughout the day, even when you’re sitting at desk all day with a water bottle right next to you. For kids with crazy busy school, sport and social calendars, it’s even easier to forget to drink water. However, research shows even slight dehydration has a negative effect on general health and particularly on attention and memory. Not to mention we often mistake thirst as a need for a sugar hit. The Institute of Medicine says teenagers should have 1.7 to 3.3 litres of water a day depending on age, size and sex. Research suggests adolescent boys generally need to drink more water than girls do. As parents, you need to make sure your kids are staying hydrated. To make water taste better, we can try adding some fresh orange and cucumber slices, or even some strawberries and blueberries for a sweeter hit, or food grade, pure essential oils, particularly the citrus oils.

3. Sleep Hygiene: Sleep & the Teen Brain

We probably all experienced the impact of sleep deprivation on our memories and health when our kids were young! So much goes on in our brains while we are sleeping. General growth and repair, immune boosting, metabolic balance and learning. Yes learning. Did you know memories are automatically strengthened or alternatively ‘pruned’ during the REM (Rapid Eye Movement) phases of sleep? This is so important for the teen brain. In adolescence the brain is constantly being remodelled through learning and pruning. Connections are consistently being lost (also known as synaptic pruning). This means the brain is trying to figure out which connections and memories are important to keep. Sleep is vital for this remodelling. As parents, it’s important we encourage good “sleep hygiene”, which includes 8-10 solid hours of sleep a night. Research shows that fewer than 8 hours of sleep can have a terribly negative impact on your teen’s physical and emotional wellbeing, as well as their learning and decision making. Less than 8 hours and the last REM cycle, the most important for memory formation we think, is lost. It has been suggested that up to 80% of all ‘behaviour’ issues in schools are related to sleep problems. Having a routine time to go to sleep is optimal, being relaxed before bed, limit blue light in the hour before bed and not playing interactive games for a couple of hours. The brain will automatically focus its energy while asleep to ‘learn’ the thingsa that were most emotional, exciting or that it last did – so gaming before bed can result in the brain trying all night to work out the game. If your child’s asleep brain is trying beat the game, it won’t be processing any of the other learnings that generally occur while they are asleep. Reading is one of the best ways to prepare for sleep, promoting a relaxed and calm state. We talk to our kids and students about setting up sleep patterns to make the most of your brain’s ability to do your homework for you while you sleep! A nice option.

4. Up and At ‘Em: Exercise  & the Teen Brain 

Some kids love P.E, while some absolutely loathe it. In the last couple years of high school, P.E no longer becomes compulsory, but it’s important to keep our kids active and moving. From team sports to personal fitness routines and other activities, exercise is vital for the learning brain. In fact, exercise is just as important for brain health as it is for physical health, especially during adolescence while the brain is maturing. The current recommendation for teens is 60 minutes of mid to vigorous daily exercise, yet research from WHO suggests 81% of kids don’t achieve this. The benefits of daily exercise include sharper memory, better concentration, as well as positive impacts on mood such as the alleviation of stress and anxiety. While a simple walk outside can boost mood and health, there are additional benefits for regular aerobic activity.

5. Healthy Conversations about being Smart

Learning is the most natural things our brains can do. They are built for it. Our own attitudes to learning at school may well be scarred by our own experiences when we were at school under the “Older View”, and it might not seem all that natural to some of us. The older view of a fixed IQ was limiting for so many. We now know every brain is ‘plastic’. This is the essence of learning and we can all “make our own smarts”. Just knowing there is another way of seeing this can help our children experience high school as a healthy, happy and positive time with more success and less stress. It’s empowering to have a conversation with our kids about the level of input this plasticity in their brains gives them as learners. We can encourage our kids to celebrate challenges and remind them of the power of intention and visualisations to build the right connections. There is no such thing as “smart” and “dumb” - just different ways of building connections. We can help them know they have the power to build their own smarts. Learning is not about a number on a piece of paper, but a set of connections in the brain for living.

Here’s the truth: education is truly a gift to each “next generation”. However, as parents of teenagers approaching their final school years and those blocks of exams – or those in the thick of it – education doesn’t always feel like a gift (for us or for them!) 

 

How does education look when it is a gift?   

 

Originally published in 2008, the Melbourne Declaration on Educational Goals for Young Australians articulates nationally consistent future directions and aspirations for Australian schooling. Basically, it’s the education system all Australian schooling is based on. It delivers a focus on preparing kids for 21st century living. It’s all about them. The goal of the system is “that all young Australians become successful learners, confident and creative individuals, and active and informed citizens”. 

 

Sounds great for sure. I love the thought of my kids getting this from their education.  

Regardless of what emotion is involved, it will certainly colour how information associated with the notion of science is digested or applied by the person feeling them. Therefore, approaching science as an emotional concept is worth a moment of thought.

OLDER VIEW OF THE LEARNING BRAIN

There is, however, an “Older View” of learning that a lot of us as parents experienced. 

 

Growing up and attending school, we were often classed as “smart or dumb”. We were tested on the basis of a grade rather than testing to improve learning and fear was often used as a primary motivator. We may have even had IQ tests to inform our possible future career choices. We were not taught how to learn. We were taught how to memorise.  

 

Unfortunately, some of our kids are still experiencing aspects of this where the emphasis on comparative scores outweighs the goals of the system. If this is our only experience as parents then we may see this as the norm. 

 

How does this sound when we look at preparing ‘confident and creative individuals, and active and informed citizens”? 

Newer View of the Learning Brain

Current research into how the brain learns best shows there is so much the “learning brain” can tap into. We recognise that at the very core our brains are built for survival. Anything the brain perceives as contributing to that survival is more likely to motivate us to want to learn. And that’s not just about staying safe from lions, tigers or bears – it’s about having a better future.    

 

The Newer View of the Learning Brain shows that the collection of grey and white matter is really interested in “What’s in it for me?”  When it comes to learning and memory, the Future is the best motivator. A positive pull rather than a fearful push. Learning itself, as an activity of seeking out information, can naturally give the learner a reward. This is especially true when there is some novelty involved.  

 

The “Newer View” of learning shows IQ is not fixed. In fact, we can make our own smarts. The Newer View demonstrates the benefits of ‘learning how to learn’ and not simply memorise. Now, we can use this to better inform classrooms and home learning environments.  

 

We can truly be supporting “successful learners, confident and creative individuals and active and informed citizens” 

 

TEACHER AND PARENT

I have over 20 years of experience in education, specialising in Mind Brain Education Science. With this Newer evidence-based view of how the brain learns best, you might think I would find it easy to support my own children in the same way as I have been able to support the kids in my classroom. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the way it went with my first child who did her final exams in the NSW system – the HSC in 2005. Supporting HSC students as a parent is a different ball game to supporting as a teacher. A game most of us don’t know the rules to! 

 

As with a lot of things, hearing something from your own parentcan instantly make any “advice” less valid.   

 

Over the past 10 years, I have been working with how to apply the neuroscience of learning for the classroom to being a better support for my boys, in Years 9 and 11, as a Parent. Trying to resist giving so much “advice” and simply tapping into a shared language that reflects the newer view of the learning brain,and supporting an environment that backs this up.    

 

One thing hasn’t changed since my daughter’s time though. The results of exams are not the be all and end all measure of success. If we focus primarily on numerical scores we push back into the Older View of the learning brain.  However, focusing on the future and how their subject choices support this future we can help improve their numbers by default.   

 

I have had many conversations with fellow parents who just want to be able to help their kids and support them through their later years of school. 

 

So, how can we support them in the last few years of school? How can we foster their confidence and success. How can we help them see education done FOR them not TO them? How can we help them stress less – and by extension, help us as parents stress less? 

 

Firstly, we can be more confident that we can do a really great job of this. After all, learning is what the brain is naturally evolved to do! We all have a natural “knowing” in-built and it’s really powerful. Then, it just becomes a matter of tapping into an understanding of the newer view of learning with our kids. 

 

Using Mind Brain Education Science to Give Meaningful Support

We can use the findings of Mind Brain Education Science to ensure our support is natural and meaningful. First we need to get easy access to these findings and the tools we can use to support them.

As a first step we can try to resist our tendency to provide advice and change just one question we ask our teens each day 

Change “How was school?” to “What was the best class you had at school today”

More than ever, the mention of the seven letters – SCIENCE as support for a point of discussion can bring up some truly gut-wrenching reactions. These reactions can vary greatly depending on the person and their experience, ranging from the glazed look of boredom right through to the energy of rampant heated exchanges, the full range is there.

Regardless of what emotion is involved, it will certainly colour how information associated with the notion of science is digested or applied by the person feeling them. Therefore, approaching science as an emotional concept is worth a moment of thought.

WHAT IS SCIENCE?

What is science anyway? Essentially science is one way of exploring our observations of the world around us. Through our observations and our explanations of these observations, we are able to make predictions about the future which can ,in turn, help us to survive.

Caine and Caine(2010) in their book Natural Learning stated that “Every single human being is born with the ability and desire to make predictions about the world, to test hypothesis, to work things out and to make sense of things.” If you think about it, from the moment we are born we are all undertaking scientific experiments and making predictions every single day! This is just one of the amazing things that our brains can do by default.

SCIENCE AS A PROCESS

Science is a process as well as a continually growing body of knowledge. Science involves explanations that make predictions. These explanations are tested over and over again, the conclusions are not set-in-stone, they must represent the evidence that has been collected in an unbiased manner where variables are closely monitored and controlled.

A quote that really resonates with scientific understanding is that by the Australian National Curriculum, where they state that scientific understanding, “is not rigid at all, but is contestable and is revised, refined and extended as new evidence arises.”

SCIENCE AS A WAY OF COMMUNICATING

Science is about exploration and making observations without emotion. To be honest, the scientific community have not done a great deal to make this clear. Scientists often lack the communication skills to describe what they are doing in a language that is available to everyone and in this way don’t really share how the process of science can enrich us, both as individuals and as a society.

PERCEPTIONS AND ATTITUDES OF SCIENCE

The language that is used in the media around, “truth” and ”proof” This, along with the experiences with test scores in classrooms have given so many a negative perception of science. For many people this perception is that “science is boring,” or, “Science is hard” all the way through to, “Science is dangerous”. A recent CSIRO report states that people’s’ attitudes towards science are generally positive…although this is not generally accepted across the board.

“There have been several significant polls into public attitudes towards science or technology undertaken in Australia over the past few years, which when taken together, provide an increased understanding of the complexity of getting a simple answer to this question” (1)

There are a few studies linked below that look at community attitudes towards science. These studies also give us a good insight into how people’s’ perceptions and attitudes towards have evolved over time as it becomes more accessible.

SCIENCE AS A VALUABLE TOOL

My own personal journey of what it means to me to be a scientist has led me to question whether science is still a valuable tool, even when the community it aims to inform may have little understanding of it. To me, science is such an important tool we have available to allow us to make informed decisions throughout our lives. This is why I believe that communication is the key to understanding here.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, I believe that if we truly understand what science is, and what its goal is, then it doesn’t need to be emotional. We may need to challenge any negative or false perceptions based on our previous experiences with it. If we are willing to question how a conclusion has been made, then science can become an important tool for informed choices in our lives. And once we are open to the nature of the process and the refining it invites, science really can be exciting and fun.
