]]>This Massachusetts chemical grouting project by CJGeo is located in Cambridge. As part of a new, massive underground electrical substation, 150' deep slurry walls were installed around the perimeter of an entire city block. It's fairly common for slurry wall joints to leak. However, before the site could be turned over to Eversource, all the joints in the structure had to be completely dry.

Not fancy, but functional.
Multiple contractors attempted to stop the leaks in the slurry wall joints, using various polyurethane grouts. This was somewhat successful in addressing the largest flows, but was unsuccessful stopping weeping leaks. Two local waterproofing contractors and the mining services arm of a chemical grout manufacturer all worked on the site. After months of ultimately unsuccessful repairs, the site's geotech EOR recommended CJGeo to the general contractor.

CJGeo visited the site to inspect the leaks. It was abundantly clear that polyurethane chemical grout had not worked. The joints were too tight for even very low viscosity polyurethane to uniformly seal. Based on this, CJGeo recommended acrylic grout. Acrylic grout is indistinguishable from water, so is ideal for very tight cracks and joints.
On our first day onsite, CJGeo was able to stop nearly 100VF of leaks in various joints. This was more than all the previous contractors had achieved in more than six months. Due to the extensive construction activities, along with numerous walls, CJGeo deconstructed and palletized a small chemical grouting set up to move around the various basement levels with a pallet jack.

]]>This Wisconsin thermal grouting project by CJGeo is located in Sheboygan. As part of a grid-scale battery storage installation, contractors had to bore transmission lines under multiple railroad tracks. For ampacity management, the trenchless crossing required thermal grout in the bore annulus.

This jack and bore crossing is approximately 250 feet, and 36 inches in diameter. The locally-available aggregate in the ready mix market was not suitable for achieving the specified thermal resistivity requirement.

Site access.
CJGeo performed the thermal grouting using CJTherm TM-5 thermal grout mix. Since locally available material wasn't available, we utilized material manufactured offsite and shipped in. This approach removed all risk and cost of developing a project-specific mix for a low volume placement.
Pressure and temperature were monitored continuously and fed to the cloud. Peak heat of hydration was less than 95°F.

]]>This Illinois polyurethane grouting project is located next to the C-concourse at O'hare. During excavation of a tunneling shaft as part of a stormwater project, the shaft walls failed. This resulted in significant soil loss into the shaft, and substantial surface settlement. The owner directed the shaft contractor to perform remedial grouting before performing pavement restoration.

The shaft failed shortly before the manhole structure inside it was completed. There were significant concerns about the ability of the shaft to tolerate any additional pressure. Therefore, the safest way to proceed was for the contractor to backfill the shaft around the structure prior to performing grouting around the structure.

CJGeo proposed polyurethane compaction grouting using CJGrout 22SHV. 22SHV is a slow, hydro-insensitive void filling foam suitable for filling very large voids without scorching. This was important due to large visible voids outside of the shaft lagging.
Due to layers of recycled asphalt used as backfill, percussion installation of the injection tubing was unlikely. So, CJGeo mobilized a contract drilling contractor who augered through the dense mixed fill layers on top into the target grout zone. They were also able to perform pre & post grout DMT testing. However, post-grout, the layers of recyled asphalt were too dense to penetrate.
CJGeo was onsite for fewer than three days. Because CJGrout 22SHV cures within a few minutes, the customer was able to install the new pavement the following day.

]]>This South Carolina pipe abandonment work by CJGeo was part of Columbia's Lower Kinley Creek project. After installation of a new sewer line, the contractor had to fill 8,350 linear feet of 30" sewer main. Without waste, this is 1,185 cubic yards of flowable fill or other suitable material.

Given the long runs of pipe and high volume, the customer wanted to manage cost & minimize the number of access points. Logistically, traditional flowable fill would have been very difficult given the need to get nearly 150 loads of ready mix flowable fill to fill the pipe.

CJGeo proposed 25lb/cuft CJFill-Ultra Lightweight cellular grout to the general contractor. The relatively few placement points required, along with the cost, were both very attractive alternatives to flowable fill.
CJGeo mobilized a single dry batch cellular grout plant. Over a period of four days onsite, CJGeo generated and pumped nearly 1200 cubic yards of cellular grout. Confirmation of fill for each run was uniform grout venting from the opposite end of placement.

]]>This Georgia pipe abandonment project by CJGeo is located on Old Alabama Rd, in Roswell. It involved installing a new water main that was routed away from GA-19 into a more accessible location. After the new pipe was installed, 5280LF of 48" water main needed to be completely filled.

Cost, speed, and minimizing the number of access points were the most important factors on this project. Access was tricky, due to the adjacent highway, residential areas, and the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area.

CJGeo proposed 30lb/cuft CJFill-Ultra Lightweight cellular grout to the general contractor. The relatively few placement points required, along with the cost, were both very attractive alternatives to flowable fill.
CJGeo mobilized a single dry batch cellular grout plant. Over a period of 7 days onsite, CJGeo generated and pumped 2,328 cubic yards of cellular grout. The large cement pig shown in the photo above was used to address traffic disruptions in the daily supply of dry bulk cement.

]]>This Massachusetts cellular grouting project is located in Cambridge. It is part of a new commercial construction project. SECA Underground microtunneled under the MBTA Red Line tunnel with a 200 foot long, 63" diameter steel casing. Once the casing was in place, they installed four, 18" diameter forcemain pipes and two, 4" diameter pipes in the casing. To ensure long term stability, the design engineer called for the tunnel annulus to be completely grouted.

Managing carrier pipe buoyancy on multi-carrier tunnels can be really tricky. This tunnel had six different carrier pipes, and 3 different spring line elevations. Therefore, using heavy grout in multiple lifts would have been practically impossible. Even if the math all checked out for multiple lifts of heavy grout, with the number of spacers, it would have been very difficult to keep the grout at a uniform elevation in the tunnel without a ton of sacrificial grout pipes.

To solve the carrier pipe buoyancy problem, and design effectively all grouting pressure out of the placement, CJGeo proposed 30lb/cuft CJFill-Ultra Lightweight cellular grout. The grout provides sufficient compressive strength, and at half the density of water, designed all buoyancy concerns out by simply filling the carrier pipes with water.
Using cellular grout on this project took what would be a very risky and time consuming flowable fill grouting adventure and turned it into an effectively risk-free, two hour cellular grout placement.

]]>This Pennsylvania permeation grouting project is one of the rare projects where polyurethane serves as the best permeation grout. Typically, CJGeo perform permeation grouting using water-like grouts, such as acrylate or colloidal silica. This project at a Lehigh Valley distribution center occurred because expansive shale heaved the interior floor up to nearly a foot. To address this, the consulting geotechnical engineer called for grouting a curtain along the exterior of the building through the 57 stone and blasting-disturbed rock along roughly 700 feet of the building.
They also removed all of the affected expansive shale fill inside the building and replaced the floor slab.

Drilling & grouting.
This job presented two primary challenges. From an operations perspective, the grouting work couldn't tie up more than 6 docks at a time. From a functional perspective, the grout needed to be highly mobile, dimensionally-stable, water-proof, and contain as little water as possible.
CJGeo proposed dual-component polyurethane grouting, using CJGrout 20SDB. We recommended 20SDB because of its exceptionally high mobility, even through stone beds and small fissures. It contains no water and effectively blocks even water vapor.

Sonic drilling to facilitate grouting.
While air rotary drilling would have kept all water out of the process, it proved too dirty for the food storage environment. After drilling a few test holes, CJGeo self-performed all drilling using sonic equipment. CJGeo utilized sonic drilling to drill every two feet down to competent rock. The crew socketed the grouting 1.5 feet into the underlying competent rock.
After CJGeo drilled each grouting location, the holes stood open. This stability allowed CJGeo to drop polyurethane grouting tubing down each hole. The team pumped the polyurethane grout continuously on retraction. Widespread cross-hole communication served as the primary cut-off criteria, along with return to the surface.

]]>This Delaware lightweight fill project is located in Wilmington. The work was done as part of the Christina River Bridge project. This project installed a new, multi-modal bridge across the Christina River, near the Blue Rock's baseball field.

Extensive compressible soils comprise the area, requiring the bridge abutment to sit on ground improvement. In order to optimize the ground improvement, the designer called for the use of lightweight fill within the abutment structure. The material had to be as light as possible, but also resist punch through from the ground improvement elements.

Placing the CJFill-UL
CJGeo worked with the contractor to design a lightweight fill plan that utilized two classes of CJFill cellular concrete. 65lb/cuft CJFill-Under Water for the bottom three feet. This was the area subject to potential flood inundation, and poured directly on top of the ground improvement. With an unconfined compressive strength of nearly 1,000 psi, the material behaves as a low density load transfer platform. 25lb/cuft CJFill-Ultra Lightweight was the most appropriate material for the remainder of the fill height.
Due to the relatively low daily placement volumes, CJGeo used wet batch generation to make the material onsite.

]]>This Tennessee polyurethane grouting project is located in Murfreesboro, a suburb of Nashville. As part of supporting Nashville's booming construction market, a large building supplies company built a new million square foot distribution center. They immediately began to experience joint deterioration and thunking noises with fork lift traffic. This was affecting picker tire lifespan, floor lifespan, and wire guidance systems. They reached out to a consulting engineer, who then came on board to evaluate the cause and potential solutions.

This massive distribution center runs 24 hours per day, 6 days per week. It also includes a large robotic order picking operation. The owner's primary concern was ensuring that the repair work did not disrupt their operations. The consulting engineer, who had extensive experience working with CJGeo, called us to take a look.
CJGeo worked with the owner and consultant to confirm that slab curl was the cause of the joint deflection under load. The other cause, which was ruled out, was settlement of underlying soils. Settlement of underlying soils was ruled out due to the pervasiveness of the problem throughout the facility, and slight cupping of the slabs, detectable with very long straight edges.

Typical impact on operations.
CJGeo proposed undersealing the joints using CJGrout 20SDB geotechnical polyurethane. The team chose 20SDB for its specific formulation, which provides very high mobility and minimal lifting capacity. To minimize impact to the facility, CJGeo proposed working at night when operations were slower.
CJGeo mobilized a polyurethane grouting crew to the site in May 2025. The crew drilled nearly 20,000 holes to stabilize about 45,000 linear feet of joint. They completed all work at night over six weeks onsite, resulting in zero operational impacts for the facility.

]]>This North Carolina permeation grouting project is located on I-95 in Lumberton. The area flooded in 2016 as a result of Hurricane Matthew, which washed out the bridge approaches of I-95 over a surface street and railroad tracks. This flooding event, and its extensive damage, kickstarted an extensive reconstruction project for I-95 in the area, focused on expanding capacity and reconstructing areas which had been hastily repaired after the storm.

At the railroad overpass in Lumberton, extensive erosion behind the abutments was addressed with sheet pile installation and backfill with clean 78 stone. This provided sufficient capacity to restore traffic, but as part of the reconstruction work, the civil contractor had to install a 25' tall soil nail wall in the 78 stone. The wall face was within a foot of the edge of pavement. This caused difficulties, in that during staged excavation the 78s would flow out from under the pavement, which was under traffic.
The soil nail wall contractor and general contractor determined that the 78 stone needed to be effectively glued in place to facilitate excavation without raveling, so they reached out to CJGeo.

CJGrout 20SDB returning to surface.
CJGeo collaborated with the general contractor, the soil nail wall contractor, and the geotechnical consultant. Together, we chose CJGrout 20SDB geotechnical polyurethane for the permeation grouting. Standard permeation grouting often uses water-thin grouts like acrylate. However, controlling the mobility of these thin grouts in clean, open-graded stone is very difficult.
At our shop, CJGeo mocked up a fill section of 78 stone. This helped us determine the proper injection spacing to treat a two-foot thick mass of stone with CJGrout 20SDB. Following this mockup, a single grouting crew completed the onsite work in just two days. CJGrout 20SDB cures in minutes, allowing the soil nail wall construction to proceed immediately after grouting.
