Paradoxically, using less water can actually increase total water use.

Wait. What? That’s backwards. It  doesn’t make sense. How could this be possible? 

If you use less water, how can it increase water use ?

Well, its not a pretty picture, but if you have your seat belt fastened – here’s what actually happens when you honestly try to reduce your water use. 

First, you and your neighbors succeed in taking steps to use less water. Then —

1) Developers demand, and are given, all the water you saved – and then some.

Here’s How: In the 1970s the Monterey Peninsula exceeded its water supply by a significant amount potentially getting all Peninsula water used up before our dessicated, rainless summers beganharming residents and forcing Carmel Valley’s Steelhead salmon and Red-legged frogs towards permanent extinction (only officially recognized after decades of official foot-dragging).  

When the 1977 drought occurred, the State Water Resources Control Board imposed rationing on the area and declared a moratorium on new building.

So far, so good. We’re using less water and no more is being given out.

The Monterey Peninsula Water Management District  was  created to protect our  Peninsula from the rampant greed of developers that had put us in the dire situation.  One of the first things they did was create a “Drought Reserve” to put some water away legally (in an unused status) to protect Peninsula residents and the imperiled creatures dependent on the Carmel River when the next inevitable drought occurred.

Now cue the dastardly music.

Well, (no pun intended) soon after, in the 1980s and early 1990s greedy Subdivision Developers went to “our”  District and complained about our “unused” drought reserves. (These drought reserves arose because you and your neighboring Peninsula residents were conserving water better, using less water per person, than anywhere else in California!)

Nevertheless, greedy developers cried “Look at all that water no one is using. We need it for more development.Disgustingly, the newly created Monterey Water Board gave the “unused” water to Peninsula cities and the County (Rubber Stamps or Puppets of the developers).  This permanently increased the number of water connections (8,000 new connections since the 1977 Moratorium, as of 1995 and counting) and water use.

Furthermore, our perpetually corrupt Monterey County along with Cities like Pacific Grove secretly conspire (in the true meaning of the term) with developers in fraudulent water “trading”  shell games so they can get water connections for physical drinking water – that doesn’t exist either physically or legally.

Both of these activities increase the number of water connections. When the immediate threat of drought  goes away – it is no surprise that when water use resumes to excessive levels with all those new connections, it is at a significantly higher level of total water use than before.

One small example: Pacific Grove City claimed that retrofitting their Golf Course with water saving equipment  would result in a 13 acre foot per year water saving from an average use of 68 acre feet. (A football field (about an acre) covered in water 1 foot deep is about 1 acre-foot.) When in fact the their Golf Course water use went UP from 68 to 82 feet of water per year – increasing water use by 14 acre feet a year.

In the meantime (the four years since the water credits were created) the city of Pacific Grove had given away  that fictitious 13 acre feet of saved water to build new houses and Increased water use at the golf course by 14 acre feet. 

This resulted in a net loss of about 27 acre feet of water from the taps of residents and the Carmel River. (1)  

2) Second, Save Water and Your Residential Water Bills go Up !

When you use less water, the Monterey Peninsula for-profit water company (Cal-Am)  complains to their  Bigger Puppets, the Public Utilities Commission (or PUC), that they aren’t selling as much water as they used to  – so they “need” to raise their rates. What !? Outrageously, the PUC has never turned down a rate increase on our Monterey Peninsula – no matter how unreasonable.

But we are not alone. These horrible acts  occur all over our state, and far beyond.  — “Several water agencies in the San Francisco Bay area raised their water rates to compensate for a substantial decline in revenues resulting from reduced water use by their customers [in the 1976 – 1977 drought.]” (2)

3) Responsible Citizens – People who Conserve – GET LESS WATER during Rationing than those who waste water !

Not mad yet? Try this on: The amount of water residential users are allowed during Rationing is based on a percentage of how much each person normally uses. Responsible consumers use a fraction of the water used by a shameless water wasters. Yet those who waste water only have to cut back by the same percentage as those who have been conserving.

Here’s some typical numbers :

Lets say you use 40 gallons a day and  your mean neighbor uses 200 gallons a day. He’s using five (5) times as much water as you.

When rationing kicks in, it requires you both to cut back 50 percent.

So you now only get 20 gallons, but he is only cut back to 100 gallons a day. So during Rationing, that water waster still gets to use 5 times what you are allowed !

So Monterey Peninsula water wasters benefit by getting a higher use limit during rationing than those who conserve.

This shows how water conservation can have its own surprising harmful impacts to the public interest and to you personally. 

There are a couple of ways to prevent some of this gross unfairness. 

First, to actually halt increasing water pumping – a moratorium on new water hookups must accompany any water conservation effort.

Second, a water use limit needs to be used – not a “percentage reduction” as the Monterey Peninsula Water District adopted.

Species Interdependence

The life of every animal and plant depends upon other biota.(1) When one species is removed for human use, other biota, not directly touched and perhaps even unnoticed by humans, can suffer because they depend on that species. Even worse, such damage can cause a second species’ irreversible decline into extinction.

Ecological Interdependence(2)

When an ecosystem service (e.g. soil retaining ground moisture) is lost or weakened it can harm many species.

SEA OTTERS, KELP AND SEA URCHINS

Lets take a look at a simple system involving Sea Otters, Kelp and Sea Urchins. They all depend upon each other. Sea urchins eat kelp, sea otters eat sea urchins, and kelp provides predator protection for sea otters.

KELP LOSS

If we let industry harvest too much kelp, Sea Otters leave or decline in population because they have nowhere to sleep and hide from predators such as sharks and Orcas. They must move to find other protected foraging areas. When Sea Otters leave or decline sea urchins thrive and eat too much kelp and the remaining kelp forest dies.

SEA URCHIN LOSS

If we let industry harvest too many sea urchins, Sea Otters have to find other food and may leave. When Sea Otters leave or decline sea urchins can rebound and destroy a kelp forest preventing sea otters’ return.

SEA OTTER LOSS

If we let sea otters decline sea urchins thrive and can destroy a kelp forest. The California kelp forest was decimated by sea urchins after Southern Sea Otters were hunted to near extinction by 1900.

MONTEREY PINE FOREST ECOSYSTEM INTERDEPENDENCE

For another example, lets look at how woodpeckers, Monterey pine trees bark beetles and pine pitch canker interact.

ANIMALS, PINES & INSECTS

Bark beetles carry the dreaded Pine Pitch Canker. Woodpeckers eat insects which damage trees, including Bark beetles. Woodpeckers depend on dead standing trees for homes mainly because dead trees have softer wood. Woodpeckers can carve a nest cavity much easier in soft, dead wood than in hard live wood.

This means that to minimize Pine Pitch Canker we must not disturb Woodpeckers or their homes – dead standing Monterey pine trees. When all dead standing trees are cut down, woodpeckers leave. When woodpeckers leave, bark beetles abound and kill many trees and spread the Pine Pitch Canker which kills many more trees.

WE ALL DEPEND ON SOILS

Humans cannot dine on rocks or dirt, but plants must. Since essentially everything we eat is either a plant, or an animal which ate plants, it is vital to our survival that we — “Stop treating soil like dirt.” -David Brower

LICHENS

Lichens create the original soils from which plants can grasp nutrients. It is reasonable to say that all terrestrial life owes its existence to lichens.

TREES

Trees, flowers and plants depend on Soil for food (nutrients). Trees also depend on Mycorrhiza fungus to help their roots absorb water.

Fruiting Trees depend on Bees for pollination.

FLOWERS

Forest flowers and plants depend on trees for shade and wind protection as well as soils for nutrients.

BEES

Bees depend on flowering plants and trees for food.

Humans depend upon Bees for not only honey but, for fruit from trees they pollinate.

INSECTS

Birds and Fish eat insects. Widespread eradication of insects would harm bird and fish populations.

FISH

Fish, such as Steelhead trout (Anadramous Salmon) depend on trees to shade and cool their streams so they do not die of overheating.

Freshwater fish, including steelhead, depend on insects for food.

FUNGI & MICRO-ORGANISMS

Decomposers (organisms that break down dead or decaying organisms) depend on dead trees for food. When a Park is “cleaned up” by removing its dead trees, decomposers decline.

Redwoods and other giant trees depend on a tiny Mycorrhiza fungi which help the great trees absorb water and nutrients from the soil. Pesticides can kill the fungi and thus indirectly kill a forest.

WEB ELASTICITY CAN SNAP

All interdependent biosystems have some resilience or elasticity that allows each species to expand and shrink by small amounts without irreversibly destroying the system. However when humans take biota from the system, that ecosystem elasticity is often stretched beyond its limit just like a rubber band pulled too tight or a balloon blown up too much.

HOW CLOSE IS IRREVERSIBILITY ?

A big problem is how we have only the faintest hint of an idea how close the limit of extraction is for any species in an ecosystem web. The only way humans have ever found out how close we are, so far, — is when we have extracted too much. But of course by then it is too late.

A less recognized problem is how the risk of irreversibility is much closer when we remove amounts of two or more interdependent species, rather than just one. Thresholds of irreversibility get even closer, extracting smaller amounts of biota can cause species extirpation, such as when we remove multiple interdependent species such as sea otters and sea urchins, or Monterey pines and woodpeckers.

When a key species is killed it can start an ecological chain reaction that devastates an entire ecosystem.

Note 1: While humans need hundreds of other large species to survive – from plants and animals for food to stomach microbes for digestive health, the only known species dependent upon humans are small to tiny: the smallpox virus (which made it easy to eradicate), gonorrhea, syphilis and head lice.

Note 2: Puzzlingly, as of 2016, no major Biology textbooks include the idea or the term “Interdependence.” I first discovered this extraordinary oversight in 1995, and am bewildered to find it hasn’t changed in 20 years. Could this be a case of circular ignorance? If students aren’t taught about interdependence, then they can’t write about it, or edit properly, for the next generation of textbooks

Have you ever breathed air from another planet?

Or eating vegetables grown in another solar system ?

Of course not. We all (6 billion of us humans) breathe air from the same atmosphere and eat food grown from the same rain. It may take quite a while for them to get distributed around our entire planet, but eventually it all gets mixed together.

So why does nearly everyone, with a tiny few wonderful exceptions, use a horribly misleading term — “the environment” ?

How insulating, how incorrect, how awful !

Unless we’re discussing Astrophysics, we’re never talking about some distant environment on another planet or in another solar system.

It darn well is OUR environment, the only one we’ve got.

If we ruin it, there is no second chance, no backup, no do-overs – no Planet B.

 

Apart from — or A-Part-Of ?

The Environment” indicates something we are separate from or apart from.

Whereas “Our Environment” properly indicates something we are a part of.

When it is explained, most people get it and embrace it, sometimes they just forget to use the correct term.

So when public officials or the media use the misleading term, you have my encouragement to explain the correct usage. 🙂

Some claim that toxic pollution or burning fossil fuels is the most devastating damage humans have done to our earth. Now of course, those are deadly serious problems, but are they the longest lasting harm ?

While burning fossil fuels certainly causes major harms including creating the most deadly cancer causing compound (from diesel engines), after a few tens of thousands of years even the most potent parts of that pollution will have transformed into far less harmful chemicals. And if humans are still around they’ll likely use electric vehicles.

Some poets say love is forever. It may feel that way.

However, genuine forever-ness is the loss of an endangered species; not unlike the permanent loss we realize when one of our parents dies.

Americans murdered the last Passenger Pigeon just before the first World War — due to hunting and massive deforestation of their habitat. That very social bird once formed a flock some 300 miles long and a mile wide that took an estimated at 3-5 billion birds 14 hours to pass by.

Their extinction is wholly Non-reversible.

Passenger Pigeons are never coming back.

Locally, facing true forever-ness are our endearing neighbors the

adorable Sea Otters,

magnificently graceful Condors,

amusing California Red-Legged Frogs (I sometimes “accidentally” call them Carmel Valley red-necked frogs) and the

adventurous Southern Steelhead.

Extinction, is clearly the most devastating damage Americans have wrought, and our local politicians are hell bent on causing even more.

California Red-legged Frog (Rana Aurora Draytonii)

Mark Twain first found fame for writing an account of a jumping frog contest in Calaveras County. While the story may be apocryphal, the “Celebrated Frogs” of Mark Twain’s article, the California red-legged frogs, as the largest native frogs in the Gold Rush Country of California’s Western Sierras at that time, were likely the contestants in the event the gave birth to the tale.(1)

The California Red-Legged Frog (“CRLF”) becameFederally listed as a Threatened species on May 23, 1996 (61 Federal Register 25813). Monterey County is roughly in the middle of the range of this species.

This native California frog is now gone from the Sierras, including Calaveras County, but it still hangs on in a very few places. One of those few places is at Rancho San Carlos in Carmel Valley. When these frogs were listed as an imperiled species, the federal experts made it clear that Rancho San Carlos is one of only three places left in the world where significant populations of Mark Twain’s frogs still live.

(From the Federal Register for Thursday, May 23, 1996) —

“Only three areas within the entire historic range of the California red-legged frog may currently support more than 350 adults, Pescardero Marsh Nature Preserve (San Mateo County), Point Reyes National Seashore (Marin County), and Rancho San Carlos (Monterey County). The San Francisco Airport drainage location, identified in the proposed rule as containing over 350 individuals, is now thought to be nearly extirpated. Threats, such as expansion of exotic predators, proposed residential development, and water storage projects, occur in the majority of drainages known to support California red-legged frogs.”

The CRLF US Fish & Wildlife Final Recovery Plan for the California Red-Legged Frog was signed May 28, 2002. The Plan designates all 255 square miles within the Carmel River Watershed as core area for recovery!

Independently, all 255 square miles of the Carmel River watershed was designated as “Critical Habitat” by federal ecologists at US-Fish & Wildlife Service in 2000. This designation has been temporarily suspended by a federal Judge because the FWS failed to prepare an adequate economic analysis. FWS’s ecological evaluation of the critical habitat areas will not change.

The frog can inhabit any aquatic area in its range. When storms arrive, unlike its main predator, the invasive Bullfrog, the red-legged frog can and does leave the river (up to 2 miles from their aquatic home). The dim-witted Bullfrogs get washed downstream into the ocean and often drowned while the native red-legged frog sits high and well – maybe not exactly dry, but safely out of the swift flowing rivers and streams.

The US-Fish & Wildlife states —

“This species is the largest native frog in the western United States, ranging from 1.5 to 5.1 inches in length. The abdomen and hind legs of adults are largely red; the back is characterized by small black flecks and larger irregular dark blotches with indistinct outlines on a brown, gray, olive, or reddish background color. Dorsal spots usually have light centers, and dorsolateral folds are prominent on the back. Tadpoles range from 0.6 to 3.1 inches in length, and are dark brown and yellow with dark spots.

California red-legged frogs spend most of their lives in and near sheltered backwaters of ponds, Marshes, springs, streams, and reservoirs. Deep pools with dense stands of overhanging willows and an intermixed fringe of cattails are considered optimal habitat. California red-legged frog eggs, larvae, transformed juveniles, and adults also have been found in ephemeral creeks and drainages and in ponds that do not have riparian vegetation. Accessibility to sheltering habitat is essential for the survival of California red-legged frogs within a watershed, and can be a factor limiting population numbers and distribution.

Adventurous Traveling Frogs

“Individual California red-legged frogs are known to move long distances over land (up to 2 miles) between water sources during winter rains.”

Breeding

California red-legged frogs breed from November through March with earlier breeding records Occurring in southern localities. California red-legged frogs are often prolific breeders, typically laying their eggs during or shortly after large rainfall events in late winter and early spring. Embryos hatch 6 to 14 days after fertilization, and larvae require 3.5 to 7 months to attain metamorphosis.

Larvae probably experience the highest mortality rates of all life stages, with less than one percent of eggs laid reaching metamorphosis. Sexual maturity normally is reached at three to four years of age; California red-legged frogs may live eight to ten years. Juvenile frogs have been observed to be active Diurnally and nocturnally, whereas adult frogs are mainly nocturnal.

Diet

The diet of California red-legged frogs is highly variable. Invertebrates are the most common food items, although vertebrates such as Pacific tree frogs and California mice can constitute over half of the prey mass eaten by larger frogs. Larvae likely eat algae.

Threatened

The California red-legged frog has been extirpated or nearly extirpated from 70 percent of its former range. Historically, this species was found throughout the Central Valley and Sierra Nevada foothills.

At present, California red-legged frogs are known to occur in 243 streams or drainages from 22 Counties, primarily in central coastal California. The most secure aggregations of California red-legged frogs are found in aquatic sites that support substantial riparian and aquatic vegetation and lack non-native predators.

Over-harvesting (for San Francisco restaurants),
habitat loss (due to agriculture and development),
non-native species introduction (bullfrogs), and
urban encroachment are the primary factors that have negatively affected the California red-legged frog throughout its range.

Ongoing causes of decline include
direct habitat loss due to stream alteration and disturbance to wetland areas,
indirect effects of expanding urbanization, and
competition or predation from non-native species.

“Risk Assessment” is Fraud. It  is actually a highly disguised political choice to commit deadly harm.

It actually answers the perverse question “How can I get away with all the environmental and human damage my project will cause?” – though it is never stated so clearly.

Those wanting to do big projects that cause real harm have to disguise it because public opinion strongly opposes serious harms to people and our environment.

A method that superficially appears scientifically credible is called “Risk Assessment.” This thousand word article will show you why Risk Assessment is rarely credible and what to insist upon instead.

Imagine for a moment you are a developer, a resources extractor, a polluter or a government agency (DREG) that wants to do a project that causes a lot of harm to our environment or to people.

The first thing you do is hire a Biostitute (an academic or professional committing fraud for money) to write a report for you with the secret contract requirement or understanding that the report says all your project’s risks are “acceptable.” Since you are paying them, Biostitutes would have to be pretty dumb to give you a report that admitted your project would cause serious harm. Who would ever hire them in the future ?

So a Biostitute’s report always defends and justifies environmentally harmful activities by overflowing with meaningless pseudo-scientific bureaucratic doublespeak and jargon ornamented with often irrelevant meaningless mathematics all wrapped up in a laundry list of logical fallacies.

Judges rarely understand environmental assessments due to the lavish insider jargon, or complex statistical analyses, but generally are pressured to accept them as though they were reasonable and valid – even when they are outrageously bogus. (“Well, its got lots of pages and math in it, and it was written by an “expert” so it must be ok …”)

Most (if not all) risk assessments are based on selective information, arbitrary assumptions and enormous uncertainties. Risk Assessments often admit not calculating for the most vulnerable people or real threats to imperiled species.1(O’Brien 2000)

For example, US-EPA has been fighting for years against admitting the numerous known different deadly harms of pesticides to endangered species. EPA has lost huge lawsuits yet still fights against admitting the pesticide harm. They avoid discussing it, then when forced to analyze a harm, they disguise the harms as described above.

Who Decides for You?

A valid risk assessment is when you decide for yourself how much health or safety risk you are willing to accept, presumably in exchange for some benefit. For example: if you decide to make a parachute jump or buy life insurance you make that sort of decision. That’s a valid risk assessment.

An outrageously wrong “risk assessment” is when government or a corporation decides for you how much of your health risk they are willing to accept.

No democracy-based government has a Right to Kill You or even let you die negligently without Due Process. But that’s not what DREGs believe – because you are getting in the way of their profits – or job promotion.

An example of how wrong this can get is how in 2007, faceless bureaucrats in the US-EPA, US Dept. Agriculture, California Dept. Food and Agriculture and California Dept. Pesticide Regulation (CDFA) all approved the aerial spraying of secret, untested pesticides on the cities of Monterey Bay area including Pacific Grove, Santa Cruz, Monterey, Seaside, Marina and Carmel.

The California state bureaucrats arrogantly fought having the public decide they didn’t want to be sprayed. Even after 23 cities including San Francisco and Monterey officially opposed the spraying — CDFA spokesman Steve Lyle sneered publicly “You don’t get to vote.”

License to Kill

Because Risk Assessment explicitly authorizes activities which kill innocent people (“only one cancer (death) per million people”) it is disparagingly and accurately referred to as a “License to Kill.”

Agencies that do this all the time include the US-EPA (aka Environmental Protection by Autopsy) —

Generally, EPA is concerned when cancer risk estimates exceed 1×10-6 or one-in-one million (US-EPA Reregistration Eligibility Decision for Thiophanate-Methyl)

the Food and Drug Admin(FDA), CDPR (California Pesticide Approvals), OEHHA (California Toxics Health Assessment).(1) US-EPA does this every time they approve the use of a pesticide. EPA actually decides that if a pesticide is calculated to not kill more than one person per million exposed to it – that one dead  person is an “acceptable risk” to them.

What they hope you don’t figure out (they are trying to obscure) is that put another way, this means that the US-EPA is willing to have 1 person die for every million people exposed to an intentionally deadly chemical.

The number of Americans at risk of dying from industrial chemicals was not always so high. For a short while the risk number was 1 person per 100 million. That’s less, but still an outrageous concept.

1 chance in 100 million of developing cancer was put forward as safe. This figure was adopted by the Food and Drug Administration in 1973, but amended to one in a million in 1977 (Kelly and Cardon 1994). This level of 10–6 has been seen as something of a gold standard ever since. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) typically uses a target reference risk range of 10–4 to 10–6 for carcinogens in drinking water…”

Risk Assessment is inherently wrong, morally, ethically and sometimes even legally when Judges understand how it really works. Someday courts will soundly throw it out for good just as they have rejected Flat Earth arguments. Lets hope it is soon.

So what do we do instead?

Alternative Analysis is the genuine examination of many different methods of achieving the same goals and to avoid or minimize environmental damage.

For example, instead of using poisonous persistent pesticides to kill weeds in your sidewalk – you can use a steam-wand that only uses hot water.

Alternatives are often better in every respect than the original concept. Well not in every respect, they do typically reduce profits of toxin manufacturers.

Pesticides are deadly poisons.

Pesticides are explicitly Intended to Kill,

Designed to Kill,

Manufactured to Kill,

Used and Applied – Explicitly to Kill.

Period.

Pesticides have been intentionally applied abundantly to most food we consume in the United States since the late 1940s when man-made chemical pesticides were introduced.Pesticides are not “target specific” as the chemical industry wants us to believe. The truth is  much closer to almost every pesticide has some harmful effect on every form of life: That includes animals, fish, birds, flowers, endangered species – and humans. 

Unfortunately, (so far) deadly pesticides are invisible to consumers. This makes distinguishing dangerous from safe produce and fruit so expensive and time consuming that it is rarely done except by government agencies and public interest groups.

The public was first widely alerted to the danger of toxic food by Rachel Carson’s book Silent Spring. As of 2013 a large and constantly growing number of people take measures to avoid food with any pesticides.

However, the agricultural chemical manufacturers do not just sit back and accept pesticide free food as a valid consumer choice. They quietly and constantly spend millions upon millions of dollars to undermine and deface the government authorized term “organic.” And they have succeeded. Purely for Greed.

Agricultural Chemical Manufacturers are truly Evil.

Three things Wrong with “Organic” Labeling

1. Organic Does NOT mean “Pesticide Free

Today many people who believed they were buying pesticide-free and man-made chemical-free food because it was labeled “Organic,” are shocked to learn that the label ‘Organic’ does NOT mean “Pesticide Free.

The ugly truth is any food may be legally sold as “organic” (under the California Organic Foods Act of 1990) even if it contains as many as 15 prohibited pesticides, each of which can contaminate the food at up to 5 percent of the amount allowed by the Federal EPA (FIFRA) pesticide tolerance level for non-organic foods. (California Health and Safety Code Section 110825.)

These pesticide laden “foods” are legally allowed an “Organic” label. I prefer to call them “Un-Organic.”

2. Foods Sometimes contain Illegal Pesticides Banned as Too Dangerous
It might be even more surprising to learn how some of our food contains illegal pesticides – highly deadly pesticides banned decades ago.

3. Organic Pesticides grown with Non-Organic Fertilizers for Years
Other products are falsely sold as “certified organic” but grown with non-organic chemical fertilizers  for years.

The Salinas/Gonzales based “California Liquid Fertilizer” company sold “organic” fertilizer containing ammonium sulfate, but the farms and products using that chemical were NOT De-Certified by California Dept of Food and Agriculture (CDFA), the US Dept of Agriculture or CCOF (California Certified Organic Farmers). CDFA knew the fertilizer was tainted in 2004 but did not order the product off the market until 2007.

This article is not about finding foods with merely fewer pesticides and chemicals than normal foods, or about improving farming practices, it is about finding food to eat today — which is truly pesticide and chemical free.

In my opinion there are two types of decisions you need to make carefully to avoid eating pesticide poisoned food.

1) Food Species (Strawberries vs. Blackberries), and

2) Food Sources (such as Trader Joe’s, CSAs, farmer’s markets or private farms.)

Food Species:

In general, your Food Species decision will be better informed as it includes both theory and actual data of testing food for pesticides. (See Environmental Working Group’s Annual Report on Food Pesticide Contamination)

I use food species information to decide which foods not to eat. Consequently, I now almost never eat strawberries, spinach, celery, apples, or peaches.

For safe produce, I choose watermelon, broccoli, grapefruit, kiwis, avacadoes and sweet corn.

Environmental Working Group produces an excellent report every year called “The Clean Fifteen™.” It is a list of “the produce least likely to test positive for pesticide residues.

These fruits — domestic cantaloupe, grapefruit, kiwi, mango, pineapple and watermelon — and these vegetables — asparagus, avocado, cabbage, eggplants, mushrooms, onions, frozen peas, sweet corn and sweet potatoes.

Food Sources

In theory a store or market can offer pesticide free, or nearly pesticide free foods.

Unfortunately, food is so rarely tested for pesticides, including so-called “organic” food, the label is only a very rough indicator – with no guarantees. No market that I know of ever regularly tests its foods for pesticide or chemical residues.

Hint for Entrepreneurs: If any market did test their foods, and their foods truly are pesticide-free – it should be a strong selling point.

Food grown on California certified “organic” farms can legally be contaminated by as much as one/twentieth (1/20th) the amount of pesticides allowed on uncertified food that you may find at a ordinary supermarket.

When tested, so-called “organic” foods have about one-third the number (not the amounts) of pesticides as conventional produce. That’s better, but still a long way from pesticide-free.

Testing for Pesticides in Food

The equipment normally used to test for pesticides in food is called a mass spectrometer. This device can only test for one extremely specific pesticide at a time, say DDT. Its is so focused it can not even tell you if the target pesticides’ degradation products are present (such as DDT’s breakdown product DDE).

The good news is there is a new type of test which can examine a broad range of pesticides and degradates, whole families of pesticides in fact. This type of test is called an Immunoassay. It uses biological materials that glow when the pesticides are present. The test only costs about $200 each making them reasonably affordable and comparable to the myopic mass spectrometry. This test is already commonly used in the dioxin industry.

How Do Pesticides Get Into Organic Food?

Organic produce can be polluted by pesticides in soils and by pesticides drifting through the air or seeping through groundwater.

Persistent Pesticides In Soil

Organic crops can be polluted by pesticides in soils. Organic farming laws typically only require soils to have no pesticides applied for three consecutive previous years. But some pesticides, such as Dieldrin, which was banned in 1974, can last in soils for decades. Other pesticides like Atrazine are widespread in the Midwest groundwater and well water where they can be absorbed by crops.

So What Do I Do?

Ask the farmer if you can see their soil testing reports. Clean farmers will want to know the health of their soils and will have had their soil tested for pesticides. Clean farmers will also be proud of the fact that their soils are clean. Read the report to see which persistent pesticides their soils were tested for.

Pesticide Drift

“Organic” farms can also be polluted by pesticide drifting from other properties.

Pesticide drifting 2 to 3 miles is common!

When pesticides are sprayed as a fog (droplets of 5 microns) from a height of only 10 feet it can take them an hour to drop to the ground. In a 3 mile per hour wind (a virtually unnoticeable gentle breeze) pesticides will travel about 3 miles in an hour. EPA typically allows pesticide applications in winds up to 15 miles per hour. This means the EPA is OK with pesticide droplets drifting 15 miles, or more, before they reach the ground. Is your children’s school within 15 miles of a pesticide application – agriculture or a golf course?

Few people realize that pesticides have drifted and damaged crops more than 50 miles from where the poisons were applied.

Think of all the places where pesticides are used within 15 (let alone 50) miles of your home (agriculture, schools, county and state roads, house sale tents – your neighbor’s prize roses).

If pesticides can drift 50 miles and damage crops, it is reasonable to be concerned about  any pesticide use within 50 miles of where your food is grown (or where you breathe).

Do you know which directions are upwind from your home? Have you seen a “Wind Rose” for your area? It graphically depicts the direction and strength of winds in your area. Most meteorologists aren’t even taught this term. It is especially important to know when the majority of pesticides are applied to crops (or highways or golf courses) in your area and what direction the wind is blowing when it is done.

So What Do I Do?

Find produce grown at farms where crops are grown many miles upwind of any pesticide use or in sealed greenhouses. When I asked recently, one fellow at Whole Foods showed me the only produce which they claim is pesticide free – greenhouse grown, hydroponic tomatoes. However, even hydroponic farms often use large doses of man-made chemicals. On the other hand CSAs often choose areas that are well protected from pesticide drift.

Upwind Of Agriculture May Not Be Good Enough

It is important to live and find food grown upwind of agricultural lands.

I live some 15 miles upwind of the 10 million pounds of poisonous pesticides (that’s only the disclosed amount of active ingredients) used on Salinas Valley crops every year. Thankfully the wind almost never blows from the East or Southeast.

But our Peninsula faces other pesticide threats including those used on the six Carmel Valley golf courses, and pesticides sold for home use (to my neighbors and to upwind neighbors of Carmel Valley’s “organic” produce farms). Those can be even deadlier than agricultural pesticides; they have essentially no regulation or oversight and can also drift in the wind and groundwater.

Summary

My personal conclusion is to avoid those foods which have been found to retain the pesticides most deadly to humans. Then to find foods that you can confirm are grown in tested soils or greenhouses and far upwind of agricultural lands using pesticides, highways (Cal-Trans sprays a lot in Monterey County) schools (that’s another frightening story for parents) and cities.

If you buy from a Farmer’s market – take a map and ask them for the exact map location where their crops are grown. Then lookup the National Weather Service website to determine the winds (Wind Rose) in that area. Thankfully, but only required by law in California, your County Agricultural Department has information which can then help you determine which pesticides are used upwind of that land.

How to Make Our World Better:

*** At every opportunity – let every elected official you meet know that Pesticide-Free food laws (as opposed to simply “organic” laws) are way overdue.

While perhaps technically arguable as good enough for the general public, this second example is misleading.

The public is seriously concerned about release and spread of radioactive material as dust, in our air and water and soils. It is my experience they are not as concerned about releases of radiation from radioactive materials which only have a local effect.

Radioactive contamination occurs when physical materials emit radioactive materials or gamma rays. Those emitted particles are Helium4 (Alpha), Electrons (Beta), or Neutrons. All can cause ionization in other materials. What is key is that a solid piece of radioactive material does not spread or transfer contamination. Its only when the radioactive piece is turned into dust that it contaminates air, water and soils.

That’s not entirely true because some radioactive materials can transfer radioactivity called Neutron activiation by emitting Neutrons. Practically though, because those materials are common only during fission (in a nuclear reactor while it is operating (or melting down) and at the moment an atomic bomb explodes) these dangerous materials are only extremely rarely released or spilled.

There are many radioactive materials. You really don’t want to breathe or ingest any of them; some you never even want to get close to.

Mrs. Marie Curie was awarded TWO Nobel prizes for her work discovering and developing fundamental understanding of radioactive materials.
Yet Marie Curie died due to ignorance of the harm of those radioactive materials.
This makes me seriously skeptical about people putting radioactive materials in our bodies with essentially no physics training, that means radiologic doctors and technicians.

While some materials like Plutonium and Cesium continue emitting radioactivity for tens of thousands of years, the radioactivity of other materials dissipates to trivial (background levels) in only a few weeks (e.g. most Iodines). Some materials’ radioactivity (some Plutonium isotopes) vanishes in less than a second.

This means it is critical to know which specific radioactive materials you are dealing with. Fukoshima has leaked Iodine 131 (half life = 8 days) and Cesium 137 (half-life = 30 years).

Because the Iodine dissipates relatively quickly, the the long lasting Cesium is the dangerous material to keep your eyes on. Cesium emits gamma rays – which damage, and even sort of melt, your DNA.

In Japan 2011, some 25,000 people are known dead from the 9.0 earthquake’s tsunami, but so far no one is yet known to have died from the nuclear plant’s radioactivity. (Curiously, I have not yet read a report of anyone dying directly from the earthquake.)

Notes:
Ionizing radiation directly harms your DNA, enough of it will kill you. Lesser amounts can do serious damage.

Ionizing Radiation comes from X-rays, gamma rays and ultraviolet light. It is important because it changes the nature of atoms and molecules by knocking at least one electron out. This gives the atom an electrical charge, and results in a free electron flying around.

Ionizing Radiation does not comes from radio waves, microwaves or visible light because their photons are not strong enough. Their photons are called non-ionizing radiation. (While powerful radio waves can kill you too (think microwave oven), this section is only about Ionizing Radiation.)

The threshold is 318 nanometer wavelength – the energy where Cesium can ionize. (Visible light, Violet, begins with much less energetic photons at about 380 nanometers and extends to Red at about 740 nm.)
