]]>Yep, it’s actually out and ready to roll (or actually, make that ‘hover’, as in ‘hover-bikes’). After seemingly ages in development, the Aftershock expansion for Ion Fury debuted at this weekend’s Realms Deep event held by 3D Realms.
The new adventure itself was brought to life by Voidpoint, and will arrive thanks to the mentioned iconic publisher and Fulqrum Publishing. If you played the original campaign, look for it to pick up from where the main game left off.
That means we’ll find Shelly recovering from the her explosive one-woman war by grabbing a drink. But that respite isn’t long, as future-DC once again erupts in violence.
After the events of Ion Fury, no one deserves a drink more than Shelly Harrison. But when explosions interrupt her time at a local bar, Shelly is pissed off and immediately readies up. Within moments, the fiendish Dr. Hesksel returns to attack NEO DC and Shelly, armed with a bag of guns and a Roadripper quad hover bike donning homing cannons, sets out to defeat the doc once and for all.

While it did take a while to hit, Aftershock should deliver plenty of fresh action for fans. New bosses, power-ups, and three new weapons round out the pack, along with a campaign that loads up with “more than half of the content” of the base game. Yeah, that’s a jumbo expansion right there, and one that kind of sounds more like a full-fledged side-story than an add-on.

]]>If you dig retro games, then you probably already know the name “3D Realms”. The publisher is not only a legendary one across gaming in general, but it’s also extremely active in the modern industry. That’s mainly with retro form factors, and in that zone specifically 3D Realms has produced some absolute winners as of late.
A good number of those will be present at the company’s yearly showcase, Realms Deep. That show will features upcoming titles, some of which are in Early Access as you read this, and a few of which we’ve actually reviewed here at BG. Cultic, Graven, Wrath, Kingpin: Reloaded, Tempest Rising, Phantom Fury, Core Decay, and the expansion to Ion Fury (Aftershock) will all be in attendance.
Past that catalog, there’s also a big change to this year’s Realms Deep, in that “notable developers and partners” will be spotlighted as well. Look for a cavalcade of houses to be represented, with just a few of the notables being Devolver Digital, THQ Nordic, Nightdive Studios, Slipgate Ironworks, and Fulqrum.
Realms Deep 2023 promises to be the biggest edition yet, bringing fans new game reveals, updates on highly-anticipated titles, in-depth interviews and more than a few surprises.
Alongside the digital showcase, fans will be able to play exclusive new demos and access discounted titles through the Steam Sale during the show.

]]>Well no, not yet it isn’t. The Aftershock expansion pack though, is coming up in 2022 for Ion Fury, and update 2.0 is going to get the base title ready for just that occasion.
Not that it’s all maintenance and prep work in this new download. There’s actually a fair deal of new items included, mostly in the way of quality of life stuff.
Quality-of-life changes refine Ion Fury’s campaign. Map bug fixes make levels more pleasurable to navigate. Sleuths can utilize the radar to track down hidden secrets. Each weapon’s ammo reserves now fill up the cross-hair for enhanced battle awareness and an increased focus on staying alive. Players will also be able to earn Ion Fury trading cards on Steam at last, as well as collect items like profile backgrounds and emoticons from the Steam Points Shop.

But wait, there’s more! Ion Fury has also added in some performance tweaks, and a new inventory system. A little more modern than retro, this will allow players to accumulate items and use them at their leisure, instead of instantly upon pickup.
There’s also better integrated gamepad support, fresh level enhancements thanks to the prep for Aftershock, and some rebalancing for the game’s arsenal. The Chain Gun specifically now pushes hero Shelly back when used, and has a higher ammo capacity.
So there you have it, lots to look forward to right now for gamers blasting their way through the main campaign. And stay tuned for even more when Aftershock adds on vehicles, an arrange mode (for the base campaign), and a whole new narrative, when it arrives in 2022.

]]>One of the very best throwback RPS’ in recent years, Ion Fury took the genre back to a simpler time. It pretty perfectly replicated what playing a first-person shooter was like back in the 90s, and there’s a reason. The game was made in Build.
If you don’t know, the Build Engine is the very same one that powered titles like Duke Nukem 3D and the original Shadow Warrior. While it’s the same engine, the developers over at Voidpoint did add in some modern stuff, it was nothing that the engine didn’t support. So this really is a 90s FPS, just one that came out 20+ years on.
And now it and main character Shelly are back in action once again. In another 90s twist, the return isn’t in a sequel, but an expansion pack. Aftershock picks up right where Iron Fury ended.
After defeating Heskel in her previous adventure, Shelly Harrison decides to celebrate at a local bar. When explosions interrupt her tasty beverage, she rushes out to find Heskel in a monstrous flying machine, cackling madly as he rockets away toward a mushroom cloud on the horizon.
Instinctively, she reaches for her Loverboy revolver, cocks it, and searches for the fastest transportation she can find – a sleek and powerful high-speed Hover Bike, armed with Drunken Homing Plasma Missiles. Shelly’s fight against Heskel continues with multiple brand-new zones to explore, new dangerous enemies, new armaments to destroy them with, and some amazing high-speed vehicle combat.

While Aftershock is the main event here, there is more to the expansion than just the new campaign. The pack will also add an “arrange” mode onto the base title.
That sounds like it’ll really bump up that original adventure, as it’s set to add in a bunch of stuff from Aftershock. That’s a list that includes “new enemies, weapons, and more.” So if you already played the original to death, and are still looking for more post-Aftershock, you’ve got it.
There’s no firm release date yet for Aftershock however, though we do know that it’s set to arrive this summer. It’ll also be coming to all versions of Ion Fury, including the PC, Switch, PS4, and Xbox One.

]]>I’m pretty sure this is the second name change for this game. As to why, it’s because “Ion Maiden” Was too close to “Iron Maiden”. Not that that’s specifically mentioned in the press release, but that’s the inference.
Whatever the name though, 3D Realms’ new Duke Nukem successor has a fresh moniker. And you can add to that that it’s still looking as retro-cool as it has in past looks.

Shelly “Bombshell” Harrison finally has a deadly date on her calendar with Dr. Jadus Heskel and his army of cyber-cultists. With signature weapons including her Loverboy revolver and Bowling Bombs, every cyborg she sees is about four seconds away from being nothing but gibs n’ gore.

Looks like it was made in the 90s, no? Well that’s kind of because it was. 3D Realms is using the Build engine for the game, which is the same engine that was used in Duke Nukem 3D. So there’s no wonder why it’s got the authentically classic looks. Just don’t expect it to fully play like it was made in the 90s.
3D Realms says that the game will feature “auto-saves, improved physics and map interactivity, headshots, and widescreen functionality”. As they also point out, that was all stuff that wasn’t around at the time of Duke.
In addition to a digital Steam edition of the game, Ion Fury will also be getting a throwback, box box version. It’ll be packed with goodies too, so if you remember the hey day of the PC FPS, you should dig this.

The price tag for the above is $59.99 USD, though the standard version will cost way less. The digital version is only $19.99 right now, but will jump to $24.99 on July 18th. Also worth noting is that, if you buy now, you can play now. Ion Fury is in Early Access until the official launch on August 15th.
Switch, Xbox One, and PS4 versions will be along at some point too.
