]]>We were honored to welcome our lead guest artist, Mestrando Diguinho, from Brazil, along with special guests Mestranda Yara from Washington, D.C., and Professor Ferrugem from Brazil, whose knowledge, artistry, and energy enriched our entire community.
Our heartfelt thanks also go to our teaching leadership—Mestrando Jabuti, Professoras Iguana, Sereia, Estrela Vésper, Ciranda, and Sucurí—whose dedication helped make this event such a success.
A special congratulations to Professor Soldadinho and Instrutora Toninha for guiding another group of young Capoeiristas through this important milestone. The growth and confidence of our youth are a reflection of your tireless work and dedication.
Congratulations as well to every student who participated, and to everyone who traveled near and far to celebrate with us. Your presence and energy made this year’s Batizado an unforgettable celebration of Capoeira, culture, and community.
As Mestra Márcia Cigarra reflected: “It was an unlimited exchange of experience and a great recognition of our various trajectories with a common denominator: dedication and perseverance. Everyone can get there. Be yourself without comparing yourself to anyone.”
We are already dreaming of the teen/adult Batizado coming this October!

]]>Haven’t heard the big news? ABADÁ-Capoeira San Francisco will perform the halftime show at the Warriors vs. Spurs game at Chase Center! Thank you to everyone who has purchased fundraiser tickets through us (fundraiser ticket sales are now closed.) We’re excited to share this incredible experience with you.
With Chase Center’s 18,000-seat capacity, this performance is an unprecedented opportunity to introduce thousands of people from across the Bay Area to our school and the beauty of capoeira. Some may become future students, families, partners, or supporters.
If you’re joining us, we invite you to wear your ABADÁ-Capoeira San Francisco T-shirt. The stronger our community presence in the stands, the more people will recognize our organization and the more energy and support we’ll send to our performers on the court.
Don’t have a shirt? Stop by the school before the game—we’re happy to loan you one, or you can purchase one to show your ABADÁ pride!
If you reserved a ticket through Eventbrite, you will (if you haven’t already) receive an email with access to your valid Ticketmaster tickets. Your Eventbrite ticket will not grant you entry into Chase Center. If you don’t get this email by the end of Thursday, July 2nd, email Graduada Mineira at shannon@abada.org.

Together, we’re building relationships with schools, youth organizations, and community centers; bringing culturally authentic Afro-Brazilian arts to more communities; increasing awareness of ACSF’s programs; and creating pathways for children and youth to continue their capoeira journey through classes, camps, mentorship, and leadership opportunities.
These efforts are also expanding teaching and performance opportunities for our instructors and artists. This outreach will help strengthen our impact while creating additional employment for our dedicated teaching artists, including our artists-in-residence, Mestrando Jabuti and Professora Iguana, whose work continues to inspire students at our center and in schools across the region.
Whether you enjoy connecting with people, representing ACSF at community events, or helping introduce others to capoeira, we’d love to have you on the team.
Interested in getting involved? Contact Graduada Rainha (Naomi Mahoney) through our WhatsApp group or speak with her after class.

]]>Spring can make things feel possible — a feeling our community has been living this season.
Late March and April were full of reminders of why capoeira matters. We are so proud of the students who traveled to Washington, D.C. to compete in the ABADÁ Capital Games, stepping onto the floor alongside capoeiristas from schools across the country. More than the competition itself, it was the connections made, the friendships deepened, and the visceral reminder that we belong to something far greater than our studio walls.
Closer to home, April took us into local classrooms, where we had the joy of sharing capoeira with young audiences through educational performances. Introducing children to the movement, music, and history of capoeira — and through it, to Afro-Brazilian culture — is work we hold close to our hearts. The energy in those rooms was electric, and we left every performance feeling inspired.
With May here, there’s more ahead. We’re thrilled to be joining San Francisco Carnaval, one of the city’s most beloved celebrations, bringing capoeira to the streets of the Mission District — a neighborhood we’ve called home for over 30 years. We hope you’ll join our contingent, everyone is welcome!
And don’t forget to save the date: our Kids’ Batizado Week arrives in June, and this year is truly special. Our youth will have their own dedicated ceremony, led by the remarkable Mestrando Diguinho, a sought-after teacher visiting us from Brazil. It’s a rare opportunity for your children to train with a master of his caliber, and a meaningful moment of recognition for all the hard work our young capoeiristas have put in. Adult workshops round out the week, so there’s something for everyone.
The roda is calling. Let’s enjoy every moment of this season together.
Warmly, Mestra Márcia Cigarra & Professora Sereia
