From 1 April 2026, eligible households will be able to apply for a £300 payment towards their heating bills.

The scheme is available to homes using both heating oil and Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG).

Where possible, payments will be made directly to fuel suppliers, so qualifying households can place an order for heating fuel without delay.

The scheme is being managed by Advice Direct Scotland (ADS) and is expected to run for up to six months, with potentially two application windows during that time, subject to funding availability.

• Payment will be made directly to your fuel supplier account
• Apply online via Home Heating Advice

Eligibility

To qualify for a payment, you must:

• Be the bill payer in a home heated by oil or LPG
• Live in your main or only home
• Have purchased fuel after 1 April 2026, or plan to order soon
• Not have received an award at the same address in the last 3 months

Automatic approval applies if you are in receipt of a means-tested low-income benefit, such as:

• Universal Credit (including Scottish Child Payment)
• Housing Benefit
• Income Support
• Income-based Job Seekers Allowance
• Income-based Employment Support Allowance
• Pension Credit

Discretionary support may be considered if you do not receive a low-income benefit, but are in financial hardship and at risk of self-rationing. Examples include:

• Need for heat due to health, age (under 5 or over 75), disability, chronic illness, mental health, recent hospital stay, or end-of-life care
• Rural or remote location
• Other vulnerabilities such as debt, waiting for a benefit decision or appeal, a major life event, or a recent bereavement

Carnegie Fuels will ensure any payment received is correctly applied to your account, either for a new order or to clear an existing balance.

As more information is announced by the Scottish Government, we will make sure our customers are kept informed.

In this blog, we’ve put together a handy guide with some useful tips on how you can try to protect your home from heating oil theft.

Items that need to be considered –

1. Type of tank you have
2. Location & surroundings of your tank
3. CCTV & Security Lighting
4. Tank Monitoring Alarms
5. Tank Padlocks
6. Anti Theft Marker Dye

Let’s look at these in a little more detail…

#1 What type of tank do you have?

A steel tank is probably the most robust form of oil storage and not quite as easily syphoned with a drill as a plastic tank would be.

However, they are substantially more expensive.

#2 Location of your tank

Some properties are lucky enough to have a boiler house, shed or some other form of outbuilding where an oil tank can be situated. Obviously, will be much easier to keep the oil secure if the tank is in a locked building.

It is not always possible to house an oil tank indoors and the majority are probably in gardens but there are steps you can take to help with security outdoors.

Where possible, position the tank in a spot that is visible from your home but not visible from a public road. This will hopefully reduce the risk of potential thieves ‘spying’ an opportunity in the passing.

Use fencing, shrubs & hedging (any ‘thorny’ variety is especially good – just don’t forget to leave a safe space for your delivery driver to get by! ) to obscure and disguise an oil tank.

Use gravel on the ground surrounding and on paths leading up to the oil tank so any activity in the vicinity can be heard.

#3 CCTV & Security Lighting

CCTV and Security Lighting has become much more affordable and there are a variety of options available nowadays.

#4 Tank Monitoring Alarms

We can provide and install a watchman Alarm monitor that will detect a sudden drop in the level of oil in your tank and sound an alarm at the receiver in your home to alert you.

However, care must be advised when dealing with a theft in progress and we would urge anyone to call 999 rather than attempt to stop the theft single handedly.

#5 Tank Padlocks

There is a vast variety of padlocks on the market and this is probably what most people think would be the most obvious and quickest way to secure an oil tank.

However, in reality, most thieves who are looking to steal fuel will come equipped with tools to remove any padlock or they will drill a whole directly into your tank to syphon out the fuel. Therefore, a padlock may deter an ‘honest’ thief but is likely to be completely ineffective to the more organised, ‘tooled up’ robber!

#6 New Anti-Theft Marker Dye

There is currently a new product on the market, which we can supply, that changes the colour of fuel in your tank so if it is stolen, it can be identified if it is recovered from a potential thief.

However, at present, this is only available for white diesel. We are keeping an eye out for anything similar that becomes available for kerosene heating oil.

In summary: deterring heating oil theft

While the things listed may act as a deterrent to heating oil thefts, sadly, most of these crimes are organised and executed by ‘professional’ criminals.

If you suspect you have been a victim of heating oil theft, call 101 to report at your earliest opportunity or 999 if the act is in progress.

With oil prices currently very high, filling your heating oil tank has become a costly expense.

We understand how important it is to ensure we give you the best price possible and while we can’t always promise to be the cheapest, we can promise to be transparent and fair at all times and as one of our loyal customers, we can promise to always give you a privileged second to none service – especially in difficult times of fuel shortages or inclement weather.

Again, we constantly hear horror stories of people who have been consistently overcharged  – mostly by the larger, corporate, national fuel suppliers who ‘rob Peter to pay Paul’ and will give one customer an exceptionally low price and to make up for it will give the next customer an exceptionally high price. It predominately seems to be the long standing, loyal customers who don’t ask the price who are being given the extortionate prices. We are not talking a difference of 2 or 3p per litre, more like 10-15ppl more and in some cases we have heard of 20p per litre higher than the current market prices. Now while this may not bother you if you are one of the customers receiving the cheaper prices but this is neither fair nor honest and it is something we will never do. Our integrity is worth much more to us and we believe in treating others as we would wish to be treated.

What is the smallest amount of oil I can order?
Our minimum oil delivery is 500 litres. Most domestic tanks are between 1000 litre & 1500 litre capacity.

Is it cheaper to order a larger quantity?
Yes. The pence per litre (unit price) will be cheaper the more you order.

Will you top-up my tank if I order online?
Sorry, we can only accept orders online for specific quantities. If you need the tank topped up, please call our office on 01356 648 648 – we can process your order for the maximum amount you think your tank will hold and your card payment will be pre-authorised to this affect. The card payment will not be fully processed until the delivery is made so you will only pay for the exact amount of litres delivered.

If I cannot take the amount of oil that I ordered, will I be refunded?
If payment is taken at the time of order then your credit/debit card will only be processed for the exact amount to pay for the exact amount of litres delivered. If your payment was made via bank transfer or other payment method before delivery has been made, we can arrange for any monies owed to be refunded.

Do you charge credit card fees?
No. We do not charge fees for paying by credit or debit card.

Do I need to be home when you make my delivery?
No – as long as there is unrestricted access to your tank you do not need to be present.

How do I know how much fuel has been delivered into my tank?
Our driver will leave a delivery ticket which shows the metered amount into your tank.

How do I pay for my delivery?
By credit/debit card or Monthly Payment Plan – more info …

What is the VAT charged on Domestic Heating Oil?
The VAT rate is 5% for all domestic heating oil customers.

Can I pay for my fuel in monthly instalments?

I have run out of fuel, how soon can I get a delivery?
We aim for a 1-2 day delivery as standard. However, if you have completely run dry of oil, please alert us at the time of ordering and we will do our utmost to get a delivery to you SAME DAY if we possibly can! You can also place an order online before 3pm for GUARANTEED NEXT DAY delivery.

I am not in any rush, are there any savings to be made?

Yes, we have several options on our online ordering for Next Day, 3 Day & 7 Day. If you are not in any hurry, you can opt for the 7 day delivery window which will allow us to gather and deliver several orders in your area which will reduce our delivery costs and therefore allow us to reduce the price per litre that you pay.  

Why should I call you when I have checked for the cheapest price on a comparison website ?

The domestic heating oil market can be complex and many people find it difficult to know where to start when looking for the best deal. A quick internet search will take you to a number of ‘comparison’ websites which promise you the lowest price on your heating oil. In reality, not all fuel suppliers quotes will be included in these comparisons and you may find that the price is quite often as cheap, if not cheaper, if you call your local supplier direct. Do you service oil boilers and cookers?
Unfortunately we do not have our own service engineers at the moment

Do you supply and fit plastic oil tanks?
We supply a full range of Kingspan Titan Tanks which we can place in situ to be fitted by an OFTEC registered plumber

Do you have small vehicles for difficult access?
Yes. We have smaller vehicles for delivering home heating oil with tight or difficult access. Please call to discuss on 01356 648 648.

What
are your office hours?
The office is open from 8.00am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday and Saturday morning 8.00am to 12 noon. However, the telephone is transferred to an Out of Hours Service and answered until 8pm weekdays and from 12 – 5pm Saturdays & 10am – 4pm Sundays. There is only one telephone line during OOH so please do keep trying if your call is unsuccessful first time, or you can of course leave a message. Alternatively, you can place an order online or send an email

Do you accept cheques?
We do still accept cheques in certain circumstances although this is not our preferred payment method.

Is home heating oil cheaper in the summer?
Not necessarily as the price is governed by crude oil prices which can vary depending on various worldwide factors. If crude oil prices are higher in the summer then home heating oil prices will also be higher. However, as you would expect, demand in winter can also impact on the price

We are all different

No two people are the same so what works for one person, won’t necessarily work for someone else and what one person finds enjoyable might be the next persons worst nightmare. We have taken a selection of ideas from the people in our office of the best advice they can offer to ‘Survive Christmas’ – hopefully you find something that you can relate to.

“Eat & drink what you like without guilt” – there is plenty of time to make up for the excesses in January! There is always so much delicious food on offer at this time of year and it is so difficult to resist. A little bit of everything in moderation will do you no harm. If you can’t help but feel guilty, follow Gillian’s tip below.

#2 Gillian suggests

“Get some exercise” – now this does NOT have to be a full on gym session every day! Maybe wrap up warm and get outdoors for a gentle stroll with a friend or take the dog for a walk. The fresh air always helps lift a mood. If you can’t get out, turn the music up high and have a little dance! It all counts

“Watch a feel good film” –  there are always loads of Christmas movies on!

“ Get away from it all” – whether it’s actually going away for the Christmas/New Year period or planning a break for 2022, there is no doubt that a holiday or break away can give you something to look forward to. We may not all be comfortable with international travel as yet but there are lots of lovely places to go on a ‘staycation’ too.

#4 Rosie’s tip  

“ Don’t stress over the small stuff” – at the end of the day, does it really matter if you burn the sprouts?! There is always plenty to eat anyway. If you have forgotten to move ‘the EIf’ before the little ones get up – tell them that Daddy/the dog was awake through the night so poor Elfie couldn’t move as they can only move when everyone is sleeping! If you forget to send a card/gift to someone – send them a message or email a voucher instead – there are plenty of vouchers available online right up to the last minute – or forget the card/gift and arrange a get together in the New Year. Your presence is more important than your presents!

#5 Ryan’s advice

“Don’t forget to smile & have a laugh!” – Do something that makes you happy! This can be anything at all that you enjoy. Whether that be getting together with family/friends or spending time doing a hobby. Or even something as simple as having a nice coffee or listening to music with a glass of whiskey. It could be volunteering or doing something nice for someone else. Only you know what makes you happy!

#6 Kevin says

“Don’t overspend if you can’t afford it” – It is so difficult to not get caught up in the whole ‘commercial’ Christmas – all the TV adverts & programmes showing the perfect family with the perfect dinner and the perfectly wrapped presents – but that all costs money and a lot of money at that! And let’s also not forget that not one of us is ‘perfect’ and what is portrayed on TV/social media is not always reality. Your family & friends won’t care about expensive gifts or fancy dinners. Just enjoy a couple of days off spending time together.

Of course, not all families enjoy spending time together and sometimes this time of year can highlight existing tensions & strained relationships. Think about what would make it easier for you and try to make a plan in advance. Maybe you could limit the time spent in certain situations or ask another family member or friend to mediate beforehand to prevent any unwelcome confrontations.

Thrills and activities for all ages

Lochter Activity Centre, Oldmeldrum

Lochter, near Oldmeldrum, is one of the go-to places in Aberdeenshire if you are looking to really tire out excited kids. 

With everything from clay pigeon shooting, rifle ranges, and archery, to raft building, go karting and digger driving, there is likely to be something for everyone regardless of age or levels of daring.

As well as the activities, there is also a great restaurant on-site utilising the best local produce sure to fill up hungry tummies before heading back out for more fun.

Lecht 2090, Strathdon

The Lecht is one of Scotland’s best-known winter sports venue, but in the summer months it becomes a mecca for mountain biking. 

Two trails operate during the summer, the Blue Hare and the Red Fox with bikers ferried ​​700ft up the side of the hill on a 3 person chairlift to let you experience the thrill of gravity before you make your way back to the bottom on two wheels.

Both of the Lecht’s MTB trails have been designed by leading trail builder Peter Laing, renowned for his work at Glentress, and are described as mountain cross. In other words – fast, fun, downhill trails that are suitable for those who love quick descents but wouldn’t venture on to a traditional downhill course.

Chairlift passes cost around £20 for an adult half day, with discounts for children and other concessions.

To make a real day of it, (relatively) nearby Aboyne Bike Park and Pitfichie Forest also offer trails for all abilities.

Deeside Gliding Club, Aboyne

Maybe you would prefer to see the views of the Grampians and Cairngorms from above, rather than trekking through them. 

Taking a flight in a glider, soaking up the views and enjoying the serenity might be a dream for some, and the unique climate of western Aberdeenshire is ideal for soaring.

Deeside Gliding Club near Aboyne offers trial flights where your glider will be towed to various altitudes by a powered aeroplane before you are left to soar in the clouds and land back at the field with an experienced pilot at the helm.

Children as young as 14 can take to the skies, so it really can be a family affair, however there are some health criteria you must meet before you can participate.

Museums and attractions

Peterhead Prison Museum

The former Peterhead Prison was once known as the ‘hate factory’ and was famously the site of riots, protests with a guard being held hostage on the roof, before it, and HMP Aberdeen, were eventually closed and replaced with the neighbouring HMP Grampian in 2014.

The Victorian-era building now houses a museum telling the history of the prison and the tasks undertaken by prisoners sentenced to “hard labour” on the tough and unforgiving Buchan coast.

The museum also highlights the work of the brave personnel that served there between 1888-2013, you will visually see what “real” prison life was like, whilst listening to the officers speak of their experiences as part of the audio tour that accompanies your tour, and your sense of smell will be stimulated as you enter the laundry, shower block and hospital areas’.

Grampian Transport Museum, Alford

One of the most well-known visitor attractions in Aberdeenshire, Grampian Transport Museum in Alford is home to countless exhibits telling the roadgoing story of the North-east, from steam-powered tractors, to massive snow ploughs, emergency vehicles and even a four-wheeled orange…

As well as permanent exhibits, owners of classic or rare cars entrust the museum to look after their vehicles and display them to the public as well as bringing in travelling exhibitions such as Formula 1 cars and a collection of vehicles owned by TV’s Guy Martin.

The museum also has its own race track which hosts enthusiasts events throughout the season and, thanks to special funding, its Junior Driving School is free of charge this year. Entry also allows access to the cafe and gift shop, with access to the Bus Collection at Alford (a separate entity on the same site) available on request.

Dunnottar Castle, Stonehaven

Looming over the town of Stonehaven, Dunnottar Castle is a monument with global appeal, drawing visitors from all over the globe. Throughout the summer the castle itself is open to visitors, but arguably the best of the views come from the cliffs looking over it.

The main car park is a short walk from the castle, but those looking to work up more of a sweat can make the half-hour walk from Stonehaven Harbour, along the clifftops past the War Memorial to Dunnottar, however be aware that it is not well suited to wheelchairs and buggies.

A tour of the castle will tell its story from a Pictish fort, links to William Wallace and Mary, Queen of Scots, to being saved from ruin in the early 20th century, as well as its pivotal role in defending Scotland from invaders of all origins.

The castle is open until the end of September, with visitors required to pre-book a slot due to Covid-19.

Play parks, walks and family fun

Stonehaven Open Air Pool

One of only two heated open air pools in Scotland, Stonehaven’s lido is one of the jewels in the crown of the seaside town drawing visitors from far and wide.

Open from the end of May to early September, the pool is suitable for all ages, with inflatables for younger swimmers and lanes for those serious about getting some miles in.

Also on site is a paddling pool for little ones and a cafe serving hot and cold treats to keep you going inbetween blowing off steam in the pool and a full timetable of activities is available on the website.

The Den and The Glen, Maryculter, Aberdeen

Arguably one of the most well-known and loved attractions for families in and around Aberdeen, The Den and The Glen comprises the original The Glen (formerly known as Storybook Glen) and The Den, a large soft-play centre with a vibrant cafe with activities for all ages.

The Glen features statues depicting characters from stories and fairy tales ranging from classics such as the Three Little Pigs, Little Miss Muffet and Cinderella, to more modern favourites like Shrek, The Simpsons, and Peppa Pig. There’s even some real life farm animals to say hello to!

There is so much to see and explore at the Glen, you can easily while away an hour or two before needing to refuel. Thankfully entry to the Glen includes entry to the Den and its cafe (note that this does not apply the other way round) meaning the kids can blow off more steam while you relax.

Drum Castle Estate, Drumoak

While Drum Castle itself is lovely, we know that wandering through an old castle rarely ends well with young kids, however Drum Castle’s estate has so much to offer you can easily spend a morning there without setting foot in the castle proper.

With forest walks of varying lengths, stunning gardens, and a fantastic play area, there is loads to keep all the family occupied. 

The estate also has a small tea room (currently outdoors due to Covid), however there is loads of green space and benches to enjoy a picnic, or the popular Mains of Drum Garden Centre and Restaurant is just two minutes away.

It’s not exactly a commonly used acronym in the consumer world, but you’ll be pleased to know our membership gives you peace of mind that we provide a high quality of service.   

While the mains gas market is monitored by regulator, Ofgem, its remit does not extend to liquid fuels such as heating oil and LPG. That’s where the UKIFDA (UK and Ireland Fuel Distributors Association) can help. It is the body responsible for representing fuel distributors like ourselves but also for supporting consumers who rely on us and our products to heat their home.

In this blog we are going to look at what the UKIFDA can help with and what it can’t, as well as other advice and support available to liquid fuel customers in Scotland.

What is the UKIFDA?

At its core, the UKIFDA is a trade body looking out for the interests of fuel distributors, however, its remit goes much deeper than simply helping businesses. 

While it actively lobbies governments to move forward on areas such as alternative biofuels and shared expertise on liquid fuels, the UKIFDA also sets the standard for fuel suppliers to operate to, ensuring a continued quality level of service for consumers.

This includes inspecting fuel depots and certifying them with one of four award levels: Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze as well as monitoring the quality of fuels sold by the distributor. Using laboratory testing to check levels of water, particulate and microbial contamination while promoting proper maintenance of distribution tanks and systems.

How can the UKIFDA support consumers?

There are a number of ways the UKIFDA can support fuel consumers including providing help and advice on using energy efficiently, applying for grants and funding, and upgrading your heating system and controls.

All UKIFDA members are governed by a Customer Charter which outlines how consumers should expect to be treated by their supplier and the level of service they should expect to receive.

Angus isn’t always famed for its sunny weather, however we’ve come up with a list that will keep the kids entertained without resorting to tablets, telly or video games whatever the season!  From farms and castles, to playgrounds and activity centres.

Whether you are visiting the area for the first time or live here we’ll sure you’ll find something that will take your fancy! 

Things to do in Angus: Castles and Attractions

Glamis Castle, Glamis

Glamis Castle is located just outside Forfar within the village of Glamis and is fondly referred to as the country’s most beautiful Castle. Their expert guides will help you follow in the footsteps of Mary, Queen of Scots, James V, Bonnie Dundee, the Old Jacobite Pretender to the throne James VIII, the ill-fated Janet Douglas and of course tell the story of the bitter-sweet life of Mary Eleanor Bowes.

As well as the Castle they run a host of events in their grounds including:

• Open Cinema Events
• Scottish Transport Extravaganza
• Glamis Country Fair

Their gardens are well famed for their walks and you’ll not be short of space for the kids to run off some steam! 

House of Dun

The House of Dun can make a great day out, with a free park and lots of nature trails you can spend the whole day exploring here and only pay for parking! If you want to explore the Georgian House though which has been beautifully restored to its period along with the manicured walled gardens then you must pay a small entrance fee. Thirsty? The home also has a small, family friendly café.

Dunninald Castle and Gardens

Dunninald Castle and Gardens is situated just outside Montrose and offers guided tours through the summer months which leads you through the history of the building and of the family who lived there. The walled garden is the perfect place to explore along with the woods, which are carpeted with flowers from May through to Summer.

Arbroath Abbey

The Abbey, which was the richest in Scotland, is most famous for its association with the 1320 Declaration of Scottish Independence believed to have been drafted by Abbot Bernard, who was the Chancellor of Scotland under King Robert I.

The Abbey fell into ruin after the Reformation. From 1590 onward, its stones were raided for buildings in the town of Arbroath. This continued until 1815 when steps were taken to preserve the remaining ruins.

Pop along for a visit before heading along to Arbroath harbour to watch the sailing boats while enjoying an ice cream or fish supper from Marco’s on the Shore. 

Camera Obscura

One of only three in Scotland it was gifted to the town by Sir J M Barrie, the creator of Peter Pan, along with the cricket pavilion in which it is situated. It is only open on Saturdays and Sundays but boasts fantastic views of the local countryside. The Peter Pan kids park is just next door and is a well loved attraction, there are also walks around the hilltop and back down into Kirriemuir. 

Farm Shops and Cafes

Balmakewan

Located just off the A90 at Laurencekirk, Balmakewan is a farm shop and cafe known for its selection of sandwiches, cakes and afternoon teas as much as for its enviable selection of local craft beers. With nearby walks down to the river it makes the perfect stop for couples and families alike.

Charleton Fruit Farm

Charleton Farm has a large park area, which caters for kids of all ages. From toys and climbing frames suited to small children to a large castle climbing area, mazes and go karts, there truly is something for everyone. There’s plenty of picnic benches so you can grab a bite to eat or have a quiet coffee while the kids run wild in the enclosed park area. The cafe offers delicious fresh produce with their strawberry tart being their crowning glory!

Charleton Farm is unique, due to its ‘pick your own’ fruit experience. Which allows you to pick your own strawberries, raspberries and blueberries during the summer paying for what you pick at the end.

Murton Farm

Murton Farm has many great activities for kids to enjoy including an adventure trail, sand pit, and outdoor games. You can also visit the star attractions, the two Kune Kune pigs, as well as the many small animals and birds that the farm hosts. They have also recently extended their tea room, perfect for lunch or grabbing a coffee. Check out their Facebook page for upcoming kids and adult classes they have running.

Dalmore Croft

Dalmore Croft Farm located in Barry, just outside Carnoustie makes the perfect day out for families. Here you can join in a farm walk, learn about small scale farming and meet the animals. They sell fresh produce and flower cuttings; they also offer courses for those that are interested in learning more about farm life.

Newton Farm 

Recently awarded Scotland’s Best Outdoor Experience – at the Thistle Awards. When visiting Newton Farm you can experience a real working farm environment, joining them on various guided tours including the feeding frenzy where you can feed all the animals and the Alpaca walk.

Peel Farm 

Located at the foot of Glenisla, enjoy the countryside while visiting their excellent coffee shop which is famous for its delicious home-made food. Feed the ducks at the Mill Pond or take a stroll along the nature trail. We love to twin this visit with a walk to the Reekie Linn Waterfall which is just a little along the road – it’s one of the most impressive in Scotland! 

Brechin Castle Centre & Country Park

The Country Park has recently gone through a complete transformation, they do now charge an entrance fee but you have the option to bring your own picnic if you want to keep the costs down.

Star attractions include a Fairy Trail, Combine Play, Wooden Maze, Giant Sandpit, Go Karts, Sledge Run, Jumping Pillows, Barrel Train, Dragon’s Lair play park and tractor courtyard.

Once you’ve done running around the centre also has an indoor shop, garden centre and café, which is a great back up option if the weather changes. There’s enough to keep you occupied all day! 

East Scryne Fruit Farm 

Open in the summertime, this quaint farm shop offers fresh strawberries, ice cream, coffee…and the most humongous meringues! There’s a small playpark made out of hay bales and a sandpit for the younger kids .

Walks, Play Parks and Activities

Sea Front Splash, Montrose

The Sea Front splash hosts  three main activity areas and a well positioned ice-cream and refreshment stall! 

• A small park, designed so that you can let the younger toddlers run off steam within a secure gated area
• A new splash park for those warmer summer days! 
• A large park with multiple climbing frames, flying foxes, sand diggers and swings
• It also has a paddling pool area, but there are discussions about whether this is to be removed. 

Carnoustie Sandy Sensation

Carnoustie park provides wooden playgrounds for both younger and older children. It also has a large splash area and paddling pool as well as a crazy golf course and tennis courts. It makes a great day out on a sunny day, just make sure to bring your towels!

Glen Clova – Loch Brandy   

The walk starts from the car park in Clova. Cross the road from here and you can pick up a well defined footpath running north to the loch. It’s a steady climb, running for about 1.5 miles to the waterside. The pretty loch is surrounded by steep hills and is a really stunning sight. Take a picnic and enjoy a wonderful day out. 

Airlie Monument 

A steady climb up the hill from the car park, but a cracking view at the top to make it all worth it. We’ve called it Rapunzel’s tower in the past to encourage the kids up! In the late summer you’ll usually find blaeberries at the top – otherwise known as the Scottish Blueberry! 

St Cyrus Nature Reserve & Beach

We are spoiled to have this on our doorstep in Angus! Keep your eyes peeled on your trip down to the stunning beach for birds, butterflies and even the odd lizard! The beach is never ending, so you have about 2.5km of space for the kids to run off steam and build their sandcastles! 

Lunan Bay 

Situated between Montrose and Inverkeilor this spot has been a hidden treasure for a long time! Now with its own cafe – it makes for a fantastic day out at the beach. Walk one way and you can see what remains of the red castle, walk to the other end and explore the stone caves when the tide is out. You’ll spot many taking the plunge for a swim or even surfing, just be sure to stay safe – the current could pull you out further than you are comfortable with.

Scurdie Ness Lighthouse 

Park your car in Ferryden carpark and then head out on the upper road. You will see a private road signposted as you head towards the landmark. Depending on the speed of the kids, it will take about 45 minutes to an hour to walk there and back. You can actually extend the walk onto Elephant Rock by walking round the back of the lighthouse and along the farm track as the map shows on the website link. 

Montrose Basin Visitor Centre 

Montrose Basin is an enclosed estuary of the river South Esk covering 750 hectares and home to over 80,000 migratory birds including pink-footed geese, arctic terns and even ospreys. During the holiday season you’ll often find events running for kids, educating them on the types of animals they might find here.

Monikie Park 

You could have hours of fun at Monikie whatever your age! Enjoy a gentle stroll around the reserve, or do something more adventurous at the watersports site including sailing, rafting, kayaking and canoeing.  There is a vast amount of space for picnics and a huge park for the kids to play in. At seasonal points in the year the team often run events so keep an eye on their social media channels. 

Crombie Park 

Take the bikes and you’ll be round in 30 minutes on lovely forest trails, take a little longer and do it on foot.  On hot summer days you’ll be pleased to know the playpark sits thoughtfully in the shade. It’s not much of a drive from Carnoustie so you could always pop in there for an ice cream or why not visit the East Scryne Farm.  

Sup 2 Summit 

They brand themselves as Affordability in Adventure and offer a great array of activities across Angus and South Aberdeenshire. Including rock climbing, paddle boarding, bush craft. 

At their private private venue near Fettercairn, kids over 7 can try out paddleboarding for 1.5 hours for as little as £15 per hour – and that’s with wetsuit hire included!
