Kepala Lembaga Layanan Pendidikan Tinggi Wilayah III DKI Jakarta, Dr. Ir. Paristianti Nurwardani, MP. dalam pidato sambutannya mengutip quote dari Bapak Pendidikan Nasional, Ki Hadjar Dewantara, “Setiap orang menjadi guru, setiap rumah menjadi sekolah”, “Setelah selesai wisuda tetap semangat belajar melengkapi kompetensimu dan gali potensi dan berguru pada orang-orang hebat di sekelilingmu. Terus belajar, belajar, dan belajar”, tutur Dr. Ir. Paristianti Nurwardani, MP.

]]>In equipping the students, BNSD conducted immersion trips to Tasikmalaya and Garut. This activity aimed to know the local cultures more closely so that every Fashion Design and Fashion Management student could understand the processes and manufacturing techniques in crafts, cloth, embroidery, and original local weaving. BNSD wants to continue exploring the richness of cultures and strives to spearhead a global initiative through Indonesia’s original cultural identity.

This activity was held for 3 days, from 6 – 8 June 2022. Together with the faculty lecturers, the students gained a lot of experiences through the visits. On the first day, the students visited Kampung Naga, a Sundanese traditional village well known in West Java, and Haryati Embroidery Kawalu, a collection of cloth handicraft products. Both of these places have their own cultural authenticity and appeal to ancestral arts.
On the second day, students had the opportunity to visit several places in Tasikmalaya, such as the Payung Geulis workshop directly by Mrs. Rossi, the embroidery craft SME owned by Mrs. Evi, Mendong weaving SMEs, and Tasikmalaya batik SMEs. This visit was very effective, as the students could get to know some of the Indonesian styles through handicrafts and regional cultures.
This activity ended with a trip to Garut on the third day. BNSD students visited Hendar, a Garut woven textile craftsman. He is one of the weaving craftsmen who started as an artist. Now, he has successfully built a famous weaving business in Garut.
The immersion trips held by BINUS Northumbria School of Design (BNSD) to Tasikmalaya and Garut provided knowledge and exploration experiences for the students to get closer to Indonesian cultures, which are rich in historical elements and ancestral identities. This activity is expected to provide an output for each student to recognize the processes and techniques of fashion works that will be applied to their projects. Therefore, the fashion culture in Indonesia will continue to develop and spread out widely to the international arena through the creative industry of the nation’s young generation.

]]>The post 5 Reasons to Enroll in the Fashion Management Program appeared first on BINUS Northumbria School of Design.
]]>These are the reasons why it is the best school you could ever find:
Fashion Management is a major under BINUS Northumbria School of Design. As the name suggests, it is a collaborative effort between BINUS UNIVERSITY and Northumbria University in Newcastle, United Kingdom. This collaboration is intended not only to enhance the quality of the education but provide a double-degree program for the student.
Upon the successful completion of four years of study, graduates will achieve a Sarjana Seni (S.Sn) and a Bachelor’s Degree in Fashion Management with Honours (BA-Hons).
BINUS Northumbria School of Design provides a creative and enjoyable studying environment through excellent facilities and programs. It believes that a skilled professional will offer the best solutions for every problem through design. Among many facilities on the campus are dedicated workrooms for garment production: a textile experiment room for batik, woven, and knitting; computer labs; and a photographic studio.

The primary objectives of the Fashion Management program are to provide graduates with both soft skills and hard skills to help them grow in the fashion industry. Top-notch technical skills, mastery in contextual knowledge, and ICT application are all considered important to offer the best responsive solution to the industry. Graduates are also equipped with effective communication and entrepreneurship skills with professional ethics to make sure they are socially aware and responsible as fashion professionals.
As undergraduates, students are required to demonstrate and apply the theoretical design concepts, history, culture, and temporary issues of the fashion industry. They also demonstrate their communication and marketing skills to promote their products and eventually identify problems and propose innovative solutions through their design based on a research approach.
Students will be prepared for the prospective career ahead during their four years of study in Fashion Management. The integrated curriculum is created to provide students with technical and non-technical skills to grow in the industry.
The Fashion Management program offers internships for each student. Therefore, they could conduct real projects to develop their ability when they are involved in professional practice, introducing the real workplace experience and teaching them to cope with the demands of the working environment.
The Fashion Management program in BINUS Northumbria School of Design also conducts a series of field trips to the professionals and industries to give the students good grounds for a broad overview of the industry.

Exams are both dreadful and boring for all students, but it is something a student will never encounter in this program. Rather than exams, most coursework is assessed through a variety of tasks, such as assignments, individual and group projects, peer assessment, thesis/final project reports, reflective practice, and so on.
To be a good fashion designer, skill is not everything you need. It is also important to find a supportive environment to polish and sharpen it, so you will be ready to tackle every arising challenge once you take the first step into the fashion industry.

]]>The post 6 Important Steps in Designing Process appeared first on BINUS Northumbria School of Design.
]]>Dinda Nathania Azzahra Lubis, a Graphic Design student at BINUS Northumbria School of Design, explained that there are about six steps that are considered important before creating an outstanding art:
When we talk about design, we don’t just talk about creative ideas but what the clients want and what will satisfy them. Once you receive the brief, study it thoroughly and ask as many questions as you want at the moment to make sure you start on the right foot. Make sure the questions will enlighten you ahead of the designing process. The brief plays a vital key in the process, as a reference point for both clients and designers, so everybody must be on the same page.
In-depth research helps you understand the client and the project you are involved in. Find out about the company’s history and culture, the competitor, and trends related to the industry. By doing this, you will learn about their taste and preference and avoid creating something similar to their competitor.
You also have to know your audience (age, gender, location, lifestyle, social and economic background) to deliver the right message in the best way through your artwork.
Brainstorming should be the next step after finishing the brief and research. This is often considered the most important process since a designer builds a strong foundation for the artwork.
Designers have their own way of generating ideas, from arranging a structured mind map linked to the main concept or simply writing down their random ideas in a disorganized list from time to time. Whatever it is, make sure to record everything that pops into your mind. You never know which one will be useful, and you might discard your current ideas later.
Brainstorming is indifferent to problem-solving, and your idea bank is the key to finding the best solution.
While brainstorming is important, don’t ponder yourself too long by thinking and not taking on the real challenge. Never hesitate to make the first scratch even though you are not sure what to do next. You can always revise it later. In the middle of the designing process, a designer usually does the test print or creates a mockup to get a feel about whether their design will work or needs to be refined.
Your client probably only approves of one concept, wants a mix and match of all the concepts, or comes up with something new. Revisions are perfectly normal for any designer. However, remember to give your opinion rather than become a “yes man” for the client. You are the expert here, and they would like some suggestions and guidance for what’s best for them.
When the client loves your design and requests only minor revisions, you are one step closer to the finish line. Send the final design to them and get their approval to complete the project!

While all of those steps above are necessary, the most important key to creating the best artwork is to have strong and unique concepts and implement them. Those are what the students at BINUS Northumbria School of Design have in mind in the designing process to create the best result.

]]>We will be presenting two masterpieces by our students: Kanagara Amerta (by Amadea Calista, Elandra Putri, and Melvina Jocinta) and Cahya (by Shafa Praditya, Chanreaksmey Loy, and Jennifer).
Kanagara Amerta portrays the feelings that arose from the narrative that includes sorrow, hope, beauty, and dignity. This collection has a story of the Krakatoa volcano disaster. The designer aims to evince the character of a substantial part of Indonesia.
Meanwhile, Cahya means tranquility, traditions, and culture that derive indigenous Bantenese people from living a simple, meaningful, and pure life while preserving the environment and culture. As a brand, Cahya highlights the people of Baduy who live far from modern civilization, living amid nature in peace and solitude.
Kanagara Amerta and Cahya, along with another 23 designers from Indonesia and Singapore, will present at Paris Fashion Week on 5-6 March 2022.
