Of course, Amsterdam is still a city of postcards, largely thanks to its 400-year-old canals which are spanned by a multitude of bridges, even more numerous than in Venice. The Singel was the moat which surrounded and protected the medieval city. On the subject of Netherlands tulip fields, while these are abundant in Holland, they are certainly an iconic beauty. If you have limited time in Amsterdam and happen to miss the abundant and vivid colours of the tulip fields in Netherlands, you may still enjoy the Tulip Festival which is held once a year.

Zaanse Schans Museum

Just outside the city, you will discover the Zaanse Schans Museum. Zaanse Schans is a museum dedicated to the history and symbolism of the clog, and also introduces you to other world-famous pieces of Holland. Holland’s fascinating windmills, industries and pretty green wooden houses are all part of the museum’s journey. The adventure takes you from the very first windmills to the newest factories.

Van Gogh Museum

The Van Gogh Museum houses a most extensive collection, with some of the best works of the brilliant Dutch painter. The museum has more than 200 paintings and 400 drawings by Van Gogh from different eras. You will then find “La chambre d’Arles”, “The dining rooms with potatoes” and of course “The sunflowers”. Van Gogh’s work is said to still have a great influence on modern art due to its striking colours and emotional inspiration.

Picnic at Vondelpark

For a perfect picnic, don’t hesitate to take your blanket, lunch and wine to the Vondelpark. It is the largest green space in the capital and it owes its name to the poet Joost van den Vondel (1587-1679).
The park is also a kind of cultural centre, as it houses several remarkable statues, including one of Picasso. From June to September you can enjoy music, dance performances and many other types of children’s activities in the park.

Terschelling beach

This one is a bit different from other Dutch beaches: Terschelling is actually an island. It may be a good distance from Amsterdam, but you did need proof that there really are nice beaches in the Netherlands right? The water and the beach are impeccably clean, and you can easily find a free place to soak up the scenery. As there are some great cycle lanes just outside of the beach, some visit Terschelling simply to explore the beautiful islands of the Dutch Wadden region by bicycle. What’s great is that you can easily get to the island on the ferry from the neighboring island of Vlieland. You can take a ferry ride to Terschelling directly from the interesting harbour town of Harlingen, too, which is on the coast of Wadden Sea.

If you fancy doing very little but prefer to relax, then the island will be an ideal spot for doing just that. The atmosphere on the island is superb, and its a perfect place for a little tranquility.

Bavaria holidays will not be the same without a little history. The Old Picture Gallery (Alte Pinakothek) has an amazing collection of paintings by Bruegel, Rubens, Rembrandt, Dürer, El Greco, and many others. You certainly won’t go hungry in Bavaria as there are thousands of restaurants, many offering international cuisine. Munich’s people particularly are renowned for Gemutlichkeit. That is the feeling of warm and easy friendship. They enjoy gathering in great informal crowds in summer beer gardens, Oktoberfest brewer’s tents, or in beer halls, like the famous Bavaria beer Hofbräuhaus. Puerto de La Cruz

Situated in the north of the Island, Puerto de La Cruz is the main tourist destination in the north of Tenerife. Clearwater Beach Orlando

If you are tight on holiday time, you may wonder when planning, is it worth the 2 hours drive to Clearwater Beach from Orlando? Well, that depends. The Atlantic Ocean is quite different from the Gulf of Mexico. Some holidaymakers just don’t like the ‘Atlantic water’ and the beaches on that coast. However, the water on the Gulf side can be so much nicer and some argue that the sand is much more attractive. Once voted “Best Beach Town in Florida, Clearwater Beach has beautiful white sand and clear, shallow water. This really is the ideal playground for families.

Now as we all know, many visit Orlando for a very different reason and the beaches are just a little extra fine ‘icing on the cake’.

From the magic of Walt Disney World Resort and the fairy-tale style of all Disney traditions, the incredible themed water parks, to its over 170 world-class golf courses, young and old continue to make Orlando Florida a part of their next family holiday.

Now while some come just to enjoy the hair-raising coasters of Universal Orlando Resort, some may be unaware of the unforgettable ecotourism experiences that also await them.

Boggy Creek airboat is one such adventure. The excursion allows you to cruise the swamps by day, sunset or night on an airboat with a local guide who knows the wetlands well and where to locate the best wildlife for your trip. Located in the famous region of Kissimmee near Walt Disney World, the attraction glides across the headwaters of the Florida Everglades at speeds up to 64 Kilometres per hour aboard a six-passenger airboat. During the 45-minute tour, you’ll encounter areas untouched by man and see a wide range of exotic wildlife, so keep a lookout for alligators.

Although Wet n Wild water park is now permanently closed, Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon water theme park is still going strong. It’s located at the Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Florida near Orlando, and is one of two operating water parks at the resort. It is famous for the Castaway creek ride where you can drift all day on an inner tube as you float down its scenic 2000 foot long lazy river that encircles the entire water park.

Best time to visit Orlando 

In my opinion, the very best time to visit Orlando is anytime from March to May. That’s the time of year you’ll find the most attractive weather. You will also find more appealing prices on travel and accommodation, that’s outside of the school holidays of course.

Likewise, September to mid-November offers comfortable temperatures and reasonable airfare and hotel rates, but autumn’s months make up the most active part of Florida’s hurricane season which falls between June and November.

Summertime is the worst season to plan a trip to the area – that’s when the state’s heat and humidity are on the border of being hard to bear for some, and hotels take advantage of the school break to drive up room rates. Although August will often be humid and very hot, if you enjoy the pool and water parks during the day and the theme parks evening time, it can still be an awesome trip. If you’re staying at Disney resort, then August would be better as they start the free dining then.

Plan ahead of time all of the parks you want to visit and the rides and shows you’d like to see and do, and you can, generally enjoy most months to visit Orlando.

Weather in Orlando Florida

The weather in Orlando is usually quite predictable. In other words depending on what month you plan to visit you will often know whether to bring an umbrella or SPF 30 sunscreen or both for certain months. Usually for most days during March through to May the weather in Orlando is constantly high 50’s to high 80’s most days from March to May. July will be very hot and parks can get quite crowded, but even that doesn’t mean it will be terrible. Some of the best theme parks have amazing indoor activities to cool down from the heat and enjoy air-conditioning.

Ilfracombe Harbour

With its sheltered location, Ilfracombe Harbour has been in operation since the 1100s. Today, just like in times gone by, you can watch the fishing boats come in on the high tide to unload their catch. Surrounding the harbour, you will find shops catering to tourists, old fashioned pubs, cafes and of course traditional fish and chips. From Ilfracombe Harbour, you can take a boat trip to watch the dolphins or visit Lundy Island.

Lundy Island

Named Lund-ey, meaning Puffin Island by the Vikings in the 9th century AD, Lundy Island is an unspoiled beauty that is home to many native and migrating birds. Located where the Bristol Channel meets the Atlantic Ocean, a day trip to Lundy is an exciting adventure for the entire family. During the summer months, MS Oldenburg departs from Ilfracombe Harbour at 10:00 and arrives back in Ilfracombe at 18:00. The journey to Lundy takes just under two hours, and if you are lucky, you might get to see playful dolphins following alongside the ship. Lundy Island is owned and operated by The National Trust.

South West Coast Path

Famous for its high cliffs and jaw-dropping scenery, the 13.6 mile stretch of the South West Coast Path that passes through Ilfracombe is considered as being the most challenging part of the 630-mile coastal route. While being a curse for shipping, the rugged North Devon coast was a haven for smugglers who in the 18th and 19th centuries used hidden coves to bring their contraband ashore. Make sure to wear sturdy boots and be prepared for the breath-taking views.

Tunnels Beaches

Carved by hand through steep slate cliffs in the 1820s, the four tunnels allowed Victorian bathers to access Ilfracomes best-sheltered beach. It was the building of the tunnels that turned Ilfracombe into a summer resort for thousands of Victorian tourists. Today, due to the dramatic backdrop, the tunnels beaches are often used as a location for wedding photographs.

Chapel of St Nicholas on Lantern Hill

Perched on a hill between the harbour and the sea is the 650-year-old glass-turreted St Nicholas Chapel. First built as a place of worship for the people of Ilfracombe the chapel also served as a lighthouse and is believed to be the oldest working lighthouse in England. Admission to the lighthouse is free, and on a clear day, you can see the coastline of Wales.

Cream tea at the Old Corn Mill

Devon is, of course, famous for its clotted cream making a stop for an afternoon tea and scone an absolute must while visiting Ilfracombe. Having been voted The Best Tea Room in Devon year after year, the Old Corn Mill is a lovely place to go and sample a Devon tradition. The Old Corn Mill tearoom is set in a unique 16th-century watermill just 300 metres from Hele Bay Beach.

Ilfracombe Aquarium

Located in the Ilfracombe Harbour inside the old lifeboat house, Ilfracombe Aquarium has a wide selection of marine and sea life that call North Devon home. In total, the aquarium has more than 75 species of sea creatures that will give you a unique understanding of the underwater world. A visit to the Ilfracombe Aquarium is a great learning experience for children and an ideal outing for the entire family.

One of the best beaches in Mallorca

My first beach to mention is a family favourite called Platja de Muro Mallorca, or Majorca as some like to spell it. This is one of the best and safest beaches in Alcudia according to the local council. It claims to have the most advanced life-saving equipment on the island. Moreover, its gentle waves and clear shallow water really do enhance this pretty beach.

My second favourite beach in Mallorca is Playa Canyamel. This is a small resort that is mainly about a simple beach holiday with charming provincial character. The picturesque atmosphere of Canyamel has long attracted families and those seeking peace and quiet. Its shallow water often creates more of a rippling effect on the shore rather than experiencing consistent, powerful waves. The sea in this region is the very essence of beauty with its crystalline turquoise hues that glisten and glow in the sun’s rays. The journey to Canyamel is usually directly from Palma airport by taxi, bus or hire car. In fact even the one hour journey by car is a most pleasant experience, as you try and absorb some of nature’s best scenery. The short distance to tourist places, such as Cala Millor, also makes the resort very sought after location for holidaymakers.

Whichever region you visit for a holiday, you’ll find clean, well maintained sandy beaches and with easy accessibility. Spain have their own quality standards to meet and maintain including the Q’ Quality Award Certification which is awarded by the Spanish Tourism Quality Institute (ICTE).

Marbella, Malaga, in particularly Torrox and Fuengirola, also have their abundance of high-quality beaches. Puerto Banus in Marbella, for example, is one such beach and is probably the most popular coast on the Costa del Sol. The water is lovely and clear and very shallow meaning you’ll feel safer about letting the little ones have a paddle and splash about. Here you won’t find any rocks in the sea and there are some fascinating coves that prevent big waves coming into the shore.

Fuengirola

Close to all the attraction on the Costa del Sol, Fuengirola is the perfect place to stay put or as a base for your Spanish holiday. With over 7 kilometres of beach to select from, you will never feel overcrowded even during the high season.

Playa San Francisco, Playa de Torreblanca and Playa Los Boliches all merge into one vast expanse of sand and are connected by a long promenade flanked by hotels and holiday apartments. All three beaches offer sun loungers and umbrellas for rent along with non-motorised water sports equipment. For jet skis motorboats and larger watercraft, you need to visit the marina next to Playa San Francisco.

If you are looking for a quieter beach, head just south of town to Playa El Bombo and while it is next to the main road linking Fuengirola to Marbella there is something here for both young and old.

If you have small children the beaches in Fuengirola tick all the right boxes for safe family fun.

Benalmádena

Best known for its beautiful beaches and lively nightlife, Benalmádena is perfect for people who seek action-packed adventure while also looking for a little bit of history and local flavour.

With 10 kilometres of beaches to choose from that range in style from tiny secluded coves to family-friendly beaches with plenty of activities. There is a beach for everyone in Benalmádena.

Playa La Carihuela

Always busy with plenty of going on Playa La Carihuela leaves nothing wanting. There are public toilets, showers lifeguards on duty and two children’s playgrounds.

A promenade runs alongside the beach filled with restaurants to suit all budgets and tastes, plus if you forget your sunscreen or towel you can always buy something rather than have to return to the hotel. On the beach itself, you have several chiringuitos that metamorphose into trendy cocktail bars once the sun goes down.

Playa Malapesquera

Located right next to the marina, Playa Malapesquera is a large urban beach with all the facilities you would expect to find at a town centre beach. The beach is very wide as you get close to the marina with plenty of space available even in the height of summer.

Playa de Arroyo Hondo

Almost completely enclosed by a hotel that shares its name Playa de Arroyo Hondo has been given a prestigious blue flag for its cleanliness and the quality of the water. The beach is watched over by lifeguards during the summer and has pedal boats for hire and plenty of loungers and parasols for rent.

Marbella

With a reputation as being a playground for celebrities and the well to do, many people shun holidaying in Marbella as they feel it may be too expensive. Yes, there are fancy restaurants, glitzy clubs and designer boutiques but if you visit Marbella and go out and about like a local it’s no more expensive than other Costa del Sol resorts.

Playa de la Fontanilla

For the real Marbella feel you have to visit Playa de la Fontanilla in the centre of town. Backed by a wide promenade awash with palm trees this is the place to see and be seen. Despite not having any facilities for children Playa de la Fontanilla is popular with families due to the way the beach slopes gently into the water. If however, you are looking for a place where the kids can run riot head to Playa del Faro where you will find great play areas.

Playa del Faro

With a large children’s play area shaped like a ship, you can let the children run wild while you work on your tan. Backed by a promenade full of shops and places to grab a bite to eat this urban beach might not be as fancy as other Marbella beaches but ticks all the right boxes for families on a budget. If you feel like a bit of excitement the marina next to the beach hires out jet skis and offers banana boat rides.

Playa de Puerto Banús

Puerto Banus may be the place where the rich moor their mega yachts, but it’s definitely not where they go to laze on the beach. Designated a blue flag beach for its high standards the highlights on this beach include a park at the end of the promenade and a huge water slide that the kids will love. Avoid the beach bars as they tend to be on the expensive side and instead buy snacks and cold drinks from a kiosk on the promenade.

There are so many beaches that I need to list, but hopefully this small handful will give you an idea of the cleanliness and quality that you can expect. This small selection should also help you to observe some of the great variety to Spain’s coastline and help you choose where to spend your next beach holiday.

Evelyn Proimos Flikr

The largest beach in Key West, and said to be the best public beach in this zone is Smathers Beach. This shoreline is a magnet for those who love attractive sandy beaches and perfectly clear waters. The sea here is quite shallow for a good distance form the shore, so its ideal for families and younger children. There is a good number of sports enjoyed here such as volleyball, kayaking, snorkelling and parasailing is also common.

This well cared beach is a personal favourite and has all local amenities such as toilets, changing rooms and food and drinks kiosks. On the positive, Smathers beach looks beautiful and has hotels located conveniently adjacent to it. It is not usually overcrowded and has a nice pathway alongside it where you can get some steps in and enjoy a bit of walking to stretch your legs. On the downside, it is long but is also quite a narrow beach. Also, though the sea is shallow for a good part, the sea bed is very soft to begin with and you can sink ankle deep. This maybe because the beach is man made and the sand has to be brought in.

Overall, the beach may not win any international awards, but the whole view from the beach is very photogenic and the water looks amazing.
