Water Heater Discharge Line Mistakes

Question: Can A Water Heater’s discharge line run uphill or no?

Answer: No. This particular discharge line runs uphill and is attached to galvanized pipe coming off of the side of the tank. Your water heater’s discharge line for the (T & P) temperature and pressure leaf valve should never run uphill.

This is somewhat of a common installation mistake we see and it should always be avoided. We recommend you have the discharge line replaced and installed correctly, by a qualified water heater installer like All Star Water Heaters Inc, of Southern California.

Under Sink Water Heater Replacement

Using An On Demand Tankless Unit

2.5 Gallon Water Heater Needs Replaced

This recent water heater job in Riverside, was perfect for an under sink water heater replacement using an on-demand tankless model. The customer said their small 2.5 gallon water heater was no longer keeping up with the demand. The customers home was small enough and the amount of water they used was minimal. Therefore after going through the 2.5 gallon tank models, we then showed them some under sink, on-demand water heater replacement options.

For Smaller Homes With Minimal Hot Water Needs

For smaller homes with minimal hot water needs, an on-demand tankless water heater is an excellent option. Not only are they smaller, compact and fit where large tank water heaters won’t, they are also much more efficient. That is because a tankless water heater heats water on demand as needed.

On the other hand, traditional water heaters with holding tanks are designed to heat water any time the water temp drops below the preferred setting. This requires more gas or electricity usage, to heat and store gallons and gallons of warm water for the next time it’s needed. Imagine saving some money everyday because your water heater no longer heats water until it’s needed.

When it comes to under sink on-demand water heaters, there are several excellent brand options. Here at All Star Water Heaters Inc, water heaters are our specialty. We work with the biggest and best names in the industry to provide our Southern California customers water heaters they can count on to work day in and day out. All of our tankless water heaters come with our industry leading warranty. Most can be purchased and installed in the same day.

Water Heater Not Heating Up? All Star Water Heaters Inc, Can Help

The most common water heater problems that customers call us about are when their water heater is either taking too long to reheat or they have no hot water at all. Neither of these are good signs but they don’t always mean you will need expensive repairs or a complete water heater replacement.

Sometimes your hot water problem is due to something as simple as a breaker tripping or a pilot that went out. And sometimes tank capacity or changes in your property’s water pressure can prevent hot water from reaching your fixtures. Because of this, it’s always best to call a professional and have your water heater inspected if you think it’s not heating up properly.

Gas And Electric Water Heaters

The most common issues we see when inspecting gas water heaters are generally due to the pilot, dirty valves, burner pot or the gas line. The most common issues we see with electric water heaters are typically due to heating element failure.

Again, these are not everything, just the most common water heater problems we see. And luckily, most of these problems do not warrant a water heater replacement but on occasion and depending on the age of your unit, or amount of parts or repairs needed, replacement may be your best bet. For longevity of your water heater as well as your warranty, it is always a good idea to have it maintained as regular as possible. We recommend having all your major appliances checked out at least once a year, if not more.

Water Heater Hazards

Water Heater Fire Dangers

When it comes to water heater hazards, nothing is more alarming for a homeowner than seeing a fire raging. It’s not extremely common but it’s important to always remember that any type of gas appliance can be a hazard. Not only can they cause an unexpected fire, they can also lead to serious property damage, injury and even death.

In Part 1 of this 3 Part Series, on Water Heater Hazards, we will be talking about gas water heaters and water heater fires.

Help, My Water Heater Is On Fire!

We received a water heater service call from a property owner in Riverside County. The customer was experiencing an alarming, water heater hazard. The owner stated that his gas water heater which was less than 10 years old, was on fire.

Immediately, we gave him the emergency water heater shutdown instructions to shut off the gas to the unit. We then sent out one of our local water heater technicians to asses the damage. Our goal was to eliminate any further fire dangers and make necessary repairs. The homeowner easily located his home’s gas shut off valve. He then shut off the gas flow and waited for our tech to arrive.

Upon arrival, our technician determined that this particular tank model was a 2015 Whirlpool Water Heater. Aside from the fire the homeowner saw, the unit appeared to be in great shape. After completing his initial assessment, he determined that the problem was the burner pot assembly. The burner pot had split and was leaking gas outside of the assembly.

Our technician then replaced the burner pot assembly, turned the gas back on and checked the unit for leaks. Once he determined there were no more leaks, the customer’s water heater was fired back up and heating water normally.

Burner pot assemblies ignite the gas from the pilot light to heat the water. In this case, the burner pot split and was leaking gas, which caused a fire at the base of the unit.

Prevention and Maintenance

Fire hazards are not uncommon when it comes to gas powered appliances. For homeowners with gas water heaters and other gas appliances, it is important to have them checked and serviced annually by a licensed, water heater technician. Is It Time To Replace Old Your Water Heater?

signs of damaged water heater

Water Heater In Need Of Replacement

Knowing when it’s time to replace your old water heater can be tricky for homeowners. Plumbers everywhere recommended having your water heater inspected and serviced annually. The reason is is because water heater problems are not always visible to the untrained eye. Qualified water heater technicians can quickly spot potential failures in both tank and tankless water heaters.

Know What To Look For

When visually inspecting your water heater, be sure you know what to look for. Visible signs of rust, calcium build-up, rot and and mildew are warning signs, If you notice any of these signs, your water heater may need replaced. Slow leaks and drips are also problematic because they cause rust pipes, fittings, and valves. Problems like these can rust out your water heater’s pan and expansion tanks and lead to major water damage.

If any fittings, piping, pan or valves show any of these warning signs, it’s time to have your water heater inspected. Our licensed water heater techs can determine what type of repairs, if any, are needed. If you’re looking for a new, energy efficient water heater call you local experts at All Star Water Heaters Inc.

Slow or No Hot Water

A lack of warm water at your fixtures can be a sign that it is time to flush your water heater. Both tank and tankless model water heaters should be flushed regularly. Regular tank flushes prevent harmful build-up of calcium and sediment in the units. Build-up can cause slow reheating as well as excessive reheating leading to your water heater’s parts failing.

Flushing your water heater regularly will extend the life of your unit. When regularly maintained, it can save you hundreds of dollars on water heater replacement and repair costs.

Tankless Water Heater Maintenance https://allstarwaterheaters.com/tankless-water-heater-maintenance/ https://allstarwaterheaters.com/tankless-water-heater-maintenance/#comments Sun, 11 Sep 2022 17:31:47 +0000 https://allstarwaterheaters.com/?p=3357

Tankless water heater maintenance should be performed by a licensed water heater company annually. If you live in a So Cal area with hard water, you may want to have it done twice a year for the best results. We recommend bi-annually if you have hard water and a lot of build-up on your pipes and fixtures.

For those that aren’t familiar, tankless model water heaters are designed to provide hot water on demand. There is no holding tank and no time or energy wasted on heating a tank full of water. But on-demand only applies if the unit is regularly maintained and kept in good working order.

Tankless Water Heater Inspection And Flushing

During the maintenance process, a water heater repair tech will open up and inspect the unit to ensure everything is working properly. Gas and/or electrical will be inspected. The unit should also be flushed. This routine cleaning and inspection are key but flushing tankless water heaters is also very important. Regular maintenance is also important to help maintain your warranty coverage.

If you live in Riverside, San Bernardino or San Diego and need your tankless water heater serviced or replaced, call your local All Star Water Heater Office. We not only have the best water heater experts in So Cal, we are the most affordable too.

Why Do Water Heaters Work Better With Water Softeners?

water softener and water heater installation

Installing Water Softeners Extend The Life Of Your Water Heater

Water heaters work better with water softeners because they prevent hard water, harmful buildup and sediment from reaching your water heater. Water Softener Systems are perfect for preventing hard water and calcium that can damage your tank. Mineral buildup on fixtures and faucets are a clear indication that you have hard minerals in your water. Eliminating these harmful minerals before they reach your tank will extend the life of your water heater.

Do you notice hard water or build up in your home or office’s water heater or plumbing fixtures? If so, you would probably benefit from installing a new water softener system from All Star Water Heaters.

We Recommend MasterFlow Water Softeners

Master Flow Water SoftenerWe recommend MasterFLow Water Softeners with patented MasterMind Controls, to remove undissolved hard water minerals like magnesium and calcium. These hard minerals can cause serious plumbing issues in your home or business from excessive buildup in pipes, fittings and valves. They can also cause extreme damage to your hose bibs, faucets and other plumbing fixtures. In addition to removing harmful minerals, water softeners can also help clear up cloudy water and improve taste.
