The Cotswold Series is a swimming competition between 20 clubs of the Southwest of England with ‘a small Club ethos’.  It caters for swimmers aged 11 to Open and comprises 4 rounds of 4 teams, held between January and March, resulting in a Final, larger round in April.

It is a club effort selected initially from ‘senior’ swimmers (understood as most experienced across all 3 disciplines) in swimming squads Red, Yellow & Green. The purpose of the league is to give young (but strong) swimmers competitive experience and hence a ‘speeding ticket’ system is run. This means that swimmers of Regional or above standard are not usually selected, as they will swim too fast. They can however swim relay legs.

This is the club’s more selective swimming gala, the PGL league being our entry level gala. The club relies on an initial team of four swimmers per age group (Open, 15U, 13U and 11U) who are each selected for their strength in at least one stroke. Each swimmer is expected to swim at least one individual event (maximum of 2, plus an I.M) and one freestyle relay leg (as well as a cannon relay leg if selected to swim this event). Races are 25m for U11, 50m for U13 & U15 and 100m for Open swimmers. Swimmers may swim up an unlimited number of events.

The fastest swimmers for each stroke in each age group are eligible to participate. Team selection is at the discretion of Head coach Tom Howells. The age group is defined as whatever age the swimmer will be at the date of the Finals in the year of competition i.e. 22nd April 2023. Swimmers must be at least 9 years of age at the date of the Finals to be able to participate in the Series.  Final selection will be made once the Bristol Christmas Cracker Meet times have been received and you will be informed during the week commencing 19/12. Swimmers must race twice across the whole event to be eligible for the Cotswold Series finals (which will be held on 22nd April). The exception is for 11yo and under, who must have raced once.

Saturday 18th February – hosted by Brockworth at the Leisure Centre Cheltenham and featuring: Cwmbran, CSWPC, Burnham Academy

Saturday 4th March – hosted by CSWPC at the Leisure Centre Cheltenham (home gala) and featuring: CSWPC, Backwell, Weston Super Mare, Cheltenham Phoenix

Saturday 18th March – hosted by Clevedon at the Hutton Moor Leisure Centre and featuring: Clevedon Cinderford, Dursley & CSWPC

Saturday 22nd April Final:
Bridgwater will host the A Final – if not in the Final then Backwell.
Cinderford will host the B Final – if not in the Final then Clevedon.
Bristol North will host the C Final – if not in the Final then Cheddar.

The 8 teams with highest number of gala points after 4 rounds have been swum shall compete in the A Final of the Series. The 6 teams with the next highest number of points shall compete in the B Final of the Series. The 6 teams with the next highest number of points shall compete in the C Final of the Series.

Most events start between 3.00pm and 5.00 pm and last about 1.5 hours. Coaches are hired on for events taking place further afield, see below.

How do I get there?

Coaches will be provided for long distance events at a cost of approx. £8 per person.
Spaces on board coaches are allocated based on priority order as follow: swimmers, team managers, officials, +/- spectators if space allows. Please find more information below on how to guarantee your space on the coach.
Exact timings and travel arrangements will be provided nearer to the date of each round.

What do swimmers need to take?

A club T-shirt, a club swim hat (a spare is handy), a snack, a water bottle (no energy drinks please!), sliders/flipflops, a small bag (no bigger than the mesh bag used to carry the swimming kit)

There is very limited space and no access to storage at these events. Please leave coats, shoes etc in the car/on the coach. Do not bring large sports holdalls.

The Cotswold League is a set of challenging competitions that requires the commitment of parent/carer volunteers and club officials to ensure the events run smoothly.  We will require volunteers at each round, each event.

This role involves helping look after swimmers’ poolside before, during and after each race and assisting coaches.

We highly recommend you read through the disqualification rules with your child before each event as part of their preparation, even if they are a senior swimmer.

Mistakes happen and there are many reasons a swimmer can be disqualified so it’s advisable to understand these terms prior to events.  Being DQ’d is upsetting for a swimmer but if the reasons are understood this does help.  It takes much repetition and practice to master skills necessary.  Avoiding disqualification will improve our rankings in this competition.  It is important to remind your child to ask the Coaches if they are DQ’d and are unsure or do not understand. Now is the time to practice those turns and wall touches so they count in January!

That’s a 33% improvement in numbers of county qualified swimmers compared with 2022 – and a massive 62% increase in the number of county swims achieved – with 2 meets still to come.

CSWPC squads are most proud of their PB rate in competition; around the 80% mark is a normal achievement at each meet, so we are looking forward to 2023 being fun and fast.

Best of luck to all those swimming at the Christmas Cracker meet down at Bristol Hengrove in December. There should be more names on this list by Christmas; and some fantastic young relay teams to represent CSWPC.

Following two years of lockdowns and restrictions CSWPC were finally able to run the annual Primary Schools Swimming Gala in 2022.

It was fantastic to see 121 swimmers taking part in the races and their respective parents, relatives and supporters cheering them on from the stands.

Congratulations to all the swimmers who took part. You were amazing!

St Edwards won both the Gerald Cook Trophy, awarded to the fastest under 11 mixed relay team, and the Fred Moss Shield Trophy, awarded to the fastest under 10 mixed team relay.

Noah S, above, won the Frank White trophy, awarded to the fastest under 11 boy. Phoebe C, below, won the Muriel Adams trophy, awarded to the fastest under 11 girl.

A special mention should go to Vahena Marsili who championed this event, with no previous experience. She summoned help from all corners of CSWPC, from our youngest swimmers to the President of the club, Mr Louis Eperjesi, who presented the trophies on the night.

These events could not possibly run without our army of volunteers and the staff at Leisure@ our thanks go to everyone that was involved. You all deserve a medal!

U17 Girls

In the first gold medal match of the day at Liverpool Aquatics Centre CSWPC were the first side to open the scoring going 2-0 up inside the first quarter.

City of Manchester followed with 5 unanswered goals to take the lead and they didn’t let it slip from that point on. They took home the gold, with CSWPC awarded the silver medals.

CSWPC’s Amelie Perkins added 4 goals to her 7 scored on Saturday and claimed the top goal scorers award for the tournament.

2nd – CSWPC U17’s Girls NAG’s Team 2022

U17 Boys

A back and forth game saw CSWPC claim the bronze medal after a narrow 10-9 win over Watford.

Watford looked to have the tie in control before 4 unanswered goals in the final 6 minutes saw CSWPC take home the medals.

CSWPC Toby Chilcott added 2 more goals to the 6 he scored on Saturday to tie the top goal scorers title for the tournament.

3rd – CSWPC U17’s Boys NAG’s Team 2022

In the bronze medal match, Otter looked to be opening up a comfortable lead until CSWPC fought their way back into the tie.

The sides were level at 5-5 in the third quarter before a red card for Otter followed by a successful penalty gave CSWPC control.

Entering the 4th quarter in the lead CSWPC tried to keep the upper hand but the determined Otter team came back and eventually took the lead to win 13-12 in the last few seconds of the match.

4th – CSWPC U19’s Girls NAG’s Team 2022

The last game of the weekend saw CSWPC run out 12-6 winners over Bridgefield in the U19’s final.

In a cagey first half, CSWPC managed to edge themselves into a 3-2 lead at the interval after not conceding a single goal in the second quarter.

CSWPC’s goalkeeper, Zach Downer, won goalkeeper of the tournament after a strong of impressive saves in the final, including one from a penalty shot when the sides were level at 2-2.

In the second half, CSWPC took control of the game, storming into a 7-2 lead in the third quarter before asserting their dominance in the last to make it a 12-6 win.

CSWPC’s George Glover scored 4 for his side on route to earning himself the top goal scorer award, adding to his 5 goals in the semi-final on Saturday. Will Thompson took home the Most Valuable Player award after his hat-trick, including 2 in the third quarter that helped send his side to victory.

An emotional CSWPC head coach, Stuart Mckie said “ecstatic is the word, without a doubt. It’s been a hard year, and even longer before that with Covid and this is the end of that hard year.”

”When you’re taking a group of boys out through various leagues and different age groups and forming a team, you do get that carer approach to it and it’ very emotional. They all did something brilliant yesterday and they came out and did the same again today and a little bit more.”

A truly amazing weekend for CSWPC players these trophies and medals add to the Gold the U15’s Girls won back in December 2021.

Quite a haul for the age group Waterpolo teams since lockdown let’s hope their success continues.

It has been 2 years since the competition has been fully run – 4 rounds of galas followed by a final.

The competition operates with events having maximum times to ensure “A” grade swimmers, swimmers with district times, are unable to compete. Anyone who swims outside the maximum time will be issued with a “speeding” ticket.

Each round 40+ CSWPC swimmers will take part in a friendly competition against other local clubs. Gaining valuable race experience and team cohesion.

Round 1 – West Bromwich Leisure Centre

CSWPC returned to the league in style today!

A stellar 163 points despite some speeding tickets for young racers who were quicker then we thought they were.

Securing first place in our first development gala in a few years.

Every swimmer who raced swam a personal best, and more than a third of the team had never raced before!

To pull the squad together in 3 short weeks since being notified that there was an option to rejoin has been a Herculean task, made slightly more challenging by half term absences and sickness.

Thank you to all the swimmers, parents, supporters and Marchant’s Coaches – their bus driver got us up the motorway safely whilst storms battered UK.

Round 2 – Abbey Stadium, Redditch

Having swum too fast in parts of the squad in round 1, CSWPC decided to swim an (even) less experienced team for round 2. With the majority of swimmers racing for the first time ever, or returning to competition after an extended lay off.

The team outperformed expectation across the board. Most notable were the personal best swims, the very low number of technical disqualifications, and some superhuman efforts from our 9 year olds who ended up swimming up age groups to fill gaps.

CSWPC came third with a massive 134 points, which was a fantastic achievement.

At the end of round 2 we are in 6th place overall in the table of 16 teams.

Well done swimmers, parents, coaches – onwards to round 3, on April 9th at our home pool, Leisure@ in Cheltenham.

Round 3 – Leisure@, Cheltenham

A final mix up of squads and swimmers ensured that everyone in the club who was available was considered for selection for the home gala. As is the way there were the usual speeding tickets, so swimmers swimming too fast but still invaluable experience for all.

CSWPC achieved 124 points in this round putting them in 10th place overall in the table after 3 rounds.

Well done everyone who took part and special thanks for the many officials, helpers and runners that are required to run a home gala. Particular thanks to Tony Bliss who stepped up, yet again, in his role as adopted referee and a special mention to Sally Walker who will never forget to print timekeeping slips for a home round again!

Final round is on home ground, Leisure@, but hosted by Tewkesbury.

Round 4 – Leisure@, Cheltenham (Hosts Tewkesbury)

In the final round, fielding a slightly stronger team, we once again demonstrated the depth of talent in CSWPC. Freddie Walker captained the boys team, Eloise Dransfield the girls; both took good care of the younger swimmers an at one point managed to hols the relay team on the blocks while a younger swimmer went to the steps without touching the wall at the end of their replay leg!!! We got 2 points – lightning quick thinking an maturity from the seniors.

Alfie Clarke (multi discipline) was instructed to swim as fast as he could, as it was clear he was going to be too strong for the field but he had never raced before. He delighted spectators and the team by racing what would be a regional qualification time in the 50m free (a bit quick for PGL!).

Three of the younger swimmers (Otto, Poppy and James C) also went too fast, going much quicker than their personal best times ad well inside the 2022 county qualification limits.

CSWPC came second with 153 points.

This meant CSWPC finished 7th in the overall table and qualified for the A final on Saturday 25th June. Click here to see The Finals Draw

Almost every swimmer had personal best times at the recent Gloucester County Championships, but Jack went one better, winning a trio of medals –

Bronze in 50m fly

Silver at 100m freestyle

Gold at 50m free.

Jack has not only achieved a Regional time with his 50m Free race but is currently sat in 21st place,  50m Free – long course, in the National Rankings.

Keep up the good work as the return to competition starts in earnest.
