In 2023, we started fundraising to provide a space where tenants of Cokely Manor could gather together with residents of Arrowsmith Lodge and day program participants to expand their friendships and create joy through various activities and celebrations. A place where we could also invite the greater community in to share in these events and celebrations together. We were successful in laying the foundation in 2025 and this year it became a place for mini music festivals, dog shows, BBQ’s, and even an evening neighbourhood dance party! All under about 6 pop up tents.
This past year we continued fundraising, beer n burgers, campaigns, and so many friends, family, staff, and local businesses giving to help us ‘raise the roof’ on this project. With a budget of just over $202,000, it would have been a long haul to reaching that goal. However, with support from the Y.P. Heung Foundation, becoming a matching donor and completing the gap of $65,000, they brought us to the finish line of Phase 2!
The Y.P. Heung Foundation was established by an immigrant family to return the generosity and acceptance it received from its adopted country of choice. Since the 1960s, the family and its descendants have continued to reside permanently and with undivided loyalty in the beautiful city of Vancouver, situated in their beloved Canada. To show its appreciation, the family has selected three areas of interest for its charitable efforts: Arts + Culture, Education, and Health.
Y.P. Heung was an entrepreneur and an immigrant, who left his native land of China via a long sojourn in Hong Kong. He arrived on the western shores of Canada in the 1960’s, seeking opportunity and freedom—freedom not just for himself, but for his whole family. To his adopted country of Canada, which had welcomed him and his family with open arms and kindness, he and his family are forever grateful for the opportunity and freedom they continue to enjoy to this day. In the conduct of his life, Y.P. Heung subscribed to principles and values that can be summarized simply as the tenet of the “4 H’s”: Hard work, Honesty, Honour and, most importantly, Humility.
Since 2012, the Foundation set up in his name, have provided funding for medical research, the construction of new health-related facilities, and to smaller organizations like Arrowsmith dedicated to helping the more vulnerable members of our community.
“Physical and mental health impact the personal, social, and physical facets of our everyday lives. We envision communities working towards improving health by taking part in maintaining their own health and that of others.”
The Arrowsmith Health Care Society extends are grateful thanks for the investment the Y.P Heung Foundation has made to this Outdoor Event space project expanding our campus of care here in the heart of Parksville.

Now it’s time to ‘raise the roof’!
We’ve been fundraising for 3 years towards completing this space where we can gather all of our residents, tenants, and day participants together outdoors. And a place where we can invite the greater community in to share events, activities, and celebrations with them!
Friends, families, staff, and residents themselves have given generously to this project, paying it forward for future generations. Arrowsmith itself was born out of a community initiative. Over 50 years ago, a small group concerned with lack of housing for Seniors begun gathering support to purchase and build the facilities which started as Arrowsmith Lodge and is now Cokely Manor (assisted living apartments). Answering the need for long-term care in 2005 an additional building was placed on the site, the current Lodge, giving care to 75 residents. Expanding their support into the Oceanside community, an adult day program (ADP) now gives a day of social interaction to more than 50 Seniors weekly, also supporting their caregivers with a day of respite.
NOW, we need partners to invest in this outdoor event space, an investment that will provide community connections to this campus of care for the future.

In that time, our outdoor gatherings and celebrations, utilizing the parking lot or setting up around the orchard trees, have continued to show us the need is great for a safe, level, and covered area outside. In those 2 years we have raised funds to complete the first phase, a concrete platform with pathway access from both facilities, and all foundational supports in place (electrical, irrigation, post fittings etc.).
We broke ground on Tuesday, August 5th, removing the old gazebo and concrete pathways. Construction continues now on the foundation and new pathways. We are hoping to host our Grand Parade fundraiser celebration event on this new platform September 20th!
