The Chancellor, Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti, Aare Afe Babalola, has advised medical doctors against complacency and negligence in the course of their duties.

Babalola, who advised doctors “to shun all acts associated with laziness, redundancy and complacency”, said they should instead continue to learn and stay abreast of developments in the medical field and their application in treating patients.

The ABUAD chancellor, according to a statement from the university made available on Saturday, spoke in Ado Ekiti during the induction and oath-taking ceremony for the institution’s eighth set of Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery graduands by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria.

He told the newly inducted doctors, “You must continue to read and work hard. This your first degree must not be the last; continue to read more. You have received the best education from the best institution around. You must keep reading and learning. All of these are part of my hidden secrets to you; you can never buy them in any open market.

“As medical practitioners, you must be accommodating. Don’t count anybody unimportant in your line of service. Besides, you must be loving. You must be caring, and you must be well-dressed at all times. Above all, you must regard everybody, especially patients, and give them hope for life,” he said.

Babalola hailed students and products of the university for making a difference, saying, “No graduate of ABUAD has ever graduated without proving his or her mettle anywhere they find themselves, both within and outside the country.

“You must continue to use all the knowledge gained from this university by being different at all times. Imbibe the spirit of all the things that you have learned,” the nonagenarian said, adding that at his age he still worked and read for many hours a day.

ABUAD Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Smaranda Olarinde, advised the new medical doctors to remember the chancellor’s counsel that “you must be kind to your patients. You must love them, share in their pains and provide them comfort. Let them feel that they can still make it. Give them hope.”

Olarinde said, “Today is undeniably historic because 26 of our inductees collectively earned 64 distinctions, a remarkable achievement that attests to the culture of excellence defining our institution.

“With this induction, ABUAD is steadily contributing to the pool of enviable medical doctors trained, equipped and confident to transform the healthcare ecosystem in Nigeria and beyond.”

She said that since the commencement of the medical programme in 2011, the university had “maintained uninterrupted academic sessions while forging strategic partnerships with world-class institutions, including Johns Hopkins Hospital, USA; Marengo Asia Hospitals; and Cherami Investment Group.”

The Acting Provost, ABUAD College of Medicine and Health Sciences, Dr Louis Odeigah, also counselled the newly inducted doctors against negligence.

Odeigah, who said that social media was awash with issues of medical negligence in Nigeria, charged the inductees: “You must run as fast as you can from medical negligence. Your training has equipped you with what it takes to avoid medical negligence — effective communication, good bedside manners, ethical practice, empathy and a culture of accurate documentation.”

The guest lecturer at the occasion, a Professor of Medicine at the Jos University Teaching Hospital, Prof Basil Okeahialam, counselled the newly inducted doctors “to have a high sense of responsibility, not giving room to accusations of negligence.”

Legal icon and founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), Aare Afe Babalola, has expressed the university’s readiness to find a lasting solution to Cancer treatment.

Speaking during the signing of an ambitious Memorandum of Understanding with a Chinese firm, Cherami-PV Group, Babalola declared that the university is ready to deploy artificial intelligence-driven solutions for early detection and treatment of breast cancer.

The founder said cancer, like other complex diseases, could be defeated through sustained research, collaboration and determination.

He said,  “With the partnership, a cure for cancer is achievable”, describing the deadly disease as one of the greatest health challenges confronting humanity.

The ABUAD Vice-Chancellor, Professor Smaranda Olarinde, said that the partnership was aimed at addressing one of Nigeria’s most pressing public health challenges.

Prof. Olarinde said the partnership would leverage the AI-enabled breast imaging to improve early diagnosis, enhance accuracy and expand access to quality screening, stressing that technology would complement, not replace, medical expertise.

The VC who described the partnership as a model for impactful collaboration between academia, healthcare and industry, noted that the pilot phase of the project would ensure ethical compliance, capacity building and evidence-based implementation.

She expressed confidence that the partnership would deliver measurable benefits to Ekiti State, serve as a model for similar collaborations across Nigeria and Africa, and ultimately contribute to saving lives, advancing knowledge and strengthening global partnerships.

Giving the technical details on the agreement, the CMD of ABUAD Hospital, Dr. Akinola Akinmade, disclosed that about 32,000 women are diagnosed with the disease annually, while no fewer than 16,000 die each year and 42 women die every hour.

He described cancer as one of the leading causes of death in Nigeria, with breast cancer posing a particularly grave threat to women.

Akinmade said early detection remained critical to reversing the ugly trend, noting that the partnership between ABUAD and Cherami-PV group would deploy artificial intelligence to enable rapid and accurate diagnosis.

The CMD added that the initiative would also provide telemedicine support to complement ABUAD’s existing manpower, improve clinical decision-making and strengthen capacity building for healthcare professionals.

The co-founder of Cherami Investment, Prof. Wei Xiaolin, expressed delight over the partnership, describing ABUAD as one of the most outstanding academic and medical institutions in Sub-Saharan Africa.

He said that the decision to partner with ABUAD was informed by the university’s unparalleled reputation for innovation, research excellence and its consistent delivery of world-class healthcare services.

Adeyemo, a family medicine specialist and owner of Lakewood Family Clinic, Maryland, United States, said the gesture was her modest way of giving back to an institution that had continued to save lives in seemingly hopeless situations, including her own.

Speaking during the presentation of the equipment in Ado-Ekiti over the weekend, Adeyemo recalled that she once received treatment at the hospital after suffering a massive stroke, describing the care she got from the hospital’s staff as uncommon and life-saving.

She said the hospital played a critical role in her recovery, adding that her donation was inspired by the need to contribute to the development of Ekiti State and Nigeria’s healthcare sector rather than wait for what the country could offer her.

“I am a Family Medicine Specialist and a Medical Facility Owner and Operator in the United States of America.

“A few years ago, I was brought to this facility, Afe Babalola Multi-System Hospital, where I received a kind of uncommon courtesy from the staff of the Hospital”.

At that time, I suffered from a massive stroke. I was attended to by some concerned and altruistic people and institutions, including Afe Babalola Hospital, which played a critical role in my recovery”, she added.

The Afe Babalola University Multi-System Hospital (AMSH), Ado-Ekiti, has recorded another major breakthrough in Nigeria’s healthcare sector with the successful completion of 40 kidney transplant surgeries, positioning the institution among the leading renal transplant centres in the country.

The Chief Medical Director of AMSH, Dr Akinola Akinmade, disclosed this at the weekend during a press briefing held at the hospital, where he outlined a series of milestones that underscored the institution’s growing reputation as a centre of excellence for advanced medical care.

Akinmade said the renal transplant programme, which has continued to expand steadily, boasts an impressive success rate comparable to those of internationally recognised centres.

He attributed the feat to the expertise of the hospital’s multi-disciplinary teams and the strong institutional support provided by its founder, Aare Afe Babalola, SAN and the university management.

Akinmade said, “As of today, AMSH has successfully completed a total of 40 kidney transplant surgeries. This is a remarkable achievement by any standard and reflects the strength of our surgical teams, nephrology units, critical care specialists and the seamless collaboration across departments.”

He noted that the hospital’s partnership with Marengo Asia Hospitals has played a critical role in strengthening local capacity, enabling AMSH to deliver complex procedures while simultaneously equipping Nigerian clinicians with advanced hands-on experience.

Beyond renal care, the CMD revealed that AMSH is rapidly emerging as a regional hub for advanced urological surgeries, offering procedures that remain unavailable in many parts of West Africa.

According to him, the hospital has, in recent months, successfully carried out multiple Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP) procedures, a minimally invasive surgery for men suffering severe urinary obstruction, with excellent clinical outcomes.

Akinmade also announced the hospital’s readiness to commence complex urethral reconstruction surgeries, describing them as highly specialised interventions that further elevate AMSH’s clinical and academic profile in reconstructive urology.

In another landmark achievement, he disclosed that AMSH recently performed its first successful penile implant surgery, restoring sexual and reproductive function to a patient who had battled longstanding erectile dysfunction.

“This milestone places AMSH among the few institutions in Nigeria capable of offering such advanced and life-changing procedures,” he said.

While commending the commencement of commercial flight operations at the Ekiti State airport, the medical expert appealed to politicians and others to shun medical tourism abroad and take advantage of the opportunities of the airport to visit the airport for their medical treatment.

The CMD further highlighted significant progress in the hospital’s cardiac surgery programme, describing it as an indigenous success story.

He recalled that the hospital’s early open-heart surgeries were conducted entirely by foreign teams, but noted that AMSH has now built the capacity of Nigerian specialists to independently handle complex cardiac procedures.

The CMD described the development as a testament to deliberate investment in local expertise and visionary leadership, adding that AMSH is now one of the few centres in West Africa where Nigerian heart surgeons are confidently and consistently performing high-level cardiac surgeries.

He emphasised that AMSH remains committed to a compassionate, patient-centred care philosophy while building a sustainable and globally competitive model of African healthcare.

“Together, we are writing a bold new chapter in Nigerian and African healthcare, a chapter defined by excellence, innovation and hope,” he said.

Speaking, the Vice Chancellor of ABUAD, Professor Smaranda Olarinde, commended AMSH for always leading in medical breakthroughs in Nigeria, saying that needless foreign medical tourism can be controlled with concerted efforts.

She also appreciated the Marengo Asia Hospital team for deeming it fit to transfer expertise to the Nigerian experts working in AMSH.

On his part, the Chairman of Urology & Renal Transplant at Marengo Asia Hospital and head of the foreign team, Dr Rajiv Sood, commended ABUAD for its state-of-the-art facilities and 24-hour operation, which distinguishes it from many public hospitals.

He revealed that a Nigerian patient has travelled from her New York, United States base to the hospital for the surgery, saying, ” that is a remarkable milestone for the ABUAD hospital.

“There is a clear difference between travelling economy class and business class. In both cases, you eventually arrive at your destination, but the experience is not the same. What we are saying here is that Nigerians are being offered business-class quality of service at economy-class rates in ABUAD hospital. That is the difference.”

The Board of Trustees (BOT) of ABUAD Multi-System Hospital Ado-Ekiti, AMSH, has
appointed Dr. Akinola Akinmade, as the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the eight-year-
old frontline Hospital.
The appointment has since taken effect from June 1, 2025.An Orthopaedic, Trauma
Surgeon, Akinmade succeeds Prof. Kolawole Olubunmi Ogundipe, a Professor of Plastic
Surgery.
With this appointment, Akinmade has become the Hospital’s third substantive CMD
after Prof. Fola Esan and Ogundipe who bowed out of office last month (May 2025).
A seasoned Physician Executive who has distinguished himself in Clinical Care,
Academic Medicine and Healthcare Administration, Akinmade holds a Bachelor of
Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, a
Master of Health Administration from Cornell University, Ithaca, New York and a Master

The Procedure was carried out on a lady who had been complaining of severe headache on one side of her head for about three years and had been to various medical facilities and spiritual homes.

The lady who has not been able to talk, walk or conscious of her environment for three months was diagnosed as a case of a huge brain tumor located at the base of the skull when she was brought to the Hospital. She had a successful surgical procedure on Friday, and by the next Monday she started walking, talking and fully conscious of her whereabouts.

The beauty of the treatment was that the patient was discharged after spending 10 days on admission. By this successful operation, ABUAD Multi System Hospital has positively demonstrated its ability and capability to solve issues of brain tumor as a result of which Nigerians no longer need to travel abroad for the sake of Brain surgery.

The surgery was performed by a team led by Dr Abiodun Okunlola,a distinguished Neurosurgeon.This team has carried out various brain and spine surgeries in children and adults including correction of birth and vascular defects of the Central Nervous System, repair of traumatic brain injuries and excision of brain tumor as in this case.

Narrating her experience, she was full of effusive praise and appreciation for the Medical team that attended to her. Her words: “The way I was treated and attended to here has been most encouraging.
