Superior?

Well, here we are. Again.

The latest clone saga gave the Marvel Universe Doctor Octopus back once again, after he was “killed off” at the close of the Superior arc. It was something that I definitely liked, since Doc Ock is arguably Spidey’s greatest foe, and his rogues gallery just wasn’t the same without him. Also, I didn’t care for Superior Spider-Man.

While I think most Spidey fans who felt the same would probably say that they didn’t like Superior because it wasn’t the “real” Peter Parker, I didn’t like it mainly because I like Ock so much. He’s a great villain who’s a legit classic. And again, one of the best Spider-Man has. The returned version might not have been as cool as his iconic form, but at least he was back. Now he’s set to disappear again.

For some reason we’ve yet to learn, Otto will be leaving behind his purely villainous form to once again become Superior. The book will dawn in December with a fresh #1, and come from the team of Christos Gage and Marvel-exclusive artist Mike Hawthorne.

“I’m more than thrilled to renew my exclusive with the folks at Marvel,” Hawthorne said. “I want to emphasize folks’ here, as I think we often talk about Marvel as this big entity that just makes things happen. Marvel, to me, is the people that work day in and day out to try to make the best comics they can. They’re the ones that keep me coming back. I’m ecstatic to dedicate the next few years of my creative energies to adding to the Marvel Universe!”

That’s a lot of Spider-Men

With Superior Spider-Man, that’ll mean that there are no fewer than five Spider-Men running around in the Marvel U. Spidey of course you know, but there there’s also Ben Reilly. Kaine, Miles Morales, and now Otto Octavius.

It’s possible that the Spider-Geddon event will whittle that number down a little, but as of right now it seems like it’s just too many Spideys. So could that mean that Otto won’t be a Spider for all that long? Well, Marvel does tease that Otto’s brush with Spider-dom might not end well.

Cross your fingers, I guess.

Under the spectacular storytelling of Gage and Hawthorne, Otto will prove (one way or the other) that he’s the most effective Super Hero in the world! And if you think you’ve already read the most intense Superior Spider-Man story? Think again. This is a tale like none other!

“I had the great pleasure of collaborating with Dan Slott on his incredible Superior Spider-Man run, and I can’t wait for people to see this new chapter in Otto’s journey toward… redemption? Corruption? Triumph? Tragedy? That remains to be seen,” Gage shared with Marvel.com. “What I can tell you is that the appropriately superior artistic team of Mike Hawthorne, Wade Von Grawbadger, and Jordie Bellaire — titans of their field, all — are absolutely killing it on the art.”

Still here? Okay good, cause there a lot happening here and I have no idea what it is. ‘Dead No More’ certainly says a lot when coupled with the images containing many of Spider-Man’s departed cast. You’ve got Doc Ock in there, Electro, Prowler, and even the 616 version of freaking Gwen Stacy!

So is there a hell of a lot of retconning about to happen (and I mean more than usual)? Is Peter Parker’s whole life, post high school, a lie? And if it is, who’s been pulling the strings on all this, and why? I mean really, that’s a monstrous task right there… And while we’re at it, who’s that guy at the end in the Anubis helm?

Anubis, by the way, isn’t just cool-looking. He’s also an Egyptian god very much associated with passing into the afterlife. So that alone says a ton and a half and might hint at Spidey’s friends and enemies raising from their graves.

Superior Spider-Man’s days might be numbered in the comic books, but Diamond Select Toys has a brand new action figure of the Doc. Ock-possessed Spider-Man on the way as a Disney Store exclusive. Fans won’t have to wait long to get their hands on one either, as the figure is expected in stores and online this week.

“It’s a known fact that I’m a huge fan of Spider-Man,” said Diamond Select Toys President Chuck Terceira, “so the opportunity to make a new, more current Spider-Man figure for the Disney Store was a dream come true. Their support of the line makes great figures like this possible, and Sam really knocked this figure out of the park.”

Sculpted by Sam Greenwell, the figure stands in at 7″ and sports an impressive 16 points of articulation. Packed in with Superior Spidey is also a line-staple in the form of a very cool display base that shows off the aftermath of a battle with the revamped (and Ock-less) Sinister Six. As for the depiction itself, this is the first incarnation of Spider-Man while possessed by Octavius and he has the black and red color scheme (instead of the more familiar ‘Amazing’ blue and red) and the somewhat creepy faceted eyes that Ock installed in the suit.

Personally I’ll always have a soft spot for the bloated, white suit wearing Doc Ock from the ’90s. Whatever look you prefer for the villain though, that green lab outfit is pretty iconic.

The “Superior” third printing of Amazing Spider-Man #700, which is the controversial last issue of the book by the way, features an amazing (ahem) cover by the spectacular (double ahem) Giuseppe Camuncoli.

Inside the book, you’ll still find the same landmark story by Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos that was released into stores a few months back. And however you feel about the ultimate (?) fate of both Spider-Man and Doctor Octopus, this is without a doubt one of the most pivotal and important Spidey tales in the history of the character.

You’ll get your third chance to grab Amazing Spider-Man #700 when the third printing hits stands on March 27th.

Putting Spider-Man in charge of a team kinda reminds me of the Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends show from years ago… and of course the classic Marvel Team-Up series (is that still around?). And I have to add that it’s pretty cool to see Wolverine in his old ‘brown and yellow’ outfit. I always had a soft spot for that costume.

I’m not going to put any Superior spoilers in here (just in case you missed ASM #700), but I think I’m safe in saying that this isn’t your father’s Spider-Man anymore.

I can’t say I’m in love with what writer Dan Slott is doing with the character (or characters, plural, if you catch my drift…) but it seems like this is one plot line that’s far from over. The new teaser image shows Spider-Man in his ‘superior’ uniform with the Avengers looking on disapprovingly and the word ‘FIRED’ stamped across the page.

Spidey as a core Avenger (he’s been a ‘back up’ forever) was always something I had a problem with. I like him as an independent hero with no hard and fast allegiances to any team, so personally (if he does indeed get the axe) I like this move.

This move. …As far as the more (shall we say…) controversial aspects of the current version of the character, I’ll reserve judgement on those till I see where all this is headed.
