]]>The CIPTEC “Toolbox for Public Transport innovation” aims to empower Public Transport stakeholders to adopt a more favourable approach towards innovation in the Public Transport sector. It attempts to capture the generated knowledge and provide strategy advice on innovation introduction to Public Transport stakeholders.
The CIPTEC Toolbox is delivered under three different versions:
- Full version report (see relevant Deliverable D5.1)
- Booklet version report
- On-line digital tool
The“Innovation Flow”proposed by CIPTEC maps the toolbox and provides a graphical representation of the process that anyone can follow in order to introduce innovative concepts and solutions to stimulate innovation in Public Transport.
The activities in the ‘vertical’ columns indicate the steps that should be taken to plan a structured strategy for the promotion, adoption and implementation of innovation.
The activities in the ‘horizontal’ bars represent actions that could be either applied as stand-alone steps towards the final aim of innovation promotion, or implemented in order to serve the targets of the ‘vertical’ actions. The activities in the horizontal bar form a grid together with the activities in the vertical columns, which flows from left to right.
The ‘Innovation Flow’ adopts an integrated approach and favours its realisation in a variety of applied areas and topics, such as: (i) marketing, (ii) consumer behaviour, (iii) innovation and (iv) evaluation.
The CIPTEC online Toolbox is a mobile (or tablet) device friendly platform, a ‘living product’ specifically designed for web interaction. It provides information on the adoption, introduction and implementation of innovations in the Public Transport sector. Through a dynamic tool, anyone can identify the innovative concepts that suit his/her case-specific needs and requirements. Search can be filtered by using an interactive tool in the platform. Toolbox users can select the attributes of their application context by applying one or more filters, such as: Reference context, Category, Transport mode, Goals, Needs, Trends.

In total, around 70 participants from several European countries attended the Conference and had the opportunity to learn about CIPTEC activities and results. The Conference started at 09:30 with the registration and ended at 16:15 with a networking closing drink session, accompanied with some live band music. Prof. Aristotelis Naniopoulos (CIPTEC coordinator) welcomed the participants and gave an overview of all previous CIPTEC activities, summarising the main findings and insights at the closure of this project.
During the interview-style discussion moderated by Mr. Geert Kloppenburg, the leader of each Work Package (WP) gave a brief overview of each WP’s achievements, answering to the questions addressed by the moderator. Giving interactively the “true” story of our work, instead of delivering a predefined speech, attracted participants’ interest.
Mr. Antti Vuorela from the Helsinki Region Transport was the 1st invited keynote speaker, who gave the presentation entitled “How to get instant feedback from your customers: Digital Dialogue Helsinki”. Mr. Vuorela focused on the needs of the customers, mentioning several innovative examples of speeding up feedback to end-users or staff, for example by using smartphones, big data and QR codes.
The 2nd keynote speaker: Dr. Niels van Oort from TU Delft presented “The opportunities of ICT/IoT applications in Public Transport”. Dr. Niels van Oort stressed that the main stream innovations are in the area of automation, sharification and electrification and data & trends can be used to understand, predict and improve the service quality.
The 3rd keynote speaker: Mrs Isabelle Vandoorne from DG MOVE explained in an interview-style discussion with Mr. Geert Kloppenburg the European Commission’s perspective on innovation in transport.
Two interactive sessions ran in parallel in two different rooms and participants were divided in two groups.
At the one session, the workshop entitled “Collective intelligence-user co-created innovation-methods” and the workshop entitled “Nudging people towards public transport-an experimentally-tested intervention to increase public transport use” took place.
During the first workshop, we highlighted how we have involved the end users in the CIPTEC project and which methods we have used. Mrs. Afroditi Stamelou from AUTh delivered an overall presentation regarding CIPTEC experience on collective innovation approaches (co-creation workshops and crowdsourcing campaigns). Next, Mr. Giannis Kostopoulos and Mr. Simone De Ioanna from White Research moderated the discussion among the audience and the CIPTEC partners (in particular, AUTh, Tiemme, MRDH and traffiQ) that implemented collective intelligence initiatives.
During the second workshop, Samuel Franssens gave an introductory presentation regarding nudging concept and application examples of it in Public Transport, while Mrs. Willie De Swart from MRDH/RET explained the field experimentation that was realised in Rotterdam. After this presentation, prof. Aristotelis Naniopoulos of AUTh shortly presented the conjoint analysis that revealed hidden consumer segments and their preferences towards innovation, which was conducted in the frame of CIPTEC.
At the parallel session, the workshop entitled “CIPTEC innovation tools-a key to better transport” and the workshop entitled “Breaking down silo thinking by learning from other sectors” took place.
During the first workshop, Mr. Ilias Trochidis from Tero presented the Crowdsourcing platform and Mr. Saverio Gini from MemEx demonstrated the CIPTEC digital Toolbox. The participants had the opportunity to go through these tools and explore new solutions that might help them to innovate in their city. Mr. Evangelos Genitsaris from AUTh moderated the interactive session of the workshop with the key participation of Mr. Giorgio Ambrosino and Mr. Johannes Bardong who described their experiences on using both CIPTEC tools on behalf of Tiemme and traffiQ, respectively.
The second workshop was moderated by Mr. Otto Cazemier from Mobycon and included a panel discussion on how social innovation has been successful in some areas took place, mentioning among others, some examples of Community Transport Schemes in UK, Ireland, and The Netherlands, as well as examples coming from other sectors. Additionally, during the discussion, Mentimeter allowed delegates to raise comments and suggestions to aid moderator and keep the flow of the discussion interactive. In that way, everyone could see right away what the opinion in the room was on various issues which enriched the discussion.
The two Interactive sessions A and B were repeated later on for the participants that had attended sessions B and A, respectively, previously.
During the afternoon plenary session, inputs from the interactive sessions were gathered to fuel a wrap-up panel discussion. The panel consisted of Dr. Jon Lamonte (Chairman of EMTA, CEO of TfGM), Mr. Freek Bos (from the European Passengers’ Federation), Mr. Piotr Rapacz (from the DG Mobility and Transport), prof. Aristotelis Naniopoulos (from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, CIPTEC Coordinator), Ms. Luana Bidasca (from Polis), and Dr. Niels Van Oort (from TU Delft).
At the end of the Conference, the CIPTEC experience and day’s discussions were used to debate on statements relevant to the development of public transport. During this interactive activity, participants voted how much they agree or disagree with selected positions. The Conference closed with the wish of exploiting CIPTEC outcomes after project’s end in the most effective way in order to make public transport more innovative in European Cities.

]]>CIPTEC had active presence during the conference as six full papers have been accepted in total after peer-review for oral (3 papers) and poster (3 papers) presentation. Additionally, prof. Aristotelis Naniopoulos of AUTh (the CIPTEC coordinator) disseminated CIPTEC project by giving a short presentation and by presenting the CIPTEC project’s video at the EC’s stand in the exhibition area of TRA.
The first paper presentation was entitled “Developing the CIPTEC toolbox for the promotion of Public Transport Innovation”. Mr. Evangelos Genitsaris, the CIPTEC Deputy Project Manager (coming from AUTh/TSRG team), delivered the presentation on the CIPTEC Toolbox and tried to familiarize the audience with the online tool and its features.
Mr. Evangelos Genitsaris also presented the second paper presentation, entitled “Evaluation of innovative ideas for Public Transport proposed by citizens using Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA)”, explaining the assessment process of selected ideas resulted from the collective intelligence’s processes, by using a Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) method, in particular the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP).
The third paper presentation, entitled “Investigating the preferences of individuals on Public Transport innovations using the Maximum Difference Scaling method” was delivered by Dr. Dimitrios Nalmpantis (AUTh/TSRG team). Dr. Nalmpantis presented the process and the results of a survey, carried out within CIPTEC project, which aimed to measure Public Transport users’ preferences along specific innovations.
During the Conference’s poster sessions other three CITPEC full papers were presented. Mr. Ilias Trochidis, coming from Tero (CIPTEC partner), presented the poster entitled “Crowdsourcing for Innovation in Public Transport: planning, implementation and results of five different campaigns in Europe”, which discussed the crowdsourcing initiatives within CIPTEC and highlighted the strengths and the weaknesses of their implementation in five different European contexts.
Prof. Aristotelis Naniopoulos presented the poster entitled “Co-creating innovation: concepts and ideas for Public Transport resulted through participatory processes applied in four different urban areas of Europe”. This poster discussed, the process and findings of the eight co-creation workshops implemented within CIPTEC project, as a mean to enable creative thinking and exploit the “collective intelligence” of the participants.
Finally, Mr. Otto Cazemier, coming from Mobycon (CIPTEC partner), participated in the conference by delivering a poster presentation entitled “Reviewing and assessing existing innovations with high potential for higher public transport use, with special focus on Mobility as a Service (MaaS)”. Mr. Otto Cazemier presented an in-depth discussion of MaaS and its practical application in the Netherlands, linking the topic with insights derived from the CIPTEC project.

]]>Ms. Afroditi Stamelou delivered a short presentation of CIPTEC project, highlighting its main goals and achievements and demonstrated the CIPTEC video which attracted the interest of the audience. Participants were invited to attend the CIPTEC Final Conference, which is planned to take place on the 24th of April at Brussels.
The outputs of the INNOTRANS project aim to help Regions interested in focusing on transport innovation. INNOTRANS project will map regional transport innovation capacity and identify the competitive advantage of the regions.
The CIPTEC coordinator, prof. Aristotelis Naniopoulos, together with the INNOTRANS project’s partners, discussed and investigated potential synergies between the two projects, that both aim at the enhancement and introduction of the transport innovation.

]]>Top experts on these fields were invited and delivered inspiring and motivating speeches, presenting interesting initiatives of social entrepreneurship and transport in general. The two-day workshop included both lecture-style presentations and interactive sessions attended by the invited speakers and the CIPTEC project’s members.
Prof. Aristotelis Naniopoulos (CIPTEC coordinator) welcomed the participants and gave a quick overview of the previous CIPTEC activities and the next steps towards the closure of the project. Ms. Stella Printezi, Programme Manager of Ashoka (Greek chapter) presented the objectives of the Ashoka organization, a key NGO promoting social entrepreneurship worldwide, with the aim of succeeding gradually and through it changes of the systems and the frameworks themselves. Prof. Susan Grant-Muller from the University of Leeds, as coordinator of EMPOWER Horizon 2020 project, presented the potential of the sharing economy and social innovation to act as positive incentives for the sustainable urban mobility, as it was investigated within EMPOWER project. Mr. Brian Masson, Transport expert of Ortelio Ltd. with long professional and managerial experience on Public Transport, demonstrated the Community Transport concept and the concept of Social Public Partnerships as they are applied in Scotland. Public Social Partnerships comprise a strategic partnering arrangement, which involves the third sector earlier and more deeply in the design and commissioning of public transport services. Mr. Norman Baker, ex Minister of Transport in UK and currently Managing Director of The BigLemon, introduced the BigLemon initiative to the audience, which aims to enable everyone to move within their community in an affordable, enjoyable and environmentally-friendly way. The 2030 vision of The BigLemon is every community in the UK to have access to affordable and sustainable transport services, running with zero-emissions vehicles that are powered by renewable energy and owned by the local community.
Next, the four CIPTEC project partners who implemented the local workshops on ‘social entrepreneurship/social innovation and Public Transport’ in Thessaloniki, Rotterdam, Southern Tuscany and Frankfurt provided their feedback, as “food for thought” for the interactive workshop’s sessions that followed. The first day ended with the first interactive session in which participants were divided into two groups and were asked to investigate solutions and opportunities for covering important needs in Public Transport by promoting social innovations and encouraging the creation of social enterprises.
The presentations of the second day were more “good practices” oriented and some remarkable examples of initiatives with high social value, potential and impact were presented. Mr. Konstantinos Laliotis, founder of the ‘AccessPal wheelchair navigator’, explained how the AccessPal crowdsourcing platform works, offering accessibility and navigation services for people using a wheelchair. By using open data, the platform aims to comprise a smart mobility tool and promote social innovation. Mrs. Delphine Grandsart, Transport expert of European Passengers’ Federation presented the ‘Public Transport buddies’ project, which is a social initiative of the Belgian passengers’ organisation, “Treintrambus”. The project is about developing a voluntary service to assist people with disabilities in travelling by Public Transport. Mr. Marcel Meeuwissen, Senior Consultant Smart Mobility & Cities – City of Enschede presented the EMPOWER project’s ICT tools and the application that encouraged people to change their travel behaviour and choose more environmentally friendly mobility modes by providing incentives to them. Mr. Athanasios Skordas, employee at the Occupational Safety and Health Department at Thessaloniki Urban Transport Organisation (OASTh) presented to the audience the initiative of providing training on safe bus usage to primary school students that was implemented by the employees’ syndicate of the Thessaloniki bus operator.
The second day included two fruitful interactive discussion sessions. During the first one, the participants were asked to identify the most crucial barriers and obstacles for the development of social innovations and the launching of social enterprises tackling the challenges identified in the previous day’s session. During the last session, participants were asked to formulate a framework of key suggestions on policy measures that could favour the entering of Social Enterprises in the Public Transport sector.
After the end of each one of the three breakout sessions, participants evaluated using the “Dot voting” method the outcomes of their discussion table in order to identify the most interesting and crucial ones for introducing Social Innovation and involving Social Entrepreneurs in Public Transport sector. The outcomes of each group were presented during the plenary discussions after each session. By the closure of the workshop, participants filled in an evaluation questionnaire assessing the workshop’s process and facilities.
To conclude, interesting findings emerged from the discussions and useful policy recommendations were suggested by the participants. As far as the workshop’s evaluation is concerned, the majority of the participants were satisfied both with the workshop’s topic and its organisational aspects.

The ideas gathered through the campaign were evaluated by both the users of the crowdsourcing platform and an ad-hoc jury committee of experts in the fields of transport and innovation. In particular, during the whole duration of the contest (October 2016 – March 2017), each registered user was able to evaluate the ideas by giving 1 to 5 stars rates. Afterwards, the top ranked ideas were assessed by an experts’ committee against their feasibility, utility and innovativeness.
Based on the aforementioned evaluation procedure, the first winning idea is the “BLIMP Bus Lane (Bus Lane with Intermittent Priority)” submitted by Mr. Anastasios Skoufas, an undergraduate engineering student. The BLIMP Bus Lane (Bus Lane with Intermittent Priority) provides an exclusive bus lane whenever needed. More specifically, the bus lane remains open for the general purpose traffic, but when a bus is detected the lane becomes a temporary bus lane. After delivering a short presentation of the concept, the winner received his award from Mr. Ruud van der Ploeg, General Secretary of European Metropolitan Transport Authorities (EMTA), and a tablet, that was offered by the sponsor, MLS Multimedia S.A., a Greek interactive media technology provider.
The second ranked idea is the “Incentive for Open Data for all public transport companies“, which stresses the significance of providing support and incentives to Public Transport companies in order to share their data with every interested person and party. The initiator of this idea, Mr. Simon Rosseel a software developer in the ICT department of the University college of Kortrijk, being invited by the consortium at the CIPTEC workshop, received his award from Prof. Aristotelis Naniopoulos, the CIPTEC coordinator after presenting briefly his concept to the audience.
The implementation of such concepts relies upon the willingness of the Public Transport Authorities and Operators who have to become more innovative and positive to novel approaches in order to face the present and future challenges of the urban mobility scene.

]]>The CIPTEC local workshop on social entrepreneurship at Thessaloniki, entitles “Social Innovation/Entrepreneurship and Public Transport in Cities: Identifying barriers and opportunities”, was held on 20th of October, 2017. The participatory workshop was organised by AUTh and took place at the co-working space of OK!Thess initiative.
A warm welcome was made by Prof. Aristotelis Naniopoulos (CIPTEC coordinator) who inform the participants about the previous CIPTEC activities and the next steps towards the closure of the project. Thereafter, Mr. Evangelos Genitsaris delivered an introductory presentation on the workshop’s topic that included, among others, selected good example mobility-related practices in the field of Social Entrepreneurship/Innovation, as well as the basic terms and concepts with the aim of building a common understanding among the participants. Subsequently, Ms. Afroditi Stamelou explained the agenda, the process and the goals of the workshop.
In total, 22 participants took part in the workshop representing various disciplines, such as urban mobility and transport in general, social entrepreneurship and business management fields. At the beginning of the workshop, participants were divided into three heterogeneous groups. They introduced themselves presenting the activities of the organizations they are coming from and exchanged briefly personal views and experiences on workshop’s topic.
At the first session, participants were asked to investigate solutions and opportunities for satisfying important needs for Public Transport in Greece by developing Social Innovations and encouraging the creation of Social Enterprises. In other words, they identified potential synergies among Social Entrepreneurs and Public Transport focusing mainly on mobility of vulnerable population groups (PT buddies, “last mile” transport, etc.), information provision to vulnerable social population groups, mobility for all (overcoming the ‘transport poverty’) and environmental protection.
At the next session, the composition of the groups was rearranged and the participants, as members of new teams, were asked to identify the most crucial barriers for the development of Social Innovations and the launching of Social Enterprises tackling the challenges that were identified in the previous session. They were asked, also, to formulate a framework of key suggestions on policy measures that could favour the entering of Social Enterprises in the Public Transport sector in Greece.
After the presentation of all the workshop’s outcomes during a plenary discussion, participants evaluated them in order to identify the most interesting and crucial ones for introducing Social Innovation and involving Social Entrepreneurs in Public Transport sector. “Dot voting” method was used for this purpose. By the closure of the workshop, participants filled in an evaluation questionnaire assessing the workshop’s process and facilities.
To conclude, useful policy recommendations were suggested by the participants, especially regarding legislation issues in order to facilitate the introduction of Social Entrepreneurs in the provision of Public Transport. As far as the workshop’s evaluation is concerned, the majority of the participants were satisfied both from the sessions flow and the organizational aspects of the workshop.

]]>The Fenix Food Factory was an inspiring location, because it is an old porthouse runned by entrepreneurs. The entrepreneurs offer a culinary hotspot, a place to go for good food and to learn about how products are made.
A warm welcome of the participants was offered both by Mr. O. Cazemier (Mobycon), the day chairman and Mrs. H. El Aissati (MRDH), who gave a short presentation about CIPTEC project and the reason why we organized the workshop. About 25 participants from different backgrounds attended the workshop. The group consisted of social entrepreneurs, representatives from the authorities, the public transport operators and other stakeholders. The aim of the workshop within the CIPTEC project was how to involve social entrepreneurs in the Public Transport sector.
In the beginning, participants broke the ice by introducing themselves. After the introduction the invited social entrepreneurs (Talentfabriek010, Biesieklette and Social Impact Factory) got the opportunity to present their organizations.
After the presentation the participants got to work using the world café method. This is a creative process for facilitating collaborative dialogue and sharing of knowledge and ideas to create an evolving network of the conversation and actions mentioned.
In the first round of the workshop, the participants worked in groups with these themes: PT Innovation, PT Improvement and image of public transport.
There were 3 groups and they got the opportunity to discuss the following questions:
- How can social entrepreneurship provide more (social) innovation in public transport?
- How can the involvement of social entrepreneurs improve the public transport for the passengers?
- How can social entrepreneurship provide a better image of the public transport sector?
After each round’s end, participants moved and groups switched to a new table to discuss the previous ideas of the group.
It was concluded that social entrepreneurship practices in the PT sector are most likely to succeed if ‘local’ needs and challenges of the public transport operators are brought together.
After a short break the participants started with the second round. Within this round the opportunities and advantages to involve social entrepreneurs in the public transport sector were discussed. The answers on the following questions were shared with each other:
- What are the opportunities of social entrepreneurship to provide more (social) innovation in public transport?
- What are the opportunities to involve social entrepreneurs to improve public transport for the passengers?
- What are the opportunities of social entrepreneurship to provide a better image of the public transport sector?
The group concluded that someone should start with what the sector or company can do for society, combining that with business issues.
In the last round of the workshop the participants were asked to discuss the following questions:
- What are the barriers of social entrepreneurship and (social) innovation in public transport?
- What are the barriers of involving social entrepreneurs to improve public transport for the passengers?
- What are the barriers preventing social entrepreneurship to provide a better image of the public transport sector?
The participants discussed the solutions to remove the barriers. The conclusion was that the PT sector needs a strategy and policy to cooperate with social entrepreneurs.
After the third round, the results were shared in a plenary wrap up. The participants finished the work by ranking the results by using the evaluation method of ‘dot voting’.
At the end of the workshop participants were asked to fill-in a workshop assessment questionnaire about the organization of the workshop, the provided venue’s facilities, the facilitation team, etc.
All the participants had a positive view about the workshop as a whole and the specific topics that were discussed.

]]>CIPTEC project “Collective Innovation for Public Transport in European Cities” as a member of the CIVITAS family, participated actively in the 15th edition of the CIVITAS FORUM Conference, that took place on 27th-29th September 2017 at Torres Vedras, Portugal.
The annual CIVITAS event brings together the CIVITAS community from across Europe, while the overall Conference theme for 2017 was: “Size doesn’t matter – small communities, big ideas”. Around 500 participants representing a diverse community of policy makers, practitioners, academics, and city representatives convened in Torres Vedras and debated the most pressing issues concerning sustainable urban mobility.
AUTh/TSRG team as CIPTEC Coordinator and Tero Ltd. represented the project by participating in the CIVITAS project coordination meetings and delivering presentations on selected project results.
On 27th of Sep. 2017, CIPTEC joined the very interesting plenary session on the emerging and multidisciplinary topic of ‘Enabling public transport innovation in cities’. The CIPTEC presentation of Dr. Dimitrios Nalmpantis (Lab Teaching Faculty AUTh) and Mr. Evangelos Genitsaris (CIPTEC’s Deputy Project Manager), with the title ‘Applying marketing research methods to investigate users’ preferences regarding Public Transport innovations and revealing hidden groups’ trigger the interest of the audience. The presentation was focused on the design and results of a marketing research oriented survey that was conducted using the method of conjoint analysis with the aim of investigating the preferences of people on certain innovations of Public Transport and revealing possible hidden groups.
The next day, Mr. Ilias Trochidis from Tero Ltd. demonstrated the CIPTEC crowdsourcing campaigns, explaining in brief the process adopted and the outcomes that were resulted, during a special petcha-kucha session, addressed to the visitors of the CIVITAS exhibition area. Mr. Ilias Trochidis expressed the availability of supporting similar campaigns for any interested party, based on the project’s experience and methodology developed.
On 29th of Sep., prof. Aristotelis Naniopoulos (CIPTEC coordinator) delivered the presentation entitled ‘Generating innovation through collective intelligence, crowdsourcing and co-creation’ in the frame of the C3 plenary session under the topic ‘Delivering mobility innovation through organisational culture change, creativity, and collaboration’. The discussion followed among the panelists emphasized on the need of including successfully the customers and the employees in innovation-related procedures by changing the culture within organisations and outside of them.
CIPTEC representatives participated, also, in the annual three CIVITAS Project Coordinators meetings focusing, respectively, on the (i) coordination, (ii) evaluation and (iii) dissemination issues.
During the whole duration of the forum, there was a CIPTEC stand at the exhibition area, where thematic roll-up banners were depicting the main project results and an interim booklet edition produced particularly for the CIVITAS forum 2017, was distributed to any interested visitor.
