It all started with a surprise meeting with a client we hadn’t done much work with the last couple of years. At UTI there were a lot of changes that lead to us not being hired as much to do stuff with, so we were excited to get called back and partner with to create these spots! They were awesome to work with because they let us dream up what we wanted to do and gave us the space to create. They also gave us really good direction and suggestions that really molded the spot to what we have today.

We couldn’t be more proud of these 2 spots, because they not only represent the quality of work we do, but also the renewed partnership with UTI. Here they are and below a couple of stories from production along with the Behind The Scenes video

Community

Soundtrack of the Industry

Day 1

We worked with Tyler Conlin an instructor at UTI and weekend racer to gather some students for us to shoot at Wild Horse Pass, during the Drag and Drift event He delivered! We got some shots of him drag racing but we also were hoping to get some shots of the drifters. Adam (the director) and I walked the pit area to find someone we could talk to about letting us mount a camera in and on his car, and record audio of it as well. So we found the coolest looking car and started talking to Andrew Schulte. When we told him what we were shooting for, he lite up! “I went to UTI!”, he said. We stumbled across a UTI graduate doing what he loved and it couldn’t fit any better with the story we were telling. People that go to UTI are the people that make this industry. If you like this lifestyle, you will benefit from this school. And the kid can drift!

Day 2

We shot at Chapman BMW with another UTI Grad, Leo Franco. Chapman was great, Garrett Odel the Fixed Operations Director really helped us out by allowing us to shoot there. The location was perfect for the closing shot that ties the whole spot together.  The message is if you live this lifestyle – ‘train and make it your career’. Chapman BMW in Chandler couldn’t be a better example of that, they hire almost exclusively UTI Grads.

Day 3

We went up north to go offroading. We had some locations picked out but Adam and I went up early to scout them out and make sure they were going to work with what we were hoping to get. While we were up there we got word from one of our drivers that he couldn’t make it. We started to freak out but started to look for a backup plan. Then the craziest thing happened. A guy we met in our quest to find a backup truck, connected us with his friend who had an expensive truck which he just had washed. The guy gave me his keys and let me drive it. A PERFECT STRANGER. This dude was an angel sent from God. That’s the only logical explanation. We let the client know and they signed off on using the new truck. SO we did the logical next step, find the biggest mud hole and drive right through it! Goodbye clean truck, hello authentic dirty beauty. Everything worked out, we finished returned the truck, with some extra cash for a new wash and we were good!

Day 4

We hooked up with Tyler Chandler and we strapped his car up with an expensive camera that doubled the price of his beemer. It worked out perfectly, the closing shot of the community spot is epic because of it.

Day 5

We needed a garage for the shoot the opening of the spot… so we found one in Wittmann that was perfect… but it was in Wittmann. If you’re unfamiliar with AZ or never heard of Wittmann… It’s almost halfway between Phoenix and Vegas. But we went… because it WAS perfect. The guy that owns it is part of the car club Adam belongs to, and the dude was cool. What wasn’t cool was the garage though. No AC, so we shot early and the swamp cooler kept up enough to make it bearable.  After that, we drove to UTI Avondale and finished the shoot in the Dyno.

Overall, it was epic, and here is the video to prove it!

This is a motorsports lifestyle brand that Adam Fischer developed that he brought Axiom into. Together we’ve come up with some really unique ideas to go after – which I will talk about in a sec, but first watch this video:

If you watched it twice… I don’t blame you. We’ve been coming up with a bunch of concepts and ideas for Clutch. Here are a couple of our more defined projects we’re hoping to find sponsors for in the upcoming months.

Rare Form

This is an idea I had been thinking about for a long time. A couple years ago we filmed Neil Tjin (custom car builder) for a UTI/WD-40 car build they did together. Neil is just one of those guys that when you meet him, he becomes your best friend. He’s all personality and super creative. When I met him I knew we could build a show around him and people would watch. When the idea of Clutch was brought up, I figured this would be a perfect place to house this content.

Here is the trailer we put together for this project:

Kristen Lassen is another personality that was “just right”. Here is a female, Harley Davidson mechanic that’s all heart. Everything she does and is, is an adventure. Her idea for a show came together when we talked about what content we wanted to make together. She made a poll on her Instagram and her followers were interested in a VLOG style format showcasing her day-to-day. Our goal is to shoot some segments with multiple cameras and angles, to combine with her POV style GoPro footage. The end product will be an elevated vlog. Check out the trailer here:

These 2 projects are exciting to us because they feature some pretty remarkable people. People who are full of life and when people are introduced to them, they can’t help but want to learn more about them. Sure, they are enthusiasts in their own industry, but more than that they are normal people, living out their passion. And to us, that’s contagious. We want to share that, and hopefully one of you reading will want us to share it too! Reach out to us if you’re in the market to sponsor any of this content.

Nate VLOGed doing one of his favorite things- “going outside”. This is a shoot day with Visit Arizona and Kristen Keogh . Check him out in his prime – enjoying the outdoors and taking pictures. Here is what he learned from this shoot:

  • GoPro audio sucks – I mean, I already knew this, but I used a GoPro anyways and thought it wouldn’t be the worst thing ever, but the newest GoPro (Hero 6) is especially bad. Every little hand movement translated to the internal mic on the camera. Now I’m looking into external mic options for GoPro, but there aren’t any great options out there, besides using an audio recorder.
  • It was super interesting hanging out and talking with the ladies from Visit Arizona and Visit Phoenix. Learning about their social media strategies, challenges they face, and what types of goals they have was informative to me as a storyteller.
  • I probably should have filmed a little more, but I dunno. I wound up using almost everything I filmed and it came out to 6 minutes, which seems just right.
  • I really like the format that I used for this: Film the setup and environment (the “bts”), then quickly show the result (the pictures). This won’t work for a lot of our shoots because some clients don’t allow us to publicly post our work for them, but for this client, I think it was great.

Also what we learned is that people were having issues with the Vimeo playback for the longer videos, so we moved all our VLOGS to YouTube.

Alltraverse is a wanderlust brand we’ve semi-developed. Every time a client sent us to go shoot out of town, we tried to take an extra day for ourselves to go out and explore that area. We’re hoping to get more opportunities to create travel or location-based content, so we started doing it for ourselves. This has been fun, a lot of fun, and we’ve learned a lot. The main thing we learned: Go with a plan!

When we came up with the concept, we didn’t have a brand, style, vibe… We really didn’t know what we wanted to do. We just knew we were getting sent to locations, we would fly in and out and never get to experience it. So the first thing we did was simply shoot it, and the first location was by accident. We planned an extra day of shooting in Portland because we wanted to pitch an idea to a client. Well, we didn’t use the footage for the pitch and we instead got our first film.

Then we got to work on who we were becoming. We commissioned Kyle Oracion from orange26.com to create a logo for us, and we loved it! We came up with a style… and created a few films, and now we’re recreating our style with a new vibe, you’ll see that in our video we’re currently creating “Phoenix”, which is coming soon.

Go check out our site: Alltraverse.axiommediaproductions.com and you can see some of the videos we created so far.

In the middle of all this “doing”, we met Kristen Keogh. At the time she was one of the weather people for NBC12 in Phoenix and she told me all about an outdoors travel type show that she wants to pitch to her station and others in town. I told her this sounds like it would fit perfectly with the brand we’re developing. Who wouldn’t like to go into nature to capture the beauty and see what those areas have to offer?!  The show is called:

(Click on the image to go to the website)

Here is the sizzle video we put together with Kristen:

We found out there is a lot of interest to put this kind of content on the air so we’re currently looking for sponsors who want to partner with us to create more of this awesome content. Here are a few images that Nate took from out shoot.

I also want to take a moment to thank all the people who have helped us get Alltraverse going. With these types of projects, there’s no budget. So we ask our friends if they want to help and when they say yes, it means a lot. So a big thank you to Ovi Balc who helped on the Portland and Orange County shoot, PJ Szabo who was on the Portland shoot, Adam Fischer who did Pittsburgh and Boston where he crashed his drone for us and helped us really figure out what this whole thing would become, Nate Ellis Who was on Iceland, Orange County, Boston, Pittsburgh, and has been developing the style for the newest direction and has done all the photography for this and the site and Jeremy and Kyli Yerse who helped us create the website. And we also thank our clients whose work has sent us to all these locations, and hopefully more soon!!!

Self shot, with no auto focus, no headphones, and no plan. Enjoy.

We started doing VLOGs this year. And this is my first attempt.

This is what I learned.

  1. Talk more between scenes and explain to the audience where we are, and what we’re doing. A lot of great vloggers can do this without talking… We’re not great vloggers… Yet…
  2. Have a goal. I had a couple goals in this vlog, but my overarching goal for the vlog is for you, the audience to get to know me better. This sounds selfish and egotistical, even as I type, so let me justify it. I lead Axiom, and for better or worse, I’m the person clients meet with and build a relationship with, so this is a great way for a current or potential client to get to know me and my background. I think this vlog did that.
  3. I’m terrible at “first takes”. I did and re-did a bunch of the talking portions. My wife who watches vlogs said, “that’s not vlogging, that’s creating and producing a video”. She’s right. At the end of this thing, I had over 2 hours of footage. I need to get better at shooting the good stuff and not shooting the irrelevant, including all the bad takes of me talking.
  4. I forgot to mention that my wife and immediate family didn’t join me.…….. Oops. My wife stayed home because our puppy (@lakey.doodle) was in heat for the first (and last) time. She was wearing diapers… anyway, we couldn’t just leave her with someone else to take care of. That would be too much.  And my Mom, brother, and sister live in Hawaii, so they didn’t make the trek. I was so preoccupied with getting the camera set up and talking about the reunion, I forgot to mention it.
  5. Vlogging is fun. We need to keep doing it to get better at it and we will. You will see our attempts. Even the ones we fail at.

I love helping clients tell their stories, helping them show their heart and soul to their customers or potential students. But as artists, we also need to tell our own stories. So a few years back I made a 5-year plan on how we would start a transition, that would allow us to tell our own stories. Stories not defined by an agenda or ROI, just our ideas fueled by passion.

But I must admit, it’s been a rocky start.

During the last 3 years, we’ve worked on a few projects, some have come along further than others, but none have made it to “air”. It’s frustrating, but nothing that’s good is easy.

Here are some of the logos of the projects we are working on, either completely on our own or with a partner. These are projects we’re still hoping get funded and we can create a full series or full season.

These are dating shows, travel films, and custom car builder shows… I’ll talk more about them all in future blogs.

But all that to say, I haven’t given up.

Every time I speak specifically about any of these and other similar projects, I light up. That’s how I know this is my passion. To create and develop our own content. That doesn’t mean we don’t like the work our clients give us. It actually means we appreciate it more, because it helps us to continue to pursue our dreams. Those projects help us keep the lights on and we couldn’t be more grateful.

Onward and upward! Thanks for reading.

We planned and saved for this day, so I knew we had a security blanket if all failed, but it was still a crazy, exciting, and nervous time for both of us.

(Here’s a pic of my last day at JR Davis)

Now… when you decide to do something different, people tend to think you want their opinions. During those days, I remember receiving unwarranted advice before resigning from my position as a School Improvement Program Specialist, from people I never asked, telling me how bad of an idea it was to work with your spouse – mind you, from people that did not work with their spouse. But for us, I knew it was the right move. I knew I wasn’t going to have anyone else manage our business’ finances. I was the right fit. (By right fit, I mean being a bit of a control freak, organized and an attention to detail, spreadsheet loving person).

We did get some really great advice from a husband a wife team, (Thanks MOODYS:), that taught us so much; how to work together, how to do it right and how not to kill each other at the dinner table, when you’ve disagreed on business decisions. Yes, that was discussed.:) I knew it was possible to make it work and make it work well, thanks to their advice!

When I first imagined my new role, I pictured, lunches with friends, working at home at my desk, or at a coffee shop, mostly in activewear, multitasking housework and work and weekends would be off. Well some of those dreams did come true – like working in activewear, but others still have not, even after almost 6 years. I rarely do lunch with friends, because um, friends have jobs and don’t have time to brunch!! For many years, we busted our asses and work was definitely not 9 to 5 and weekends were NOT off. There was more work then workers and we had to stay afloat and keep our clients happy, so we WORKED and I do not regret those years. I know from the outside maybe our friends and families thought we were crazy. We had to say a lot of NOs at the time. No to plans, no to dinners out (we were also at the same time going through Dave’s Ramsey’s Baby Steps, so while we were working what felt like nonstop, we were also “living like no one else, so later we could live like no one else”, You know the drill with Dave and if you don’t, LOOK IT UP!! All of this to say, we had some crazy years and I don’t regret the decisions we made at the time to build up the business.

(Gordo decorated the house for my transition)

Now, after 6 years of working together full time, here are my thoughts.

Sometimes I miss the days of happy hour with my colleagues, sometimes going to happy hour with Gordo just isn’t the same as your gal pals at work. Sometimes I miss wearing my “work clothes” ( I do not miss ironing them though:) There is something to having others come to you at work and ask for advice, knowledge and feedback and it gave me a sense of accomplishment when you do work for someone besides yourself. There is a different sense of accomplishment when you own your own business, but it is different then having a community of colleagues working together.

When you work from home, you have to make a conscious decision to seek out time with friends, where in my positions before working from home, they happened naturally with work friends. I do love the flexibility that I have, that I did not have in the education field. I mean, now I can go to the bathroom when I want. If you were ever a teacher, you understand this issue!! But with flexibility comes great responsibility. You have to be self driven, which I am. There is no one pushing you on deadlines, expecting reports or writing up a review. The drive and motivation has to come from within. Some days are harder than others to push yourself, but the drive has to be there.

I think a major part of staying happy in any position is to be constant learner, because the same get’s mundane, so that’s something I keep in the forefront of my mind. Six years ago I had a major learning curve to go through. The job was challenging and new. As I have more knowledge now, my job isn’t as challenging (some things still are – TAX SEASON), But I try and make sure to try to get that challenge elsewhere – a new hobby, a class, something to keep me learning, which is not always easy for an introvert, but I have to make a conscious decision to focus on that.

Overall, working for yourself and with your spouse is NOT for everyone. I really enjoy it and I’m so happy we made the decision to go down this crazy route 6 years ago!

I see a lot of people wanting to jump into the “biggest and baddest” camera and not have any return clients. Don’t do it. Maybe the “biggest and baddest” camera doesn’t fit long term, the type of work you will be doing. You might just need a smaller more versatile/cheaper camera for more of your gigs, and you can rent the big stuff for your larger gigs… Or maybe you are ready for the “biggest and baddest” one now… there’s like 3 or 4 “biggest and baddest”. Don’t just pick the one your favorite blogger/vlogger/cinematographer uses. Rent that one for your next shoot… If you’ve never shot with a camera of that caliber hire a DP that knows what he’s doing to shoot for you. Long term that will be really helpful.

Hire people that know what they’re doing.

When I started I did everything on my own or with 1 other person. I slowly started hiring certain people to do some of the work, but I shied away from hiring pros. Real pros. I figured they couldn’t take direction from an amateur like me… Or maybe I thought “I got here this far I don’t need no pro telling me what to do”… That was a mistake. When I started using pros, man I learned so much more, so much more quickly. I saw how they set up shots, how they lit sets, how they directed, how they collected footage, how they cared about the other players on the team and how they connected with the clients and talked from experience. When you can, even if it costs you money, hire pros, legit pros, not just guys with a demo reel. Guys with long resumes that know what they’re doing. You might hit a couple rotten eggs, but mostly you’ll find people that get it and want to make you look good.

Save as much money as possible, don’t take out debt.

You don’t need to put anything on a credit card or on the store’s credit. This means don’t buy a mac because you get 12 months free interest. If you need to work at a coffee shop long enough to afford a computer, do it. Once you have your computer, hit up an online lens rental place or whatever and rent a cheap camera, or borrow one from a friend and go shoot your reel. Do everything within your means. When you make money, save it. Save as much money as possible. Don’t quit your job until you have enough money to not have to make money for a year. Hopefully while on your job you are also getting gigs, weddings, promo videos, whatever to make money. Save all of it. At some point your gigs will make you enough money to buy a camera, buy the one you use most and find the cheapest one you can buy… used. This is key; If you get into debt, you are needlessly losing money. If you’re already in debt, get out ASAP. I can’t say this enough. Debt is dumb, avoid it because it can crush your growth.

1099 vs Hiring

When you start your company, you might want to hire someone to help you get the work done, wait as long as you can before doing so. Until you actually hire, contract out. Hire contract editors, shooters, PA’s anything to help you get the job done right, for specific projects.

You should answer these questions before you hire. This isn’t full proof but it can help.

1. Do you have enough money in the bank to keep that person employed for a full year, even if the company doesn’t make any money?
2. Does your monthly income exceed what you would pay yourself and your employee and your bills?
3. Have you looked into insurance, workmans comp, and payroll taxes. (We use a company to handle our payroll and payroll taxes, some smarter people could probably do it themselves, we didn’t want to take the risk, especially with all the changing fed and state tax laws)
4. Do you know how much money you pay out to contractors for specific roles? We use Quickbooks, so we know how much we pay a camera operator, an editor, DP, PA… so we know specifically how much we spend a year on certain roles, so when it comes to hiring we know what type of person we need. If you don’t have quickbooks or software to help you figure that out, do it manually, go through all your invoices and everyone you’ve hired for different positions and count it up! And a follow up, do you pay that position more than you would pay a full time employee? If so it might be time.
5. Is the amount of work you are doing keeping you from growing? Like, do you have to do so much that you don’t have time to find new clients, work on reels, work on the vision of the company? This is really subjective and only you can answer that truthfully. I never have enough time even with employees… that’s a lie. I can make time, I don’t because I’m lazy, or sidetracked, or want to binge watch a show. There are a million things to distract me. Be honest with yourself, because if you hire someone thinking you’ll have more time, it’s not true. You’ll need to work even harder to make sure you are making enough money so your employee can feed their family.

You probably don’t need an office

Some of you with kids (which I don’t have) will probably argue this. That’s fine, do it your way.

If you’re just getting started, an unnecessary expense is an office. You can edit, store and create at home. You can rent a studio for video shoots (at the client’s expense) and you can meet your client at their place or at a coffee shop. Either way you don’t need an office location at first. You don’t need one until your yearly sales exceed the price of paying yourself and paying a team member, and you’ve already factored in workmans comp, insurance and payroll taxes. What I’m saying is that spending money on something you don’t “need” keeps you from growing in the right ways. Besides, you should be saving your money.

Clients are the most important

Sure the way you treat your staff is most important. But as important is how you treat your clients. In every way possible go out of your way to solve their problems and treat them well. If they need something small done, even if it’s not really a service you provide, go out of your way to do it for them for free. One of my most loyal and largest clients came from a DVD duplication job I did. I don’t do DVD duplication… But I did it as a favor to one of my other clients who hooked me up with this other person working at a local bank. That person left the bank and started working for one of the largest companies in the US. She connected me to the head of communications, and now we have a solid relationship with their marketing and other departments. Sure we got lucky. But that only happened because we live by this philosophy. Go above and beyond when we can. Sometimes that means creating some videos pro bono. Sometimes it means jumping through a seemingly endless amounts of hoops, but in the end the clients see it and they love you for it. Treat them well, they feed your family.

I’m sure there’s more… and I’ll add them here when I or the team think of them.
