Sourcing hardware & electronics have been a issue from the very beginning. At first i didn´t realise other people would be interested in building these projects so i just took stuff i had laying around at home. Then i sourced from stores that i only learned later didn´t ship worldwide. So it´s safe to say it´s been challenging. There have also been a few offering kit´s thru the years and i´ve had som links to sites like Banggood, hobbyking, amazon etc. I have kept all the links on this website in case it might be useful to know the source of the parts even though the actual links might be dead.

If you want to source parts for the OpenRC F1 specifically there´s a website named RCPrinter.com that offers several kits. You can get everything from fasteners and bearing to electronics. Right now it´s probably the easiest way to get what you need to build the OpnRC F1 car.

RCPrinter.com makes building a 3D Printed remote controlled vehicle more accessible to everyone with hardware and electronics kits to streamline your build and give you the best opportunity for a fun and successful project. We have kits for awesome builds like the OpenRC F1 car by Daniel Norée, 3DSets 4wd trucks, sporty buggies, snowmobiles, tractors and planes and more kits are being added regularly. 5% of all kit sales is donated back to the original designers of the projects to help support their work. Keep an eye on the RCPrinter Youtube channel where we regularly test new 3D printed RC projects.”

The 2019 F1 season is upon us with the first race in Melbourne on sunday! I meant to release the first updates for 2019 before the race so it´s about high time i guess.

STL´s can be downloaded here!

Of course there are tons of changes to the real cars but i usually focus on the most noteable parts and this year for me it´s the wings. The front wing having a more simple design aswell as being wider. The front wing is now also positioned a bit further out in front. I have also increased the angle for the delta shape according to the real cars. Many asked for the front wing to be printable laying down so that´s also possible now. I have tried to keep it simple as always but there´s still need for some support being added. The front wing can be further strengthend by adding thickness to the bottom of the wing.

The rear wing has not seen alot of visible changes. It´s slightly wider and have new flaps in center. It´s sometimes been tricky with areas touching support structures as they have been at a angle. This time i have tried to “shave off” material here and there to allow for a better contact surface for support material so hopefully printing it will be easier now.

Im having more design changes/additions in mind but they will have to be added later as there are lot´s of things going on right now. MRRF and the OpenRC F1 World Championships are just around the corner.

The STL´s are uploaded to MyMiniFactory but won´t be available until approved. They will not be available on any of the other 3D file repositories. However STL´s aswell as STEP files are available to Patreons if you can´t wait. Stay tuned and follow my MyMiniFactory page or joins my Patreons.

This is a sponsored article in cooperation with ElogioAM.

3D printing Facilan™ C8 was first announced in November 2017 as a collaboration between 3D4makers and Perstorp. Few months later the two companies announced a joint venture agreement to form a 3D printing material company named ElogioAM and expand their collaboration even further. Since, chemical company Ingevity from US has acquired Perstorp´s related business with ElogioAM and becomes the new shareholder beside 3D4maker..

So what exactly is Facilan C8?

ElogioAM set out to create a material which would outperform existing materials. A material that is not only environmental friendly and easy to print, but also more durable than ABS all while having a superior surface finish on the printed part. Especially the latter is one of the key features that is mentioned time and time again, and for good reason I might add. As stated on their website “In short, Facilan TM C8 is easy to print, high strength, soft touch 3D printing material with the smoothest surfaces of any FDM 3D printing material“. Those are pretty bald statements and do they hold up in a real world environment?

My first experience with Facilan C8

I was first introduced to FacilanTM C8 at the 2017 TCT show in Birmingham. ElogioAM said that they were about to release a new exciting material they had been working on for some time now. After been given a short presentation along with pictures and sample prints I was intrigued. So a couple of weeks later I was sent a couple of spools from a pre-production batch to test out.

Unfortunately this was all during a time where my family and I were moved to a new place, so while all but one printers where stowed away testing was limited to a few test prints. On top of that, the pre-production batch had some variations in diameter that were way out of tolerance which also limited the tests to less than what I wanted. So while I was quite impressed with the result from the testprints, I packed the last remaining printer and put it in storage in wait for our big move.

Back on track again

As summer of 2018 approached I had all printers set up at the new place and I was ready to go again. As I had been focusing on work and our move during the first months of 2018 Facilan™ C8 had gone into production. The filament diameter issue was now nothing but a memory and I reached out to ElogioAM to see if they were interested in sponsoring the next OpenRC project, which to my delight they were. And so they sent me C8, ALOT of C8 actually. So not only did I have filament enough to print the new project over and over but also do additional test prints.

Ease of use

Seeing that PLA is somewhat of an industry standard these days as far as widely easy to print materials goes, I think it doing a comparison with PLA would make sense. PLA is widely available and prints at a wide variety of settings and comes without any of the hardships many other materials have makes it suitable to begin with if your just starting out in the world of 3D printing. However, some applications might need a more impact resistant product or a smoother surface on the finished part. This is where Facilan™ C8 comes in. It was designed to be stronger but just as easy to print as PLA while still offering a impact & tensile strength higher than ABS. On top of that you´ll get a silky smooth surface finish.

As far as print settings goes the extrusion temperature range according to the product page should be somewhere between 193-220°C. My sweet spot is at 200°C. I mostly used the recommended 35°C for the bed which worked fine. I have also printed it in my ZYYX printers which don´t have a heated bed and it worked fine too. Print speed is recommended to 30-50mm/s but I have printed at 40-60mm/s. Part cooling is something I have only used for some parts. It definitely helps for printing steeper angles but I feel it affects layer adhesion somewhat so for some parts I have kept the fan of for maximum inter layer adhesion. For the majority of prints I haven´t noticed much shrinking but when the density is more than I usually use (like 3-4 perimeter & >50% infill) I have noticed some lifting from the print bed and shrinking along X/Y.

We all have different preferences but for me Facilan™ C8 have been and still is a easy material to print much like my experience with PLA.

Mechanical durability & strength

Usually PET comes to mind when you are looking for a more durable alternative in terms of mechanical properties to PLA. This is where Facilan™ C8 can be another option but within my opinion a much nicer surface finish. Facilan™ C8 have similar characteristics to PET in terms of durability. Much like ABS a part will “give in” when bent unlike PLA that will in most cases snap when exposed to enough force.

I have also used Facilan™ C8 to do “living hinges” and it works quite well for test design concepts. As mentioned above I feel that turning of part cooling will increase layer bonding and overall durability. The website states that both impact strength as well as tensile strength is higher than ABS would make it a good candidate for many of the projects I’m doing including the OpenRC F1. And speaking of the F1, I have printed one in Facilan™ C8 and will be doing some tough crashing when the winter is over so stay tuned!

Surface finish

This might be what I like the most about Facilan™ C8. It was developed to almost completely conceal layer lines and I think it does a fine job producing fine prints with a silky smooth finish. And yes, I realize I might sound like a broken record coming back to the “silky smooth” but to be fair it does describe to tactile properties of the surface of prints done with Facilan™ C8.

Especially the matte finish is a sought after feature that many ask for and it´s definitely something that makes this material stand out.

For those that still want to further process the print by gently sanding it, is surprisingly easy. I´d say it´s easier than PLA or ABS. I missed a measurement on the “Bullet Time” grip and it came out slightly small on the inside diameter so I tried sanding it and it was easier than expected. I don´t sually sand printed parts but good to know, right?

If there´s something I’m missing, it would be more colors. I think that having a wide variety of colors vailable would make C8 even more attractive. However, I spoke to ElogioAM about this and they ointed out the Facilan™ C8 can easily be spray painted, even without a primer so I might give that a go actually.

Another pleasant surprise is removal of support material which I feel is easier than most other aterials I used. Even though I always try to design parts without having to use support this is a ndeed something to remember when using Facilan™ C8.

Conclusion

So is Facilan™ C8 the ultimate 3D printing material? Well, we all have different preferences as to what suits our own needs best so it´s up to you to decide but maybe this article will at least answer some of the questions you might have regarding the Facilan™ C8 material.

To to sum things up, if you’re looking for a material that have ABS-like properties and a super smooth surface finish you should definitely look into Facilan™ C8. The price is slightly higher than your average PLA/PET/ABS so that is also something to consider when looking for a new material. I´m using Facilan™ C8 for both testing new designs and some end user products as well and it´s worked out well so far. Facilan™ C8 is a material that does a lot and is suitable for a wide spectrum of applications.

Anyhow back in 2013 the landscape for RepRap style 3D printers were alot different from what it is today. Josef Průša had been a RepRap core developer for quite some time and was already doing his thing. As a RepRap and open source evangelist he did talks, some of you can find on YouTube. One of those talks that i watched a couple of times back then is this one where he´s is not on a elevated stage but on the bottom of a dried out swimming pool. A different but rather cool approach. Check out the video below for some RepRap history!

MyMiniFactoryIt´s getting increasingly difficult to stay on top of what´s going on through out the social media platforms and websites such as 3D file repositiories. There´s a steady flow of comments, PM´s, emails etc. In a attempt to increase my chances on stying on top of things i have decided to decrease the number of websites i´ll be posting my designs to. So starting now and for atleast the coming 6 months all designs will be posted to MyMiniFactory. There will be no uploads from me to Thingiverse and the other sites.

Patreon

Some designs that are “in development” will be posted on my Patreon page and available to patrons. Once designs are finished they will be posted to MyMiniFactory with a slight delay. So if you want to be in on the testing and getting files early Patreon is the way to go.

Paid models

Another reason i will be using the MyMiniFactory platform is that it will enable me to charge for some models. I haven´t really figured out to what extent designs will be charged for but i´ll figure that out as i go. Some designs will also be availabe to Patrons. The reason for this is simply to enable me to put the time needed into this project. I need more time to deal with all the stuff surrounding these projects, answering questions etc and i´ve found it to be incedibly hard to get any financial support for doing open source projects style projects. And at this stage i simply can´t put as much of my free time into it as i used to.

Follow me on MyMiniFactory

So if you want to stay tuned to whats going on either head over to MyMiniFactory and give me a follow there or you can support me on Patreon if you like it´s up to you.

The Midwest RepRap Festival, probably my favourite 3D printing event ever is once again opening it´s doors next year in March. This amazing venue is a great place (if not THE place) to meet other 3D printing enhusiats aswell as representatives from the business. The companies you will find there are usually part of the open source movement or supporting the community in other ways. If you are able to go i think you should, it´s definitely worth it.

OpenRC F1 World Championships

This year was amazing and also extra special since the first ever OpenRC F1 Worlds was held much thanks to Matterhackers. Another highlight that was special was Joel bringing his crazy 4x OpenRC F1 so we could assemble it together at MRRF. All in all this was truly a amazing experience and i´m so happy i got to be a part of that historical event. There are always a ton of amazing people there to talk to and share experiences with. And if you want to bring your own project you should, you will find lot´s of others doing just that and what´s better than sharing what you´ve learned with others or even get some valuable input from others on a problem your trying to solve.

Things change

Me, Jerry & Nick
Me, Jerry & Nick

I´ve been at MRRF for the last two years and also planned on going next year as it´s always something to look forward to. But since i quit my job a few months ago i find myself in a different situation economically and simply can´t afford to go. I had a somewhat far fetched plan to get a sponsor but unfortunately in the end that didn´t work out. If this would have been another year i would probably have been super bummed out about this but i´m not , i mean it sucks and i really want to go but instead of being dissapointed i´d like to think of all the good times i´ve had the past two years. I´ve had a chance to meet so many awesome people and that´s probably the best part of it all i think.

Have a blast! =)

I´ll be back another time for sure and to all of you that are going, have a great time, enjoy every minute of it and make sure this one is the best MRRF ever! Much love and a merry christmas to all!

3D printed GoPro Karma Mounting RingSo for this winter i want to do alot more filming than past winters. By filming i mean primarily snowboarding and skiing. I´ll be using the OpenRC Mini Quad to do follow cam etc but i also want to use the GoPro Karma grip together with a extension arm. To do that i need a ring that goes on the Karma grip and can be secured to the extension arm. A mounting ring like that is available in stores but what´s the fun in that? I decided to draw one up in Fusion 360 and 3D print one instead.

3D printed in Facilan C8

This one is printed in Facilan C8 filament by ElogioAM. Supersimple design and print, no supprt needed. I printed this one in the ZYYXpro at 210°C without any cooling fan and no heated bed. As Facilan C8 have fairly good impact resistance som minor flex is introduced. I´ll see how this works out, one also have to take the low temperatures into account. Secured in both ends i don´t think that will be a problem but we´ll see!

Daniel Norée & OpenRC TruggyIt was announced earlier this year that Google is finally shutting down it´s Google+ service. And while this is probably not a susprise to most people i´d like to take a moment to look back at my time with Google+ as it was where i decided to launch a OpenRC Project community group which is to date closing in on 10k members.

3D printing & Google+

When i got into open source 3D printing back in 2011 the 3D printing group on Google+ was THE place for discussions and inspiration. Most of my 3D printing heroes was hanging out in the G+ 3D printing group and were all accessible aswell as engaging in discussions regularly. Ideas were buzzing and new projects where launched all the time. I liked the idea of Google+ and had actually deleted my Facebook account to go all in on Google+ with a plan to convince all my friends to come along with me. Of course that never happend and i returned to Facebook a few years after. For a while though all the cool kids were hanging out at Google+ but after some time slowly started to move to other platforms, Facebook being one of them.

OpenRC on Google+

Featured on 3dprintingindustryIn 2012 i designed a 3D printable RC Truggy which was released early 2013. While it got lot´s of attention i soon realised i needed a place to gather the growing little community around this project and of course, Google+ was the place to do it. Just like that The OpenRC Project was born.
In the beginning i created a few G+ accounts, asked questions which i then answered myself. After a while others started to ask questions and posting pictures, ideas, mods, answering other users questions etc. After the first few hundred members both the OpenRC project itself aswell as the community really took off! Anyone that have launched a community without having any kind of following on social media knows it can be quite the challenge but i enjoyed every minute of it that´s for sure!

I really would like to extend a huge thank you to all the members engaging in the OpenRC Project on Google+ making it what it is today but especially the ones helping out in the beginning, without them i don´t think that it would have been what it is today. The Google+ group have really been the corner stone of the entire community for so long and is now closing on 10k members which is amazing.
There was a period where i deleted some 1000 fake members but other than that the OpenRC community mostly stayed clear of all the spam that infected other groups on the platform. And while it´s slowly seeing less and less activity it is still very much alive and i highly suggest you browse thru it before it´s gone forever as there alot of great stuff in there for anyone interested in 3D printing and RC.

Eventually i returned to Facebook

Most people probably see Google+ as a big failure on Google´s part and yes, for the most part i have to agree. But at the time i truly belived in the platform and today i still think it could have been great with a different approach from Google. But anyhow, the OpenRC community worked really well for many, many years. After a while it became quite obvious the the majority of my friends wasn´t gonna join me on G+ and i returned to Facebook. I still pop in on G+ from time to time to check on the group though. Now the OpenRC Facebook group have taken over the role as the main place to discuss and collect information alongside this website.

Goodbye Google+

So thank you Google+ for all the memories, it was nice knowing you and i hope you get to rest in peace.

If you are unfamiliar with the OpenRC project i suggest you check out this article over at Hackaday.com about the OpenRC Project.

I love snow, i really do. And it´s one of the reasons we decided to move from Stockholm further north, closer to winter. Looking at the options we quickly fell in love with the small town Järvsö som 350km north of Stockholm and we have been calling this place our home now for the past 6 months.

Friends

Järvsö MediaFarmWe have had a amazing time since the move, we have had lot´s of old friends come up and hang out and we have also met so many new and awesome people that we now call friends. It´s amazing how welcome you are here as a newcomer.

Järvsö MediaFarm

Being into YouTube i searched for people in and around Järvsö that would be making YouTube content and it turned out it wasn´t easy. I found one dude though that make amazing videos, Andreas Fransson who´s not only a top notch videographer but also a professional photographer. I contacted him upon moving and we quickly became friends. Together we strated a project called “Järvsö MediaFarm” that is a project to create media focusin on our own YouTube channels but also find others who make videos about things happening in Järvsö such as Downhill biking or Skiing & snowboarding.

New YouTube Project

Järvsöbacken YouTubeI have also been given the opportunity to start up and maintain the local ski resorts brand new YouTube channel. It´s incredibly exciting, kinda starting from scratch with a new channel but still building on the solid brand that JärvsöBacken is. I will be reporting on what´s going on around the mountain adding my own style and some funs stuff along the way. So if you want to see what i´m up to during winter make sure to check it out. It´s in Swedish though so even though everyone is welcome it´s primary audience is snowloving Scandinavians. Check it out here.

Separating My Social Media

While i started most of my own social media channels focusing on the english language i have come to realise i want to make more content in swedish and not necessarily always about 3D printing. Most of my followers are those interested in 3D printing, so for those of you that want to follow my everyday life and in Swedish i have created a new Instagram account for that. That means my other Instragram will mainly focus on 3D printing again and also  english only. This summer i also started makin more Swedish YouTube videos on my second YouTube channel for those that want to follow up on that!
