The Biology Department at Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) has once again demonstrated its commitment to international community service through innovations in livestock farming. The research team has successfully developed probiotics and single-cell protein (SCP) specifically designed to enhance the health and productivity of livestock.
The probiotics are formulated to improve the microbial balance in the digestive tracts of livestock, thereby boosting immune resilience and digestive efficiency. Meanwhile, single-cell protein, derived from selected microorganisms, provides an eco-friendly alternative protein source that serves as a valuable dietary supplement for livestock.
Drs. Agus Supriyanto, M.Kes., a key speaker at the event, highlighted that the project stemmed from concerns about livestock farmers’ dependence on antibiotics and dwindling conventional protein sources. “We aim to offer a sustainable and safe solution to support food security,” he stated. The community service event took place on August 10, 2024, at ERWE Farm in Tlekung, Junrejo District, bringing together livestock farmers from across Batu City. Twelve students from diverse countries, including Japan, Yemen, Pakistan, Mali, and Cameroon, participated in the initiative. This effort reflects UNAIR’s commitment to making a meaningful global impact through research and innovation. By harnessing biotechnology, the Biology UNAIR team hopes to assist farmers in increasing production in a more efficient and sustainable manner. This initiative exemplifies the essential role that higher education institutions play in supporting global societal development and fostering sustainable progress.

]]>
After the COVID-19 pandemic that has hit many business sectors, the orchid cultivation business has survived and shows bright prospects. World market demand for Indonesian orchids continues to increase due to their beauty and variety. However, the technique of cultivating orchids using seeds is difficult because orchids do not have endosperm, making it difficult to germinate. Some orchids have been successfully germinated by farmers but there are some exotic orchids that are still constrained.

In response to these problems, lecturers from the Department of Biology, Faculty of Science and Technology, Universitas Airlangga held a community service activity aimed at the Sanderiana Farmer Group. With the theme “Empowerment of Orchid Farmers Community Group Sanderiana Farmers Group Dadaprejo Village, Junrejo District, Batu City, East Java through Tissue Culture Training for Cultivating Orchids that are Threatened with Extinction,” which was carried out in July-October 2024 at “DD Orchid Nursery” in Batu City.
This activity began with the screening of problems faced by orchid farmers, the implementation of training and evaluation of training results. The training began on August 11, 2024, including lectures and practical materials, followed by an evaluation of the planting results on September 11, 2024 and finally on October 11, 2024.
The team for this activity was Dwi Kusuma Wahyuni, Ph.D., Prof. Hery Purnobasuki, Ph.D., Prof. Dr. Edy Setiti Wida Utami, M.S., Dr. Junairiah, S.Si., M.Kes., and Dr. Hamidah, M.Kes. In addition to the lecturer team, this implementation was also assisted by students. This activity was also attended by international students participating in the AEGIS program (summer program of Faculty of Science and Technology Unair). Dwi Kusuma Wahyuni, as the head of this activity said: “Through this training activity, we want to help orchid farmers “Sanderiana Farmer Group” to be able to produce orchid seeds using tissue culture techniques independently so as to ensure the availability of quality, efficient, and sustainable orchid seeds. Furthermore, this activity is also an effort to introduce the richness of Indonesian orchids to international students.” This activity is also supported by Taman Husada Graha Famili to promote medicinal orchids.
In this community service, participants were invited to get to know Indonesian endemic orchids and how to cultivate them. Furthermore, participants also directly practiced tissue culture techniques to produce quality orchid seedlings. First of all, Prof. Edy Setiti Wida Utami, as the presenter, explained the basic knowledge about orchids and introduced various tissue culture techniques used to propagate orchid seedlings.

Furthermore, a demonstration of orchid tissue culture cultivation methods was held, and followed by each participant practicing directly the techniques taught with the assistance of lecturers and students. On this occasion, participants were assisted in performing orchid propagation techniques using bud eyes as culture material. “It’s visible, yes. It will be extracted using a sterile knife,” said Dwi Kusuma Wahyuni while demonstrating the process of taking a bud eye on an orchid plant. She continued, each cell in the bud eye, when successfully planted on the media will develop into a whole plant. Not only followed by the orchid farming community, this community service was also attended by internship students who served in the “DD Orchid Nursery” from various universities. All participants were very enthusiastic in participating in the entire series of activities and were grateful for the implementation of this community service. “So far, what we know is planting, caring, fertilizing, and so on. It turns out that I just know some breeding, especially orchid plants through tissue culture from what has been presented earlier,” said one of the participants in the testimonial session.

As time goes by, science and technology are growing, and so is biology. Related to the development of this science, the Department of Biology, Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) held a Community Service activity with the topic of Molecular Biology Training on Saturday, September 21, 2024.
This Molecular Biology Training activity was attended by 21 participants out of 24 participants. Participants who attended were members of the Kediri Regency High School Biology Subject Teacher Conference (MGMP) coordinated by the Head of MGMP Mr. Tri Agus Sujiono, S.Pd. MGMP itself is a forum for teachers of the same subject at the high school level to exchange experiences, knowledge, and teaching methods.
Dr. Sugiharto, M.Si. as the Chief Executive along with Firli Rahmah Primula Dewi, M.Si, Ph.D. acted as Presenters and assisted by Event Hosts and other committees involving S1 and S2 Biology Study Program students on duty, successfully running molecular biology training activities entitled “Molecular Genetics Technique Training: DNA Isolation, Quantification and Electrophoresis for Teachers MGMP Biology Kediri”.
On this occasion, the high school teachers were directly taught molecular analysis techniques, namely conducting their own DNA extraction, quantification and electrophoresis. All training activities were carried out in the Molecular Genetics Laboratory of FST UNAIR. First of all, the speaker gave examples of using molecular tools properly and the basics of theory related to DNA extraction, quantification and electrophoresis. Then the participants were given the opportunity to try directly the process of DNA extraction, quantification and electrophoresis. All participants of this training activity looked very enthusiastic and excited in following the whole process. The enthusiasm can be seen from the enthusiasm of the teachers in experimenting with the activities, operating the tools and the questions asked. Tri Agus Sujiono, S.Pd. from SMA Negeri 1 Plosoklaten as well as the head of MGMP, gave a very extraordinary impression of the implementation of training activities organized by the Department of Biology FST UNAIR. He explained that with this activity, he became more knowledgeable about things he previously did not know. “The impression is extraordinary, previously I did not know about what would be implemented. However, it turns out that after I was given the relevant theoretical basis by the lecturers as experts here, so that I who previously did not know became more aware of the description of this activity. The knowledge gained is very useful. God willing, we will share it with other MGMP friends,” he explained.

Not only Mr. Tri Agus Sujiono, S.Pd., Mrs. Umu Fatonatul Hidayah, M.Pd. from SMA Negeri 1 Puncu also gave a positive response regarding the implementation of this training. She said that technology is always evolving, not to mention the knowledge that has been obtained when she was in college, so that this activity can ‘recharge‘ teachers so that they can keep up with the development of science, creative, and innovative. “I am very happy with this activity. When we were students, there were theories and practicums that were somewhat forgotten, then technology is always updating, which is likely that teachers must keep up with developments so that teachers remain creative and innovative. Frankly, this is a new molecular biology experience,” she said. Umu Fatonatul Hidayah, M.Pd. also hopes that this activity will have sustainability, not only in the field of molecular biology, but also in other fields of biology. “This activity is very useful for fellow teachers. Our hope is that this activity does not stop here, so there is a continuation. Maybe in the form of other community services and not only for molecular biology, but also for plant morphology, genetics, and most often for students is plant diversity,” he said.

]]>In research related to the inventory of macrofungi diversity in the area along the road from Triangulation to Pancur Post, 54 genus of macrofungi were found from a total of 10 stations. Based on information quoted from the publishing page of a previous research article related to the Biodiversity of Edible Macrofungi from Alas Purwo National Park by students of the Microbiology Study Club Study Group in 2015 along the Triangulation-Sadengan road, 40 types of macrofungi genus were found and 22 of them had edible status. Based on this, in a period of 9 years, there has been an increase in the number of macrofungi diversity in its habitat. These changes are evidence of the richness of macrofungi that are still diverse in the forest along the road from Triangulation to Pancur in Alas Purwo National Park.
This macrofungi research was carried out by walking along the Triangulation-Pancur access road where each fungal species found would be documented using a camera, identified its characteristics from the hood, blade, stem, and attachment site, and measured its physical and chemical parameters to determine the ideal environmental conditions for macrofungi growth in the forest along the Triangulation-Pancur road in Alas Purwo National Park. Because in the morning before the implementation of sampling activities there was a long rain, the data obtained on soil moisture where the mushrooms were quite high. In addition to being found in the soil, macrofungi found along the Triangulation-Pancur road were also found growing on the wood of a fallen tree trunk. The size also varies, from small to the size of a human arm. In addition to varying in size, the mushrooms found also have a variety of colors, ranging from white, yellow, brown, green, to red.
An inventory of fungi in Alas Purwo National Park revealed a remarkable diversity of fungal species, with the discovery of various genera such as Trametes and Ganoderma, which inhabit mixed forest vegetation. This research not only illustrates the natural wealth hidden within, but also provides important insights for the protection of ecosystems in the Alas Purwo National Park area so that its diversity is maintained. This research is also intended to find out more about the status of mushrooms in Alas Purwo National Park that are edible. With a deeper understanding of the types of fungi present, conservation measures can be further strengthened to maintain environmental sustainability for future generations.

Sauria, is a nickname that characterizes those of us who are fascinated by the beauty of reptiles. Of course, as lovers of herpetology we carry out activities in Alas Purwo very pleasant. Moreover, in Alas Purwo National Park there is a lot of beauty and there are also species that are still in the IUCN Category. For us while in Alas Purwo National Park, we felt like we were in a hidden paradise for adventure. This arid tropical forest holds an incredible wealth of herpetofauna, from agile tree lizards to venomous snakes ready to strike.

With simple equipment, we wandered through mazes of bushes, traced streams, and even dived into swamps to find our intended species (monitor lizards, snakes, and lizards). Despite the dangers we faced, such as venomous snakes, the saurians’ enthusiasm never waned. We were mesmerized by the beauty and uniqueness of the creatures we encountered. Whenever we came across a lively tree lizard or a snake with a unique pattern, we burst into cheers. For us, finding the animal we were looking for was very exciting. Here we are not just hunting, but we are also managing data and looking for information that will certainly be useful for other researchers who will set foot in Alas Purwo National Park.
For us, witnessing Sauria’s enthusiasm was an experience that will live long in the memory. Sauria found not only intellectual fulfillment, but also inner peace in being at one with nature. The adventure in Alas Purwo National Park is an unforgettable memory.

In the Field Research Training and Development (P3L) which was held on July 10-14, 2024, the Insect Study Group (KS) sent a Research Group (KP) which was named KP Heterocera. KS Insecta is a forum for a group of students who have more interest in the world of insects. Therefore, Research this time KP Heterocera focuses on the study of butterfly diversity (sub order Rhopalocera).
Research conducted by KP Heterocera in Alas Purwo National Park is regarding the study of butterfly diversity, precisely along the Triangulation-Pancur path and Pancur-Plengkung path. This study aims to determine the diversity and dominance of butterflies along the Triangulation-Pancur and Pancur-Plengkung paths. The research was conducted by capturing butterflies along the path using Insect Net or insect net. After that, the captured butterflies were documented and released back into nature. The identification process was carried out on the butterflies that we managed to capture up to the species level.

During P3L activities in Alas Purwo National Park, especially in the Heterocera Study Group, we gained many valuable experiences. P3L not only helped broaden our horizons about butterflies, but also trained our skills in conducting research directly in the field. One of the most memorable experiences was when participating in butterfly sampling activities in their natural habitat. We learned how to make a belt transect, count the butterflies caught, and identify species based on their morphological characteristics.
Another interesting experience was when we had a discussion related to the observation results. This activity trained our critical and analytical thinking skills. in this discussion we shared information, analyzed data, and tried to find certain patterns on the wings to identify the butterflies caught.
We hope that with the Field Research Training and Development Program (P3L) carried out by the Biology Student Association (Himbio), Biology Students of Universitas Airlangga can improve research skills in the field, especially those related to the Rhopalocera suborder. Such as being able to master butterfly sampling techniques with active methods according to scientific procedures, being able to identify butterfly species through body shape, pattern, and color, being able to manage data, being able to compile reports, and being able to present data properly and correctly. Publication is the final part of P3L activities that will be carried out in the future. Thus, it is hoped that the publication of the P3L report can be a medium for disseminating knowledge about butterflies and further research materials.
