]]>We missed out on the Smithsonian magazine’s Free “Museum Day” last year (2017). We do usually like to use the “free” day to visit some local sites that we would not normally visit, or have never visited or even heard of before. Sometimes they are already free but even then they are often ready for new visitors on this particular day.
This year we thought we would miss it again. Well, we were to be out of town at that time visiting friends and family. But wait, what better way to see something different in a different part of the country. This year we were in the Phoenix area during Museum Day and decided to go to the Desert Botanical Garden. Here are some pictures from our visit.
Yes, the weather was clear and beautiful and hot, very HOT. We did take our time and wore ourselves out in the early afternoon. we outlasted our local guides, in the heat, but what better time to visit a desert? This place is recommended!

Last year we took advantage of Smithsonian magazine’s “Museum Day” to visit the Mayslake Peabody Estate for free. There are many participating locations but only a few of the very well known “Museums” participate.
Maricel and I like to take the opportunity to visit a lesser known location that we might not otherwise attend and Mayslake seemed like a good option. We had seen across the lake and wondered what could be over there.
We were pleasantly surprised. Here are a few of the pictures we took while there.

Wouldn you like to go to a museum for free? There are some museums that don’t participate but with over 1000 participating locations I am sure you can find one near you.

We didn’t make it last year but for Museum Day 2013, Maricel and I went to the Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art in Elmhurst and I am happy to share a few photos. We have driven past this museum and had heard good things about it but we had not yet taken a chance to visit.

You want to go to this one on a nice weather day as much of it is outside and there is some good hiking around the property.
