Welcome to How to Create Your Podcast Intro with Garageband. This is a two-part tutorial. Part 1 focuses on recording your voice. Part 2 teaches you how to mix your voice with music for a professional sounding intro.

You Will Learn

  • How to record your voice in Garageband
  • Which effects settings to use on your voice over track
  • How to adjust the effects settings
  • How to create an MP3 of the recording

What You Will Need

  • Mac computer
  • Garageband
  • External Microphone
  • Headphones to monitor your recording

For this project I’m using Garageband v. 10.1.2 and the Audio-Technica ATR2100 USB mic plugged directly into the USB port on my Mac. At a minimum, I recommend using a Logitech headset mic.

What Not to Do

  • Do not use the Built-in microphone on your computer.
  • Earbuds are fine to monitor your recording, but do not use earbuds that have a built-in mic for monitoring. Garageband may try to use it as the default microphone.

Don't be intimidated by some of the overproduced podcast intros you hear. You have the power to create a professional sounding podcast intro on a limited budget when you do it yourself.

The purpose of the intro is to inform your audience about what your show or episode is about. It doesn't have to be fancy! Keep is short, informative, and to the point. The good news is that you can always change it down the road. I've changed my own podcast intro a few times!

Check out Part 2 of this tutorial to learn how to mix your voice with music.

Amy Woodall joins me for this collaborative podcast series on Achieving Enlightenment in the Modern World.

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines Enlightened as:

  1. freed from ignorance and misinformation
  2. based on full comprehension of the problems involved

Enlightened Leadership

Many of our challenges as leaders, and as everyday people just trying to navigate this world, spring from ignorance, misinformation, and stories we make up in our heads. Those stories, combined with judgment and our emotional attachments often prevent our full comprehension of the problems we encounter. How can we most effectively and efficiently solve a problem when we don't fully comprehend it?

The purpose of this series is to explore how meditation, mindfulness, and intentionality impact our leadership, communication, and influence. Amy shares a practice or two in each episode that can be used to bring mindfulness and intention to help us become more enlightened leaders.

Focus on the practices, not the achievement.

Why You Need to add ID3 Tags to Your Podcast

Adding ID3 tags to your mp3 file for your podcast is important because the tags help identify your mp3 file. Including the tags with your name, episode name, show name ensures that the info shows up properly when the file is played.

How to Add ID3 Tags to Your Podcast

In this video, I show you how to use GarageBand and iTunes to add the ID3 tags. This is not the only way to do it. I'm a big fan of using ID3 Editor. It's a relatively inexpensive investment and makes the process faster for me. Use what best fits your budget and your workflow.

Alex Rufatto-Perry, Founder of Practically Speaking, joins me for a podcast series dedicated to helping you deliver your dynamic message. We knew that there was overlap in the work that we do with our clients, so we sat down together and let the tape roll to capture what happens when the public speaking and podcasting worlds collide.

Over the course of our conversation, we determined that Alex is the clarity and I'm the conduit. It's fascinating to watch her drill down to the core of a message and then refine and package it. My role is in helping get that message out into the world with podcasting.

We recorded this series in one day. Truth be told, it took us a little while to really feel like we hit our groove. I've never collaborated on an entire podcast series with a co-host. I was nervous.

The gift of this project, and working with Alex, was watching each episode evolve as we talked through it and worked to refine our message. You will hear some of that process in these episodes. They aren't all perfectly polished.  You might also hear some outtakes packed with giggles and silliness when you play the episodes out to the very end.

You can listen to the entire series right here, or you can subscribe to The Brassy Broadcast on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, or your favorite podcasting app.

We would love to hear from you over on LinkedIn. Connect with us there. Share your favorite episode and let us know what you learned, or share a story about when you've experienced bad behaviors, technology fails, or the dreaded Say'n'Spray. We love stories!

Podcast SEO is Critical for Audience Growth and Discoverability

Podcast SEO is critical to audience growth and discoverability. Podcasters need a basic understanding of SEO, or search engine optimization, so our podcasts can be discovered by new listeners. As Google is now serving up podcasts in search results, optimizing your podcast titles, descriptions, and show notes, is more critical than ever if you want to be discovered by new audiences.

How can podcasters capitalize on SEO to help new listeners find their podcasts?

Spoiler Alert: There is no magic bullet for SEO

Jennifer Denney, Digital Strategist and Owner of Elevated Marketing Solutions, breaks down what we need to understand about SEO for podcasters.

SEO is a long term strategy, made up of incremental tweaks combined to impact your site’s user experience and performance in organic search results.

What is the Ideal Length for Podcast Show Notes or Blog Posts?

Jennifer does a little myth busting here because I was under the impression that there was an ideal length for show notes. Turns out, this is not the case. People are going to Google to get questions answered. Which means Google is looking for you to completely cover the subject from beginning to end and do it better than anyone else.

How does Google determine who has the best answer? It’s all of those hundreds of little tweaks.

Formulating the Right Questions to Boost Your Podcast SEO

Think about how your listeners are phrasing questions when they are going to Google to look for answers. What words are they using? What questions are they asking? Get out of your own language box and how you say things. Ask your audience how they would search for an answer.

Recommended Tools for Keyword Research

Capitalizing on Titles, Show Notes, and Blog Posts for Podcast SEO

Episode titles, show notes and blog posts are the ideal to place to focuse your podcast SEO. This is why you want to be intentional with sturcture and keyword usage. Think about having your episode transcribed. (You can download this episode transcription here). This makes it easy to create detailed show notes and it gives your audience the ability to consume your content in their preferred format.

Pro Tip: Episode 1 is not a good podcast title

Jennifer has created a search optimization checklist to help optimize blog posts.

Don’t just describe what is in the episode in hopes that you will create enough interest to get someone to press play.  If your intention is to share information with your audience, give them the option of how they want to consume it. Listening to a podcast is not an option for everyone.

You can build your authority by using the episode description, blog post, or show notes to give detailed information that actually answers questions.

Additional SEO Optimization Recommendations

  • Flow the Keywords into the content
  • Write a title that is for the user
  • Use a Title Tag
  • Use sub headings
  • Add internal and external links

Put Your Podcast on YouTube...

if your goal is discoveraility and new subscribers. YouTube is the second largest search engine after Google. People with questions are going to YouTube for answers.

Jennifer Denney, Founder of Elevated Marketing Solutions, joins me in this episode to talk about why it makes sense to put your podcast on YouTube.

Not everyone knows how to listen to a podcast yet, but most everyone knows how to go to YouTube to find a video that answers a question. Google owns YouTube, so you can apply the some of the same principles of Google SEO to YouTube SEO. Listen to the previous episode in this series for SEO optimization tips.

Do People Listen to Audio on YouTube?

Yes, some people listen to audio on YouTube. For me, the goal of putting my podcast on YouTube isn't so that people will listen to it there. My goal is that it is more discoverable and that they will find it and then subscribe in their favorite podcasting app.

The Flipside: If your goal is to grow your YouTube channel, only sharing audio with still images is not a good strategy.

I co-host a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu podcast called Beauty and the Gi. Because I know that our target audience is spending hours on YouTube searching and watching videos about BJJ, it would be ridiculous for us not to have the podcast on that platform.

I've got a call to action of "Subscribe to the Podcast" at the very top of our description, along with links to the podcast in Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Google Podcasts. I've created a playlist specifically for the podcast and I've included Audio Only in the playlist title so no one is surprised when when they click on the link.

YouTube Video Optimization Tips for Podcasters

  • Use descriptive titles
  • Create Playlists
  • Add End Cards - tell the audience what you want them to do next
  • Utilize the description space. Fully cover what you are talking about in the video
  • Put the YouTube video on your website (like I did in this blog post)
