On Saturday, September 20, a massive mobilization will light up communities across the country — people across Canada are gathering to demand that the Canadian government choose peace, migrant justice, economic justice, Indigenous rights and climate justice. In Edmonton, Calgary and Red Deer, Albertans will Legislation emerging from the Government's Coal Industry Modernization Initiative (CIMI) is expected to be tabled soon after the Legislative Assembly of Alberta resumes on October 27. Environmental, Indigenous and landowner groups have raised concerns with CIMI, citing the “GoA’s history of allowing damaging mining practices to take place”. Led by Minister Brian Jean, CIMI has taken the points raised by a diverse group of Albertans in 2021, and created a policy that provides false comfort to our concerns. It leaves ample room for foreign companies to mine 190,000 hectares of environmentally-sensitive land.

The Calgary Environmental Round Table (CERT), a non-partisan coalition of leading local and provincial environmental organizations, is excited to launch our 2025 Municipal Election – Building a Greener Future for Calgary campaign. Our goal is to help voters make informed decisions on election day and to strengthen dialogue between candidates and the communities they hope to serve.

Why This Matters

Municipal decisions shape the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the communities we live in. As Calgary grows, we face urgent challenges from a rapidly changing environment. Clean water, biodiversity, and bold climate action are top of mind for voters this election season – and must be top of mind for our future city leadership.

About the Campaign

The CERT campaign provides opportunities for Calgary Mayoral and Ward Councillor candidates to share their vision for Calgary and their priorities on:

Through initiatives like our Candidate Questionnaire and Podcast Series, candidates will have the chance to share their knowledge, experience, and solutions with a city-wide audience. Their responses will:

Submission to the Alberta Coal Policy Committee - Alberta Medical Association

The Alberta Medical Association (AMA) is concerned about potential adverse physical and mental health issues that may occur if proposed open pit coal mines in Alberta are developed. As such, the AMA is opposed to the development of open pit coal mining without due and detailed consideration of such adverse health effects, planning for an increased need for physical and mental health resources and a detailed health assessment analysis.
Recommendations:
"We urge a full, detailed, independent review of the potential for increased open pit coal mining to cause adverse health consequences with a public release prior to any further approval of open pit coal mining. The review should include sensitivity analyses for mining disasters and worst-case scenarios which occur in mining with some frequency including mine bankruptcies with failure to clean up mining sites. Sensitivity analyses should include potential adverse health scenarios observed in other mining communities (e.g., Southeastern United States) where mining causality to the adverse health issues have not yet been ruled out (the benefit of doubt should be in favor of the communities’ health) as well as for adverse health effects where causality is firmly established (e.g. selenium toxicity). The analyses should assess the need for enhanced health care resources in the region of the mining and also include adverse health consequences in other jurisdictions adversely affected by the mining (e.g., the proposed mining sites could affect the water supply for major populations in western Canada)."

A Policy written by Albertans, for Albertans, reflecting extensive public input to the Coal Policy Committee.

"As a collection of individuals and organizations representing a wide range of Albertans, we are pleased to present A Coal Policy for Alberta – 2022 and Beyond. This Policy is supported by grassroots Indigenous groups, municipalities, hunters, anglers, ranchers, rural landowners, artists.
Since revocation of the 1976 A Coal Development Policy for Alberta (1976 Coal Policy) in 2020, Albertans have banded together to protect our water, fish, wildlife, sustainable livelihoods, and way of life from new coal developments. This Policy was written by Albertans, for Albertans, reflecting extensive public input to the Coal Policy Committee and the Committee’s two reports.
While this Policy reflects some of the recommendations in the Committee’s Final Report, Recommendations for the Management of Coal Resources in Alberta, it draws more heavily on the Committee’s report entitled, Engaging Albertans About Coal Report which reflects the input received from Albertans. This Policy considers the current global, national, and provincial policy contexts. It preserves our landscapes, people, wildlife, and water, and enables citizens, Indigenous groups and stakeholders to work toward a sustainable and resilient environment, economy and communities. It builds a vision for the future that represents the best of Alberta and Albertans."
