Minister-President Jan Jambon at an enchanting equestrian networking event where we got the opportunity to talk extensively with entrepreneurs and dignitaries with a passion for horses. This is clearly a passion we share and which drives us both to achieve global succes.

We visited the first equestrian club in the UAE: Sharjah Equestrian and Racing Club.

It was established in 1982 under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi. It covers an area of 2.8 km2 and is home to the one of the largest indoor riding facilities in the Middle East. The club has been at the forefront of encouraging equine sports in the UAE and. It is home to Longines World Cups and world famous show jumper Abdullah Humaid Al Muhairi who joined us during our visit.

The Belgian equestrian delegation has landed in Qatar. There we are joined by none other than William Asselborn, the new Belgian ambassador in Qatar.
From him we learned that we are the first Belgian mission and even one of the first European missions in Doha! #pioneers

What an honor that our horse sector is once again leading the way.
PS: We met with the Qatar Equestrian Federation secretary general, former Olympic Rider Mr. Ali Yousef Al Rumaihi. Many Belgians know him all too well as our country was a second home to him during his career.

What an inspiring day! We visited Al Shahania Stud, specializing in show and race horses. Al Shahania Stud was founded by H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani. The estate includes over 200 stables, 19 paddocks spread over 50 acres of grassland, a swimming pool for horses, its own 2000m training track and much more.

At the Embassy of Belgium in Qatar, we concluded the day. Where, the ambassador informed the guests about the strengths of the Belgian horse sector. We would like to thank both Ambassador William Asselborn and Samuël Servaes for their valuable support. They helped make this mission a real home run for the Belgian equine sector.

Back to Sweden!

It’s not the first time Bart is travelling to Sweden. His company has already installed more than 40 arenas in this beautiful country. This month, he returns to the stable of Thomas and Sophie Wilhelmsson. Between June 10 and 13, they will host the Wermland Equestrian Games at their facility Equality Line Arenas. It’s one of the biggest equestrian competitions in Sweden. To make sure the competition runs as smoothly as possible, Bart will be there beforehand to perform maintenance on the various tracks. He will also stay during the competition to make sure the arenas stay perfectly maintained during the competition. The largest arena at Equality Lines is a whopping 65 by 170 meters. For the different arenas at Equality Lines, Bart chose to work with an Equipad footing.

International quality

Just as a chef has to choose the right ingredients and cooking methods to create a perfect dish, it is also important that the needs of the future owner and the environment are taken into account when building an equestrian arena. The best sand and fibers for both the visible top layer and the underlying layers that form the foundation of the track, are chosen based on these different factors,

The Equipad soil was developed by BM Service itself. It is a mix of sand and geofibers. The fibers BM Service uses always come from Belgium. For the sand, Bart works with local companies. Bart: “The fibers complete an arena, but the sand is the fundament. My suppliers sometimes say that I am difficult to work with . But that’s because I know how important good quality sand is.” In the end, every track that Bart installs in Sweden brings together the best of two countries: fiber from Belgium and locally mined sand.

By working with an Equipad base, we can perfectly match the ratio of sand and fiber to the specific requirements of a track. In this case, we were asked to build a track that would be ideal for hosting competitions in the Swedish climate. By mixing the fibers and the sand well – which, by the way, is done before it is installed – we created a reliable, stable footing at Equality Line Arenas, even in a climate like Sweden’s.

Bart Manderveld has a great knowledge in sand, so big that he has become one of the absolute best in the world in constructing riding arenas. The secret to success is a good preparation and a good mix. In this way, he creates riding arenas that suit the world’s best riders.

When Christoffer Andersson, who runs the Nydala Equestrian Center outside of Jönköping, was in the Netherlands to try horses, he was so impressed with the footing of the arena he was riding on that he decided he wanted one like this himself. The arena turned out to come from the Belgian company BM Service. Christoffer chose to work with Bart because he listened carefully to his needs and everything happened in consultation throughout the project, to get the best result.

A good footing should be able to vary between soft and firmer and it should be stable and resilient for the horses, says Christoffer Andersson in response to the question of why a footing is so important.

Bart Manderveld is the son of a national Belgian showjumping rider but has not ridden much himself. He worked on a gravel pit and one day one of his father’s friends asked for help with the construction of his riding arena. It became the first arena of many. Today Bart has built arenas in over 15 different countries, including Morocco, Florida and Russia. In Sweden he has done around 40 arenas so far.

A chef becomes lyrical when he feels he has made the perfect meal. For me, it’s the same with riding arenas. It’s all about mixing the perfect sand with the perfect fibers, explains Bart Manderveld.

A really good footing has several ingredients according to Bart. First of all, the total build-up of all the layers, even the ones that will not be visible in the end, are as important as the top layer. Bart’s company, BM Service, attaches great importance to the total concept of building an equestrian arena.

Like everything else, the arena needs a good foundation and then you have to keep into account what the surroundings look like, where the track will be placed and the local climate explains Bart.

For the toplayer itself, it is important to take into account how and for what purpose it will be used, in order to produce the right mixture.

The fiber is just fine tuning, it’s the sand that’s really important and that’s where I’m very picky.

Many of my suppliers think that I am a little difficult, but I know how crucial the quality of the sand is, says Bart. That is also why I analyse all the sand that I use myself, to make sure it is all the same quality.

The fibers always come from Belgium, while the sand is picked from selected sand quarries in the region where the arena is to be built.

But where exactly in Sweden I pick up the sand for the footings I cannot say, I have a couple of selected places, Bart smiles. The unique thing about BM Service is that the sand is always mixed before it is placed in the arena. This way every part of the arena feels the same.

Exactly the overall equality is something that is appreciated by Henrik Lannér, Swedish national team leader for the juniors in jumping and himself former national team rider.

I hate uneven ground. It is so easy for a careful horse to lose its trust and become tense by slipping on an uneven riding track. It’s so unnecessary, says Henrik Lannér.

Henrik has had his track from BM Service for 11 years. Twice, Bart has been to Skåne Löddeköpinge to level the arena. However, no filling of fibers or sand has ever been necessary.

The arena is as good after all those years as it was on day 1 and I haven’t put a penny in it since I built it, says Henrik Lannér.

For Bart Manderveld, the most important part is that the customer is satisfied with the result on long term.

And what the customer needs varies a lot. Christoffer Andersson has both competitive and training activities on his arena, so it must be possible to make some slight changes in the footing depending on the use.

Henrik trains top showjumping horses, this requires a different type of footing, Bart explains.

In the future, he hopes to work more with Swedish customers.

I really enjoy working in Sweden. You have knowledgeable people, you know what you want and are straight forward, this creates a pleasant working atmosphere.

Our love for horses is what we have in common. By combining Bart’s knowledge of sand and the riders’ ideas about what they want for their horses, we create products that give the horses the trust to perform at the highest level.

Redfield Farm, located in Ocala, USA, is a big stable where dozens of horses are trained every day. This requires a prepared soil, suitable for all the seasons and the climate.

1. Emil, can you please introduce yourself, including RedField Farm?

I am Emil Spadone owner of Redfield Farm. We have four locations, two in Ocala, Florida and two in Califon, New Jersey, spending six months of the year in each state. Redfield is a Hunter/Jumper boarding, training, sales and breeding facility. In Ocala we have all aspects of our business operating between the two facilities, Redfield Farm and Redfield breeding.

2. Can you describe the activities of Redfield Farm?

We are a boarding, training, sales and breeding stable that frequents top level shows with our client horses and sales horses.

3. Bart, is there a difference to make an arena in Florida or in Europe?

First of all I would like to start by saying that I was honored to realize an arena in Florida for a professional stable like Redfield Farm. The  most important for me is to listen to my clients in order to determinate their specific needs. For a client like Mr Spadone, it’s really important that he is able to use the arena at all times. The climate in Florida can be quite extreme, this means that one moment you could have pouring rain and the next moment the sun comes out and the temperature rises again quickly.

4. Emil, how did you heard about BM Service? Where did you meet Bart Manderveld?

BM Service came highly recommended through my friends and business associates in Europe, mainly Stal Hendrix. Plus I’ve been to the facility in Belgium called Sentower showgrounds that BM Service did both indoor and outdoor arenas for. I was introduced to Bart Manderveld by my friend Michel Hendrix.

5. What was the reason you choose a Belgian company, namely BM Service?

After meeting with Bart  I had a very good feeling about him as well as the work he has done in Europe. The quality of the arenas I saw that he has built are what I wanted for my own facility.

6. Bart, how do you do to customize your arenas for each client ?

I feel just like a chef. It is all about the right amount of ingredients and adding the right spices, although the way it is prepared also requires the necessary attention. (reed mixing the correct sand with the fibers). However just like in a top dish, the way it all comes together is very important. The success of a good footing doesn’t solely depend on the top layer, as many people think. The total build-up is what makes a good, top quality arena.

7. Emil, what is the most important characteristic of good soil for you?

Having struggled for years with inferior footing I suffered in different ways. The main negative  is soundness issues that can be caused to your horses. If the ground is uneven or is to hard or to deep or worse yet  has inconsistent depths, injuries happen.  Another big minus for a sale facility is not being able to show your horses due to bad weather. Without proper drainage and the correct sand you may not be able to ride in the ring and safely and properly show your horses to  customers who have traveled to see them.  But still  the most important characteristic of good soil is to keep our horses sound and healthy. With a busy show schedule and many sale horses soundness is key.

8. Bart, how did you respond to the requirements set by Mr Spadone from Red Field Farm?

The surface at Redfield Farm is used intensely as a training arena. This means that the technical specifications of the sand are very important to keep the horses sound and give them the trust to perform at their highest level. The top layer, as riders like to see it, is solid but resilient and has the same feeling throughout the whole arena. To accomplish this, it is necessary to produce a mix of different types of sand, tailored to suite these needs. Compare it with preparing a delicate dish with the right balanced ingredients.

9. Emil, are you satisfied with the quality of the arena and the cooperation with BM Service?

I could not be happier with the arena built by BM Service it was a large investment that I worried about before hand and after the fact I can’t believe I lived  without it.

10. Would you recommend this company?

I would 100% and have recommended  BM Service to anyone who in the equestrian field that wants to be completely satisfied with the riding arena.
