MHC – Mellieha Holiday Centre

One might be forgiven for not realising that there is a sprawling tourist accommodation complex nestled in the lush landscaping at the heart of Ghadira,. The Mellieha Holiday Centre, or the Danish Village as it is more commonly known locally, has added another thirty bungalows to its compliment. The same design philosophy whereby the development is only one storey high and surrounded by trees so as not to be visible from the surrounding areas has been adopted for the extension.

Junior College – Msida

The Junior College Campus which forms part of the University of Malta is progressively updating its teaching departments. A new electrical installation with high efficiency LED lighting and a high-speed data infrastructure amongst the key enhancements. The labs are also being furnished with new LPG systems, air conditioning, ventilation, power distribution and ventilation.

Aula Magna – University of Malta

At the heart of the University of Malta Valletta Campus is the Aula Magna which, for decades, has been used as one of the main meeting and conference spaces in Valletta. The Hall has just undergone a major refurbishment project where all the plant and equipment has been changed while respecting the historic fabric of the building. The air conditioning and ventilation systems have been integrated through the use of the rooftop packaged units equipped with direct free cooling. These systems decrease energy consumption especially when the ambient conditions are such, that climate control can be accomplished simply by modulating the amount of fresh air delivered to the space. A DMX lighting control system has also been installed, making the Aula Magna very versatile with respect to the functions it can cater for, from exhibitions to product launches to conferences and lectures

PWC Academy

PWC are ever expanding their business base in Malta and as part of their vision for the future, they have enlarged their academy and moved to a new building adjacent to their offices in Qormi. The facilities include a number of lecture rooms, chill-out spaces and a large hall at the topmost level. Besides having an air-conditioning system installed throughout the building, particular emphasis was placed on the ventilation of the spaces in view of the relatively high population density in the rooms. Where possible, heat recovery units were introduced in order to improve the energy efficiency of the HVAC plant.

Mizzi Development in Bugibba

Piazzetta

Piazzetta Business Plaza is a new commercial development based in the heart of Sliema. Housing a multi storey underground car park, offices and retail / F&B outlets , the building is constructed on the footprint of one the original Sliema town houses. The historical facade has been kept intact and the small piazza in front the building which lends the development its name has been transformed from a car parking facility to a landscaped zone which can be enjoyed by the general public. The development has adopted some of the latest technologies, such as using impulse ventilation in the car park, LED lighting throughout, lighting control through presence detection and VRF Technology to optimise energy efficiency.

Young Engineers Employer of the Year Award

C & C Engineers have just participated in the Young Engineers Employer of the Year Award organised by CIBSE in association with ASHRAE.

This was an international competition which drew a large number of entries from many countries where CIBSE and ASHRAE are represented.

The objective of the competition was to acknowledged the work done by companies to mentor young engineers. C & C were the runners up in the small company category to Kaizenge who also won the overall title.

John Cuschieri – Best Improved Squash Player 2013 / 2014

Computer Solutions Ltd. Treble Data Centre Capabilities

C & C were entrusted with the design, tendering, adjudication of contracts and supervision of the building Engineering Services required for the increasing of the data centre capabilities as well as improving existing levels of redundancy.

CSL is a Systems Integrator in Malta specializing in the following:

Cloud Computing/Hosted Exchange
Data Centre & Colocation Services
Hardware & Software Maintenance
Business Continuity & Recovery Services (BC&RS)

The new build comprises two separate Data Centres, a Work Area Recovery (WAR) zone, a lecture hall and a meeting room.

The works involved a number of stages, with the first being the upgrading of the power network infrastructure redundancy to 2N. In order to accomplish this, a parallel power network was designed and implemented. This was carried out in close liaison with CSL engineers in order to ensure that there was no disruption to the power of the existing data center and hence interruptions to the services offered to their clients.

Once this was completed the power to the racks as well as the air conditioning units was connected to the two separate power streams for improved redundancy. This set up was implemented for both the existing data centre as well as the two new ones.

The new Data Centres are equipped with

3 close control air conditioning units in each space operating in an N +1 configuration.
A power distribution system in a 2N configuration
Argonite fire suppression system with associated detection measures (both conventional as well as high-efficiency smoke aspiration systems.
Security measures including access control and full CCTV coverage.

The remaining spaces were equipped as a training centre and WAR facility. The climate control is via VRF technology operating on R410A refrigerant and the premises is also furnished with a forced fresh air installation.

Lighting has been carried out using LED’s throughout, with a combination of 600mm x 600mm panels as well as circular down lighters.
