]]>When you witness so many youth take personal tragedy and turn it into fuel to not only make the world a better place, but specifically and positively influence the very situation that turned their family’s life upside down, it is beyond inspiring. Their bravery is a constant reminder to enjoy each day, support those in need, be thankful for exactly what you have and through all means possible bury negativity at all costs.
Today as I read a scholarship application for The Jason Ackerman Foundation, Inc. – The John Hannon Assistance Fund I was again reminded of why we do, what we do. A young girl who’s family has experienced great fear, pain, grief and certainly a continued adjustment to daily life, was prompted to answer one of our application questions, describe yourself in 5 words. Her answer actually seemed effortless and I perceived it as a small window into who she has become: “I believe in the unbelievable.”
This time of year magnifies how thankful I am for the amazing youth we support, those who apply and are coming our way, our board of directors who just ‘get it’ and our incredibly dedicated volunteers and loyal community partners. We are only able to do what we do, because of you!
Personally, I need a few more words than 5 ~ I believe we are here to achieve the unbelievable.
Shannon

]]>We at the Jason Ackerman Foundation are so very fortunate to have a staff photographer. Well, because the very talented Lisa Shorts of ImagoModo Photography donates 100% of her TIME and TALENT to our organization and has since the moment we began. Archiving our treasured moments and those of our ‘foundation family’ for years.
Soon we will be unveiling a DVD filled with those moments, but for now, please click the link below to view photos from our epic Mardi Gras Weekend. If you see one you like, feel free to order. A percentage comes back to the foundation and helps her cover a bit of her time.
Lisa also hosts camera classes for those of you interested in learning how to hone your own artistic skills in this very rewarding medium. IPhone selfies don’t make you a photographer, or so I’m told.
Thank you Lisa and for those of you we are fortunate to capture an image of, thank you for being a part of our world.

]]>The post The JAF True Meaning of Giving appeared first on Because of Jason | Jason Ackerman Foundation.
]]>It’s that time of year at the JAF where our scholars who have earned funding check in with us. They are not just simply awarded a check and sent on their way for a year, they are held to a standard and must maintain that. They each submit their grades and update our Executive Director on their semester of school activities and community interactions.
We thought those of you who support our mission with your time and funding might be interested in a few of their updates. It may help you understand why we are so inspired by these kids and what truly helps us understand the meaning and power of giving.
“This semester has been absolutely wonderful. As you will see from my unofficial transcript I received straight A’s this semester. Also as of yesterday I have officially passed all of my FTCE (Florida Teaching Certification Examinations). So now there is only one semester of classes and one internship standing between me and graduation next December. Its hard to believe that I am now a senior in college. I honestly feel like it was just yesterday that I was a senior in high school applying for this scholarship. Next semester I will be taking 16 credit hours again as well as be spending a whole lot more time in the elementary school. This Semester we were required to go once a week for the whole day leading up to two full weeks in the field, which I learned so much from that I plan to use in my future classroom. This next semester we will be required to go two full days a week leading up to three full weeks in the field. With classes, work, and field experience my schedule will definitely be packed full but I am looking forward to it all.
Thank you all at the Jason Ackerman Foundation for everything you do. The help of this scholarship truly means so much to me!” ~ Annie, STRAIGHT A’s at FSU!”
“I have been doing well both in and outside the classroom. I have been leading a team on some hybrid rockets to launch this upcoming semester, as well as, a two-stage rocket that will be launched in the coming months. I have been working with graduate students to research more into small molecule recognition and started working on a carbon dioxide filter that I am hoping will get a patent upon completion. Also, I have applied to the department of Chemical Engineering to be considered a Chemical Engineering student instead of General Engineering student.” ~ Jamie, Amazing from USF!
“I want to thank the you and the foundation for helping me throughout this semester. I was bummed when I couldn’t go to the scholarship event because I missed an opportunity to meet the amazing people who helped fund my education. It’s a blessing to have stress taken away from worrying about finances. From the seemingly endless hours studying to tragic events like the shooting–you guys have been here! So thank you, I hope everybody enjoys their break :)” ~ Angela, a gracious shining freshman from FSU!
Thank you all for assisting 40 Florida students dreams of an education come true!
We could not accomplish our giving goals without you!!

]]>They have gathered for years, the Probst “kids”. Three girls, two boys all enjoying a simple day of golf on a Sunday that actually lands on a Saturday in October… don’t ask, (wink-wink). Their generosity has benefited many worthy causes in Tampa Bay, all quite personal but this year was a bit different. This year they begin to build a legacy. The Probst Family Memorial Scholarship that will benefit youth who have lost an influential family member, awarded June of 2015.
The criteria for the applicant will be heartfelt. They would have had a person in their life who has help mold them into who they are today. Helped established their values, build their dreams, set the bar for the expectation of who they want to be. This person is the voice in their head they will hear when some tough decision will have to be made or simply the joy from within that will bubble up when the impossible has been accomplished.
You see, this family honors their parents Bob & Penny Probst who taught them to be kind, fun loving, adventurous, warm, generous, compassionate and successful people ~ each and every one in their own way. They will continue their wonderful parents legacy by supporting a deserving youth who seeks, strives and inspires to be all they have been and more. Succeeding not because they have to, because they need to.
