Have you ever felt frustrated on the ice or stuck trying to progress at a certain skill? Whether it is edgework, crossovers, stickhandling at speed, or puck protection, every hockey player runs into challenges. How you interpret those challenges or mistakes can make a significant impact on your development as a player.

“Think of a skill that regularly challenges you on the ice.” Tight turns, backhand passes or backwards crossovers could be that skill for you.

When a hockey player trains in a fixed mindset, the mistakes they make serve as proof they are not and cannot become good at a particular skill. There is minimal trust their effort would change the outcome. This belief can lead to avoiding specific skills that challenge them, playing it safe in practice, or losing proper focus when drills are uncomfortable for them. If a player adopts a fixed mindset, it can limit development and the ability to reach their highest potential.

At Apex Hockey, we want to unlock your true potential. Our coaches believe players enhance their ability most effectively when they are able to adopt a growth mindset, where skills can be developed through work ethic and using feedback effectively. When players train with a growth mindset, they lean into the challenge of uncomfortable drills, learn from mistakes, and use them as information on what they can focus on during the next rep to get better. It is a skill to consistently train and perform in a growth mindset.

The 4 Nations Face-Off is the first best-on-best tournament we’ve seen since the 2016 World Cup of Hockey. In this upcoming tournament, Canada, the United States of America, Finland, and Sweden go head to head in a round robin format. Each international team consists of 13 forwards, 7 defensemen, and 3 goalies, each trying to prove their team is the most dominant. The rosters reflect the very best each country has to offer, considering various strengths and skills in the selection process. One of these skills is certainly skating ability, and we have set out to understand how important skating skills are in getting selected for this competition. 

In a previous blog post, we discussed the influence of strong skating skills in the success of NHL players. Using NHL Edge data from the 2023-2024 season, we found that high speed bursts of 18+, 20+, and 22+ MPH have a strong correlation with getting more shots off and scoring more goals with R2 values up to 0.76 (where 0.5 is considered strong and 1 is a perfect correlation). High speed bursts are a better representation of skating abilities due to a higher chance of multiple occurrences rather than potentially a one time fluke of top speed. If we look back, NHL players that had at least one 22+ MPH burst throughout the season averaged more than double the amount of goals of those that had no 22+ MPH bursts, at 12.06 goals vs 5.24 goals. We were interested to see if the 4 Nations Face-Off rosters, the best players available to represent their respective countries, have superior skating speed and abilities compared to the rest of the NHL this season. 

Using the 2024-2025 season NHL Edge data collected to date, we looked at the high speed bursts of the players on each of the 4 Nations Face-Off rosters. From the graph below, we see that all 4 teams average more 18+ MPH bursts per game than the whole of the NHL, which only averages 4.94 bursts per game. If we consider the fastest and most skilled teams to be the ones with the most high speed bursts per game (18+ MPH), we see the USA in first at 6.86/game, followed closely by Canada (6.68/game), then Sweden (6.29/game), and finally Finland (5.15/game). Based on the strong relationship between skating abilities and goals scored, this order unsurprisingly coincides with the current odds to win the tournament. Looking at the highest speed bursts (22+ MPH), Canada’s team averages over 4 times more bursts per game at 0.206 than the whole of the NHL at 0.048. It is clear that the skaters on each 4 Nations Face-Off rosters are above average skaters in the NHL, and that skating skills may influence the outcome of the tournament.

NHL Edge Data Analytics - Apex Hockey

When separating by position, we continue to see similar trends to the entire rosters. For both forwards and defensemen, we see that each 4 Nations team is stronger in 18+ MPH bursts compared to NHL players playing the same position. Forwards show the same as the full roster with USA leading the way, however we do see a swap between the USA and Canada for speed of defensemen. In our previous post, we found that forwards have a stronger correlation between skating speed and scoring, meaning their skating skills may have more influence on the game than those of the defensemen. Defensemen however do tend to get more and higher danger shot opportunities with better skating skills. 

NHL Edge Data Analytics - Apex Hockey

Of the top 10 skaters with the most 18+ MPH bursts per game this season, 7 were eligible to compete in this tournament. 4 of the 7 are on a 4 Nations Face-Off roster. In the fastest speed category of 22+ MPH bursts per game, the top two athletes are Canada’s Nathan MacKinnon and Connor McDavid, each with 1.13 occurrences per game. This almost doubles the third best, Martin Necas, with just 0.61 22+ MPH bursts per game. MacKinnon and McDavid, uncoincidentally, are both regarded as some of the best players currently in the NHL and both named to the 4 Nations Face-Off tournament. 

Hockey is a multi-faceted sport. In order to be the best you can be, all skills are important to hone. Skating may not be everything when it comes to team selection, but the stats show that not only do better and faster skaters get more scoring chances and goals, but they tend to get selected to represent at the highest levels. Skating skills certainly can’t be overlooked when it comes to a hockey player’s success. The 4 Nations Face-Off players have proved that putting in the work to become a better skater pays off.

Speed on the ice comes not only from conditioning, but also from learning the proper techniques to improve your skating efficiency. These skills often come from a dedicated skating coach. Elite hockey players have even gone as far as hiring figure skating coaches to be able to dial in skating fundamentals and improve their edge work. Connor McDavid, regarded as the best skater in the league, has had his success attributed to the “unorthodox” training plan developed by his skills coach. Skating fast and with confidence can be overlooked in favour of stick handling skills and shot techniques, but it is imperative to help improve your game on both ends of the ice.

To investigate if being a great skater is really that important to your overall performance, we used NHL player tracking statistics from the 2023-2024 season, provided by NHL EDGE. Using linear regression modeling, we can mathematically understand which aspects of the game are impacted by skating ability. R2 is the output of a linear regression and ranges from 0, which indicates no correlation, to 1 which is the strongest possible relationship. Anything above R2 = 0.5 is considered strongly correlated. 

Over 99% of NHL players were able to reach at least 18 miles per hour (mph) skating speeds at some point last season. The more times a player reaches that speed or higher, the faster a skater they are. To represent skating speed in this analysis, we looked at the number of bursts each player recorded over 18 mph. This is a better indicator of speed than top speed, since some players may only achieve close to their top speed one time. It also better represents acceleration ability since top speed may be recorded over a longer distance rather than ramping up quickly to high speed like in a burst. 

Looking at skating speed and shots taken, there is a strong correlation. High danger shots taken from the slot (defined as “The area within 29 feet of the center of the goal and bound on both sides by an imaginary line drawn from the faceoff dot to 2 feet outside the goalpost” by the NHL), have an R2 value of 0.693 when correlated with skating speed. For total shots throughout the season, that value rises to 0.758. When looking at goals, we see a similar story. For high danger goals, there’s an R2 value of 0.656. For total goals, that number climbs to 0.706. What this tells us is that shooting and scoring is absolutely improved with skating ability. The better and faster skaters are getting more shots off, and more dangerous shots. Faster skaters are also scoring more goals, evading defenders to get the best possible opportunities. 

NHL Edge Player Tracking

Unsurprisingly, in the graphs here we see that forwards have more shots and goals than their defensemen counterparts. That comes with the territory of their position and their roles out on the ice. Interestingly though, skating speed may benefit defensemen more in getting shots off. While both positions have strong correlations to total shots, defenseman edge out the forwards with an R2 value of 0.760 (compared to 0.752 for the forwards). Forwards do have the upper hand in goal scoring though, at R2 = 0.687 whereas defenseman have a slightly weaker correlation at R2 = 0.586.

Filtering skating speeds down a bit, we can look at players who have reached bursts of at least 20 mph, and those who have even gotten to 22 mph or more. When looking at goals scored, it is astonishing the difference between the faster and slower groups. Players that have had at least one burst during the season of 20+ mph averaged 9.08 goals over the season vs only 0.70 goals averaged over the season but those who never reached 20 mph. Narrowing in more, the stats show that players that had at least one 22+ mph burst averaged 12.06 goals in the season, vs 5.24 for those that had no 22+ mph bursts. 

It is clear that for all positions, improving your skating ability translates to more shots and more goals, making you a bigger offensive threat on the ice. All signs point to faster skaters having a more positive impact compared to their counterparts that have not reached the same speeds. As we learned from Connor McDavid, skating at a high level is a skill that is easier to achieve through the help of a dedicated coach. So what is stopping you from becoming a better skater, and in turn improving other parts of your game?

You train your body hard, but are you training your brain too? Incorporating cognitive exercises into hockey training is a topic that is relatively new to researchers but is quickly morphing how athletes train. Something as small as arrows on a screen can potentially have a large impact on your performance.

Motor learning is loosely defined, but covers processes aimed to learn and refine new skills. Since its introduction, there have been numerous theories introduced which claim to be the best way to train in sports, many of which have been heavily disputed by researchers.  You might have heard of some of these theories, such as Deliberate Practice Theory – the classic “it takes 10,000 hours of training to master a skill”. Deliberate Practice Theory has since been debunked, as the heavy emphasis on “getting in reps” of a specific movement pattern have been proven ineffective compared to other theories.

Ecological Dynamics is one of the more widely accepted theories, which places an emphasis on the athlete and their relationship to their environment. In Ecological Dynamics, “ecologically valid” drills that closely represent what a player would encounter in game are valued, such as scrimmages. This kind of training allows for the skater’s cognition to be challenged as they’re required to make decisions based on what they perceive from their defender. Ecological training like this, however, may not always be possible for a variety of reasons, like lack of resources. So how can we train more effectively outside of scrimmaging?

Important cognitive traits that separate elite hockey players from their lower-level counterparts include attention and reaction time. Attention is an athlete’s ability to process relevant information to the task and filter out irrelevant and unrelated information, while reaction time is the measure of time to shift their attention to relevant stimuli. While often an “isolated” approach is taken in training (for example, training cognition through computerized tasks and training skills through deliberate practice), combining these approaches into dual-tasking and something called “selective attention paradigms” may improve cognitive and motor outcomes more significantly.

Selective attention paradigms date back to 1994 when Susan G. Zeigler created a method called “attentional shift training” in which soccer players were instructed to complete various movements corresponding to letters, shapes, numbers, and colors printed on cards. Methods like this led up to the computerized methods of today in apps like IQVision where similar cues flash on screen to prompt decision making for athletes. These prompts allow the player to train their attention and decision-making skills through visual cues, requiring them to filter out any irrelevant information and/or quickly shift their attention. For example, skaters can be taught to ignore irrelevant information through the display of simultaneous prompts such as an arrow and a color, where only the color is meaningful information for a change of direction task.

Dual tasking involves completing a motor task, such as a stick handling drill, and adding a cognitive task to distract with irrelevant information. These could be as simple as reciting the alphabet backwards or mental math. While these approaches are commonly used in sport as an additive approach (to enhance/optimize existing cognitive functions), there has been more evidence to show the importance of dual-task training for restorative functions in injury rehabilitation in athletes who have sustained concussions, ACL reconstruction, and more.

While general, nonspecific cognitive stimuli such as arrows, colors, numbers, and more may not be as ecologically valid as human stimuli where players are required to adapt to the movements of their defender or teammates, they are far more accessible. Visual stimuli allow for cognitive and sport-specific training to be coupled while training individually and in small groups, with little equipment and cost associated with the training. Experts have recommended general visual stimuli as a training tool in sport over other methods such as human stimuli or video stimuli due to the purposely designed equipment, accessibility, and logistical efficiency associated with these visual cues compared to the other methods.

To increase the ecological validity of visual cues, simple adjustments can be made like having the cues at eye level, as hockey players don’t often look at the ice to gather information. Another important consideration to maximize the benefits of cognitive training in hockey is skill level of the player. Superior performance has been shown in athletes with the use of adaptive difficulty, meaning the cognitive demand of an activity should increase with skill level in order to properly challenge the skater. While younger, less experienced athletes may benefit from something like arrows flashing on a screen to tell them when to change direction, elite athletes require a more intensive approach with irrelevant information to filter out and a less direct signal than an arrow to change direction.

While there’s still much to be learned about motor learning for athletes, this kind of visual training is a great supplement to traditional practice techniques to improve performance. In the future, more theories may come to light that show better ways to train. Until then, training both your brain and body through dual-tasking and selective attention paradigms is something that should be seriously considered to improve your game.

At a young age, athletes are often taught to “swing their arms” as they skate forward down the ice. That is about as much instruction as most athletes get on what they should be doing with their arms when learning the fundamentals of power skating. Without much guidance or thought, the initial instinct may be to mimic how we run and swing our arms forwards and backwards (in the sagittal plane). The problem with this is: is this the best way to swing your arms? That is what we’re going to discuss in this blog.

Movements that rely on the legs for most of the force production, such as running or vertical jumps, can be improved with contributions from proper arm motion. For example, when an athlete is running in a straight line the majority of the force is generated in the sagittal plane by the legs pushing backwards against the ground followed by the leg swinging forward to repeat the cycle. This means, if the arms are going to help the athlete’s performance and contribute to that forward momentum, they should also be moving in that sagittal plane. Makes sense.

So why doesn’t this directly translate to skating? There are a few differences (i.e. holding a stick, equipment restraints, opponents, ice surface, etc.), but we’ll just be focusing on the skating stride itself. The problem with having only arm motion in the sagittal plane, is that forward movement in skating is generated by push-offs in both the frontal plane (side-to-side) and sagittal plane. In other words, forward motion is not only from generating force directly backwards against the ice. Knowing this, we need to consider how the motion of the arms in the sagittal and/or frontal planes might affect the momentum of the skating stride and therefore overall skating performance.

In an attempt to solve this problem, Hayward-Ellis and colleagues (2017) looked at the effects of the two arm swing techniques on the ground reaction forces generated by elite female hockey players while standing. A few interesting take-aways from this study are that when the athletes swung their arms in the frontal plane, they generated force in the main direction of the push-off in a skating stride. When they swung their arms in the sagittal plane, the generated forces were also in the sagittal plane and therefore not in the main direction of the push-off in a skating stride. Although the direction of the forces generated from the two arm swing techniques were different, the magnitude (or amount of total force) was not different. This is an important finding to highlight as a major criticism of swinging the arms in the frontal plane is that it can be a waste of energy or a reduction of power – which does not appear to be the case. Although this study was not done while the athletes were skating, these findings should certainly be taken into consideration in the arm swing debate for skating performance. One factor that was not discussed in this study, was the center of mass (CoM) of the athlete. Maintaining stability of the CoM is crucial to maintain proper posture and balance while skating – for a more visual example, try and think about how as the stride leg is pushing out and back, the upper body must rotate in response to maintain the CoM stability on the stance/support leg. This equal and opposite reaction is in line with one of the most basic principles in biomechanics – Newton’s second law.

With all that being said, it seems that the contribution of the arms in skating performance can be improved by using an arm swing technique that incorporates motion in the frontal plane – let’s take a look at Josh Anderson, known for his explosive skating speed, from the Montreal Canadiens and see what he thinks!

Let’s face it, scientific research is confusing and the experts rarely agree on concepts – even the idea of ‘smoking is bad for you’ was hotly debated for many years. So when a research finding comes out that an estimate of over 90% of papers agree with, it needs to be shouted from a mountaintop.

What is this finding you say? Well, it’s the finding that compared to internal focus on how the body is moving, externally focusing one’s attention to the world around them leads to generally more effective outcomes and motor skill acquisition (Marchant, 2011; Wulf & Lewthwaite, 2016). Ok, let’s break this down and relate it to hockey and coaching.

Say a coach is trying to lengthen a player’s stride. An internal cue would be along the lines of “extend your hip and knee more” – it is directing the athlete’s attention internally to the movement of their body. An external cue on the other hand would be having the coach place their stick behind the skater at the desired stride distance and giving the cue “stride until your skate hits my stick” – you’re directing the athlete’s attention to something in the external environment around them. Another example is trying to coach a skater to get lower. Instead of saying “flex your hips and knees more”, the external approach would be holding a stick at the desired height and say “during your stride, don’t let your head touch my stick”.

So what exactly makes external cueing more effective? It’s believed to better enable athletes to reach the stage of automaticity, which is the ability of an athlete to produce a movement without having to put conscious thought into doing so. This level of automaticity is a stalwart characteristic of elite athletes in that they can perform a skill even with their eyes closed (yes, that was a Michael Jordan reference).

Let’s borrow a golf example to hammer this automaticity concept home. Say you’re faced with a 5 foot putt to win the match and you keep thinking “don’t yank this putt. Keep your arms straight and smooth stroke”. Well, by consciously thinking of the movement and interrupting the natural, automatic movement pattern you’ve honed with thousands of previous putts, you’re more likely to choke than if you simply let your body do what it has trained to do when focusing on sending the ball home.

Before we wrap up, there’s one additional piece of research to be brought up. Now that we’ve established external cueing is generally more effective, which external cues should an athlete focus on given that there are likely many possibilities in their environment? It turns out that there appears to be a distance effect to external cueing and that the more distal (far away) the focus is, the more effective it becomes (Check out Nick Winkelman’s book The Language of Coaching or his YouTube videos and I promise you won’t be disappointed). This has been researched once again in golf where the players demonstrated greater shot accuracy when focusing on the landing position (distal) compared to the club head (proximal; Bell & Hardy, 2009).

This can likely be translated to shooting in hockey: when taking a shot, a player’s focus should not be on how they fire their wrists (internal) or how the blade lines up with the puck (proximal external), but rather on the target they wish to hit with the puck (distal external). But with shooting, always remember that the opening you see with your eyes may be deceptive because it’s at a different angle than what the puck’s trajectory will be off of the stick.

The one caveat here is that if you’re working with beginners, they may benefit more from a proximal external focus because they haven’t developed the ability to ‘connect the dots’ of how the body moves to how that influences the stick/club to how that influences the trajectory of the puck/ball (Wulf et al., 2000). When working with experts though, distal external is the way to go (Bell & Hardy, 2009).

Now that you’re armed with this new knowledge about cueing, what are some examples of external cueing that you’ve always naturally done?
