Let me introduce you to a young woman, a daughter of incredibly successful immigrants from China who grew up figure skating competitively.
She worked for years, sacrificing so much for her sport. I mean, we’ve all seen The Cutting Edge, right? This isn’t something you do casually. We know this isn’t just an after school activity if you want to make it to the Olympics. And she did.
That was The Goal.
Only, when push came to shove, she and her pairs partner failed to make the Olympics cut.
Can you imagine the heartbreak?
But since her ice skating career didn’t go the way she wanted, she had to step back and figure out what the next dream was.
And why not keep dreaming? Why settle?
None of that took away from her wins or accolades or hard-work, but it did mean that she was not the Olympic Figure Skater she’d dreamed and worked and earned accolades and recognitions to become.
She failed at hitting that goal.
I’m sure there was frustration, disappointment, and hurt because…again, we’ve all seen The Cutting Edge. No one does that much work to just be like “You know what? Naaaaaah.”
But she didn’t just want a job – she’d been working toward a PASSION for so long that a job, any job just wouldn’t do it.
Knowing that, she said the only thing she loved as much as skating was the costumes…so fashion it is! This led her to a job at Vogue and then on to designing some years later for Ralph Lauren.
Imagine just for a moment all she learned about hard work, diligence, practice, getting up when you fall (or fail), getting ranked publicly for goodness sakes! The lessons are as powerful as the loss.
She has called her “failure” a “happy accident” – not negating the loss or the gain of her journey, but recognizing and respecting both.
And so, she then went on to be one of the most famous designers in the world, designing not only figuring skating costumes that changed the entire look of the sport, but red carpet looks and wedding dresses that we’d all know at a glance…and then going on to make “affordable, approachable” clothing with a department store partner.
Have you guessed who this failure is yet?
VERA WANG
Yup. One of the most recognizable designers of her generation had a dream that didn’t involve designing anything at all.
Imagine how different the entire world would look if Vera Wang hadn’t failed.
And so, I’d like to welcome you to my Failure is Awesome… I mean, The Power in Failure series where we’re going to talk about why we shouldn’t dismiss or ignore failure and how stinking awesome failing can be.
And yes, I will be talking about my move out of full-time writing in here still.
I hope you’ll join me!

]]>Below is an update for my Content Editing guidelines.
I’m making some changes because I realized I was priced at about 27% of what the average was for the work I do and making roughly $4.80 an hour before taxes… yeah, math.
I did NOT make the jump to the average content and developmental edits pricing in the industry for a very specific reason: Most of us can’t afford to pay that.
Instead, I split the difference.
I do have the occasional spot open up and will look at working with new clients — especially if we’re networked somehow.
If we’re new to one another, I’ll ask to take a quick peek at it and let you know if we can schedule or if we should hold off because we’re either not a good match or the work isn’t workable enough for an edit yet at which point I’d suggest betas or CPs.
As of this post, I have an opening the end of November and potentially one in December.
THE UPDATED PAGE INFO:
Looking to get deeper cuts and stronger feedback than a beta or CP is giving you and bring your writing to the next level?
We can do that!
Check out below for my credentials, background, style, and rates.
My experience and street cred (outside my writing and writing nominations):
BA with: Lit, Creative Writing, & Education attached.
CEC from Emerson College’s Publishing Studies.
Studied in undergrad under a top editor and worked as his Jr. Editor.
Years of doing edits for fun and money because making stories stronger is a passion.
Three passes of the full manuscript touching on story and character arcs, missed opportunities, hooking and anchoring your scenes and characters, reader issues, continuity, genre fit issues, awkward phrasing, hooks, pacing, voice, clarity and readability, and anything that “stops a reader.”
In addition, some people like a post-change read for changes and opinions. This rate is at $.005/word of the updated doc.
This is NOT a copy edit. I’d expect your work to be clean enough that it’s readable, but not copy-edited. I won’t be looking at copy edits, but if I notice something repeating, I’ll point it out to address before working with a Copy Editor. I may have a CEC from Emerson, but Content is my first love.
Not ready to dive into a full edit but want to get all the practical experience to apply to your writing?
A deep cut, three pass content edit of your first five pages that details with inline notes and a detailed edit letter your hooks (open, premise, close) & anchors, premise, story intro, character intro, voice, etc.
5 pages, NY standard formatting (which, I believe is long enough for most people – once you’re used to feedback, running with it thru the enter MS gets easier).
Turnaround time: 8 days from scheduled start for First Five. 2 weeks for extended reads.

I have turned someone down because her one-line blurb was too close to a story I’m personally working on. I make sure my personal writing and editing do not overlap to protect both of our creative worlds.
Bria has everything you could want in a good critique: experience, a great eye for excellent writing, and just enough compassion not to rip your heart out as she does with your pages. By far one of the best critiques I’ve received!
TESTIMONIAL FROM AMANDA HOWARD:
Y’all- I just got my 5 pages back from Bria and she does an AMAZING job!!! This is definitely a service I need and I am so glad she is thinking about offering this as an official paid service because otherwise I would have to keep bugging her to do it for me off the books. Now that I have had the First Five Pages Content edit I can’t go back. In fact just getting it ready to send it to her made me take a hard look at what I was submitting and how an outside reader would look at it.
I admit- I was a little scared, nobody likes being criticized. But this review was perfect. All the feedback was very constructive; she had me laughing even as she was pointing out areas I need to work on. I agree with 100% of the things she suggested and it’s really making me think harder about my story. The feedback she gave me was spot on. Some stuff I already suspected and others were things I had been blind to before- total AH HA moments!
I also really appreciated that she pointed out the things that were working along with things that didn’t work. AWESOME- I would totally hire her in a heartbeat

I cannot speak highly enough of Bria’s editing services. I was quite nervous to use a new editor, especially considering Bria’s own personal accomplishments. From day one, Bria understood not only my stories but me as well. Her notes are thorough, detailed, and honest, yet constructive and didn’t make me want to weep. I can honestly say my books are tremendously better because of Bria. She’s prompt and sticks to her schedule and truly a dream editor to work with. If I can’t write it perfect the first time, I can trust Bria to make it the best book possible.
SMALL PRINT:
50% of your invoice will be paid in advance as a non-refundable deposit.
As a courtesy, the first time you miss your week (this means being more than 48 hours late) and wish to reschedule, 1/2 of your 50% deposit will be put toward the next scheduled week…and non-refundable.
A second time would mean we should rethink our partnership.

Are you overwhelmed by the tons of data and sheets most series bibles and character sheets have?
This one simplified to make sure you have everything you need, without tipping over into ‘creation work’ that can sometimes create busy work.
INCLUDED:
• A style guide to help you and your editors stay on the same page and consistent
• Character list that keeps all your main characters, primary characters, secondary characters, and walk-ons straight. No one ever has to do weird searches to find out the Uber driver’s name in book four ever again.
• Character sheets with all the must-know info that grows with your character’s movement through the series
• Setting sheets that allow you to easily track locations and descriptions
• Quote pages of your best and favorite lines to make those marketing pieces easier to envision
• Blurb pages to help you find just the right one-liner from your reviewers for that piece of marketing
If you somehow missed it, I have a brand new series out that takes place in the best “tourist” destination you’ve never heard of: Starlight Harbor.
Starlight Harbor is a gorgeous little village on the coast of Maine with a rich history involving Scottish clans, smugglers, pirates, and a more recent one of celebrating Christmas year-round.
Wait, what?
Yup – they celebrate Christmas year-round for military families separated during the holidays — and love them to bits.
Starlight Harbor’s Sweetheart has had enough…
Lyra Grigor is the easy-going, sweet, smile-at-everyone owner of The Sweetest Things. When an annoying travel site puts Starlight Harbor on their Top Ten Tacky Tiny Towns list for the fourth year running, she knows it’s time to give the writer a bit of spicy tart instead of a teaspoon of sugar.
An outsider who just wants out…
Spence Côte has no idea what hit his site. Nearly a thousand replies on some little baker’s comment and everything has blown up. Since the site is up for sale, it couldn’t have happened at a worse time. Now he has to drive up to the middle of nowhere coast of Maine and get this resolved. ASAP.
Two worlds collide…
Between the puppies dressed as pirates, the older women masquerading as tavern wenches, and the sweetest little baker he’s ever seen, Spence knows Starlight Harbor might not just be freakishly adorable….it might be what he’d been looking for.

I’m so excited to give you the new and improved book. If you don’t follow me online, let me give you the quick and dirty. The AuthorLife Planner is no more. Every year we’ll price out creating an actual planner-planner, but we found when asked that over 90% of people who used this yearly didn’t use the planner pages because…book.
The Planner Pages are free for download (the link is at the end of the book) so if you’re one of that 8%, you can still get those pages and fill them out to your heart’s delight
INSTEAD what this version has is a new section: Long-Term Planning. I heard over and over again that people loved the year, but sometimes had difficulty pushing that out further on their own. The LTP pages have a 5-year focus, but are key to helping you picture the work you’ve already done leading you out as far as you want down your career path.
Now, a bit of an odd note because I’ve never rec’d a specific vendor before.
I *highly* recommend the Barnes & Noble color copy as the best version because the paper is heavier/thicker and the color is absolutely lovely….and the price is so much better than AMZ’s markup. It’s like $8 less (before the code below) for a better product. And, as always, we have the digital download. As suggested by several users after last year’s Selz fiasco, we’ve moved to etsy!
So, here you go – and remember: Planning happens year round. Ignore the “new year hype” and find your happy planning groove!

Want to see some pages first? SURE! Here’s the first couple exercises and a summary of what’s in the book: HERE
]]>So many great things.
First off, we’ve made one really REALLY important change: We’ve taken the calendar pages out of the book.
Don’t panic! You’ll still get your pages.
But what does that look like?
First off, I know that every year we talk about trying to make the planner section an actual wire-bound planner but haven’t been able to get the cost anywhere near where I’d want it and think you deserve. The #1 complaint we get every year is that is a “book-book” because that’s the only binding we could get it in for the price.
I’m working on getting the regular pages up with a few small adds I’m excited about to the website next week so you have weekly planning pages to run with.
BUT BRIA! What about the workbook?
I was shocked to find out that some of you do the whole workbook every year. The assumption that you’d do it once and move on was what had us looking for a way to make an affordable planner without it.
I was shocked to find out that some of you do the whole workbook every year. The assumption that you’d do it once, use that as a base for future planning, and move on was what had us looking for a way to make an affordable planner without it.
So, knowing that the workbook remains an important returning point to many of you, was one more reason I wanted to break the two apart and create a new section in the workbook: Long-term, five-year planning.
But mostly, the reason I wanted to break the workbook away from a planner (any planner) was because putting them together in one book meant that I was not (by example) practicing what I preach.
I believe that planning should happen all the time. That the end of the year shouldn’t be the only time for a big reevaluation. One thing I love about Franklin Covey (and now the many design-your-own) planners is that you can get your dated sections to start any month.
Also, the workbook attached to a calendar year inflates the idea that if you are someone who does yearly big-planning, January is the only starting point that is valid.
Because I absolutely don’t believe this, it was one more reason to separate the two.
With that, we decided it was time to really look again at the workbook as it stands. And, as I am every time, I was surprised how inclusive it was. And yet, to make sure that it’s hitting the sweet spot for as many people as possible, it’s with Beta Readers right now.
In addition, I had to write a five-year section. I wrote three of them before the fourth felt like it might have a good grounding for people not sitting with me in the room with me, we created that fifth rough draft and sent it along to the beta readers as well.
BUT BRIA! When is it going to be done? January is coming!
Ok. I hear you. But I’m going to push back to say: I’d rather have you a workbook that does as much for you as possible than have a book in December.
And, it’s coming and I”m excited about that!
Let’s run through some other questions that I get from you guys.
Are you still doing one-on-one coaching?
No. Right now, I’m not. I do love doing it, but the time commitment for what authors can (or are willing) to pay for one-on-one coaching are just not equitable to me for trying to put food in my puppy’s bowl.
OK – I get that. What about the Group Team Workshops?
Well, no…but yes. (You love it when I answer like that, don’t you?)
Because everyone is still focused on doing that training in January, it’s an overly busy month for me.
I’m not currently doing scheduled workshops you can join. BUT, I do do workshops for groups who want them. You need at least 6 people, no more than 12. The team meets 2Xs a week for 4 weeks. You can start your month on any week.
I’m also working out doing retreats with groups who want them. The minimum is still 6, the maximum is up for discussion. The timing is at least 3 full days (not travel days) although, I’d recommend 4.
For either of these options, please contact me directly *points to contact page above*
Now, I want to know what you guys want from me. LET ME KNOW:

Sometimes choosing between sanity and love is the craziest thing of all.
