308 - Now am Found

Tue, 26 Feb 2019 20:50:47 +0000

Season three of True Detective comes to a close with a divisive finale, “Now Am Found”. Many are upset at the show’s apparent lack of interest in it’s own case and storytelling, but others see the acting, character and thematic work as being more than enough to walk away from West Finger feeling satisfied. Which camp do you fall in? That will be all for us, but we hope we see you around real soon as we continue to cover the best in television and movies here at Bald Move!

307 - The Final Country

Tue, 19 Feb 2019 20:30:02 +0000

Jim and A.Ron feel like the picture is coming into focus for this season’s True Detective, and yet in “The Final Country” the show carries itself as if it has a few surprises left up it’s sleeves. Many questions remain; why exactly was Julie taken, and how did she escape? What goes down between the two hunters, Hayes and Hoyt? What will the two old men learn in 2015 that eluded them in the 80s and 90s? We’re counting on next week coming through and capping off a great season with a great finale. See you then!

Fellow True Detective fan Douglas A. sent us in a few interesting links this week. The first is a four year old article that connects all the dots in the season one investigation, and the second attempts to connect all those dots to the current Purcell case from season three. Thanks Doug!

306 - Hunters in the Dark

Tue, 12 Feb 2019 20:00:41 +0000

Jim and A.Ron consider the latest episode of HBO’s True Detective; “Hunters in the Dark”. An episode that is largely carried by it’s powerful performances, we nevertheless get what feel like big puzzle pieces that fit into the Purcell case. On the other hand, this season has been thematically about unfair assumptions and prejudices, so while it’s probably true we have a lot more of the story than we did last week, it’s highly unlikely that we have all of it. With just two more weeks to go, will Old Man Hayes and West be up for the challenge of getting justice for Julie?

305 - If You Have Ghosts

Tue, 05 Feb 2019 20:20:54 +0000

Another excellent episode of HBO’s True Detective! We finally get to meet Old Man West in “If You Have Ghosts”, and the wait was worth it. Both funny and poignant, it appears that 22 years of bad blood and as yet unknown extra-judicial shenanigans have left a rift in their relationship. But Wayne’s memory gaps ironically serve to bridge the two men back together. At five episodes in, we’re still not really sure where the mystery is going, but the chemistry between Wayne, Amelia, and Rolland is so good that the case of the missing Purcell children is almost a distraction from “the good stuff”. That’s a pretty high compliment to pay a Detective show. We discuss all this plus lots of your great feedback. See you next week!

304 - The Hour and the Day

Tue, 29 Jan 2019 20:00:30 +0000

Jim and A.Ron break down all the decade spanning clues of HBO’s True Detective’s latest episode, “The Hour and the Day”. Who done it? The priest? The one eyed man? The cousin? The pumpkin lady? We sift through the evidence and theories and opine about the excellent character work this episode, as we get ready for what promises to be some hellacious action going down at the Woodward residence!

303 - The Big Never

Tue, 22 Jan 2019 20:20:53 +0000

HBO’s True Detective continues to build their triple layer mystery over three decades in “The Big Never”. A lot of new clues come to light; the children being secretive in the woods; handwritten notes and maps; a photo of Will taking communion that looks suspiciously like the way his body was staged in death. Meanwhile detective West recruits Hayes to help with the re-opened case in the 90’s, and in 2015 Hayes has to face gaps and inconsistencies with the official investigation while being confronted by the ghosts of his past. All this plus a rollicking discussion of feedback and the latest theories harvested from the psycho-sphere!

301 & 302 - The Great War and Modern Memory & Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye

Tue, 15 Jan 2019 21:48:00 +0000

We’ve checked out the first two episodes of HBO’s True Detective season three, and there is so much to talk about! Reliable unreliable narrators, parallel time structures, two macho, damaged cops who aren’t afraid to roll up their sleeves and get hands on with crime, and in the center, a missing persons case with strange, unexplained details. It feels a lot like season one, but Mahershala Ali brings a stellar performance to a character that is dealing with post-war trauma and racism in middle America. And don’t get us started on moon phases!

Season 3 Preview

Tue, 08 Jan 2019 17:35:18 +0000

After three long years off the air, True Detective makes a season three comeback on the backs of Mahershala Ali and Stephen Dorff. We talk about the show’s premise and leads, our feelings about the franchise in general, thoughts on the promotional material and interviews we’ve read so far, reasons to hope that season three is a return to form after an arguable stumble in season two, and where things might go wrong. See you back here next Tuesday!

208 – Omega Station

Thu, 13 Aug 2015 18:00:25 +0000

Jim and A.Ron attempt to have a nuanced discussion on the ups and downs of Season Two of True Detective. We talk about what worked, what didn’t, the possibility of a RenaiVance, and wonder about the identity of the series as we anticipate Season Three. If you’ve enjoyed our coverage of Season One and Two, please consider leaving us a positive iTunes review or supporting us with the links below. If you’re super mad that we never learned how to pronounce Edd-i-pus, or we otherwise gave you blueballs of the heart, there’s always the option for the scathing one star review. As for us? No rest. Never stop moving. Hopefully we’ll see you later on for Fargo / The Leftovers / The Walking Dead.
