Emma is going to talk about:

Managing Projects the Drupal Way
You're organised, you love spreadsheets, you're a great cheerleader, you handle a backlog with superhero skills, and now you're faced with managing a Drupal project and everything just feels foreign. It's not you, it's Drupal. The mix of site building, front end development, backend development, and over 20,000 contributed modules makes project management for Drupal exceptionally frustrating for people who've not worked with Drupal before.

This session will cover:

- the basic Drupal development workflow (from a developer's perspective, but without using developer jargon)
writing useful tickets which developers can accomplish
- estimation tips for multi-discipline tickets (design / back end / front end)
- ideal team structures -- and what to do if you can't get them

Bring your questions, and bring your experience -- plenty of time will be left for discussion at the end of the session.

Drupal is a great content management framework for building an online media publishing platform. And usually it just requires another contributed module to add extra functionality.

Very successful shows like Serial Podcast from the makers of This American Life, chose to build their website with Drupal 7. But there isn’t one tried and tested turn-key module for publishing podcasts, that then work well out of the box, with podcast aggregators like Apple iTunes.

This presentation will look at one essential module that can be the keystone for building and configuring a podcasting platform.

Some alternative platforms will be compared and one hybrid combination will be shared.

This presentation is aimed at publishers. No prior knowledge of Drupal is required.

I have worked with Drupal, wearing many hats since 2007. That equates to the entirety of my professional career since finishing college. In my previous job I worked with the CMS full time doing front end development, configuration, coding, system architecture, infrastructure, deployments and support. I started out working with Drupal 5 and over four years learned to love it from a development perspective. Four years later I moved on and founded iterate.

I am no longer a developer, I haven't built anything with Drupal in two years and never will again. My current role though still involves Drupal, a lot. We advocate and propose the vast majority of web solutions on the platform. Drupal has been the CMS we have used at iterate since we began and remains to be. It has helped us establish ourselves and scale while securing high profile customers working on enjoyable and rewarding projects. I do not envisage a time where Drupal will not be a significant part of the toolkit used by our development team.

My own perspective on Drupal is however different now as I work with it in a different role. This talk will cover some of the obstacles faced by both agency and customer and how they can be overcome. It will also discuss some of the ways Drupal is, has been and will likely continue to be which while may be great for developers may hinder wider adoption of the platform.

Last year the FAI embarked on a journey to create a new online experience for Irish football fans. With Drupal the framework of choice, the challenges ranged from how best to meet the needs of all stakeholders in the football family, to how to create a rich multimedia and responsive experience for users. Match statistics were crucial to the project; the key technical and architectural hurdle was how best to integrate with UEFA's complex API's to deliver real time coverage of games in a Live Match Centre.

Peter Sherrard, FAI Communications Director will present the football perspective on the website build while Daniel Walsh, Developer will present the technical challenges the project posed and how they were overcome to deliver a best in class solution.

User Experience Design is a balancing act between user requirements, business needs and technical constraints. Why then, do so many companies only involve their developers in the final stage of their projects? Involving your developers in the UX process from the beginning means they will understand the rationale for the website and the design approach. They are an invaluable source of information and will provide valuable inputs and contributions, which in turn will mean better design decisions.

In this hands-on workshop, you will learn about and practice the iterative approach of sketching with pen and paper (controversial). Sketches are quick visual representations of ideas that may lead to solutions. It's a collaborative technique, which should involve your whole project team. Sketching is not an art and everyone can do it so get onboard with this workshop to improve your Drupal websites.

You've got a new Drupal project. But before you can even start working on the website, you need to set up your development environment. Pull the code, grab the database, configure a local web server, yada yada yada...

At Drupal Open Days Dublin back in 2013, I presented our solution to avoid this unproductive busy work: a VM containing a miniature version of our freistilbox hosting environment. With its rather big VM image, a long provisioning process and low content delivery performance, it was far from perfect.

Two years later, there's Docker. This tool for creating und running Linux containers has been around for a while now and has become a favourite of both developers and venture capitalists alike. Docker makes it easy for you to manage Linux containers, which are compute units that are much more lightweight than full virtual machines. You can spin up a Linux container from a pre-built image within seconds. Preparing such an image is easy, and thanks to a cleverly layered file system, images can even be built on top of each other.

In my talk, I'll highlight the most important features of Docker and demonstrate how you can use it to create an amazingly efficient environment for Drupal development.
